There are some ethnic cuisines that are just better from a hole in the wall than from an upscale restaurant. Thai just happens to be one of them and I'm quite certain I may not be the only one to agree so. My darling friend loves this place so I asked him to take me here one evening. It is so hidden at the corner near a dance studio that I personally would have never found it. Once we stepped in, it was, surprisingly, packed! It has very little sitting; possibly could occupy a count of 15 people at the most? It kind of reminds me of a fast food dine in at the food court in a mall to be honest with you. We ordered the Pad Thai (my favourite) & one of their specials, the orange chicken (an excellent choice). Judging by the timing of our dishes, they clearly make everything from scratch. I really enjoyed the Pad Thai although I will conclude that they could go lighter on the oil; it was rather too oily for me (& I do love extra virgin olive oil). The orange chicken however was surprisingly very delicious! It was perfectly crispy & they used good orange peels with specks of Thai chili, yum! I came back to see if the portions had, indeed, gotten bigger, as reported. They had, but the food has also gotten worse. And it took 45 minutes to come out. This wasn't quite the direction I was hoping for. The pork pad thai was like a gluey mass of sweetness. Not just tamarind paste - although that was in there too - but just pure sweet. Like eating a dessert plate with tough squares of pork. It was also pretty spicy, but even that couldn't save it. That plus the Thai iced tea I ordered probably would have had me consuming 9000% of my daily recommended sugar intake or something (if I had been able to finish either thing, which I didn't). Julian's lad nah with tofu was a bit better, with the noodles retaining the strong charcoal tang of the wok. But the gravy itself was wobbly and gelatinous, bringing up questions about whether this was soup or jello. This is not a question I enjoy contemplating while staring into the depths of a bowl of noodles, so I give up. read more

Tucked into the corner of a strip mall containing a beauty supply store and a watch repair joint on 17th Street in Costa Mesa, MaDee serves up a solid Thai spectrum, with a Northern Thai influence. The Kao Soi is an offering you are not likely to find elsewhere, and it's a eclectic mix of curry and soup with egg noodle. Definitely unique and worth trying. Of course you'll find the standard favorites here, but tend to stray away from them. What I did really enjoy was the Pinapple Fried Rice with raisns and cashews with delivers a strong balance of sweet and savory that I really enjoyed as a stand alone dish. The coconut shrimp soup was also solid, with the richness of the coconut milk blending with a hit of citrusy lemongrass like flavor to give it that quintessential Thai balance. Now I'm a huge fan of Panang Curry- it's generally the curry I judge a restaurant on, and this one just didn't deliver for me. We ordered it mild because I was with family members who have zero spice register, but even without it, I got a one note offering that was lacking in complexity. Sad day here. The only way to judge MaDee is solely on the food- the interior is spartan and you order at the counter. The service is slow, but that is because they are cooking almost everything to order, and I don't mind that at all. AND if you ask for it spicy, they'll actually kick it up for you, which is rare for me (my whiteness usually serves against me). It's kind of weird to have Thai food in a fast casual setting, but this is how MaDee felt. Despite the brief experience I have to say that it was pretty good! I came here with a friend visiting from LA, and with La Cave on the docket for later that evening it was the perfect excuse to try out this place that I'd heard about from other friends. I got the chicken satay and yellow curry. The satay was great - chicken was seasoned and cooked really well, which can be a bit iffy with this appetizer, but the curry was just okay and a little short on chicken. Our service was good, and the value for the money was very good (small portions, but priced accordingly). Overall I'd definitely come back for a quick bite, or to get take-out, but I might not go out of my way for it. read more

I've been here maybe seven times in the past couple of weeks (late nights at work) and the food has been pretty amazing every time. In the past I've always gone to Thai Nakorn because it's pretty much the highest-rated Thai food in the area, and every time I leave thinking that was good, but something was lacking. MaDee, on the other hand, is just damn good and it tastes really authentic. Their portions are a tad on the small side, but by small it's in comparison to places that I feel give you enough food for two meals anyway. Also, be warned that they can take a while - I've had two instances now where I had to wait almost 45 minutes for food to come out, and I've also had instances where the food was ready in 10 minutes. They don't seem to cope too well with a lot of orders, so calling ahead is a good idea. Regardless of the long wait at times, MaDee is definitely my go-to Thai place now. I'm so happy to finally have one in the area, and this includes Irvine/Garden Grove/Westminster etc. Dishes I have had and liked and would recommend: Green Curry Yellow Curry Duck Curry Ground Chicken and Basil Leaves Kao Soi (Think of this as a curry soup with noodles) Chicken Satay Tom Yum Noodle Soup Padcha - mixed seafood, which comes with mussels, shrimp, squid, crab (yes, it has real crab still in the shell.) Dishes I've tried and probably wouldn't get again: Garlic Pepper - Tasty, but kind of one-note and towards the end it was just like eating too much garlic pepper. Chow Mein Kee Mow - A bit boring as well. Dishes I've tasted, meaning I stole bites from friends, and they were freaking delicious and I would definitely get: Crab Fried Rice - This has real crab in it, none of that imitation stuff. Be warned that on a couple of occasions there have been shells in it, but for its deliciousness that can be excused. Spicy Squid Butter Shrimp - I don't really know why this is called butter shrimp, as it gives the impression that it's just shrimp drenched in butter. It's more like shrimp in a somewhat tangy/spicy/sweet sauce and it's really good. Kind of similar to the Special Shrimp I would get at Sompun in Silver Lake. Scallop & Shrimp - Scallop is cooked perfectly, not too stringy and tough. Pork Jerky - Don't let the name fool you. The pork is very well cooked and not really a "jerky" at all. My tongue and lips swelled up too It's been 18 hours and my stomach still hurts! WAH!!!! Please don't kill me next time by putting SO MUCH CHILLI in my food. MaDee Thai kitchen changed my life -- for the better. Before going to college, I was not one who endured spicy food. I struggled with Tapatio and was not ready to eat any form of Jalapeño, and it scared me to even go near something spicy. My first year in college I took a single bite of Tom Yum soup (from MaDee's) and I was in pain. It was not just hot (temperature), but the spices were making me regret my decision to "try" it....but then it hit me. I could taste it. Behind the heat of the soup itself was a flavor I had never tasted before. I could taste a mix of Thai spices weaved in with (what I believe to be) lemon/lime, and chicken that had absorbed the juices of the soup it was in. All of this in a single bite rocked my world. I have had Thai food from other places, but MaDee has earned a place in my heart for many reasons. The portions they give and the yumminess of their Pad Thai, Pad See Eew, Tom Yum Soup (), and Crying Tiger (and many more examples) is reason enough to go. Yes, their prices are higher than some restaurants, but they don't let you down with what you get. Also, please don't let the price deter you from trying this place out. This place is very new since i remember driving past it when it was empty last year but nice to see another Thai place in the area. Very small place almost hidden away in a strip mall on 17th, you can almost miss it but its in the same lot as the beauty supply store that can't be missed. Theres a dance school next door so parking can be a challenge if you come during the kids dance class times. Anyways I ordered my food over the phone, knew exactly what i wanted and was told it would be ready in 20 mins. When i get there i noticed its a small place but nice and cozy inside. The kitchen is right in front so nothing hidden out back, chef is woking it right in front of the patrons. So my order was ready shortly after i got there, i then proceeded to pay and leave. Heres what i ordered: 1. the chicken pad thai ($8), it was pretty decent but i was a little annoyed that they did not ask how spicy I wanted it and I initially bought it for my 5 yr old and he immediately said it was too spicy for his tastes. 2. the beef pad see ew ($8) which was very good, there was not much broccoli in there and the noodles are not as wide and thick as I've had it before but the sauce was very tasty and my son loved this dish and would not share (initially ordered for me so my loss). 3. the shrimp thai fried rice ($9), very delicious, good size and amount of shrimp that was quickly confiscated by my 5 yr old but the rice was good even without any shrimps left. 4. the thai iced coffee ($2.50) which was refreshing and delicious, medium cup, wish it was larger sized though. The food was packed in those rectangular plastic containers but not jam packed in there, could have been filled a little more since the place is kind of pricey for thai food and for the price I paid for each entree. The bill was initially $38 but I gave the lady my 'ru crazy?' look and she recalculated it and it came out to $29 with tax. The lady didnt write any of the prices down for each individual dish on the receipt so make sure to do your own math so you don't get ripped. I paid with mc, they also take visa, but do not take discover or amex and its a $12 minimum for credit card. Surprisingly, I didnt see any lunch specials which would have been nice and even though there's inside seating I noticed everyone orders at the counter and then sits down so it's not a wait on you kind of place. Overall, the food was satisfying and hit the spot for my thai craving and I enjoyed my thai lunch and iced coffee quite a bit so i will most likely come back here again, check it out for yourself. read more

WOW! Ma Dee really is as good as it gets for Thai food in Costa Mesa! Let me set the stage. A few years ago, I took a nice long vacation in Thailand. Spent time in Bangkok, Ayutthaya, Krabi area, and several islands. I can't wait to return, Thailand is amazing. I loved everything about Thailand except the drunken tourists in the resort areas, so we avoided them. I especially loved the food. The amazing variety, layering of flavors, and respect for fresh ingredients blew me away. My brother and I spent a lot of time off the beaten tourist path, and one of the criteria for places to eat was to find spots with no other tourists. When I returned, I immediately bought several Thai cookbooks and headed up the Thai Town to stock up on ingredients. I started trying every Thai restaurant in the area. Some are decent, some terrible. None really authentic except for one in Thai Town. The reality is, Thai food is bursting with flavors, some quite bold, and most places tone down their food to cater to bland American palates. What I really wanted to find was the soup I so loved - a chicken noodle soup with a delicate balance of sweet, spicy and sour. I got close, but have never been able to find it until tonight. Thai style tom yum. Rice noodles, ground chicken, peanuts, peppers... so good!! We also had a terrific papaya salad - spicier and full of flavors and textures. The crying tiger was great as well. Very tender beef, seared on the outside, red in the middle, with an excellent sauce. The place is small, with no real decor, but it doesn't need it. The employees genuinely care, and after hearing me describe the soup, they made me it from scratch. the food is incredibly fresh, authentic, and simply fantastic. After we left, the Mrs. proclaimed, "looks like we found a new happy place." We sure did, you could too. Go to Ma Dee, take some friends, order a lot and pass it around. I order by phone a few weeks ago because our regular Thai place is closed on Sundays. Thought we could try it out. The lady said it would take 45 min -1 hour. I figured ok, they're busy, I'll just go in an hour. So I got there 1 hr and 5 minutes later and my order isn't ready. No problem, I'll pay my bill and wait in my car (Covid-19 style). My total was $56 which seemed a bit high but ok. My order is ready in another 30 minutes and I leave. I get home and realize the orange chicken isn't in the bag. I drive 2 miles back and pick up the chicken which she handed me without a bag and turned around to go back to helping her 3 waiting customers who also look as exhausted as I felt with my only trip to Madee. Drive 2 miles back home. The food was decent, luke warm for me since I had to drive back and forth before I could eat it. I won't be going back but I do hope they find a Manager to assist the store. I have read some fairly favorable reviews from fellow Yelpers about this place. So, on the way home, I stopped by MaDee and ordered some take out to take home with me. I ordered the Pad Thai with chicken, the crab fried rice and the sticky rice with mango. When I ordered, the lady at the front cashier counter forewarned me that I would have about a 15 minute wait. I was fine with that. But, frustratingly enough, I ended up waiting about 35 minutes. And, no apology for the wait when the food arrived. The interior is extremely casual, no decoration and not really a place where I would want to sit down and eat. There seemed to be a steady flow of customers going in and out to pick out take out. Regarding the food, I really enjoyed the pad thai. I know, I have been told countless times, don't order pad thai if you want to really try authentic thai food. But, I admit it, I love pad thai. MaDee's pad thai was very flavorful with the right mix of chicken, bean sprouts, peanuts, egg, etc. I was a little dubious about the crab fried rice because I didn't see any crab. The rice had a slight crab taste to it. It was just okay at best. The sticky mango rice on a scale from 1 to 10 was a 7. They provided a fairly decent serving of fresh mango. AWESOME Pad See Ewe! Now I don't say this loosely being pad see ewe is my go to Thai dish, and Thai food ranks high on my favorite foods, but their pad see ewe is debatably one of the best I've ever had. Smokey grill taste with flavorful caramelized sauce and fresh chicken and soft noodles. I'm a huge fan. It's a fast casual restaurant (order at the counter) located in a corner of a tiny strip mall with a ghetto sign. Though dated interior, it's clean with small attempts of modern decor and jamming really interesting, Kings of Convenience type music, which leads me to believe this place has huge potential and someone in the business sees the local trend. I've been to a lot of Thai restaurants so I know you don't go for the ambiance. But this place takes it to a new level - a very low new level. Not a picture on the wall - stark white. You order at a counter and not surprisingly most were getting it to go. The food is served on styrofoam plates (which is like nails on the chalkboard to me) and the napkins are pitiful. I'm certain they have better quality in prison. Now this would all be at least bearable if the food was amazing but it's just not. Very average. The pad Thai was fine and my green curry was ok. Finally a good local Thai restaurant on 17th! We had Tom Yum soup with Shrimp (super spicy and DELICIOUS), Tom Kha (coconut soup) with chicken (delish), and Mixed Seafood Pad Cha (mussels, crab, squid, shrimp, and veggies in a super spicy, sweet garlic sauce). Every bite we ate was so good; spicy, flavorful, and not greasy like the other thai restaurant on 17th. Everything was really hot and freshly made to order. The owners are a really sweet couple that chatted with us and checked on us to make sure everything was delicious just enough times without being annoying. Tony, the husband, said if we had a request for something not on the menu, they would make it for us! And they gave us complimentary coconut ice cream at the end of the meal, especially nice since we weren't finished until about 15 minutes after they close! Although I would love to chat with Tony again, and the background music playing was pretty good (the xx and a cool indie beatles cover band) I think this will end up being a primarily take-out place since the decor is not very inviting. My roommate has been talking about this little hole in the wall Thai restaurant, so when first date #865 mentioned he was in the mood for some Thai food (and seemed like a low-key guy, down-to earth guy for a refreshing change, no suggestions of Bandera from me for sure), I suggested we check it out. I ordered the noodles, he ordered the tofu curry. I asked for extra veggies and tofu in mine. "Sure no problem". Zero extra veggies. And no tofu. Seriously? Obviously I acted like this was totally fine as to not appear high maintenance on my date. I already felt a little like Sally-esq with my questions about the menu. I also ordered it spicy. Not too spicy. So if you like food with a kick then say "REALLY spicy". Although I can't guarantee this will work, given the blatant disregard for my order (think protein in food isn't too much of a outrageous request...in fact it is listed as an option on the menu). Anyway, the food was decent. Not amazing, but pretty good for Costa Mesa, a virtual wasteland for authentic ethnic food of any kind. Food's good here. The woman who seems to be the one who is running the place every time I go in there is always friendly (no i'm not being racist, it literally is the same woman every time!) Prices are good, the parking is a little claustrophobic for the area but they can't help that. It's in a good area with a lot of traffic so i'm sure they do well. So plan ahead it takes awhile to get your food. Kao Soi is so tasty... Definitely try it. The Pad See Ew with Chicken or Pork is a favorite. We've had the noodles be a little over cooked at times. The Red Duck Curry is a winner. The Red Curry with anything is great. The Green Curry is another favorite. House Rolls we get almost every time. The Crying Tiger is yummy too. I've been dining at (ok, taking out) from MaDee Thai Kitchen since it opened. The owner is a wonderful lady who is always present and working hard. My family loves Thai food and enjoys searching out Thai gems in whatever city we're in. Luckily MaDee is near my home so I don't have to travel far for great Thai food. In my experience, a lot of Thai places (especially big Thai restaurants) tend to serve a bland or dumbed down Thai cuisine but MaDee is darn pretty authentic on flavor. They have some unique dishes on the menu and I can't get away from their duck curry!!!! If you want solid Thai food from a clean mom and pop type establishment, this is for you. There are a few other restaurants in the area that serve Thai food but if you just want great authentic delicious Thai, you know where to go.......and the owner is so nice! read more

Working in the area this week and was craving Thai Food, so I decided to stop by here. It's a walk up order setting. So basically, you order and pay before you sit down. Like a Panda or Pick Up Stix kinda set up. Seating is also a little limited, so we were lucky to find a spot, especially during lunch time. The food was decent, but I definitely had a lot better Thai Food, but also had worst. The Service was also ok, but not bad either. I looked at some of the dishes other customers ordered and it doesn't look too appealing either. Kinda took awhile for your food. I notice three gentlemen walked in way after us and got their order way before us. I am assuming they ordered in advance, I hope so anyway. Let's put it this way, I finished this review and still had to wait another 15 minutes before I got my food. The place was clean, but certainly not immaculate. All in all, it's a three stars, probably would have a hard time if located in another area with higher quality food demographics. The price however, is super reasonable. They do have a small dining area where you order at the counter than about 30 minutes later they will bring your food out. Yes thirty minutes! Place wasn't very packed but I believe most of their business is from take outs. When we were about to order the lady informed the gentlemen it would take about 30 minutes for his order to be ready. So we were already warned but still decided to wait for our food since we drove over 30 minutes to get here. We ordered the following Deep fried soft shell crab - I didn't get to try any because my friends devoured it in less than 2 minutes. I'm sure it wasn't anything special. How can you go wrong with deep fried anything? $12 bucks! A little steep in my opinion Pad thai w/ shrimp- This was my dish. We thoroughly enjoyed coconut shrimp soup and spicy noodles -- they're not kidding when they say "spicy"! I've only been there twice, but already it seems like it's consistently good. This review is for the food only. MaDee does not have much of a dining atmosphere...it feels like a fast food joint. Ambiance= 2 stars... BUT like I said this a food review only. I've eaten at MaDee's 5 times now, it quickly became my favorite local Thai restaurant after my second visit. My husband and I love Thai food but have had a hard time finding really authentic Thai in the Newport Area. If you love Thai food you already know that the best places are always the small Mom and Pops that have zero ambiance; usually hidden in the corner of an old strip mall, non concerned with making Americanized Thai dishes. Guess what?! MaDee is very small and hidden in the corner unit of a strip mall. Back to the food- -Duck Curry- My husbands new favorite dish. Spicy, savory, delicious. -Tom Yum soup- My favorite soup, a little spicy and salty with the right kick of roots and herbs. -Pad Thai- They do a great job with their Pad Thai. Unfortunately a lot of Thai places Americanize their Pad Thai and turn it into spaghetti with peanut butter. MaDee Pad Thai is authentic and correct. -Pad See Ew- This can be interpreted many ways but MaDee does it right. Just the right amount of salty and sweet. As the others reviews attest, MaDees's is a must go for great Thai food.....I just stick to take out! So far so good. It's nice to see a real Thai place pop up in the eastside CM area (Thai Spice is crap and does not count). The neighborhood was really hurting for a cheap, takeout type Asian joint. Only tried the pad thai so far, but it was pretty solid. And it came with a free drink, which was a nice bonus. The menu has lots of choices, so I'll be sure to try some other things soon. Oh, and the couple that owns/operates the joint are super nice. The one critique I will give is that I wish they would charge more for my food and just give bigger portions. Not that the portions are small by any means, but I like it when there's enough for leftovers. The main reason though, is that the prices are relatively low for the area, almost too low (almost every entree is basically 7 or 8 bucks). I know, weird thing to criticize, but it really makes me wonder if their menu is priced correctly to turn a profit. I really hope so, because I'd hate to see this go away. read more

Chicken KaPrao is phenomenal...just like I would eat as a kid in school in bangkok every wednesday. If MaDee made the Thai version of Hainan Chicken rice (called "Kao Mun Gai sai Nam Cheem" that would be culinary heavan...going to keep asking :) Also get the prik khing tofu - fresh kafir lime leaves make this drier and more paste like curry the perfect combo with brown rice ! read more
