My husband and I are still trying to find places to go around the area and stumbled upon Manila Turo Turo when our original Filipino brunch place was closed and what a great decision it was. Located in a small plaza, there was plenty of parking available around 10am on a Sunday (heads up, their days of operation is Thursday to Sunday). Parking is free. The inside of the place is a good size, most visitors seem to grab food to go but my husband and I stayed to eat and it was good because the food was fresh. The array of food options available left us wanting more and we originally came here with the idea of getting 2 breakfast plates, we ended up getting a few additional items as well. Overall, the flavors were on point and delicious. Service was friendly and attentive and the lady manning the counter even gave us free sinigang as our breakfast plates were taking longer than anticipated and it was great - the perfect sourness that I love in my soup. Each combo plate comes with two generous scoops of white rice and depending on the size of your selected combo (1, 2, or 3 items), you'll have a few options of items to pair with your rice. I usually don't go to Filipino restaurants unless they're true Mom-and-Pop spot, because I always end up comparing them to how my dad cooks. This place definitely had that Mom-and-Pop vibe, and it did not disappoint. We stopped by for breakfast before heading out on our weekend vacation and ordered the Longsilog, Tocilog, and a Cornbeefsilog to-go. The garlic rice was spot on--just the right amount of flavor, not bland and not overpowering. Some places are a hit or miss, but this one was perfect. I asked for my eggs over medium, but when they came out, I could already tell they weren't quite right. I'm very picky about eggs--I don't like them super runny. When I mentioned it, the server immediately brought me two new eggs cooked exactly how I asked. Bravo! They even let me keep the first set of eggs, which my boyfriend happily took. The staff was so nice and accommodating about it. Everything else was delicious too. The longanisa had great flavor, and the tocino had that slight crisp, caramelized edge that made it just right. The corned beef we took to-go was also tasty, with some fatty pieces that kept it juicy and flavorful. This restaurant is only open during daytime hours, so when I found myself in the area early on a Sunday (which is rare), I had to finally try this place out. The small space is a bit cramped, but at least there's a little bit of indoor seating in case you want to dine in. No public restroom though. The workers were super friendly and provided excellent service. There was so much to choose from at the food counter and so many tantalizing options on the menu. I ended up getting the longsilog with plain white rice. Been craving pinoy food for a long time and since Manila Garden and Cherry Garden have long since come and gone, I just end up making it at home. I was craving the Bangsilog (marinated milkfish with garlic rice and a fried egg) Portions are EXTREMELY hefty and the price is VERY reasonable. I also ordered a side of Lechon kawali and they hooked it up! The crispness, the tenderness on the inside, just what I was looking for. It wasn't dried out like other places. It was raining when we went so they had a small leak by one of the tables, but Tita made sure she blocked it for everyone to avoid. I'm glad I checked it when I did because I have been going here on the weekends for silogs and ala carte when too lazy/busy to cook but want Filipino food. The sauce is a perfect companion, but the lumpia are equally delightful without it. Pancit bihon is another must. I was really happy with it! I loved the details, from slicing the green beans, to making sure we had lemon wedges. It was a little peppery for my kiddo, but I enjoyed it and would order again. The noodles and veggies were the perfect consistency. Anytime I try a new Filipino restaurant I order these two dishes to help me decide whether to order again. The woman at the register greeted me upon my arrival, checked on my order, gave me accurate information about my lumpia being about to come out, and she asked me lots of questions about how I found the restaurant. She said the restaurant was typically frequented by local Filipino people and mentioned that Yelp and other online review sites have brought more and more types of people in to eat. So stop by and support this yummy local spot! The location is a bit unassuming, and it's not easy to find from the street, even if you're driving down Alvarado because you have to turn right onto Lake Arrowhead Ave to see it. The restaurant is located in a strip mall in between Ardenwood and Union Landing, in between a wax center and an empty building. Even if you aren't in the immediate area, it is worth the drive. I'll preface this review based on the breakfast menu items we ordered of Tocilog and Bangsilog, and that I haven't tried the other items from their hot tray selections. Having said that, I'll round up this place for an overall 3; 2.5 stars for the food and friendliness of the staff a 4. First off, the food. The tocino is on the drier side than what I'm accustomed to. I like the the sugar on my tocino a little bit more caramelized with the meat being a perfect balance of garlic and sugar. Their tocino didn't do that. As for the bansilog, it was on the salty side and pretty small. The one good thing about both plates was that the egg was cooked perfectly. Sometime you order a silog and the egg is cooked over-hard instead of over easy. I'll try the other food next time, but won't be ordering the tocilog or bansilog again any time soon. read more

Opened just about a year ago, Manila Turo Turo seems to be a place that can be here for a long time. Inside the restaurant, it felt really homey and comforting. The owners are also very sweet and welcoming as they asked me what my name was and what brought me in. There was plenty of options, and I went with the Bisket and Mechado (my friend helped me with the names of the dishes). The Mechado was my favorite of the two as it was packed with tender beef and vegetables. I am curious to see how their breakfast would be, so I plan on coming back to try that out.
