Usually love this place. But today it was awful. Husband and I come in hungry, a young lady at the host stand asked us how many. We said two, and then she walked away. We assumed she meant us to follow, but she went to a table and served them their bill. We walked back to the door and someone else looked around for a minute before taking us to an empty table for us to sit at. About 15 minutes later and no one has come to check on us. No water, no chips and salsa, no drink or food order. They weren't very busy so I wasn't understanding what the hold up was. Waiters walked by us and didn't even acknowledge us. We stopped in because of the sign on the freeway. We were seated outside on the patio next to the man made pool. It's very casual here. Salsa has a little zip to it. The chicken tortilla soup has some zip to it. Street tacos were the smaller corn tortilla tacos. No silverware and napkins were offered without requesting them apart from the soup spoon. The service was very robotic. I asked the server if they did a song or anything for my niece, who's 11th Bday was that day. She said " you need to go on the app". I then downloaded their app. There was a code for a free cheesecrisp. I then asked if anything was done for bdays " again ". She says sorry, no. No acknowledgement, no happy bday to my 11 year old niece, nothing. I felt awful for her. Originally we were headed to Texas Roadhouse, when she decided to pick Macayo's instead. So sad. I did mention this to the manager on my way out, honestly she seems careless too. Ill not be coming back or recommending them anymore. Sorry Macayos. Acknowledge a child on their special day. If you are a native to AZ like me, then you know Macayo's. They have been serving traditional Mexican food here in the Valley since 1946. This past year they celebrated their 75th anniversary. I grew up visiting the Tempe Depot cantina location and the temple-shaped restaurant off Central in Phoenix. Sadly both of these locations and many others are now closed. There are still a few locations left, but the recent pandemic has been murder on many restaurants these days. Some of my favorite items over the years have been the Baja Chimi, their famous cheese crisp and the hand dipped Relleno. You can also make up your own plate with one of their Mex & Match plates. I swung by this Mesa location during their 75th anniversary celebration week and picked up some crispy tacos to go to reminisce my many years of dining here. Even though I don't stop in as much as I used to these days, I have many fond memories of eating at Macayo's going back to high school. I still have my refillable margarita mug in my cabinet and will have to swing by sometime again for a drink. read more

I have been to this Macayo's too many times to count and unlike other restaurants that change over time l can always count on Macayo's to have the best service and food possible. Plus the food is affordable in my opinion and you get plenty of it. My food choices have varied and I have always been impressed with my choices, although my favorites are still Spinach Con Queso for an appetizer and a Baja Chimi with Beef! My family and I have been going to Macayo's since I was a little boy. I am 43 years old and now have a 5 year old son and 3 year old daughter that we take to this Macayo's on their birthday every year they have been born. This particular dinner that I am reviewing was on 11/2/2025 for my son's 5th Birthday, the Server (Shawna) and Manager (Jerzee) were amazing! The food was excellent and the entire staff sang a special happy birthday song for my son, while they brought out a Complimentary Dessert with his name and age written on the plate in Chocolate Sauce! Great time and affordable $$$ for a family of four to go out to a restaurant this day and age. 5 STARS!!!!! read more

Have been to other Macayo Restaurant locations throughout the Valley. First time at the Dobson location. Thursday for dinner and the place was not busy. Big decision, go big or go home. Had the Macayo Chimichanga with carnitas rice and beans. Paper sleeve had a fork in it. Hard to eat one of these without a knife but that arrived and food was very tasty. Service was ok. Happy to see a restaurant with enough help trying to make it work. Chips and salsa choices were very good. Never had any issues with food quality or portion size at any Macayo Restaurant. Macayo started as a family restaurant in 1946 until 2019 when a number of the stores were sold to a chain. Still pretty consistent and a very good meal. read more

Stopped in for a quick dinner with a girlfriend last night. We were seated promptly and service was quick. We shared the red corn taquitos and they are always *chefs kiss*. Pro tip: Order extra Baja sauce. For my main I ordered the chicken fajita bowl. I felt there could have been a little more chicken for the price point ($16.99) but I enjoyed it. I ordered the Green Chili pork Stew in a burrito....which I love Green Chili pork. I was happy with the burrito...not "wow'ed" by it. Very disappointed. Last Sunday we almost went to Olive Garden, but decided to give Macao's a try in Mesa as we used to go to that one as a family. We ordered our food, but were brought our soft drinks about the same time as the food came. Someone else brought our plates out and the waiter, Tyler dropped off the sodas and darted off. Something must've been wrong with the soda machine as mine was mostly carbonated water hardly any syrup. I asked if I could have another soda, but we were almost done by then so we had him bring it to go. I told him I would like it taken off of my bill as the one he just brought me was also mostly carbonated water no syrup like the first one he dropped off. He abruptly said no I will not because you already drank one. I showed him the glass that was 3/4 full and also compared it to the other soda that did have syrup, dark colorin it and told him you never came back. We asked to speak to the manager. Then over 10 minutes later, as he was walking by totally ignoring us. We said we would like to go could you get the manager? He said he took it off our bill. My son got up to go find the manager while I waited at the table to show the manager to compare the two drinks that I did not drink. Then my son said he came running up to him and told him he was gonna call the police if he was gonna take off without paying the bill. I'm still sitting down at the table waiting for the manager. When the manager came, she said he never did go get her and that she had other complaints about the fountain machine not working correctly and he lied as he did not take it off of our bill. She apologized and took the $4.50 drink off of our bill. I am shocked that Macayo's would hire such an unprofessional abusive employee to handle people's food. Makes me wonder what he would've done if this had happened before we were brought our food out. read more

Decided to give this place a try even though the ratings were so so. I would have to agree that the service, food, and cleanliness of the restaurant is so so. The place was not very busy for a Saturday night at 8:30. We were sat after 20 minutes on a not so clean table. Seems they may have been busy but didn't have time to clean properly. Our server had a few tables and may have been overloaded so even getting water took some time. We ordered the guava colada to try something different. Do not recommend that drink, it was horrible. Not blended properly and wayyy to much liquor bottom shelf and that's hard to say for someone who likes an extra shot in her drinks.. Food was obviously under heat lamps for a few and came to the table nice and dry from overheating.. I would recommend this place step it up with quality, service, and drinks for the locals who know this place was better in the past so we can visit more often. read more

Took friends from Oregon to eat. The restaurant was not super busy when we arrived but we waited 15 minutes for our table. The Patrons around were pleasant and joyful; happy vibe. Mexican food is mediocre. I had a been tostada and cheese enchilada which was okay. The side of my choice calabacitas had no flavor or seasoning. The chips were undercooked and chewy in some spots. I don't have high expectations these days since it appears employers are short on staff nearly everywhere we go. The service was not good but it was not our server's fault. This place was so short of waiters and waitresses, the birds ate free because staff was not available to clean the tables. They offer outdoor seating with a nice view, birds ducks, etc which was very nice because the weather was amazing. I feel bad giving this rating but it is an honest rating. First time dining at a Macayo's. I was really hoping to enjoy this place. I was really disappointed that I couldn't order a drink from the bar, while I waited for my table. The bar was rented out to a private party. There was another section that was also rented out to a different private party. All the attendees orders backed everything up... food and drink orders took way too long. I ordered a Michelada and it was awful. The beer was watered down and whatever mix they were using to make Micheladas was watered down. I should have taken a picture of it. It literally looked like a glass of water with a drop of tomato juice. The drink was flavorless. I tried the margarita with pineapple juice it was yummy. Not too sweet. I ordered a fajita bowl with carne asada and no rice. I wish I would have ordered it with black beans or pintos. The refried beans were so thick and heavy they did not complement the steak, onions and peppers. I was surprised on the amount of steak present. I would probably give Macayo's another try. Maybe another location? I would probably call to make sure there were no private parties. read more

Always solid Mexican food. Love this location as their decor is all updated and it's right on the water in Dobson Ranch. Definitely sit outside weather permitting.
