Regulars for decades. Best margaritas anywhere! Great food! We have multiple favorite we rotate between.

If a party of one walks in, during the afternoon, and is told to take a seat. There is definitely something wrong. No greeting. No welcome. Why am I still debating spending my hard earned money here when there are hundreds of other establishments that would welcome me with open arms. I've now had a seat for 10 minutes. Growing up in AZ, Macayos was always a staple. Especially the OG on Central. The one in Mesa on Dobson used to be great, too. With its outside patio on the water and the upstairs lounge area, the food was consistently good. Those days sadly seem to have gone. While the margaritas, chips, and salsa are still good; the service, quality of food, and even cleanliness are hit or miss, mostly miss. We had a surprise birthday party and everything was perfect! Booking the event was easy and everyone was very helpful. The food was fantastic, we weren't rushed, and the waitress took very good care of us. They even let us decorate and bring our own cake. Macayo's is one of our favorite "go to" places and we are never disappointed. read more

Used to work for Macayo's for several years. Always loved it, still do. What I can not figure out is why they would take their Happy Hour off for Cinco de Mayo. To spotlight a chimichanga special? One of the worst marketing moves I have ever seen in my 30 plus years of restaurant work. Service was great, food was good, just perplexed by the marketing angle. I would try to spotlight my happy hour which happens every day, and maybe a chimi special. The 3 stars is a 0 for marketing and 4 and 5 for service and food. Second time here where we are invisible. Tables on both sides of us get orders taken, even though we were seated first. Worst part was having servers walk by and look right at us. Never even got to order drinks. Walked out when the table next to us got their drinks. We have never walked out on a place before. Won't go back. read more

The best thing about this place is the view. I used to frequent Macayo's a lot, and this location has to be the worst. I'm fairly certain if it wasn't for the lakeside property they would no longer be operating. The hostess (Erica or Ariana) was rude, and clearly put out by having to seat us, or give us a menu. The food, was subpar at best. Please bring back the good drinks and food. I would be ecstatic for service that is stand-offishly adequate. To be quite Frank I don't usually do reviews but for this place I will it was very special that I came upon this place just hungry for some lunch with very little time to eat it I ran across McHale's I have to burrito with beef it was excellent the service was impeccable and The view on the water I could imagine would be a nice hang out to just lose an afternoon drinking margaritas on the patio I will definitely be back to try the fajitas. read more

Macayos has been my favorite place to eat as a kid. I've always been a picky eater and their bean burros are amazing. My boyfriend likes their nachos. There aren't as many macayos as there used to be so go show some support to this local restaurant! So glad there is one near me :) read more

We are a family of Native Arizonans who happen to be vegan. Macayos has lots of options for us and is our weekly go-to for Mexican Food. Service really affects that experience and has been harder and harder to find. It takes too much of the energy out of your conversation and enjoyment of your meal when you have a server that isn't present. We really try to find servers that are great and pay attention to whether you might need something so that when we go somewhere the energy is on our time together. Being attentive as a server really makes the experience so much better for us. Today we sat outside and enjoyed the beautiful view of the lake. Tyler made sure our chip baskets were full and that no one was thirsty. The manager was also around making sure things were running smoothly. Ashley was terrific. We got great service! I had delicious fajitas, beans and salsa. I prefer chicken myself. I had so much food I needed to bring it home. Lunch tomorrow!!! I got to eat upstairs. It was nice and clean, cool a/c and it had a comfy atmosphere. My friends and I had a great visit. We left full and happy. I would recommend this restaurant in a heartbeat. The only reason i'm giving it a 3 star is because our waitress was super sweet. The food on the other hand was not that great. I myself got the Caesar salad with shrimp in it. As soon as the waitress brought it over, the smell of the shrimp was HORRID. It was so fishy, and I know when something like shrimp smells fishy it mean one of two things. 1 it was not stored properly, or it was rancid. My boyfriend got the Chicken Burrito, he said he really didn't enjoy it. I'm sure other things are good. I just don't know if I'd come back. read more

Have not been to Macayo's for sometime as there are so many authentic Mexican restaurants in the valley. Went for a retirement celebration recently. So disappointed in both food and service. Food was bland. I order their specialty, chimichanga. I selected the carnitas for my filling. It took over an hour for the food to arrive. They were not busy, maybe 30% of capacity. Food arrived. Chimichanga had absolutely NO crunch and inside I found shredded meat. I thought maybe they gave me shredded beef. But no the waitress said that was the way their carnitas are served. I disagree. Carnitas are not shredded pork! They are cubed and cooked and not shredded pork! Not recommended! read more

This is one of the many locations in the valley and really does a good job of creating a good environmental to enjoy good food. This location has a upstairs which is more like a bar area with a large dinning area downstairs. Plenty of choices on the menu to satisfy your Mexican food cravings! I was really looking to get a chicken poblano and I was told they have a pretty tasty poblano. When I got the plate, the poblano is much larger than what ive had. It's got that nice crispy outside with a red and white sauce packed with chicken. I did feel it was good but not the best poblano I've had. I feel the sauce was a little weak and didn't have enough flavor to it and the white sauce seemed to lack flavor also. The beans were good but nothing special to them. Good chips and the salsa wasn't anything too special either All around it's an ok place for Mexican based on what I ordered. I did enjoy the service and the environment more than anything read more

If I could do zero starts I would. They have been purchased by the same company that owns Panera as of April 1. For a Mexican restaurant, it is missing lots of things ALWAYS found in them, I.e., Menudo, red chili burros - the food was full of salt to hide the fact there was no flavor. 5 stars for Danielle! She's the best bartender ever. Seems like she is always really busy and yet what appears to be managers are just standing around on their phones. Perhaps expediting the food upstairs would be better use of their time. Plus, I am sure Danielle would appreciate the help instead of having to leave the bar unattended every few minutes. It feels like there are 2 people working here, when there's employees everywhere not doing a thing to help. The food was amazing as always. Our first time at this location and loved it! I recommend the flight and make it a berry mix! It overlooks the water tucked in an office area. Multiple layers to host events I'm sure and had 2 patios. Great food and service. We live in west valley. read more

I've been here before but have never been this dissatisfied and disappointed. The service was subpar at best. The wait for the drink order was almost as long as the hour wait to be seated. The food when you hear that that have ran out of so many choices was kinda disparaging. At least they had cheese and beans and chips. When everything came out it was cold like it was sitting on a table and not even under the heat lamps. It would've been nice to have the cheese in the cheese enchiladas be kinda melted. But the tacos did have a crunch to them. I will go back if my family chooses to but will not plan a date night and definitely won't be my first choice. I prefer giving attention to the smaller, local owned businesses, especially during this time! But, I am guilty of ordering from Macayo's not just once, but TWICE in the past week. Because it was THAT good! It had been probably 3 years since I'd dined in at Macayo's. And, I do remember that experience being fantastic. Opted for delivery a few nights ago, and was HIGHLY impressed! They pretty much rock when it comes to their to-go services, compared to many others I've opted for since COVID & dining-out has become so rare. I think my photos say a lot. The quantity is NOT lacking, nor is the packaging. Complimentary chips & salsa you get at the table? That also arrives in the delivery orders! I mean, what MORE does one want, aside from their entree?!? (I mean, a margarita would have hit the spot... but, I'm trying to stay on the realistic side, lol!) First order was chili relleno combo w/ refried beans, rice & a side ground beef taco. Let me start by saying: that taco was one of the BEST I have ever had! The tortilla was a cross between flour & corn. Not at all soggy, hard or compromised- PERFECTION! They also didn't opt to throw an entire package of shredded lettuce on top! The relleno was also perfection. Coated & cooked to the perfect crisp, but melty inside consistency- for a delivery order, it was great! I learned a lot from that initial order. So, when it came to the second one, I had to opt for two favorites. And, I also wasn't disappointed when it came to the cheese enchilada on the second order. Decent amount of enchilada sauce, not "greasy", and paired very well with the cheese crisp. Their cheese crisp is enough for a crowd. Which is also why I ordered it- because this second round was split between myself and a second set of hands who graciously helped me unpack after moving. You treat it like a pizza... and utilize the salsa to top that sucker! Totally hit the spot as an appetizer before we were able to stop & enjoy the rest of the dinner. I opted for another taco & chili relleno we split with the cheese enchilada- everything was good! As far as the rice & beans go- it's your norm for a chain. Rice is colorful, but a bit bland. The refried beans do have a bit more flavor, so they are better than what you'll get out of a can, for sure! ...and then we have the mini chocolate chimis! SO good!!! Sorry, it's a must. You just can't go wrong with four mini chimis, filled with chocolate sauce & complimented by a side of vanilla ice cream. I kind of wish they'd provide more than a small scoop of ice cream, but I'm also not going to be THAT picky when everything, BOTH rounds, was reallllllly good!One thing I will "dock" them on: absolutely NO napkins or utensils are provided with delivery orders. That would really help- especially those of us ordering in the middle of moving & unpacking. Props, Macayo's! I'll definitely order again- and look forward to getting a margarita in person when that's also an option, again! read more

I was so sad for my little daughter to not even get a Happy Birthday from her DISGUSTING server. It was her 11th birthday and of all the places to go eat with her aunt to celebrate her beautiful day they chose Macayos. ( they were originally going to go to Texas Roadhouse ) My sister asked the horrible server if they do anything for birthdays and the server said no and to download the app to which she did and still nothing. Not even a Happy Birthday to a little girl wearing her princess tiara and her birthday sash! What kind of indecent human being doesnt even say Happy Birthday to a child??? I worked in this industry for over 20 years and never in my life would I not acknowledge anyone's birthday let alone a child celebrating. The words Happy Birthday didn't even come out of her mouth! And then to tell the manager on duty that day didn't even bat an eye to it just as clueless as the server herself saying we dont do ANYTHING for birthdays! Maybe to an adult but not a little girl excited to spend her birthday meal that she chose to go to with all the million places to choose from. Shame on the female manager and even more Shame on the horrible server! Both should be fired for treating people this way! A child is excited to celebrate their special day they only get once a year and it was heart breaking to hear she left there with a lot less excitement then when she arrived to celebrate! This has never happened at ANY restaurant I have ever been to. We will NEVER come back to this place. With all the other wonderful restaurants around why come back to this place with this kind of Management and service!! Been here many times over the years. Food and drinks on the decline. Got a flight of margaritas last time, no tequila but lots mix. Today got the house Margarita, same thing. Gross. Also got the spinach con queso dip. Tasted like stucco. Very gross. No flavor. It was like paste. We sat upstairs in the bar. Place was clean and the server was very prompt and polite. Came into town for work and was nearby so decided to stop in for their Veterans Day lunch. Wasn't going to write a review, but the hostess was rude towards me accusing me of not being a service member as I showed her my military ID. My 2 fellow Air Force Vets were severely disappointed. In town on business and was skeptical to try based the 3 stars review. I ordered the chicken and shrimp fajitas along with a side order of Queso with spinach. My business partner had the cup of tortilla soup and grilled tacos both which he found exceeded his expectations! Bottom line the food was really, really good and highly recommend dining here! How do I begin with the amount of disappointment. We have been going to Macayos for 20 years. First issue. We sat at the bar. Two minutes later - another couple sits down. The bartender served them brought them drinks, chips etc. looked over at us and realized. she never even walked over to us until basically 10 minutes later. She took our drink order- I get my drink- About 10 minutes. Finally looks over and asks if we would like to order. And then I let her know she never brought my husbands drink. Finally he gets his drink. My drink was Bad. It was the guava colada. It was obviously missing something did not taste like coconut or guava. I really wanted to try this drink and like it. Even though it was not on happy hour. So we order a cheese crisp to start. It's on happy hour I asked her do you still put green chili's on top. She said yes we can. Meanwhile, The well in the bar collapsed so two heavier set men came in to try to fix it they were obviously employees. They dug around did this that the other... I actually watched a guy wipe his head Then proceed to get ice in a cup for the bartender who is making drinks on the outside of the bar for customers. The bar wasn't busy but there was a decent flow of people. Just full of disappointment across the board. we get our food and then got our bill. My six dollar cheese crisp is now almost $10. I asked her why she said because I added green chilies. I guess she could've informed me because I would not of done that. I'm actually posting a picture with this at Costco I can get a case of Macayo green chilies for less than six bucks!!!!! And we watched the bartender pretty much just sit on her phone behind the bar a few times. Her phone and purse sitting in bar area. As We're leaving the bartender the bar back and the two men were outside Smoking. Not sure why four employees can just stand around and smoke. Last night we had a rehearsal dinner on the patio approximately 35 to 40 people. They had chips and salsa sitting out with no utensils no napkins and no plates. The food was also setting out with sterno's underneath again with no plates or silverware. They had one server handling our party for all the drink orders. Every time She brought drinks out it got confusing for her. I honestly felt sorry for her. She had no help so I get it. It would take up to 30 minutes to get drinks again because she didn't have any help. Then we would have to give her our card and pay for our drinks. We were told that we weren't allowed to start a tab at the bar, which is ridiculous. For that many people. But wait it gets better, help was sent out. There were two gentlemen that came out one I believe was a bus boy. The other was someone who worked in the kitchen because they had a chef outfit on. The gentleman with the chef outfit on had no clue how to make a vodka soda for one of the guests. He came out with a shot of vodka then the guest explained to him that he wanted a cocktail again a vodka soda he picks up the shot glass takes it back to the bar. Then he proceeds to come out again with a shot glass and had put we believe was water on top of the vodka that he originally brought out. This went on four times and never got it right. Then the guest just ordered a beer. Bottom line the food was just okay Service was terrible. No management came to check on us, save your money folks. This place has terrible customer service. If they would've done it right, the servers and bartenders would've made a lot of money in tips. Management needs to step it up. We will never return to this location. read more
