Mmm mmmm mmmmmm. This place is dee-lish. Met up with my friend in the LBC and needed some good Mexican food to ease the pain of a horrible week. We happened to stroll in at happy hour, coincidence...I think not. We were seated at a booth in the bar, great ambiance in there. It's dimly lit with dark woods and beautiful light coming from the back of the bar filtering through all the bottles of alcohol. There are also a couple of flat screens strategically placed so if watching the game is higher on your list of priorites than ambiance, you'll also be pleased. Our waitress was wonderful!! She was very friendly, knowledgable about the menu and quick with any of our requests. I ordered a margarita on the rocks, and was pleasantly surprised that the $5 happy hour special came in a rather generously sized glass and was mighty tasty. We also got the queso fundido off the happy hour menu...O M G, so freakin good. And yes the homemade tortillas are awesome! For dinner, I ordered the chicken taco & cheese enchilada combo plate. Everything about the food was amazing, except that there was too much of it!! I was stuffed and wanted to just keep eating. Oh and lest I forget the tasty chips and salsa, they too were very good. This place has a great atmosphere for getting a drink and watching a game. You could make a meal of their chips and salsa alone. Their homemade tortillas are great. The Tostada Campechana was piled high with seafood, and the Molcajete Mixto was a savory spicy bath of mixed meats and veg. What you should skip at all costs are the oysters. We ordered a dozen, and they came out looking great, with some verde in the middle. Unfortunately, they didn't taste as good as they looked. In fact, they didn't taste like anything. They didn't go bad mind you, they just had zero taste. Maybe they had been frozen too long, or were just a bad batch, but either way, these were no good. We alerted our server about this, so they would know their stock might not be any good. Maybe we woulda felt better about it had our server been a little more amenable, but we were given a look like, "what do you want me to do about it?". Aside from some eye rolling about the oysters, service was pretty friendly up to that point. So stick with the popular stuff and you can't go wrong. read more

I've been here for dinner with the Family, but on this occasion we came to celebrate a friend's bday during happy hour =] Many in our party ordered plates (mole, chiles rellenos, carne asada, were among the favorites). During Happy Hour (M-F, 7-10p): Margaritas are $5 Daiquiris are $4 I had a pina colada ($4) The list included a drink called chichi, so of course we were all curious (it means boob in spanish lol) turned out to be really good (its a pina colada with a little bit of strawberry swirled in it....Another drink that was surprisingly good, was the LA water (looked like a dirty long island..but nonetheless WAY better than the one I had in fullerton (which was dark and nasty). Never, ever, judge a book by its cover. Also, never judge a restaurant by its outward appearances. Boy was I in for a surprise. From the outside, it's a non-descript hole in the wall - literally! It's just an opening and a driveway wide enough to accommodate one car. But once you enter through that opening, a whole new world reveals itself. It was amazing. Parking lot was big and clean. It was packed with cars and I was able to grab the last parking spot in the lot. Lucky day. Once inside, another pleasant surprise was waiting - gorgeous interior! The bar area has multiple TVs for games and the bar itself has a rustic, dark wood, old school feel to it. There are plenty of seats at the bar as well as booths and tables. In the dining area, there's a large chandelier that dimly lit the room with plenty of tables. Wow. The food. The food was wonderful. I ordered from the happy hour menu - which were all under $5.00 per dish if I recall correctly. The portions were large and I ended up taking the leftovers home (and that's not a usual occurrence if you know who I am). The alcohol is strong and the mood is light. The service is impeccable. Our waitress did not need a pen and a notepad (a good sign) and food was promptly delivered. She was attentive and checked up on us frequently to make sure we were alright. Have you ever had Molcajete??? OH MY GOD! This is my FAVORITE dish in the world right now. This Mexican Restaurant is SOOOO good. I don't remember the waitress I've had here both times, but it's been in the bar on the weekend at night and she wins best waitress in the world award hands-down. I wish I knew her name to give her proper credit. I have been here twice and love love love it. They have happy hour specials and they don't pinch on the alcohol. All I can say is, it's amazing! I was very excited to try this place for the first time, because I had heard great things about it in person and on yelp. Although my first impression of the restaurant was not great, everything turned back around and was awesome. We were told that it would be a 20 minute wait, but it ended up being an hour or more. I totally understand why this restaurant had a long wait, but we were pretty frustrated that their estimate was so off. Anyways, once we got to our table, we were immediately served some chips and salsa, which we were all very excited about, because at this point, we were starved! The chips were delicious and the salsa was had just the right amount of spice. We ordered an appetizer that was pretty much a bowl of baked cheese, chorizo, and some vegetables - served with some corn tortillas. The cheese was amazing and I was so excited that I had ordered cheese enchiladas (which were also delicious). Despite our frustration in the beginning, this food was delicious and the table service was excellent. Also, they have a parking lot which is rare for this part of town. Whenever I want to impress friends or family I take them to Los Compadres. This place has never let me down and everyone I've taken here so far always begs me to know when I'm taking them back! Los Compadres is always on the very top of my list of dietary cheating establishments! We LOVE this place. The service is always friendly and top notch. And the food...aw, the food! My favorites so far: 1. Shrimp Culichi, (the shrimp and green sauce everyone mentions), soooooo good! Tasty shrimp in a zesty, cheesy, green sauce 2. Molcajete Mixto - a sampling of most of their meats, and some cheese in a spicy, smokey sauce - big enough for 2 3. The homemade corn tortillas! OMG! 4. Mango margaritas! Yum! 5. The chips and salsa of course. Now while the above are my favorites, I've also sampled the Chili Colorado and Carnitas. Both are also awesome and highly recommended. The first thing my homie says.. they sure don't cheap of the drink. They fill that stuff to the top!! So you gotta try it. As I walked in, the first thing I noticed were the beautiful Mexican costumes that the servers wore (I think they only do this on Sundays, not sure). While it could be argued that this place looks like a American Mexican Chain, the food more than makes up for it. - Huge menu with lots of meat and seafood. - HOMEMADE TORTILLAS! Me and my girlfriend go here at least once a week to have lunch and It always hit the spot for us. The chips and salsa are the best thing in the world about Mexican restaurants. This is by far my favorite salsa yet besides the one that one of my friend's mom make. Anyways, I recommend going here for lunch or dinner and definitely good to bring friends or family. The service is pretty fantastic so far. The pricing of food is affordable and quality makes it worth every penny. I am on a quest for the perfect ceviche, and Los Com has some of the best I've found in the South Bay. I always order fish rather than shrimp, because it absorbs more of the juice. So good on a tostada! I like the vibe of this place, it's pretty friendly and clean, they have a zillion t.v.'s and it's a fun crowd to watch games with. They make a great margarita. Minus one star: being total whiteys, we have to order our food mild, and half the time they ignore the request. I also think that their enchilada sauce is gross. OH! What a bad experience! We called in advance and were told that we could have a reservation for 4. It was a Friday night and we knew it would be busy, so this was good news. We show up, wait and wait. We were told just a few minutes...after 35 minutes we ask what the scoop was. The VERY RUDE young man at the host desk informed us that the woman who gave us the reservation should not have, and that after the long wait, we would have to wait quite a bit longer. And that yes, it's their mistake, but oh well...take a seat, we have a lot more people to seat before you. Why in the world would you not say this when we checked in for the reservation? REALLY? You say this with an attitude? Why did you have to be jerks about it? We were ready to buy lots of food and margaritas! I love Los Compadres! I think they are the best place for mexican seafood (ceviché, cocktails, fried, wrapped in bacon, swimming in butter, what have you) and your typical mexican fare such as carne asada and tacos. The ceviché tostada is a meal and the seafood cocktails are served in a schooner! My favorite dish is the seafood molcajete, it is a dish filled with shrimp, grilled octopus, a fried fish fillet, cactus and fried queso freso all covered in this glorious spicy, chunky tomato based red sauce! The dish is served with a side of beans and rice and tortillas. AMAZING. I LOVE the Los Compadres Margarita! It's made with honey and pear. ONLY reason they do not get 5 stars is it's always crazy busy, FORGET about going during lent and the parking lot is tiny and always full. read more

The food and service here are still amazing. The only thing that's changed is the wait. This place has become so popular, the wait on any given evening (usually after 6pm) is easily 30-40 min. On days when there is a big sporting event, it can be 45 min to an hour. But, if you can handle the wait, it is absolutely worth it!! We came to Los Compadres on a Thursday around 7. We have been wanting to try it because the yelp reviews were so good. To our surprise the place was packed. We had a 30 minute wait, which was so bad considering how full it was, and people kept coming in. Once we were seated, our server, Glenda, was very quick to greet us and take our drink orders. She gets as many stars as possible! We asked for chips, salsa, more salsa, more chips and then guac. Everything we wanted she brought, and very quickly might I add. We had two children with us, so being quick is important. Our food was great. We ordered the carne asada fajitas and the camarones aguachiles, the kids had tacos and a bean and cheese burrito. The fajitas were excellent. They came out very hot, piled high with veges. The carne was a little over done but not bad. The camarones aguachiles were also very delicious. The portion is huge. I read in a previous review that these were very spicy. Everyone has their spice level, mine must be pretty high. It was not spicy at all for me. None the less, very tasty. The kids did not enjoy their meals. They are very picky so no harm there. I would appreciate more "familiar" choices for the kids menu. Otherwise I can only come here without the kids. I went here for the first time last year for a friend's bday and since that day I've been dreaming about it until I finally gave in to my cravings and went back again Sunday night. Now anyone who knows me knows I hate LA traffic and to drive to Long Beach of all places when there's so much good food in my area is pretty much unfathomable. But that just goes to show you how good this place really is. It's one of those places where you want to try everything on the menu, yet, at the same time, you want to order what you had last time because it was so damn good. Granted I haven't had a chance to try much; in fact there's only one thing I've ordered, but god is that dish delicious. What is this one thing? The Molcajete Mixto. The molcajete is a stone tool similiar to a mortar and pestle and inside it is every single kind of meat you can imagine; chicken, carne asada, shrimp, sausage and a brick of cheese. This comes with a side of rice and beans as well as fresh home made tortillas. This dish is huge!! Easily shareable with another person unless you're with me because I will not give you a single ounce of mine!! This dish has this subtle lingering heat that builds up in your mouth and the flavors here and big and bold. Every single piece of meat is so tender and cooked perfectly and I love just dipping my tortilla in that sauce. Every bite makes me want to close my eyes and cry it's so good. The drinks here are ridiculously cheap. Cognac for 7 dollars? Um yes please! There isn't really anything bad I can say about this place except that it's so busy you'll be lucky if you really get to see your waitress when you need her, but when she does arrive she's sweet and full of smiles and you can't really be mad, and really for the price who cares? You know that you have really found a good place to eat when you have eaten there twice in the last three days. I'm not really all that sure what made it so great...the food...service...or atmosphere....after all, there were like four birthday songs when we were eating. I wasn't too sure what to order, so I went for the #7. Yeah I remember the number hahaha. It was 2 Crunchy chicken tacos...and they were gooooood. I am sure that they make their own tortillas, because the chips tasted good too! I know...they are just chips...BUT STILL! The salsa was fresh...not something out of a jar...i hope... The service was quick. The first time we came the restaurant was packed, and we weren't neglected one bit. The second time we came, it was half full, and we got fast service as well. The only bad thing I don't like is the rice. Both days it was very mushy...and none of the rice we had in mexico was mushy... But thats not enough to give them 4 stars. This has to be by far one of the best mexican restaurants I have eaten at in all 18 years, 2 months, 13 days I've been on this Earth! OK..... Here is the deal... I tend to do the taco stand more than an actual sit down restaurant but holy crap.... this place is good. Between my wife, my brother and I we have tried over half the menu and have loved almost every thing we've tried.... Bacon wrapped shrimp? Amazing... Grilled Chicken?... so good... the Steak?... I can't continue to describe the food because I'm going to get hungry. It is a sit down place and you pay a sit down price. Expect $10 - $15 for most dinners but the portions are great. They have a full bar and a good happy hour as well..... If I can explain how good the food is I would do it like this....... About a year ago my wife ordered some crazy margarita that was more like a fruit salad soaked in Alcohol (This is a good thing), at some point we found a piece of glass in her glass..... WTF??? crazy right?? Our entire meal was comp'd for us and they felt really bad.... But here is the thing. GLASS in my wife's drink...... and I still go back and still give them 5 stars. Food was good. Plus I looked around, and I think I was the only non-Latina/Latino there. I knew the food had to be good! I had the chicken enchiladas. Chicken was tender and the tortilla was good. My friend had the carne asada, which was flavored very well. Tortilla chips, which were as soon as we were seated, were also very good, especially when they first came out-all nice and warm. We just got home from our first trip here and all I can say is OMG amazing! I just moved into LB a month ago and was craving some Mexican food so looked up places I'm the area on Yelp. Los Compadres got excellent reviews so we thought we'd give it a try :) Thank you Yelpers!! We had an absolutely amazing meal! Chips n salsa.... Yes! Guacamole... Yes! Then I got the enchilada suiza - delicious! My eating partner got the chicken mole with corn tortillas and let me say...I've tried mole a couple of times and have never liked it. It's usually bitter and sour tasting to me so I figured it's just something I would never like....this mole was SO yummy! I am now officially a fan! The service was fantastic as well! We ordered at 2:05pm and they didn't charge us for the Diet Coke or Horchata that we ordered. Thanks, Los Compadres! The Horchata was very good - sweet and cold with a hint of cinnamon. Here is the deal about Los Compadres...the food is excellent. Fresh, hot chips came out with a very tasty salsa. We ate the entire basket and asked for a second. We ate quite a bit of our second basket too. For the entrees, I had Carnitas with beans and rice. The beans were some of the best I have tasted and I am salivating just thinking about them. Rice was nicely seasoned and fluffy. My Carnitas were a little tough, but the homemade tortillas that came with the meal made up for it. My hubby had the Chicken Mole. Once again - Beans got an A + and the rice rocked. The mole was a little sweet, but good. Our lunch came out very quickly and the entire staff was friendly. A gringo is minority in this establishment (and English the second language on the menu) and that's quite all right with me. This is fast becoming my favorite Mexican restaurant. Homemade tortillas -- yum -- classic mole, fall apart moist carnitas, tasty, filling albondigas soup, some of the best guacamole around and a great atmosphere, particularly on evenings when the roving mariachis are playing. You really can't go wrong with Los Compadres. I will admit, though, that there is still a lot on the menu I haven't tried, the seafood dishes being chief among them, or breakfast. There has never been any disappointment any time of day for this restaurant since everything is on point from the chips and salsa to the entrees down to margaritas that are simply perfection.
