As someone with a nut allergy, I always thought I would be allergic to the famous levain cookies with walnuts. I've been waiting to sink my teeth into a Levain pastry, and today... I finally did! The wait wasn't nearly as ridiculous as I've experienced at other popular bakeries. The chocolate chip walnut cookie was...dreamy. It was thick, warm, and chewy (but not overly chewy), and there were melted pieces of chocolate in each bite. :) Also, I like that it wasn't super sweet. Had a cold brew which helped wash it down. At $4.50 apiece, these cookies are a bit pricey. But I think it makes for a good sugary snack if you're, say, doing some shopping in the area. :) read more

There are no other bakeries that can make a cookie of this magnitude. I first discovered Levain years ago in their upper west side location and now they have several different bakeries in the city. If you decide to try them make sure you eat them fresh because they're warm and crispy on the edges but the best part is the gooey core. The cookie is cooked to perfection and they definitely don't short on the ingredients when make it either. We ended up getting a dozen mixed of their chocolate chip walnut, dark chocolate chip, two chip, and their dark chocolate peanut butter. All were delicious but the well known chocolate chip walnut and dark chocolate chip were the favorites in my book. The quality of the ingredients is incredible, you can actually taste the ingredients and it's wholesome without giving you a heavy feeling afterward. It's also a solid unit haha these cookies are heavy! Each cookie is around $5, and there are seasonal flavors in addition to the regular selection. I was excited to stop by one of the storefronts, and the closest one to us at the time was in NoHo. There's a lot of hype around Levain, and I'm not sure if all of it's warranted. I've been 2-3 times and tried four of their flavors. None were bad-- I just didn't bite into them and think "wow! this is amazing" or "this is the BEST cookie I've ever had" which seems to be the popular sentiment. My response was more muted: "sure this is a nice cookie, but I'm not going to jump with excitement next time someone mentions Levain," which IS how I would react (metaphorically) for a bakery that I'm passionate about. Levain is known for thick, gooey, half-baked cookies that weigh a quarter of a pound and will make you gain two. To its credit, the cookies aren't cloying and are stuffed generously with nuts, chocolate chips etc. But because they're so large and half-baked, I think the flavors are underdeveloped. I'm more of a "cookies that are golden brown with crisp edges and chewy centers" type of girl. Size isn't everything-- some things need to be smaller for tastier results. But that's just my opinion. Overall, Levain is worth a try. It hits the spot when you have a sudden uncontrollable sugar craving on the way home from the gym.
