Manaao has a chokehold on the Internet so naturally I celebrated my birthday here. The menu is massive with a lot of familiar and new favorites. We started with the son-in-law eggs ($12) and they were fantastic. They're fried hard boiled eggs topped with tamarind sauce and fried shallots. The fried exterior gives the egg the perfect texture to trap the tamarind sauce. They're eggy, saucy, and really good. For our mains, some of our favorites included the crab fried rice ($24): fried rice with real premium crab meat, egg, and cilantro. It was plain, but oh so good. The rice is chock full of lump crab meat and has a wok aftertaste which really makes it a top tier fried rice. A new favorite we tried was the chu chee curry + fried catfish filet ($24). It's a deep fried catfish filet that sits on a bed of rice surrounded by a curry moat. I've never had a fried fish/curry collab so this was a welcomed change. The fish itself is firm in texture. It holds up well as you dredge it through the curry. The crispy texture along with creamy curry makes for a really delicious bite. We did try some of the more popular dishes: -khao soi with braised chicken quarter ($22): rich, creamy, slightly spicy yellow curry topped with red onion, lime, pickled mustard + crispy noodle -gaeng som + shrimp & cha-om omelette ($34): Thai sour and spicy fish curry soup made with Thai herbs, fish veggies, and topped with shrimp and Cha-om omelette While I thought the khao soi was solid, there wasn't anything particularly special about it. Just a standard khao soi. I also didn't love the gaeng som. It was a bit too sour for me and I thought the veggies were too dense for my liking. Obviously a great try, but I will trying the spicy pork rib soup next time. Manaao is perfect if you're looking to revisit old favorites or you're looking to expand your Thai tastebuds. That are prices are insanely reasonable if not cheap compared to LA standards. That alone is such a big draw. The place to be! Thai comfort food meets trendy dinner spot, meets excellent food and service. The place gets busy! And I can see why. For reference, they open at 4:30 and when we got there at 4:45, there was already a 15-20 minute wait. While we were waiting, the list got filled up! We can hear people murmuring, "2 hour wait??" (You can get on the waitlist via Yelp). Hubbie and I were thankful to have gotten there early. Once inside, we were excited by their extensive menu. Everything sounded so authentic, we decided to explore out of our usual Pad Thai and Pad See Ew. We ordered their Thai Boat Noodle, Crying Tiger (ribeye steak), and a fish soup (can't remember the name). The best was their Thai boat noodle, hands down. It's almost like pho with a giant bone in short rib. Their crying tiger was delicious as well. The fish soup has an acquired taste, and pretty spicy even with the normal spice choice. The place is so cute! Clean, well managed, and with trendy decor. I love the spaciousness of the tables, doesn't feel too crowded. And even with a busy restaurant, their service is excellent. I come here quite often as this is still the best Thai food in OC. You get dishes made with real Chinese broccoli when the recipe calls for it. And I can never pass on the Crying Tiger here. It is always tender and flavorful. The chicken satay is an excellent deal as you get so much chicken for on $15 as of this writing. They have strong flavors and a wide variety of dishes that truly make you want to keep returning. * Thai Hainan Chicken Rice - Extremely tender chicken with a delicious garlic/ginger dipping sauce. Even the rice was flavorful! * Pad Thai with Crispy Pork Belly: The noodles were perfectly chewy and the tangy sweetness was a perfect contrast to the crispy pork belly. My only negative here is that the pork belly was perhaps too hard (albeit still tasty)! * Mango Sticky Rice: This was the perfect mango sticky rice. Finally got to stop by and check out what the hype is about! We came here on a Monday for lunch and had no wait around 11:15am. We were seated promptly and we tried the boat noodles, khao soi, and grilled squid, with a Thai iced tea. Being Thai, I am pretty picky when it comes to eating out at Thai restaurants, and Manaao was pretty good. Food came out pretty quickly. I had a bit of an issue with the timing though. The boat noodles came out first and looked really good. My khao soi didn't come out for almost another 10min, during which we got the grilled squid. Sort of a weird ordering of food coming out. Also, they brought me the wrong khao soi, then brought us an extra bowl of boat noodles. Not entirely sure why... Anyway, everything had great flavor. For the boat noodles, I liked the broth a lot. Good depth of flavor, and the texture of the broth was similar to what I've had in Thailand. We didn't get an option to choose the noodles, and they gave us sen lek, which was fine. I liked the sauce on the side and the crispy pork rinds. The noodles started to soak up the broth and expand as I was waiting for the khao soi, which made the choice of sen lek not the best choice. But the soup itself was good and had a variety of meats inside. Good amount of veggies as well. The khao soi was also pretty good. Nice thick broth, mildly spicy. I spiced it up more with the condiments provided. The noodles were pretty good and I liked the crispiness. Add in red onions and fermented mustard greens and I was pretty happy. There was a ton of chicken in the broth - I had to pack some up. The grilled squid wasn't that good. Tasted mainly burnt, even though there wasn't a lot of char, which I found weird. Could have used a lot more of the dipping sauce. I wouldn't get it again. The Thai iced tea was pretty basic - nice and refreshing. I did like the decor of the place, and I appreciated the Thai playlist! They were playing some current pop while we were eating. While the food was good and the dishes I saw at neighboring tables looked pretty good as well, I probably won't come out of my way to eat here. But if I were in the area and the wait wasn't too bad, sure! read more

If you are searching for the best Thai restaurant in Orange County, this spot takes that number one spot. While other locations have their "hit dishes", they are good and importantly, consistent. Flavors are very unique to each dish which identifies themselves well. Didn't like the crispy pork on top of our Pad Kee Mao much but the noodles is good on its own. Another protein should fix this until they address the crispness error here. Service staff is amazing. They check in on you and respect your space. Love their attentiveness and recommendations when asked. Since this place is poplar, peak hours can be a lengthy wait if you don't plan ahead. Parking is another item to contend with. Carpooling, showing up early, and avoid high traffic time and you'll get seated pretty quick. When they open is the best time. I like this place but you come and try yourself. Tried the Khao Soi w/ braised beef and really enjoyed it overall. The broth was thicker than most I've had. It had a rich and flavorful taste. The portion was generous. I ate half and still had some to take home. The crispy noodles added a good texture too. It did get a little strong/salty for me after a while, but I'd still come back to try more dishes. I've been here twice in the past two weeks, and I really wanted to love it... but honestly, the experience was more meh than memorable. Let's start with the welcome. During my most recent visit, the host at the front was so pushy I felt like I was being rushed onto a flight that was about to depart. Not exactly the warm, relaxed vibe you hope for when going out to eat. Not to mention, it was my friends' birthday lunch and they didn't even bring out a birthday dessert! :( As for the food: we ordered the larb, which was... fine. Not bad, not great--just kind of sitting there politely on the plate without much personality. It felt like it was missing some key flavors and didn't exactly inspire a return order. The khao soi was similarly underwhelming--perfectly edible, but not the rich, crave-worthy bowl you hope for. The highlights were probably the yellow curry and the crab fried rice. Although, calling it crab fried rice might be a bit optimistic--there was about as much crab in there as a beach after high tide. The restaurant's expansion does look nice, I'll give them that. But unfortunately the food doesn't quite live up to the bigger space--or the wait. Don't forget to sign in on the iPad or you'll have to wait. All noodle dishes ordered were very good. Amount could have been a bit more. For some reason, proteins for stir fried noodles were the usual pork, beef, shrimp, tofu, etc. but NO chicken, which was so weird. The crazy amounts of people waiting outside is for a reason. This spot slaps like no other Thai I've had in so cal. Super fast service. Staff is really nice. Inside is IG ready. The food is on another level - truly. We ordered 4 things: khao soi (5/5); crab fried rice (4/5); pad see ew w pork belly (5/5); and shrimp rolls (4/5). I've had Khao Soi at a dozen places so far, and this one tops them all. Flavor packed broth, tender beef and soft and crispy noodles. I just wish it had more pickled veggies to add that sour taste to round things out. CFR is a banger with tons of crab. The rice is delicately seasoned and not too crumbly or clumpy. Pad see ew had the right ratio of noodles to Chinese broccoli and the pork belly was SUPER crisp. Shrimp cakes were a nice change from the standard egg roll. Diff wrapper and filling. There were lots of groups, foodies and celebrations inside. So that probably adds to the wait times. Easily one of my top favorite Thai spots in OC right now. They specialize in the classics but making them soooo right and so tasty. This place is always packed so come early or get yourself on the waitlist if it's open. The staff members are very nice and food comes out quickly! Here are some of our favorite orders: 1. Morning glory with pork belly: Seems simple but they do it so right and it's a great vegetable dish to accompany your meal. 2. Green curry with braised beef and roti: The flavor on this curry is insane and the fresh roti is soooo good/pairs well with the curry. 3. Crab fried rice: A classic and done so right! They are very generous with the crab. There's a green sauce that accompanies this that is so fresh and tasty! Great to take home and eat for the next day too!! 4. Mango sticky rice: A MUST!!!!!! 5. Sweet roti: I've never had this before but I was sooooo happy we ordered this. Again the fresh roti here is made so well and the sweetened condensed milk makes this such a good sweet treat. I love pairing our meal with a green thai tea or their longan juice. They are very generous with the longans. Again, easily one of my favorite Thai restaurants around town. Based on my experience I'm curious as to what people enjoy here. I ordered the Mama Tom Yum Hot Pot with river prawns and my husband got a curry. Both dishes were very sweet which is not what we were expecting. Also, the river prawns were mushy. I would have expected them to be more bouncy and have a bite to them. For now I don't understand the hype of this restaurant. Maybe I'll need to give it another try. read more

Visited for the first time on a Monday afternoon so there wasn't a line and service was quick. The interior is cute and there's quite a lot of seating. Our server was ok. Ordered: Khao soi, pad kee mao, curry fried rice (crab I think), crying tiger, and papaya salad. I had a manaao Thai tea as well. The khao soi is heavy on the curry. If that's something you like, I would recommend it. The noodles were kind of soggy though. The pad kee mao was verrrry spicy even for someone who eats spicy food regularly. When the heat wasn't numbing my taste buds, it tasted delicious though. Very yummy. The crying tiger is good, especially the sauce. The papaya salad was a papaya salad, nothing particularly special. Fried rice was amazing, as expected of fried rice. The Thai iced tea was good, kind of pricey for what it is. It's just regular Thai lemon iced tea, not sure what makes it special enough to be called Manaao Thai iced tea. Overall, food is pretty good but I wouldn't call it comfort food. The wife and I have had this spot on our bucket list for so long and we FINALLY got to try it! They did not disappoint Service was superb and the table settings/interior design made the place feel like you were out on a fancy night out. The only drawback was that the noodles themselves were a bit soft but that could just be my personal preference. Sooo freaking good!!! Went on a Sunday and got there at 5pm and added ourselves to the Yelp waitlist. First check in text was at 5:40pm and then the second text to let us know we would be seated was at 5:52pm. Definitely a popular spot so I recommend coming early. Parking was a bit tough but we found a spot. The inside was spacious and clean and our servers were friendly, always checking in, and efficient at refilling our water. We got the crab fried rice which was pretty good, especially the green sauce that comes with it. Not sure what it is but tasted kind of tangy. The pad Thai was with beef and I was pleasantly happy and surprised that there was some tofu in it as well. Prior to coming in and seeing the pictures, the pad Thai did not look that appealing but oh wow was I incredible wrong on that. The flavor was absolutely perfect and I can't wait to come back and get it again. My boyfriend got the hot pot and the tom yum flavor was amazing. Perfectly tangy for me, though my boyfriend thought it was too citrusy. He was happy with the amount of food provided as he typically needs a good amount to be fulfilled. His only criticism was that he wishes there were more ramen noodles. And seriously saved the best for last... the dessert! The Thai pandan crusted + coconut ice cream on cream pan's premium white toast, I would eat again as well. oh my goddd. this place was good!! they've got their system down pat. it stays steady busy so staff is constantly scanning the entirety of the place to deliver and clear dishes. they are friendly, attentive, and want you to enjoy good thai food. it's cutely decorated and kept clean. i think their main object of focus is a yellow rubber duck. i have no clue what that means for them, but for me, it was a cute and different touch. i imagine there can be a bit of a wait for larger parties but if you are a party of 4 or less, you will be seated right away and taken care of. the highlight of my meal was the fish in yellow curry. perfectly crispy batter and the curry was not overpowering. next time i want to try the crispy pork belly because there will be a next time! read more

This is my first time at the new location. The place has definitely become more spacious with the lovely lime theme still going strong. Still a huge crowd on weekends so plan accordingly. The staff is friendly and helpful. We got roselle juice and butterfly pea lime slushto drink. For entrees we got pad see ew and panang curry. Roselle Juice- This is a hibiscus based drink. It has a nice floral taste with just the right amount of sweetness. Butterfly Pea Lime Slush- This is a refreshing drink! You get a strong lime flavor with a sweet finish. Pad See Ew- The noodles are soft and perfectly chewy. We got this with beef and it was tender and juicy. The veggies have a good amount of crisp and the sauce is flavorful. We love Manaao for so many reasons. The first of which is the staff is always welcoming-- especially Wise. With how crazy busy Manaao is every time we come in-- it is such a sweet surprise to be welcomed by Wise! She makes everything run so smoothly. The next best reason is the food, it is genuinely reminiscent of the home cooked Thai food I was raised on. The flavors are all spot on. Our favorites are the papaya salad (try the Laos style for something new), the Yum, Green Ribeye Curry with Roti and Holy Basil. When we mix it up the grilled octopus and jowl and delicious additions. The Khao Soi is so flavorful and always hits the spot on a cold day. The restaurant is always clean, orderly and welcoming. The only thing I did not enjoy was the Maano thai tea. It was pretty much a thai without the cream/milk, and instead like. Not saying its bad, its a personal preference. However I did enjoy their normal thai tea. I came here twice within a week. Service was consistently great. Food wise I like the khao soi with soft shelled crab. Service is quick once you've been seated. They're quick to swing by your table to take your order, and food comes out fast! Dine with friends so you can try multiple items on their menu! My favorite thing we ordered was the Mama Tom Yum Hot Pot, made with Mama instant noodles. Really great balance of hot and sour and lots of delicious ingredients like mushrooms and fish ball. Manaao is my favorite Thai restaurant and I owe it mostly to the Chu Chee Curry. The fried fish on the bed of rice is perfectly crisp and battered every time, and the curry is warm and flavorful. All of the other entrees and appetizers I've tried have been delicious. The only downside is the parking and the extremely long wait times. There is always a crowd of people already waiting before they open and you can only join their Yelp waitlist on their tablet in person, so sometimes we just opt in for takeout instead of dining in to avoid the wait. read more

My friend and I joined the waitlist off-site and were probably on the waitlist for about 1.5 hours on a Saturday night. We ordered the papaya salad, morning glory, and khao soi. I was extremely pleasantly surprised since I usually do not gravitate towards thai food. The papaya salad was refreshing and the pork belly it was paired with was crunchy and tasty. The morning glory was perfectly savory, and very homey. The khao soi was packed with flavor and paired extremely well with the crunchy soft-shelled crab. I can see why there's always a 1-2 hour wait for dinner. The food here was wonderful. We usually come here to order the khao soi but this time around we decided to order the fried catfish curry. It was super crispy and the catfish was fried nicely. The curry was full of coconut milk and the rice was cooked perfectly. Not to mention that the portion sizes were really generous as well. My new favorite Thai spot in the OC! It gets pretty packed here. You can try getting on the a Yelp waitlist, but cannot make a rsvp. I just tried this out at lunch and came before 12pm during the week, and lucked out. All the dishes are so flavorful. Mild spice is perfect for folks that enjoy a hint of spice without having a lingering aftertaste. I love the green curry with roti! It was my favorite dish, along with the pad Thai. The food was authentic and definitely considered comfort food. The staff was very attentive and overall appreciated the good service. The parking lot can get pretty crowded and is small. A very solid spot for Thai. The crispy pork was good and the khao soi with the braised beef was loaded with flavor. Definitely worth trying. The wait times however can be long as they don't do reservation, so expect to wait at least an hour at peak time. Second time we came to Manaao and are pleased with their food. We came for dinner and arrived before 5 pm. There was no wait at that time. However, by the time we left, there were lots of people waiting to be seated. My favorite dish is the fried rice with crab meat. We will come back again to try other dishes.
