Our waitress had two favorites on the menu (tortelloni and spaghetti) : we each chose one. My coworker ordered a salad that was large enough to share. Everything was beautiful and tasted phenomenal. Honestly this place feels like such a hidden gem! It's been a month since I was here and I've lost count of how many people I've suggested it to! Exciting new Italian restaurant in the Filmore that's a bit on the pricey side. Most of the pasta entrees are $27+ and the proportions are sufficient for 1 serving, just barely. I ordered the yellow corn ravioli and the tricolore bruschetta. The ravioli had a yummy creamy sauce it was served with a spoon because there's more than just the ravioli (garnished with plenty of yellow corn, red pepper, and okra if i remember right). The service was great - the server was very knowledgeable about items on the menu and very responsive. And the atmosphere is really nice. It definitely feels like a modern, upscale spot. I really enjoyed the sugar snap peas and tagliatelle. Very solid dishes with great balance of flavors. I was very excited to try the ice cream sandwich, but it did not meet expectations. The ice cream layer was very thin and uneven, and some got the short end of the stick when it came to sharing. The sandwich part was also still very frozen/hard to bite through. The Interior is new & modern, the service is on point, and their baked goods are addicting. What really stands out to me is their unique combination of flavors. I've never had the Mushroom Latte before, but the mushroom fragrance compliments the soft latte flavor surprisingly well. The black pepper & cheddar scone is so satisfying to bite into. Such a gem! Really excited that Mattina is open - and I think I personally like it more than SPQR. It's a great neighborhood centric spot and I love the concept of a more casual all day cafe. My favorite so far is the mushroom tagliatelle which is an incredibly well executed classic mushroom marsala situation that hits all the right notes when I'm fiending for a shroom pasta. We ordered take out during their soft opening and ordered the biscuit sandwich with an egg (honestly the best way to eat it), a plain biscuit with jam, 2 lattes, and their miso butterscotch chocolate chip cookie (at least that's what I think it was). The service was fast and friendly and I loved seeing them make the biscuits on the charcoal grill. The inside was really nice and am excited to dine in one day. The biscuits were not like the southern ones here in the states, but more akin if you took the best parts of those biscuits and scones and put them together. And I didn't think the black pepper would work but it totally made them pop. The cookie was honestly one of the best I've ever had. Will be getting them and the biscuits again! Came here to try the biscuit for lunch. Staff was helpful and friendly. Ordered the biscuit with butter and jam ($8). I LOVE SPQR's donuts so I was very excited, but I thought the biscuit was just ok. It comes prepared with the butter and jam spread on the biscuit, like a sandwich, with the butter on the bottom and the jam on the top. The butter itself was great. I would prefer to apply the amount of butter and jam myself, and keep the biscuit crispy if I want to eat the other half later. Lunch menu looks good and I'd be interested in coming back. Tagliatelle was good but I only had a bite. I liked the very strong umami flavor, quite a unique dish. The atmosphere was amazing. Do you ever go out to eat for dinner and wake up mad about it the next day? That was my experience with Mattina. Was really excited to try it out and had dinner there on 8/28. First the good- the lamb was really tasty as was the branzino. Now the bad- we didn't have a server, the prices were crazy for the service/ portions, and the food was just average. It was such a weird experience. Not once did anyone come over and talk to us about food (when we sat down or when people dropped off dishes) which you absolutely should when you're paying $60 for a branzino. No one made recommendations or asked how we were doing or if we liked our food. We had to ask whoever we could flag down to order every time we wanted something so it made it seem like there was no designated server. The portion sizes were tiny for what they were charging. I understand food costs are high but the lamb skewer was miniscule and charging $22 for 5 oz of very average wine is wild. At least keep the 5 oz part to yourself or buy smaller wine glasses?! It felt like we were waiting on ourselves the whole night. Eating tiny portions at our tiny table, drinking tiny pours of wine from giant glasses. I can say with utmost certainty this place will not be open in two years. Go to any other Italian spot in the city. I'm begging you. read more

Their wine list is great, with mostly Italian wines. Their coffee tastes like in Italy. The service was very good and friendly. The decor of the place is beautiful and sleek. I've been highly anticipating trying this new-ish spot for quite some time. The anticipation from reading many write ups and articles hyped it so much and I was sorely disappointed. The concept seems ideal for this area of the city- coffee, wine, and pasta- kinda genius. Execution: flop. My third star is merely for my appreciation for the VERY few employees who were working and had the look in their eyes that they wished to be saved. First, the small "boutique" restaurant in the former Out the Door space is beautiful, light, simple, and charming. The menu seems promising, boasting fresh pastas, an impressive wine list and coffee to hang in the coffee Mecca that is San Francisco. For the price of the dishes, the taste/flavor and appeal were inadequate. For instance, I ordered the Duck Ravioli ( I was so intrigued and excited to try this). The ravioli, yes, fresh made pasta, were each the size of my palm with the tiniest area of filling (not even the size of a quarter) of a cheese mixture and perhaps duck fat, but no duck in sight. The roasted grapes also appealed to me and, too, were just off the mark. My friend ordered the Malfadine (seafood puttanesca) and maybe got two shrimp and some very chopped up and hard to find calamari and octopus. The Fall Squash side we shared was appropriately priced roasted squash with minimal kale and pumpkin seeds. The wine was great, although the pours seemed short. I,also, was excited to try a Mushroom Capp. The mere flavor of coffee was absent in this sweet concoction that I literally took two sips of. (I did ask if it was supposed to have espresso, because maybe being called a Mushroom Capp meant no espresso and it had mushroom powder as is a thing these days and I very much enjoy.) The kitchen had more staff than the front of the house trying to serve a full restaurant. Most tables were looking around and getting antsy for any attention to order, clear plates, or get a check. Being in close proximity to other tables, we heard the complaining of the patrons and the excuses from the manager. The manager who very easily could have helped the lone server, yet chose to a stand around in his nice suit and gaze over the crowd. Only after multiple complaints did said manager start "checking on" tables. Still no help in sight. I grew up in the restaurant business and have many years under my belt. If this were my restaurant I'd first re-assess my mission as a restaurant, look for new management, hire and train adequate staff to match the caliber of the menu pricing, and re- evaluate the dishes and their caliber to, also, reflect the prices. Nothing was timed. One dish arrived, then the shared side, then the remaining pasta dish a long wait later. Over all, a big let down of an experience that should have been seamless. read more

Was really looking forward to trying out this place because of the great reviews it had gotten here. We went on a Friday, 5:45 pm and we got seated right away. Server was friendly and expressed her surprise when I said I was ordering the pasta for myself because it was "family style" serving so I was expecting a bigger serving than average. We ordered the brisket, arancini, tagliatelle, and the bufala milk ice cream sandwich. The good: The tagliatelle was good and worth ordering but it is *not* family style at all so if you're hungry and with a party, get more than one ;) The ice cream sandwich was delightful, it's a frozen snickerdoodle with the ice cream in between, drizzled with olive oil and salt. The combo was great. Now this serving was family style, you can easily split it four or five ways and be satisfied. The bad: The arancini was meh, whatever was inside was soggy and bland in spots and salty in others. Service was friendly but slow. Perhaps a spectacularly off or understaffed day, but the check took quite long to get to us, the table next to us waited long for their main dish and check as well. And we're pretty patient people. We've been to restaurants here where service was slow but there was acknowledgment. I guess it was more painful this time around because you could see where the bottlenecks were and staff huddled in spots. We were just really raring to go especially after: The ugly: The brisket. Good golly it was extremely dry that we didn't even eat a quarter of it between us. In the time it took for someone to ask us how the food was, the brisket on our plates had darkened and hardened into more unappetizing fare -- the potatoes were good though. I used it to sop up the rest of the tagliatelle sauce. The brisket was so bad that we had to let them know but the server just took it to the bar where they had a huddle about it but no one talked to us about it after, which was disappointing, but they were probably underwater. I was excited to take our annual holiday group lunch to Mattina; unfortunately, we were very disappointed. We went for the food which was fine but nothing outstanding. The service was very poor. The staff was overwhelmed with no manager to support, and so our table just languished. We had to open and pour all of our own wines. We had to ask for the table to be cleared and reset. We had to ask for coffee. They made a big mistake on the bill. We could look past all of this if there was a genuine sense of hospitality at Mattina but that is not the case. No greeting, no checking on the table, no thank you or goodbye. Really, no appreciation for the customer. Overall, we found it expensive for what they served and the service was so unorganized that we would not return or recommend to others. After some shopping, we were in the mood for pasta, so we walked into this place. The first alarm bell should have been that we immediately were asked if we had a reservation. The restaurant didn't look busy at all, and how long does a lunch usually take? Our choices were reduced to the bar, or a side table near a drafty wall. Alarm bell number two was when the waiter asked if we had eaten there before. When we said no, he proceeded to explain "how things work" (we're familiar with how restaurants work, by the way). We each ordered a pasta and a side dish. The flavors were good, but the portions were dismally small. The food was over in three bites. The waiter had said "All of our dishes are meant to be shared", so we were expecting something shareable, and that's not what we got. The only thing the restaurant was generous with was the amount of salt in the dishes. No other customers came in the entire time we had lunch, so the question about having a reservation didn't make sense. This lunch wasn't cheap. Two people, no beverages other than tap water, two pastas and two sides, $100+ with tip. And we were still hungry. read more

I must say my entire dining experience was extremely disappointing. First, when I entered the restaurant, the staff did not greet me. Even after I smiled and said, "Hi, how are you?" they simply looked down at their iPad without responding. I thought this might be the standard service at Mattina, but when other guests entered after me, the male host warmly greeted them. It was hard not to feel that I was ignored because I am an Asian woman. I had reserved a table for three in the Dining Room at Mattina. However, after checking my reservation, the male host led me directly to the Chef's Counter at the back of the room and insisted that this was the table I had booked. It wasn't until I showed him my reservation email that he admitted there were no available seats in the Dining Room. So, what was the point of making a reservation three days in advance? In the end, the host seated us at a makeshift table near the entrance, where two smaller tables had been pushed together. My friends and I had to stand at the doorway and wait while they prepared the table, which had not yet been cleaned. Up to this point, no one had offered any apologies. From the moment we were seated to the time we ordered, no staff members came over to introduce the menu or ask if we needed drinks. In fact, all the staff seemed to ignore us, to the point where I had to approach the host, who was clearing tables nearby, and say, "Hi, we are ready to order." In this seemingly busy restaurant, other guests were receiving attentive service, with staff checking if they needed additional drinks. Meanwhile, we had to pour our own water. No one introduced the menu to us. The only service we received was being asked whether we wanted still or sparkling water. When the food was served, the dishes were placed at the very edge of the table, almost falling off. When I tried to move one plate to the center of the table, my fingers were burned because the plate was so hot. I do not want to jump to conclusions about discrimination at this restaurant, especially since it is run by a Michelin-starred chef. However, it's hard to believe that in 2025, Asian individuals could still experience this kind of treatment, especially in a restaurant of this caliber.
