I came in here for a midweek lunch! It's always fun to try a new restaurant in the area. I had the mushroom pasta and the ricotta toast. The mushroom pasta was amazing everything was perfectly cooked and well balanced. The flavor profile was great! I highly recommend this spot. Went to Mattinna for weekend breakfast. It appears to be a cafe during breakfasts hours. It's very cute inside. I was surprised it was empty because it was so cute and the food was really good. It's a little awkward when you enter because it looks like you should wait to be seated but you actually need to go to the counter to order. We got the vanilla bean cream and espresso with the prociutto and cheese biscuit. The biscuits were SCRUMPTIOUS and they gave a generous helping of prosciutto. The espresso was strong (as it should be). I'm excited to go back and try their breakfast bruschetta. It was very cozy inside and a nice rainy day breakfast. read more

Hate to dislike a restaurant on our little neighborhood strip, but we had a very strange encounter here today. My partner has a somewhat unusual (although certainly not unheard of) name for a woman and when we went to pay for our lunch, the manager returned with our check and asked my partner to verify her name. She did and then he paused and asked to see her ID. It would be fine if this was standard protocol at the restaurant when someone is paying with a card, but we've dined here before (with me paying) and it isn't. While getting her wallet and ID out, we asked why and the manager noted it had "crossed [his] mind" that the card was not ours. It was quite off-putting. While our lunch pastas were quite good, the experience was definitely a negative one. We left feeling so weird. Of note- no wine or alcohol was ordered that might need an ID. read more

Came for lunch a few days ago, waitstaff was excellent and kind. The pasta however was disappointing, especially at the price point of $32 after taxes for one dish. I got rigatoni with pork sugo. The pasta itself was a bit bland (didn't taste like the pasta water was salted enough). Maybe I misunderstood but I thought a sugo was a tomato sauce-- or at least a SAUCEY sauce--my sauce was very soupy and the pork was large, very chewy/rubbery chunks, so not pleasant. It wasn't the WORST pasta I've ever had but again if the menu price is $28 I would hope for either very delicious pasta or at least a large portion size (of which it was giving neither). Ambiance inside was nice but idk if the food isn't great and the price is high ... not so sure it's worth it ? Again maybe I just had a one time bad experience. read more

Not ready for prime time. We have 8pm rez and have been standing for 25 minutes waiting. No offer for anything and no estimate for a table. Don't come until they iron out the kinks. Update: We were finally offered half a glass of prosecco after about 35 minutes, and table became available close to 9, nearly an hour after our reservation time. Ironically, at this time, the restaurant almost emptied out completely. It was pretty obvious that they took far more reservations for 8pm then they were able to accommodate. And even after sitting down, it took quite a long time for someone to take our order. Just inexcusably bad service. As for the food, we had octopus and asparagus to start, and 2 pastas, the mezzaluna and the bucatini. The octopus was outstanding. Super delicious. Everything else was meh. The pastas were pretty expensive (~$28) and in a rustic style. If you're expecting something similar to SPQR, they are not like that at all. Wine list was a bright spot. Well-rounded and affordable selection of Italian wines from all regions. As was the dessert, and excellent chocolate cake. However, while to food/wine was pretty good, the service was just so atrocious that we won't be back. read more

food: 4.5/5 aesthetics: 5/5 service: 4/5 i stopped by mattina after seeing soo many pics of their stunning bar and candy cap mushroom lattes on instagram, and i can confirm that mattina is a must-visit cafe in sf!! although its not advertised on the menu, mattina offers oat and almond mylk alternatives for their drinks. their candy cap latte was deliciously not too sweet, and as a barista myself, they have solid espresso. mattina's ambiance is beautiful too, and i love how open and airy the space is. add all-day pasta to the description, and you've got a perfect place for a brunch date, or a mid-fillmore-st-shopping treat!! although the food menu didn't seem vegan-friendly, hence a star deduction, i would definitely come back to try a pasta if there's an option, and of course, a candy cap latte :) read more

Went here for the first time this evening. Service was really good, food was good. We shared 4 dishes. Brussels sprouts sounded great -chili and maple/ they were good but we both agreed they needed a bit more flavor and heat. Had a bruschetta with mushrooms. Also good but really rich and filling. Our waitress suggested 2 shareable and 2 entrees-if was way more food yjdd an we needed. The tagliatelle with mushrooms was quite good. Rigatoni was a bit of a miss for me. Everything sounded great and I really wanted to love the meal. There is a lot of great Italian food so not sure I'll make my way back soon. read more

Wow! We had a truly excellent lunch experience at Mattina. We didn't actually order any of the mains so I'd definitely like to try to go back for that, but what we did have was absolutely delicious: First the sugar snap peas with horseradish were a revelation. The level of freshness was out of control and the dish was simple, yet special at the same time. Definitely don't sleep on the vegetable sides - they are doing wonderful things with them. Next up was the gnocco fritto. OMG. These felt really decadent. It could have been simple or boring but they were perfect hollow pillows for stuffing with prosciutto and roasted grapes. I'd never even thought to try roasting a grape before and it was so good, especially with the other flavors. I would go back for just this dish and a glass of wine alone, really. Then the meatballs came. I don't think they were quite as revelatory as the previous two dishes, but that's not to say they weren't wonderful. Rather they were perfectly executed simple meatballs with some toasties to spread them on. And then of course there's the wine. Both glasses that my husband and I had were really great, well priced, and definitely not that SF thing where they underpour and overcharge which happens so often. Really nice pours of wine. Beyond the food and beverage we found the service to be impeccable (very prompt and polite) and the space itself was beautifully appointed. I'm already a huge fan of Mattina and look forward to coming back for some mains and cafe snackies. read more

I'll start off with the good - The food was very tasty at Mattina, well seasoned and interesting. The vermouth spritz was also great. Ambiance is very nice. The bad - the prices are high for the portion sizes. The service was very slow, and we waited a good half hour for them to bring us the check and then we ended up just going up to pay as we couldn't get anyone's attention. Worse than that, our server had a horribly runny and sniffly nose that he was rubbing on his sleeve etc while handling the food. It was pretty gross. Matinna is a hidden gem just off the bustle of Filmore Street. You can get an early morning coffee and exquisitely prepared baked goods. Lunch and dinner are also prepared and served with love. The gem salad is a favorite and combined with the blue shrimp and pork sausage just takes the meal to another level. Pair it with the Prosecco . Shout out to Sonia who answered questions about the food and wine and brought tastes or Primitivo and Chianti to choose to pair with the succulent lamb Tbone. the ricotta & pickled strawberry bruschetta was fine. the box cut spaghetti (kale pesto) was so salty yet bland at the same time. the spicy tomato 'nduja bucatini was essentially half sauce and a small bundle of noodles. the only redeeming quality was the pasta texture, which was perfectly al dente. the strawberry semifreddo was too firm and had a somewhat dry texture with barely any strawberry flavor. the service was a pretty slow and we had to try several times to get the server's attention, especially after the entree and to get the check. read more

I'm giving my experience dining at Mattina for opening night dinner service a 5 because we were pleasantly surprised. The service was excellent. The food was tasty and the menu had several appealing options to meet my entire groups needs. We tried two pastas; they were unique and yummy! We also had a beef entree and the branzino which I definitely recommend. They only had two dessert options but both were very good. The decor is beautiful and updated, very comfortable seating. Super cute restaurant with a lovely interior I walked in the other day and was shocked to see I was able to get a seat, but also super happy because I've been wanting to try this place It's not easy to find beautiful restaurants in San Francisco and this is truly a beautiful restaurant space. I loved it as a vegetarian the vegetarian items were incredible Salad was a lovely portion with the arugula and slightly sour apples so delicious and pistachios over top. Oh my goodness. The mushroom pasta dish is most definitely the best pasta dish I've had in a long, long time I know it can be hard for restaurants to make vegetarian pasta dishes and I love that this one was a bit hearty. Delicious and a great way to end my evening. The wine was also divine Just so happened that chef Matthew was behind the counter I didn't know it was him until I checked out the website He was fun to chat with, and he definitely elevated the experience. Belittling them, cussing at them, and otherwise just being a jerk, to the point where I wondered if it would turn physical or if I should get involved. Some tension in a work environment is normal at times, but this was so clearly toxic and disrespectful. No amount of quality food could make up for that...but when I got my food and my order was wrong and there was a large hair in my meal, so there were literally no redeeming factors. 1/5 stars. I made a Yelp account because of how disturbed I was by this experience. If this is what the management says to employees while a customer is there, what are they saying when a customer isn't there? read more

Really blown away by our brunch here. I'm surprised to see some middling reviews, because everything we ordered was super fresh and flavorful. The pasta, especially, really impressed us with the perfect al dente cook and balanced flavors (we've had truffle pasta elsewhere that overdoes it with artificial oil, but the tagliatelle here is spot-on). First few times I went, the coffee program was the best in the area. Precision shots (scale in use). Milk was steamed to the right temp. Perfect latte art. Unfortunately that seemed to be a result of one barista. Now the coffee bar is just another average coffee program (albeit with great beans / equipment). This was the worst dining experience of 57 years in San Francisco, and I've had some bad ones during that time. Forty-five minutes being ignored before they took our order; over an hour before food began to be delivered, but only sporadically, with appetizer coming after one main course, and an hour and a half before the second main course was served. The food was okay, but not worth the wait. Do NOT go here; do NOT encourage bad-service restaurants like this. There are too many good places that deserve your patronage. This was worse than a place I went to south of Market in the late 80s that had cockroaches crawling on the walls. At least at that place I felt that the roaches cared that we stopped by. read more

The biscuit. Yikes. They need to call it something else, "a dry brick of a scone", perhaps."Thick, dense bread", maybe. Anything other than "biscuit". I was truly looking forward to the biscuit and was so disappointed when I finally bit into it. The mouthfeel was like cold, hard oatmeal and just as flavorless. The pear jam could've made up for that if it actually tasted more like pears and less like candied ginger sauce. The charcoal grilling adds nothing-not even heat. The bruschetta was great, the ricotta was delicious and so was the bread. The mushroom latte was amazing, totally a must try. If they could've just applied whatever energy that makes the latte and bruschetta great to that funky ass biscuit.... I'll still give it another try, the pastas look delicious and the remodeled restaurant looks very sexy. The front tables are next to a nice sunny widow and are set bistro style-looks like a nice place to work from home for an or so-while the rest of the room is softly lit and romantic. They can keep that biscuit though. read more
