I was tempted to leave one star but leaving two because I appreciate when a hotspot offers a vegan option. Also it tastes good but it's a cookie so of course it tastes good. That being said, the vegan cookie leaves much to be desired and I am alarmed that Levain isn't embarrassed enough to fix the recipe. It kind of seems like nobody at the company has actually tried to eat this thing because I genuinely cannot understand how they allow this to be sold at an establishment known for having some of the best cookies in NYC. They probably assumed "those gluten free and vegan people don't have the same expectations as normal people." I wish! I had a positive experience picking up my treats. The girl who helped me pick out the cookies boxed them up all cute and was kind. The line wasn't long at all when I went and it's not the cutest place ever but perfect fine in terms of ambiance. Again, I appreciate a vegan option but not if it's so bad it gives meat-heads another excuse to say "all vegan food sucks." This cookie 10000% perpetuates that myth. I cannot imagine any vegan repeat-purchasing this unless they get it free or it's out of convenience. The problem is that Levain is forcing a 2-for-1 allergen-friendly cookie that's both vegan and gluten-free. If you want to upset vegans, making our option gluten-free is the easiest way to lose us. We love gluten, we literally make meat substitutes out of something called vital wheat gluten. Gluten-free baked goods are known to turn to dust like the Sanderson Sisters at the end of Hocus Pocus. This cookie is no exception. The cookie completely falls apart (poof!) so I advise wearing a bib or eating over a garbage which you can easily dump it in after your first disappointing bite. The flavor isn't bad so they aren't too far off from making this great but cookie texture is KEY so we want a dense cookie texture like everyone else. I think with a normal gluten flour this could be one of the best in the city but not clear what they're using in place of eggs and butter. Due to the lack of binding, they may have just skipped an egg replacement and could benefit from adding flax egg. I also don't know where they got the audacity to add nuts... Nuts do not belong in chocolate chip cookies. Sea salt flakes? Yes, absolutely. Walnuts? Jail. This cookie reminds me of - shortbread, in terms of taste and crumbly texture. Luckily I love shortbread and this also has that buttery taste - a scone hardened via sitting in the dry desert for 3 years - a biscotti that implodes with each bite If you're vegan, there are so many incredible vegan cookies around the city anywhere you go so don't you dare waste your money on this unless you're also gluten free. If you don't mind spending $6 on a very mid cookie, then I suggest dipping it in coffee so it's a bit more moist and will stay together. If you don't eat gluten you might like this bc you're probably used to that cookie-go-poof texture and the flavor is quite good! Ah, what a classic! As much as I love Levain, it's definitely not a place that I frequent (unfortunately). I remember the days when there was just the flagship store and folks had to make the hike farther up. This is my first time at this location but I was not disappointed. Unfortunately I have to avoid one of their cookies due to allergies but I definitely indulge in all the rest! This time I opted to try their hot chocolate (a first), their chocolate chip cookie as well as their double chocolate chip cookie. The cookies are so dense but delicious as well. What's great is that they reheat super well too (I saved some for later since I enjoy savoring a treat)! I recommend wetting a paper towel, covering it and popping it into the microwave for a quick zip. The hot chocolate wasn't sickeningly sweet which I was pleasantly surprised by. It kept me warm and was just the right amount. The cookies were great in all the ways cookies should be: chocolatey, soft and gooey inside, dense and rich and honestly you feel so happy afterwards. Might sound over the top for a cookie but it's a happy time if you like sweets! There was a line as expected though it moved fairly quickly and we made it out with our treats! It seems that Levain is one of the most popular bakeries in New York. With convenient locations throughout the city, we stumbled on this location after dinner. It was on a busy street with a lot of foot traffic, but the line was only barely out the door. All things considered, I'd say that is a short wait for somewhere so popular. We were a little stuffed from dinner, so we only ordered a few of the cookies, despite the bread looking pretty tasty. The cookies were thick and looked unique, but they ultimately didn't meet my expectations. I found the thick cookies to be somewhat dry and it didn't have the gooey inside I thought it would. Now, I would say I'm typically a bigger fan of thin cookies, but I can appreciate good food for what it is. The staff was friendly and line moved quick. The decorations in the bakery were cool and very New York themed. It wasn't a terrible experience overall, but I didn't enjoy the cookies and don't think it's quite worth the hype. When a friend warned me that these cookies were heavy, I had no idea what he meant. Stupidly, I bought two of every flavor, meant to be shared between family, friends, and colleagues after I got home. Those cookies weighed more than my entire carry-on suitcase, and a friend asked in earnest, "Are these cookies or are they muffins?" They have a location in LA but Id rather skip the line. And their signature chocolate chip walnut cookies proved to be well worth hauling across the country. The walnuts are super light and the dough is just sweet enough to satisfy. Every cookie is incredibly dense but also light enough that you can still eat one in its entirety...as a meal. Kudos for the peanut butter chips as well, best with a chocolate cookie base. There's also one with toasted coconut and little bits of caramel which is probably my favorite, and even the oatmeal raisin isn't a throwaway. There are also seats but not that many as most of the space is taken up by a line up queue. Service was great, they were super friendly and quick. So as for the cookies themselves: they are very THICCCC and heavy. They're very different from other cookies I've had in the past so they're quite unique. Taste wise they were what you'd expect from a thick, gooey in the centre cookie. Is it worth lining up for? Yes, for me, if only once. We picked up a couple cookies here after my friend insisted it was a MUST when in NYC. We tried the chocolate chip walnut and the peanut butter chocolate. To be honest, I would rate the cookie about a 3.5 out of 5 - but that's personal preference. Their cookies are insanely sweet, and I wish I had bought some milk to go with them. I'm pretty confident my rating would go up to a 4 if paired with milk! The texture is warm and crumbly in a good way - but personally I prefer chewy. My least favorite one is the chocolate chip walnut one only because milk chocolate isn't my fave. Though, if you're a fan of classic chocolate chip then this one is made for you (didn't really taste much walnut). My favorite one is the dark chocolate PB one. It's like a brownie-Reese's hybrid of some sort; the crispy exterior definitely reminded me of the crispness of a brownie corner piece. So good. The oatmeal raisin one is alright; it's the least sweetest out of the three that I got (the cookie base is borderline bland), so if you don't have much a sweet tooth and just want to experience the different textures of the cookies here then I suggest getting this one. I rarely agree with food trends, but I have to say that these cookies really do live up to the hype. I read about this place online and wanted to bring some cookies home. It was late in the evening but we really wanted cookies so we walked across new york city in search of cookies. When I arrived, I saw that they were selling cookie tins and ordered one to bring back, but I didn't realize it was just an empty tin. Levain Bakery is a local bakery that started on the Upper West Side and now has 9 locations. Being a big cookie fan, I decided to give their famous cookies a try. The first thing that is noticeable about them is they are huge. Photos do not do them justice. Each cookie was 3.25 inches in diameter and about 1.5 inches in thickness. They were probably the biggest cookies I have ever had. The main negative about them is they are pricey though at $4.50 each. However, according to Google each one is close to 600 calories so you really cannot eat more than one at a time. The three cookies I tried were: 1) Chocolate Chip Walnut - This is their original cookie and the most popular one. In my opinion, it was easily the best one. The cookie is firm but still moist enough to melt in your mouth. If you are not a fan of walnut, they have a version without nuts. 2) Oatmeal Raisin - This one was good as well. But with the chocolate chips switched for raisins, it loses a lot of the sweetness and juiciness that made the first cookie so good. 3) Dark Chocolate with Chocolate Chip - The entire cookie is made of chocolate with chocolate chips inside as well.
