My son visited NYC last week and he asked me what I wanted as a gift. I chose cookies from Levain Bakery!! (Flatiron location) OMG!!!! They are absolutely delicious! He brought me a tin full (and I sent some home with him), but I find myself grazing all day. The minute my bite is gone, I head back to the tin for another pinch. Stopped into this new Levain bakery location merely to try the black and white cookie, that's exclusive to the site. So really, this is more of a review of the cookie than it is the location itself, which is fine. Service was fast. Coffee was the same as you'd get at the other locations -- fine. But damn, the new cookie, which features a black cocoa cookie, with white and chocolate chips, was the first time I felt that the whole "gooey cookie" was more of a "hmm, this seems wildly underbaked." It really didn't have much structural consistency to it -- all softness and doughiness. I mean, I still greedily ate the thing, with chocolate all over my face and fingers like a small child. Their limited edition black and white chip cookie was my favorite out of all the ones I tried, followed by the chocolate peanut butter chip then the lemon white chocolate chip. The cookies are really large and took 3 sittings to finish one! I like that the outside has this crisp crust while the inside is soft. Worth the price imo. read more

When we got back to our hotel, a the other side of NYC, we only had five. They are $5.75 a cookie pretax!! We did not have time to go back. Make sure you open your box and check your order there!! The very first time I ordered from Levain (not this location), I was left slightly underwhelmed, most likely due to social media's over-hyping of every food product out there nowadays. Don't get me wrong, the cookies were still great, but didn't blow my mind. I wasn't running back for more. What I really longed for was for them to make a chocolate cookie with white and regular chocolate chips... my favorite type of cookie ever. But alas, it wasn't a reality... UNTIL! I came across the Flatiron location on Yelp and came to find out that they have this very cookie, exclusive to this location. Let me tell you... THIS cookie did not disappoint... it is pure perfection. Texturally and flavor-wise, perhaps my favorite cookie I have ever had. The universe was on my side. Additionally, whether it's just because this is a newer location or because it's not in as touristy of an area, there has been no line any time I've visited. (Yes, I've visited several times this week, because the cookie is THAT good.) Also loved the chocolate peanut butter cookie. The black and white cookie is crispy on the outside, ridiculously melty and chocolaty on the inside, and importantly, not as sweet as their other cookies. Is it worth $5.75? Maybe not. But I was planning on eating half and saving the rest for later and ended up devouring the whole thing even though it was exceedingly rich and I felt full before I was done.
