Took my daughter to try this relatively new Italian SF spot while she was in town for the holidays. Food was excellent! The service was exceptional (and they were even short handed the particular day we visited! The wine by the glass was absolutely outstanding, which is not always the case with by-the-glass wine menus. Parking is pretty good considering it's close to the busy Fillmore district. Being a casual patron of the superb SPQR I just recently found out about their new spot Mattina around the corner from SPQR. Sleek looking and inviting and now open for lunch. Pricey, but what isn't, I had what I consider to be the best piece of Smoked Brisket that I can remember. Looking forward to lunch later this week. Was starving when I dropped in for lunch. Cute ambiance seems like a great place to grab lunch with friends. I tried the little gem salad with blue cheese dressing and it was soaked with dressing and way too salty so meh. The mushroom tagliolini was also on the salty side and pretty expensive for the small portion. Ice cream sandwich was pretty decent prob my favorite. Service was good. read more

Walked in about 1 hour before closing after the gym. Although many tables were open and set, the host took a long time to guide us to a table and sat us on a cluttered table in the corner of the restaurant away from other parties. Even the waitress was confused as she pointed us to sit on a clean table instead. However the host begin to make a "shoo-ing" motion at my girlfriend, motioning us back to the cluttered table. The host cleared the cluttered table while we were sat down. Although there were only 3 other parties in the restaurant, service took a long time. It took 15 minutes for to put in our orders. My girlfriend and I almost got up and left as we did not feel welcome at all. Additionally, although the food was alright, the portions were very small. We ordered 1 appetizer and 2 pastas, yet were left still hungry. Perhaps the bad service affected how we felt about the food. We truly felt that we were not treated as well as the other customers. I was looking forward to trying this restaurant but it didn't hit our expectations at all. read more

The service was very attentive and welcoming. Ambiance very pleasant, decor warm and inviting. Food was satisfactory. The pastas were heavily sauced but still good flavor. We were disappointed by the Brentwood corn dish only because the menu didn't state that it was "creamed". It was delicious but we were anticipating a light, fresh dish. Went for dinner. I would give this place 3.5 starts if I could. Ambiance was cute and trendy, appetizers were amazing, wine was great. We got the bolognese and the brisket for mains and were underwhelmed. Staff was kind. Food came out quickly which I guess is great but also felt very rushed. This review is for the food only. We went there and were excited about trying it and while everything was fine, nothing really stood out. It was a very decent meal but nothing that would make me want to go again ever again even if I live in the area. We ordered the following: - prosciutto which was OK. They could probably get better quality prosciutto which is less stringy. 3 stars - The arancini was the best thing we ate. 4 stars - The crepe with corn was a 2.5 star dish with no salt or flavor. - rigatoni with bolognese: 1 star - pasta with mushroom & truffle, though neither of the 4 people could taste any truffle: 4 stars - branzino for what it was with little flavor and no salt @ $58 was a 2.5 star dish For their prices, I expected a whole lot more. This is not going to be great "all day restaurant" at these prices and these dishes. The chef can use more imagination and produce things you don't see elsewhere that are going to be appealing to the modern American consumer. It was standard fare, and the quantities were fine but if I'm paying again then I would reserve my budget to go to Flour & Water, Cotogna or Norcina or Che Fico. I found the ambience of Mattina to be OK. Rather bright and cold. The wine list was meh at best but truly I felt it was not thought through, single dimensional and quite frankly a complete throw away. And the desserts were sub par. The crumble was terrible. I don't know if I would return. It was all OK but nothing where I would say "we absolutely need to go to Mattina..."sorry but not exciting or interesting at all. I did not have a great experience unfortunately. We went for dinner. The food was ok, nothing special, and for the price it should have been better. Not even memorable. The service was amateurish, the waiter didn't know the menu or the drinks, and was not interested in doing much more than dropping plates on the table. The room is loud, very loud, this is not a good place for conversation. While it was not bad, it certainly wasn't great and not worth the hype. I won't be rushing back. read more

My friend and I went to Mattina last night after finding out they are open for dinner service now! The food was excellent and came out fast. We had the arancini, little gem salad, tagliatelle, bucatini, and ice cream sandwich. All our dishes were very flavorful and so different. Our waiter was nice enough to cut the ice cream sandwich so we could easily share it. My only knock on the experience was that we were left awkwardly standing inside the entrance for about 10 minutes before we were greeted/seated. The staff was really busy, but I expect this to be something that is fixed going forward. After this, our waiter was great the rest of the evening and our experience was seamless. read more

This review is just for Saturday morning coffee and pastries. I'll try to avoid singling out anyone. Pastries available included a biscuit, a few scone varieties, and a bunch of cookies. I chose the biscuit and was upsold to a prosciutto egg and cheese biscuit. This was unpleasant to eat as a sandwich. I think the elements would have been excellent by themselves, but the biscuit was like an enormous dried out thing way too tall to bite. It was kind of loud in the place between the coffee machine, music, and people trying to talk over it all. Except for the cashier. Standing a little back from the counter, not concerned with the fact everything said needed to be double checked, and even then not 100% sure it was captured. For instance, what was ordered was different than what displayed on the POS, and when questioned, just a silent holding up the bag with the presumed item with an annoyed expression. The ordering process was so weird, still tip 20% because maybe it was just an off day, but I won't be going back. Coffee is from a roaster I don't care for but is local, so points for that. Latte was too hot and not much effort in latte art despite no one else waiting at the moment. Two more details that reflect what an establishment is trying to accomplish. No one seemed especially excited to be working there, so maybe they're not getting the best treatment from management? Interior is very nice with beautiful furniture, placemats, and hand made ceramic dinnerware. Definitely points for all that. Location is unfortunate to be on a busy one way street next to a cannabis dispensary and across the street from a Walgreens. Compared to charming Fillmore, this is not that experience. It could be lunch and dinner are completely different experiences than this cafe review, but I'll likely never know. read more

After we sat down and ordered, we waited 45 minutes for our food (the server then proceeded to miss multiple items that we ordered). Absolutely loved our evening at Mattina. We went on a Friday night at around 6:30 without a reservation, and were able to get a nice, small table in the front. The Tagliatelle is divine. Little gem and radish salad, too. Chocolate cake -- dark chocolate pound cake sort of thing with apricots and amazing chocolate sauces -- is dreamy. Service was perfect (especially Anna). Such a great addition to the neighborhood. Can't wait to go back. read more

It would be nice if they expanded their offerings in the cafe area. For example, if you could order an appetizer or a glass of wine, it would feel more casual - right now it feels like there's a big separation between people there for a sit down meal and those coming for something more casual but still want to sit. read more
