I belive you can get omakase during lunch. They had hairy crab at 2 of my visits but not all. It is seasonal and they will not always have it.

The sushi rice with roe was on the house and was the perfect pairing with kizami wasabi. Everything was soo good, it makes you want more! The area where you get the sushi from the refrigerator space is very cramped. People are just up and down, left and right. If you get a rude person, they're just plowing through you to get their sushi from the sushi case. I find myself dodging people and often, knocking some of their products off the shelf behind me. Has it stopped me from coming here to get sushi? No. But I do find the setup to be pretty annoying and anxiety provoking.

One thing I did notice was that the refrigerators they use to store the boxed sushi didn't feel cold at all, which was a little concerning, especially with raw fish being stored inside. Overall, good value for the price and it's a decent spot for a quick pick up for lunch and eat in your car type of situation if you're on a crunch time.

One small perk: even though they're a cash-only business, they let us pay with Zelle, which was super convenient! Honestly, I wouldn't mind coming back to give them another try. Maybe we came on an off day, and I want to give them the benefit of the doubt.

We went there for lunch and didn't get the Omakasa, which seemed like the best option. For the items we ordered, quality was ok, but not impressive, we expected better based on their reviews and price. I'd say if one's craving for good sushi/ sashimi for lunch in San Gabriel Valley, this is an option for considering. But if one's willing to go a bit further, there's a lot much better options in Little Tokyo and surrounding areas. read more

This is newly renovated omakase spot is my fav place for quality sushi and service. It's a very decent fine dining Japanese cuisine, the atmosphere is very nice. The staff is friendly and attentive. The ingredients were incredibly fresh, and each course felt thoughtfully prepared without being overly complicated. A few of my favorites were the toro, which was rich and literally melted in my mouth, and the aji, which had a really nice springy texture and clean, fresh flavor. I also loved the sesame tofu topped with uni. It was creamy and delicate, with the nuttiness from the sesame pairing surprisingly well with the sweetness of the uni. We ordered some sake to go with the meal, and the whole experience felt relaxed and intimate, which made it perfect for a special occasion. Even dessert was memorable. The black sesame ice cream had such a strong roasted sesame flavor and wasn't overly sweet at all. Overall, one of the better omakase experiences I've had in the area, especially at this price point. Fresh fish, great pacing, and a really enjoyable meal from beginning to end. Would definitely come back.

The fish is fresh, and they offer more exotic selections instead of just the usual yellowtail, salmon, and tuna. Yet we had been sitting there for a full 15 minutes waiting for one of the three servers speeding around. Finally one of the servers took our orders, couldn't understand her since she was taking very fast so we had to have her repeat herself several times. When we got our bills it didn't reflect the price for lunch. Server said because we put our orders in after 4..... after sitting for 15 minutes to have our orders taken. While many things have evolved over the years, one thing remains unchanged--the consistently excellent food and attentive service at Oba Sushi. It was great to see that the quality that made this place memorable in the first place is still going strong. For lunch, I ordered the Mango Tango Roll and the Healthy Roll, along with an unsweetened iced green tea. The Mango Tango Roll featured salmon, kani, mango, ume paste, sprouts, and oba leaves wrapped in cucumber and topped with a house-made mango sauce. Despite being a rice-free roll, it was surprisingly flavorful, refreshing, and satisfying. The Healthy Roll was equally enjoyable, combining avocado, cucumber, yamagobo, takuan, sprouts, mango, and brown rice wrapped in soy paper with sesame seeds. Both rolls were fresh, well-balanced, and packed with flavor. The unsweetened iced green tea was the perfect accompaniment to the meal. Refills were complimentary, and the hostess thoughtfully brought out a carafe of tea, making it easy to refill our glasses throughout lunch without having to wait.
