My co-workers and I dined at Lucille's Smokehouse Bar-B-Que at Long Beach Towne Center (LBTC) on a Thursday lunch, and while it wasn't necessarily the best tasting bar-b-que ever, it was a solid choice given the options around the area. First things first, don't get this location confused with the *other* Long Beach location by the Marina or the Cerritos location, which is also by the 605 freeway. This Lucille's in LBTC is in one of the standalone buildings in the center of the ginormous shopping center. If you see either Original Roadhouse Grill or Ulta Beauty, Lucille's is just on the other side of the frontage road. We were a party of 9, so we sat at a table for 10 in one of the dining rooms. Ashley introduced herself as our server, and she was pretty good overall! A lot better than the last server* I encountered here. Very courteous and patient with us, and also punctual at getting us biscuits and apple butter. She started us off with drinks mentioning they had lemonade, unsweetened iced tea, peach iced tea, and watermelon iced tea. Other fountain drinks were available, and a handful of others chose the peach iced tea; I went with the flow, saying to Ashley, "I'm feeling peachy too!" lol. As we were perusing the menus, Ashley came by a few minutes later to deliver our drinks in mason jars, which I thought was a nice touch as it'd eliminate the need for refills; yeah those mason jars are quite large lol. Since it was lunchtime on a weekday when we went, it only made sense to go with a Lunch Build Your Own (BYO) Bar-B-Que Combo, where you can pick 2 or 3 meats. I'm not sure why, but online, they have an option for Baby Back Ribs with BBQ sauce, but the menu inside the restaurant did not indicate such an option, which was a little confusing. In any event, I chose the Tri Tip with Mop Sauce and the two Texas meats: Red Hot Sausage and Beef Brisket Sliced. A Lunch BYO Bar-B-Que Combo also comes with a side. The menu seems to imply that you could choose a premium side, but having already chosen three different meats, I didn't want to overdo it, so I settled for the sauteed seasonal vegetables. Actually, I didn't know what vegetables comprised the sauteed seasonal vegetables, but Ashley had no trouble spelling out the individual ingredients of that recipe. My co-worker sitting directly across from me ordered first, and she requested a Side Caesar Salad, which was an additional $6 on top of her two meat Bar-B-Que Combo. Before confirming the order, Ashley did mention the salad contained tomatoes, which I honestly would not have guessed that, so I do appreciate, on my co-worker's behalf, how Ashley was pretty thoughtful to bring it up before writing down the order. The Caesar Salad arrived first, like 2 minutes after I placed my order last in my group. For a $6 salad, it came in a rather sizable bowl that I'd say is worth the money. As an example, for $1 more at Chili's, you could get a salad that's not even half that size, so if you need your veggie fix, a side salad is the way to go. However, my co-worker mentioned that she didn't see the sauteed vegetables on the menu until I mentioned it, and she felt like she should have gone for the sauteed vegetables instead of the cole slaw. It took about 15-20 minutes for our orders to arrive. I was one of the last ones to get my meal, but it was only about 4 minutes after the first batch of lunches came. I found it interesting that I ordered both of the Texas meats, yet the server who brought my lunch didn't even mention the Lone Star State. When I received my meal, I didn't know about the Mop Sauce, so I asked Ashley about it. It's like a sauce that you can pour on top of the meats to add some flavor, but when I used it as a dipping sauce, it didn't really add much flavor. Good thing they have three bottles of barbecue sauce to use: Memphis, Original, and Hot & Spicy. I wasn't sure how geographically appropriate it would have been to use Memphis barbecue sauce on Texas meats, so I used the other two, which added more flavor than the Mop Sauce did. Each of the three meats, while not the best tasting, still had an overall satisfactory flavor profile that when supplemented by the Mop and Barbecue sauces, had my taste buds dancing at a moderate tempo. The red hot sausage didn't really taste red hot, even after I added some of the hot & spicy barbecue sauce. One of my co-workers commented that he's had better BBQ in Texas; I'm not surprised. We were also given hot towels to wipe our hands and faces with after our delicious meals. You could definitely do better elsewhere, but I still recommend trying Lucille's if you're craving some barbecue! * My last visit was shortly before the pandemic, but our server back then exhibited the demeanor of a drill sergeant that I didn't get to enjoy my meal nearly as much. Luckily, it was only one bad visit out of three, and with how much I enjoyed the other two visits, I'm feeling generous enough to give a 4th star here. read more

I love the atmosphere and look of Lucille's. And they have the best background music, Southern rock! It is always hit or miss on the food, though. As a rewards club member I receive coupons and promos, so I do come back every once in a while! This visit, we arrived just before 5pm on a weeknight, so there were a few tables dining and bar full of patrons, so we got our dinner order in right before business picked up. Our server was upbeat and friendly. He brought the addictive biscuits and whipped apple butter right away, and our mason jars of ice water. By the time our dinners were ready - not long at all- we had devoured the biscuits and received another basket! The plates were appetizing. Not sure if hubby's fried chicken was supposed to arrive with the gravy already poured over but his was served plain and the server hurried off to fetch a little bowl of it for us. The al dente roasted vegetables were really delicious, a nice surprise. I had substituted rice for the garlic mashed potatoes in my steak entree. Hubby enjoyed his chicken; two breasts cooked nicely. He felt "grandpa's pan gravy" had no flavor or necessity though except to moisten everything. My steak was well done (ordered medium) and the chimichurri sauce was extremely salty and not smooth. I would have sent it back but we were on a time crunch and I had a special bogo free entree coupon so it was tolerable. The little warm washcloths for cleaning up is always a nice touch. My friend and I came in on a Wednesday evening. We opted to drive a bit farther to this location as it was nicer than the one local to us. When we got here, while there weren't any guests waiting to be seated, it was packed. Luckily, we were able to be seated right away. It started off well - we liked the covered patio area that we were seated in. The tabletop and style of the patio area reminded us of old diner style restaurants, which my friend is a big fan of. Then everything just kind of went downhill. No one acknowledged us until about 15 minutes in - after a group that came in after us got their menu and everything else. Our drinks didn't come out for another 10-15 minutes and our orders arrived without what we asked for. We were okay with the wait as we weren't in a rush - but constantly having to ask for condiments and part of our order didn't make it very enjoyable. The baby back ribs were good. The garden salad was a garden salad; street corn (I was happy when I saw this on the menu) was lackluster and the garlic mashed potato was okay. Overall, unless a friend really wants to come to this location again - I probably will skip it. The food didn't leave any lasting impressions and service wasn't the best (but they were polite). 3 stars for seating right away, cute decor and good ribs. read more

We placed our order, came back to inform the staff that we'll be waiting in the patio area since they asked how we'd like to be notified of the order. Lucille's is a popular chain BBQ restaurant in Southern California and this was my second time coming here! It's always been staring at me when I'm on E 2nd Street or while im at the In N Out, I see it. We finally gave it another try and it wasn't too welcoming when we got here. The hostess looked like she didn't want to help us out which stood out a bit to me. The menu has some great options and some good deals. I got the pick 2 combo so I got the baby back ribs and tri tip with sides or fries and coleslaw. We got our bread which were biscuit like. Then we ordered some fried dill pickles and that was the star of the show. Perfectly battered and crispy. The ribs were great, no complaints at all, loved the char on it. Tri Tip was super salty and spicy, I think there was too much pepper for my liking. Coleslaw on top of that was really peppery too for no reason. Fries were just okay! I think this spot definitely is good for a large gathering with the family. If you are in the mood for BBQ, Lucille's is also very convenient but I just think it doesn't hit the mark for me to enjoy it fully. read more

I know it's BBQ, but please wipe them down that was not the best first impression. Now let's talk about the good stuff. I LOVE Lucille's lemonade - we got strawberry and peach, and they were insanely flavorful. I always ask to take one to go. The deviled eggs and biscuits came out quickly, and our entrees followed just a few minutes later. The biscuits with apple butter are my guilty pleasure - I would happily eat only that. Food highlights: * Baby back ribs were perfect, tender, and flavorful * Jalapeño cheddar sausage was busting with cheesy goodness * Burnt ends were juicy, fatty (in a good way), and tasty The deviled eggs were good, but the onions were oddly cold. The mac and cheese was a miss - not much flavor. Mashed potatoes, however, were perfect as always. Dessert stole the show. The Snickers ice cream pie is ridiculous - huge, rich, and tastes exactly like a Snickers in pie form. I completely forgot I was lactose intolerant while eating it. Worth the bubble guts. We have to Lucille's because we knew that this restaurant is humongous and they're probably wouldn't be await. I was correct! I love the aesthetic of Lucille's. It is like an old timey southern cafe. From the checkered linoleum tile to the coat hooks to the blues artist paintings, this place is cool! There are several enclosed " patios," which are just more dining rooms. There is a bar with a completely different look, there's always a little seating lounge area, and of course a real outdoor patio with tables printed up in country floral prints. Love the antique looking furniture and the smoker in the dining room. The menu has not only barbecue, but other Southern favorites as well like fried chicken and jambalaya. They bring kind of sugared biscuits to your table to munch on while you wait for your order. They are so good - - just a touch of sugar on the biscuits. I also ordered a cocktail called Fancy, only to be told they ran out of the peach vodka. We had: *Jack and the Giant Peach Cocktail *Watermelon Iced Tea Cocktail *Baby back ribs with watermelon and baked beans *Pulled pork sandwich with potato salad *Sliced brisket sandwich with potato salad *Gumbo over rice I am very, very picky about potato salad and rarely eat potato salad at a restaurant, but this pickleless potatoes salad is delicious! Everybody seem to enjoy their meals but I will say that I was the odd one out that does not like the barbecue sauce at Lucille's. I'm super weird about sauces, so you have to judge for yourself and not take my word, but the molasses and vinegar in the sauce was not my cup of tea. That said, I enjoyed my meal without barbecue sauce. The bread on the sandwich was buttered and grilled and so good! Everything was great. Our server was both friendly and professional, ensuring a pleasant dining experience. My family came here to treat ourselves while we're evacuated from our home due to the Garden Grove chemical incident, and damn did it brighten our day. I don't usually love Lucille's food, it's always been serviceable but no better than just fine. Maybe it's the situation or maybe they improved, but today it was really delicious. Solid baby back ribs, tender brisket, surprisingly good potato salad, I was kicking back with a sweet tea and smiling the whole time. We only found this restaurant to be fair at best. We ordered grilled salmon and it was a bit dry and overcooked. The loaded baked potato was good but a little on the smaller side. The decor was a little drab And with four ceiling fan going at the same time and the door being opened caused our food to get cold quickly. It's great when restaurant's have great discount promotions to bring you in. Lucille's was promoting $15 off $50 over the Labor Day weekend and that brought us to our favorite location. We came in on Monday around 7:30pm and sat in the patio. I ordered the Shrimp Platter which is always good along with their potato salad which is excellent. The biscuits are always good and the strawberry lemonade is the best. Our server was Chloe and she was great, very professional and nice which made for a very nice evening of barbecue. The best!!! The very best food and service from Ashley! I've been wanting ribs for so long and decided to treat myself mid day. My ribs came with a complementary biscuit and amazing sugary butter spread. Maybe it's Southern? I ordered the mashed potatoes and frankly I could've probably added a little bit of salt or more butter-dunno, maybe next time I'll try something else. Got a caesar salad, house salad, and the sides were: coleslaw, beans, collard greens, and potato salad. My house salad with blue cheese was great. BB's caesar salad was drenched in dressing, making it practically inedible. Potato salad, baked beans, and coleslaw were all good. Collard greens were nasty. It looked like every other table had complimentary bread, but ours didn't get any. I asked our server, he says "oh, you want bread?" smh. Now on to what should have been the main star of this show, the meat. Baby back ribs tasted ok at best, worse than chilis. Not tender, not fresh, most likely low quality. Sausage was ok. The brisket was the worst bbq meat I"ve ever had the displeasure of trying. Tasted and looked like it was boiled in a pot and put on our plate. Chewy, nasty flavor, and downrght awful. We told the server and asked him to replace it with more ribs, which to their credit, they did. Overall, a bad experience. The sides and my salad kept this place from being an easy 1 star. Definitely not returning to this place, came away feeling like a complete waste of money and subjected to some terrible flavors. read more

My son won an award from his elementary school so the whole family came in to dine in and celebrate him. Our food was great but most of all our server provided such an amazing service, very attentive and went that extra mile to make my kids happy and everyone else on the table. Really busy Sunday visit, a slight wait but no big deal. Staff did a good job with seating and food n drink replenishment's. Stand out for us were the pulled pork nachos; a little steep at $18 but a variety of flavor with sour cremes, guac, nacho cheese sauce and of course the pulled pork sampling. Those warm biscuits and apple butter are a hit; went through a couple baskets so definitely do that. We went with the 4 person meal for $120 which gives you samples of different proteins: pork, chicken, pulled pork, burnt ends, ribs, few slices of bread and dipping sauce along with a few pickle slices and picked onions to break up the pork'i-ness etc. The sides: cole-slaw and beans...might skip that next round; the slaw was ok: hints of horse radish; not quite sweet. The beans were chili-beans with bbq sauce mixed in; was expecting more bbq baked bean situation. Bring back those cheesy grits from the past and offer that to please the crowd. The sweet tea, was not sweet; so definitely work on getting that cooked up instead of using pre-mix if you want to impress the cajun transplants. read more
