We usually visit Malbec - Pasadena and have always had a great experience, so when we heard about the Malbec - Arts District location, we were excited to give it a try. Unfortunately, our experience was very disappointing. We had reservations at 5:00 PM and were seated promptly and offered water. However, after being seated, we waited 30 minutes without any waiter coming to greet us. A party that was seated after us was immediately attended to and had their drink order taken. Shortly after, another party was seated and also had their drink order taken while we continued to wait. After about 30 minutes with no service, I had to call over the manager to let her know what was happening. She apologized, took our drink and appetizer order, and told us a waiter would be right with us. We eventually placed our main order, but about 30 minutes later, our waiter came back and told us the order had not gone through and that it would take even longer. After that, we still waited another 30 more minutes for our food to finally come out. Overall, the lack of attentiveness, long wait times, and disorganization made this a very frustrating experience. This was very different from the great service we're used to at their Pasadena location. Sadly, we will not be returning to this location. read more

The restaurant is very spacious with plenty of seating indoors, outdoors and at the bar. The menu is vast and I am not lying when I say this is the only place where I actually loved something from every section of the menu. I honestly don't know where to begin because everything was just fantastic. The service stood out right away--the manager (or owner), our server, and the rest of the staff all checked in to make sure we had everything we needed. The food came out on time and tasted incredible. The atmosphere is so calm and inviting, it really feels like a relaxing coastal getaway. What impressed me most was how attentive they were: making sure the sun wasn't in our eyes, keeping our drinks filled, and ensuring we were happy with our meals. They even went the extra mile for my dogs, bringing over a bowl of iced water without us having to ask. Overall, I can't think of a single negative. We chose Malbec to recreate an Argentinian meat experience enjoyed on vacation. We were not disappointed. The menu can be intimidating but with the assistance of our waiter we were able to zero in on appetizers, salads and a meat mixto. As there were 5 of us we decided to eat family style.The salads (Malbec and Peras) are generously portioned, fresh, colorful, multi textured and delicious. We chose the Skirt steak, Short Ribs, Ribeye and Lamb Chops for our meat selection. Of all of them I have to say, the skirt steak was best. The accompanying sauces were equally delicious. We threw in a squid ink pasta dish and papas al horno for good measure. Again, delicious. For dessert we enjoyed the gelato, chocolate mousse, creme brulee, and crepes. All were fabulous but the crepes were crunchy and sweet and especially good. We sat on the patio and were able to enjoy our conversation and the pleasant weather. Service was attentive without being intrusive. Recommendations were spot on. All of the staff were professional and pleasant. Our plates and serve ware were frequently replaced for clean service as we went through each course. This family group of 5 go out together often and I felt that price wise this was a competitively priced meal considering how much food we consumed! When the waiter heard it was my birthday he brought us a lovely after dinner drink on the house. I highly recommend Malbec for either a date night or a group dinner. Malbec has lovely service and ambience and many of the dishes tasted good, but there was a problem in the back. My mashed potatoes and sautéed veggies came out cold on the same plate as the hot salmon. My husband ordered New York steak medium rare but had to send it back not once but twice. The first two attempts were very rare and then slightly less rare, and the third time they started over and sliced it into strips which were all different levels of doneness. (Could it be the Sunday night chef?) We each ended up eating separately due to the do-overs. The waiter was accommodating, but we wished that the manager had personally paid a visit to the table to make sure we felt taken care of. At this price point, we certainly hoped for more. read more

We had such a great experience at Malbec Arts District! I made a reservation a week in advance for a party of 13 on a Saturday night at 6:30pm, and they were immediately able to accommodate us without any issue. The location is perfect--right at the end of the Arts District breweries, making it easy to grab drinks before or after, and they also validate parking for the rest of the night which is a huge bonus if you plan on bar hopping. The service was top notch. Our servers were attentive, genuinely friendly, and gave thoughtful recommendations without pushing only the pricey items--which I really appreciated for a large group. They were also super accommodating with splitting dishes, dietary preferences, and timing everything perfectly so we could enjoy the evening without feeling rushed. The food was excellent. The empanadas were crisp and flavorful, with fillings that tasted freshly made. The grilled octopus was tender and charred beautifully, easily one of the favorites at the table. For mains, the steaks were the highlight--juicy, perfectly cooked, and seasoned well, with portions large enough to share or take home. The pasta dishes were rich and hearty, while the lamb was melt-in-your-mouth good. Even the sides like the mashed potatoes and sautéed vegetables had that elevated, homemade touch. On a whim decided to check out this restaurant being in the area. From the beginning I had an outstanding experience. Gilberto was not only knowledgeable of paired wines to have with my skirt steak, but also a wonderful conversationalist who knows and admires the area and industry as well. The fact that my water cup never went below half full is a testament to the focus that the staff puts on the customers. The skirt steak was lovely accompanied with the chimichurri sauces. Keep in mind it is a thin cut, so even at medium rare it looked a little more medium, but still was very tender with its dry age. Congrats on a great start to this location Roxane and company! FOOD- The bread they served was very low quality and tastes like the Stater Bros French bread. Not what I expected at a restaurant that looks up-scale. I ordered the breaded steak and although edible, the steak was barely passing. The steak was previously frozen and tasted bland. It was topped with a thick layer of mozzarella that they probably buy in bulk at a discount store. Yes, you can taste the bad quality. The steak came with mashed potatoes that tasted like they were made from a box of instant mashed potatoes. Overall- avoid this dish. SERVICE was barely passing. Specifically, there were very 5 different dinner tables in the restaurant since our reservation was at 5:30pm and our waiter was not attentive or friendly. He acted like he was doing us a favor anytime he came to the table. BATHROOM looked like it had not been cleaned that day which stood out given the white marble tile. GOOD - the chimichurri sauce that is served with the bread was tasty. The octopus appetizer was perfectly seasoned and tender. Definitely order this. My husband ordered fish and it was tender and served with roasted wedge potatoes and both were tasty. The restaurant looks up-scale, trendy and lends itself to big group gatherings. I noticed 3 different tables with 4 or more individuals. IMPROVE- breaded steak should be prepared fresh and avoid frozen products, however, if you insist on frozen, then cook the steak with a crunchy crust and use good quality cheese on top like fontina or provolone and just use less of it. Maybe the best restaurant in the Arts District. The beef is so flavorful. We've tried a few of their steaks - some of the best and competitively priced. The seafood is fresh and better than anything you can get for this price. My friend ordered the herb chicken (pollo hierba) and added the spicy sauce for $2 extra and enjoyed every bite. My wife and friends have all been impressed with cocktails and the beer selection. The side dishes are great, fresh, unpretentious but delicious. The outdoor patio is comfortable and if it is a little cool they crank up the propane heaters. Service is attentive without bugging anyone. This is a new Argentinian place in the Arts District. I absolutely adore Argentinian food! I'm so excited that this place is here so I can come intermittently and enjoy. I no longer have to go to the Westside for Argentinian food. So let's dig in, so to speak, I came here for the Australian lamb chops, but ended up doing dine la. I had the prosciutto wrapped shrimp for appetizer, the sole for main, and the crepe for dessert. I also ordered two Malbecs during the meal. This was my first meal of the day and my day started at 4am from BOHI to Yucca Valley, so the Malbecs were well deserved. Anyway, the service was excellent. I wish I could remember my waiters name and the gentleman helping him with the water. My glass never lagged. I was so hydrated after that meal...lol. Also, both seemed to know the right time to come up to the table. At one point, I thought they were just hanging inside watching to know when to walk out. They were just so polite, professional, and nice with great smiles. Oh, and let me not forget the owner/manager who greeted me. He was also so very kind and attentive. He had an open ear and really listened. The food was good. I don't know how else to explain it. I will admit, there should have been more seasoning on some plates and less in others, especially with saffron (I think that's what was used in the rice), but in total, when I finished eating, I was satisfied and thought, 'that was a good meal'. I think that's all that is needed from a restaurant. I'll be going back to try the Australian lamb, then go again to try the steak. It's such a beautiful restaurant, and I took my doggie, Wallace, they gave him water and we kinda shared the meal. Yes, he is spoiled and my service animal so he gets everything. We visited on a weekday early evening. It was raining so we sat inside. We arrived during their happy hour and the server gave us the regular menus as well as the happy hour menus. We ordered a rib eye as well as a skirt steak, two empanadas off the happy hour menu, some sides and my fiancé ordered beers from the happy hour menu. One of the steaks was on the saltier side. The service was really great and the review could have been a four star, however, when the check came there wasn't time to look at the receipt since they bring the tablet to pay right at the table so I didn't see that they charged us regular price for all the happy hour items. When we asked the person whom looked like the manager, he adjusted the charge only to keep it as a tip which I didn't notice until later. If you visit for happy hour, make sure you are charged happy hour prices, they'll try to get away with charging you regular price. read more
