Visited this restaurant on a recent business trip to NYC. Decent food, yummy pastries, very attentive service (the order taker and servers are separate, so the order taker can stay in the room most of the time and attend to diners' needs). Only one problem, though, which is why I am dinging it a star: it is LOUD. I mean REALLY, REALLY LOUD. The walls are all solid brick so when the restaurant filled up mid-morning, the volume gradually increased as everyone had to shout to be heard over one another. They need to put in some sound-absorbing material (or at least some tapestries, maybe) to dampen the noise. A super cute cafe and I had really high hopes, but honestly had a pretty meh experience. When my friend and I came here one weekend afternoon, the line was out the door. It moved kind of slowly, and when we entered inside, the servers seemed a bit disorganized. When I was ordering, my server wasn't really paying attention and having a side conversation with her co-worker, causing me to repeat myself several times and then she rolled her eyes. I brushed it off since dealing with so many customers was most likely stressful, hoping that the food would make up for this interaction, but sadly it didn't. My chai latte tasted very diluted - there was barely any chai flavor. I ordered one of their daily pastries, the dark chocolate chili raspberry olive oil loaf cake, intrigued by both the sheer length of the name and the unique-sounding combination of flavors, but honestly it tasted like a regular slice of chocolate loaf cake to me, maybe with a hint of raspberry. The server took it away and brought it back, a bit too quick so makes me wonder how sanitary the kitchen is and if I even got a new salad. Second experience I ordered the same salad to go. Had a friend pick it up while I was working and they missed an ingredient in the salad. When I went back I was asked if it was on the side which it wasn't, but luckily took a photo for proof. I've been to this location a couple of times and it feels as if you are in a cafe in Paris. It's beautiful, staff is lovely and a lot of people watching. It's usually packed. Everything is yummy here from the sandwiches to the Nutella beignets (my favorite). The last time I went I kept waiting for my order to be brought to me and finally when I spoke up the waiter pointed at my dads finished plate and said we brought it to you already. I had to explain that, that wasn't the case and I had arrived after my family ordered so I still needed my order. The confusion was a bit annoying but I finally got my order and was very pleased. Such a cute cafe! I'm sticking to outdoor dining, but I bet the inside is nice as well! My brother and I had brunch here on a Sunday morning, with ZERO wait. The curbside staff were welcoming, and got us coffees and water right away. Despite being perched on the sidewalk, the space is welcoming and sheltered from the more obnoxious street sounds. In fact, once you get the food - all distractions fade into the far distance. There are SO MANY gluten free or adaptable choices! I had a croque madam that was PERFECTION with the right balance of sweet and savory, cheese and ham. My brother had the roast beef sandwich and we both sent back completely cleaned plates. Learn from me and take their no laptop policy serious! I showed up in the middle of a weekday when it was pretty empty inside to get some work done. I ordered about $30 of food and drinks and sat down at a small table near someone else with a laptop to start doing work. Within seconds an employee stormed over and asked us to either shut our laptops or leave. I wasn't going to sit there by myself so I asked for a refund (which they kindly gave me). I ve been going to the UES location after SOUL classes and I just love it ! It's a scene for sure lol I have to say that the butternut squash soup is by far the best I have had ! Since this was a recommendation to me, I had certain expectations. Maman was supposed to be a cozy, welcoming environment with great ambiance and aromatic coffee. They must have been referring to the one in Flatiron. I don't think I've ever ordered coffee outside and thought to myself, "I could make this better" (which typically speaking, I could not as my coffee making skills are lacking -- just like the fun in this place). Despite it being 10am on a weekend, it was packed over capacity. I ordered a small iced americano to go. My order was simple. The wait was not; I struggled just to find a spot to stand in a sea of Lululemon-clad women coming in for their post-yoga coffee, middle aged men recounting their week at work to their spouses, hipsters who probably come here everyday, clusters of tourists, and servers chatting to each other WHILE running around with trays of pastries and hot coffee. The whole ordeal was quite nauseating. The noise level was equivalent to having dim sum in Chinatown on the weekend. Not the type of peacefulness that's usually associated with cafes. When I finally got my drink, it came lidless. I came to find out the sugar and straw station (that's what I call it) is not in the location you'd expect it to be in. Most of the time, it's near the door (which makes the most sense) and sometimes it's right next to the register. It was neither... you'd have to go inside more to find it. The cherry on top was, my americano tasted quite watered-down (you can actually tell by the color if you're an avid coffee drinker). In summary, my experience was very underwhelming.
