But if you are looking for something that will feed your body and soul, this is your place. The owner is awesome! The food is great without leaving you sluggish. Food was wonderful, serving staff great, owner bit of a tyrant. We understood that this is a BYOB establishment. Not being in the food business, we brought beer in cans, and a small teeny-tiny flask of tequila for my wife, who does not drink beer. Owner saw flask and proceeded to yell at us, saying there was no alcohol allowed. Confused, we asked about the beers. No response other than to yell some more about us trying to get him closed down. Not being in the industry, we didn't know that "beer and wine" is different than liquor-type alcohol. Owner didn't explain, just berated us in a fairly long rant and walked off. Made the rest of the evening a bit uncomfortable. Server tried to calm things down,seemed a bit embarrassed when he brought us the burnt empanada. We won't be back. The atmosphere is hip and welcoming; it's family owned; the staff is engaging and super friendly, and mind you, we'd not even ordered yet!! This is the best food in town. Not because it's the tastiest (though damn close), not because it's the cheapest (though the best value in town), not because it's the most beautiful (it's appetizing, but not pretentious), not because it's the healthiest or the freshest (though I can't think of any place that does that better). But because it's real food, made with care- for you. Martin makes everything from scratch and makes ALL of it to order. Sometimes he's out of stuff - this is a GOOD sign. We live in the desert people so when the fish is gone you can take heart in knowing he's not over ordering seafood that's gonna sit around for days. His carne asade tacos are excellent, and his chile con carne burro is a fantastic meal. However, my favorite all time from him is the chicken mole torta with a fried egg on top- served with rice and pinto beans. Of course- homemade salsa. The staff here is great- though a strict system of service is not something they follow- nor should you expect. You're eating in a man's kitchen, so if you want something you have to ask. The upside- you'll get what you ask for- every time. The food is consistently good and so is the horchata and the tamarindo. Bring your own beer if you want- he'll put it in a red cup for you so you can savor a cold one of your choosing with your great food. There's great outdoor seating here and the decor is funky and inviting. Check it out and tell Martin to make you something special. He'll take care of you. read more

Hands down my favorite spot for Mexican food in Tucson. Martin really know how to bring the flavor out of each of his dishes. I always feel welcomed coming on. The service is nice. The horchata is perfection. It's funky, cool, and unique atmosphere you would expect on Fourth Ave. The Calabicitas are a must have. I typically have the Egg Torta, or anything with Mole. I have yet to have something I don't like here. Major plus are the vegetarian options. Plus not having a liquor licence, you get to bring whatever good booze you like into the place. Excellent. My husband and I went for lunch. We both had burros. They were quite large, we had to take half of it home. My husband had chicken mole, and I had beef with Mayochobo beans and rice, cooked in a pasilla pepper sauce. You can tell fresh. It was delicious. The salsa they served was out of this world. I just came back from Mexico on an emergency hospital visit, I've been in Mexico for a year, I ordered Chilaquiles and I received a plate of cheesy greasy slop! When I told the owner I couldn't eat it he called me every name in the book and aggressively kicked me out of his establishment! I was just trying to get some food in my belly before I headed back to the hospital. Martin himself brought us some delicious chips and salsa, and then proceeded to berate his employee loudly, publicly, and profanely for not getting our chips to us in time. The owner of this place is a complete jerk. I arrived Thursday night and was greeted by him cursing out one of his employees, berating him for making lemonade incorrectly. The next day he spent catcalling the pretty girls who walked by, and on Sunday he went over to the booth of a visiting artist and literally SCREAMED at this poor little artist for placing her small cart of items on the sidewalk next to his store. It wasn't even blocking any part of the crappy little storefront, but he decided that attempting to humiliate this woman in front of a large group of clients would make his place more popular. Had such a pleasant casual dining experience on a Friday night and the fresh, fast, made from scratch food wowed everyone in my group, including the vegetarian. Martin does things his own way (no fryer or microwave in the restaurant, he told us) and does them well. He was friendly, helpful, and a little sarcastic.
