Atmosphere: Located in a free-standing building, Mama's offers plenty of well-lit parking, though accessibility is best if you're able to park near the entrance. They offer carry-out only (no delivery) and apply a 7% surcharge for takeout. There is also an added surcharge for groups of six or more, something worth noting before you go. The interior dining room is clean, colorful, and full of wood accents, creating a classic neighborhood diner vibe with both tables and booths. Restrooms were clean, and there is outdoor seating available behind the building. A kids menu is offered, and alcoholic beverages are available. Food: The menu covers breakfast, lunch, and dinner with a focus on comfort food. Breakfast is traditional--eggs, pancakes, and one Tex-Mex choice. Mama's Cafe is an old time establishment that provides good food and good service. This past Sunday we had a party of four that ate breakfast at Mama's. We all had different breakfasts and we all liked what we had. Our server was adequately attentive and answered all our questions. When we requested modifications from the menu for our orders, these were fulfilled without question. The only real critique that we have is in regards to Mama's Bloody Mary's. Let me start by saying, we typically enjoy dining here as there is either little to no wait which for me is a huge plus as we really hate eating very late. Plus, you can find something for everyone on the menu. On our latest visit last Friday night, the only positives I can reaffirm were, there was no wait, and our server was very sweet, friendly and accommodating. I ordered a spicy cucumber martini (I do on every visit), but this time it came with no tajin rim! Our server stated it was spicy and if it was too spicy, let her know and they would be happy to fix it. Well she was right, it was spicier than usual and would've been easily tolerable if it came w/the usual tajin rim, it would helped cut the heat. When the server came back to see if it was ok or too spicy, I commented the heat was doable but I wished it was served w/the tajin rim as it usually is (with the ex exception of Charleston, they offered Old Bay - but that was a big NO). She quickly offered to swap out the glass and put it in one that had the rim but I politely declined as that seemed like a lot of work and frankly I didn't want/need all the fuss that would create. Little did I know that it was just the beginning. I ordered the Seafood Etouffe (which was described both on the chalkboard and at each table as having shrimp, octopus, squid and scallops along with spices & a trinity of veg served over rice w/toast for $28) one of the daily specials off the menu. When it was brought out, what I actually received was a bowl of rice covered with etouffe topped by 2 shrimp and some parsley and looked delicious! However, when I mixed it up to see the stuff that made up the etouffe, (aka my "seafood" ) I found quite a bit of diced up sausage chunks and a few salad shrimp that was it!!! The shrimp were so small I had to pick them out of the sauce to make sure it was even a shrimp, as it was exactly the kind you get in a can! No joke or exaggeration! Additionally, there was NO scallops, not even bay scallops, squid or octopus anywhere in sight! I checked all through the entire bowl. Frankly, when I saw this, I was really disappointed because the Etouffe mixture itself was very tasty, and if it had had all the seafood in it that was described and not substituted with sausage that wasn't in the description, it would've probably been a great meal! But in no universe am I paying $28 for 2 shrimp and a bowl of rice topped w/gravy! When our server returned, she asked if I wanted a to-go box since I hadn't eaten my food, and I politely declined, explaining that I wasn't served what was described and was extremely disappointed and taken aback that they had tried to actually serve it to folks (especially for that price), when it was missing the seafood w/the exception of the 2 shrimp on top which was a garnish plus included items that weren't even mentioned (sausage) as it appeared they were substituted for the seafood in the etouffe! Again, she apologized and advised she would go speak with the manager. When she returned she apologized again, stated "they" removed the item from our bill. I expected that since i wasn't served what I was offered, plus I didn't eat it. But what is also disappointing is that the server had to handle everything that was someone else's error. The manager didn't even stop by our table to apologize, which I've seen a million times when a guest is unhappy with something about the meal at an establishment. I will rarely say anything, unless there is an issue with the food, or I get the wrong order, but when you are paying $28 for a dish (I could've easily chosen my go to pork chop dinner, which I have enjoyed EVERY single time we've gone there!) you are expecting to at least be served what was ordered not something that barely resembles it! And FYI, if that was actually the "Seafood Etouffe" you planned on serving diners, the price needs to be adjusted to $10 as no one in their right mind will pay $28 for 2 shrimp and 5 salad shrimp from a can over rice and gravy! The 1 star was for the only bright light we had that evening and the saving grace, our server. Although there were several issues on our visit, she was not one of them nor was she the cause of any them and was generously taken care of. We will definitely rethink our options next time anyone suggests Mama's for dinner. Let me end by saying this has been the only time I can ever recall running into any issues here, so I hope it's not a premonition of what's to come. read more

The Hofbrau was far better than the classic breakfast, which was nothing special and a tad bland. Service, however, was quick and friendly. I almost didn't go yesterday because I was in a time crunch and it was right at noon. Yes, it was busy - almost every table filled. I was lucky they had room at a high top in the bar area. Ordered the crispy chicken club, which was delivered to my table with surprising speed given the crowd. It was a pretty large sandwich, definitely worth the price. Had to deconstruct it to eat it, which didn't both me whatsoever. My only gripe: the crispy chicken was a little bland, but I never would have known had I not eaten it the way I did... NIck waited on me. He was really friendly and efficient. He checked on me a couple times even though I wasn't in there long. He was quick to ensure I had everything I needed and quick to produce the ticket when asked. Love the atmosphere, too - it's hard to explain, but this joint has a diner like feel without the long counter. Very homey. I'll definitely head back to try more of their menu! read more

Went Saturday afternoon about 12:30pm with my Mom, 4 yr old granddaughter and a friend. Cafe was busy. We were seated right away, but it did take a bit before someone acknowledged us even though there were multiple people standing around. When our waiter Xavier finally came he was very friendly and personable. My Mom and I both had the Avocado BLT, though she had the onion petals and I had fries. My friend had the half portion of chicken fried steak w/mixed vegetables and Mac & cheese. My granddaughter had chicken strips and fries. Everything was DELICIOUS!!!! The BLT's had plenty of everything and a tangy mayo with just a little kick. The onion petals were a nice nugget size and the coating was crispy. The fries were crispy on the outside but soft on the inside. The chicken strips were the same, not dry. My friend's chicken fried steak was Huge for a half portion. The veggies while tasty were a bit overcooked and the Mac & cheese came out cold, but that was fixed and it was good. Sorry no pictures as my granddaughter had my phone. A dear friend was in from out of town and we decided a Sunday brunch was in order. There were very few options but Mama's was at the top of the list and she did NOT disappoint. While my partner and I have been here several times, this was my first time trying the chicken and waffles. Not your typical C&W and I must say, I will be having this again. I grew up in San Antonio but haven't been to Mama's Cafe since high school. For reference, I'm now in my mid-40s. My family tried it out for the sake of nostalgia and it was NOT what I remember. I don't know if the food was always mediocre or if my palate has just changed (I'm assuming it's a little of both). The service was attentive but there was nothing special about the food. They also have a bar only snack menu but we didn't get that far. The food was great, they have a extensive menu with something for everybody. The wife had liver and onions which was very good and I opted with the roasted chicken. It was phenomenal. Actually seasoned. Along with the mashed potato purée that was silky smooth. Had lunch there today with four other people. We shared an order of fried mushrooms which were, as always, delicious, hot and crispy & served with Mama's delicious cream gravy and ranch dressing. Our cocktails came out quickly and were all tasty. We all ordered chicken fried steaks and were so happy we did. We all agreed it was the best CFS that any of us had had in ages. We were able to enjoy a variety of items off their menu. Really enjoyed the Chicken Fried Steak and the Avocado Toast. I do wish that the pancakes had been a little more moist, and that the steak hadn't been as tough as it was. Despite this, both still tasted good. Straight out the airport and headed here to eat in the morning upon arrival. This was the first stop we took and glad we did. We were greeted and sat right away. Loved the themed cowboy boots, hats, and branded wall decors splattered all over the restaurant. We got the fried mushrooms that came with 2 sauces, homemade tasting ranch and creamy gravy. I loved how the mushrooms weren't overly seasoned and we ate every bite of the half amount. I ordered the country steak with broccoli wand quest, and the coleslaw. The quest wasn't just cheese, more like cheese that went with nachos and the coleslaw was light. The husband got steak and eggs with hash browns. I am really picky with this appetizer and these are the best I've ever had!!! Don't skip these! They come in two sizes which is brilliant.
