My husband and I ate at Maypole today for the first time. We had eaten in this building many times in its various prior incarnations (The Bank, Emmett's) and on this beautiful Friday in June, we were delighted to sit out on the lovely front patio and have lunch. The food that we had was very good. I had the Brussels sprouts salad. The Brussels sprouts are sliced very thin and mixed in with carrots, cabbage and other veggies. There is an option to add either chicken or shrimp for $6 but I went with all veggies. The salad was delicious and quite filling. It has an Asian flavor but also quite a bit of heat because it also contains chiles. It was not too spicy for me (I ate every bit of it), but I do think that the heat could be dialed down a notch so that the wonderful Asian flavors can be enjoyed even more. It's an excellent salad, however, and I'm sure I'll return and order it again at some point. My husband had the fish sandwich. It was very large and he loved the panko breading, which also appeared to contain some seeds (maybe sesame; almost looked like what you'd see on an everything bagel). He thought the sandwich was delicious and also said he'd get it again. It comes with a side of fries but they let him substitute Asian slaw for the fries and he really liked the slaw, too. For dessert, we split a piece of the Ube purple yam cheesecake because we had never had Ube. The cheesecake, although purple, tasted like normal cheesecake. It was very good but the taste was not really unusual. The coconut crust on it was quite tasty. Now for the only reason I am only giving Maypole only four stars instead of five: The iced tea! I know it's hard to believe that an excellent restaurant can be felled by iced tea, but that's the truth. My husband and I both ordered iced tea. I realize the restaurant probably wishes we'd order an alcoholic drink but it was lunch and hot outside and iced tea sounded good. We both ordered unsweetened iced tea, but my husband normally puts diet sweetener, like Splenda, Equal, etc., in his. I drink mine straight, with lemon but without sweetener. It turns out that the regular iced tea at Maypole is some kind of weird green tea with mint. It didn't really taste like mint; it had a vague cinnamon flavor that I was able to drown out with lots of lemon. Still, it would not have been my first choice for tea. My husband asked the waiter for sweetener and it turned out that they had no sweetener. The waiter instead brought him a small pitcher of "simple syrup" (which of course wasn't diet; just made with regular sugar). It took the whole small pitcher to sweeten one glass of tea. The waiter (who was very helpful and personable; no problem there at all) brought us refills but my husband needed more "simple syrup." The waiter brought another small pitcher of it, but said they were almost out of it! So, on the third round of refills, my husband said he'd better switch to the "sweet tea." Big mistake! That tea turned out to be a dark brown, extremely odd, cinnamon-flavored concoction. It tasted like cinnamon/sugar/water. It was awful; almost undrinkable. Maypole needs to just brew up some regular tea - Lipton, Gold Peak, Pure Leaf, whatever - really, it's not that hard! Other than having terrible iced tea, Maypole's food is really good and the service was great. We recommend it and we will definitely be back. read more

Maypole is a unique place. The food is fantastic, but it is not traditional and that is part of what makes it fun. If you're looking for a place to go out on a limb and try something different then I highly recommend this place. (Hint: Kimchi Mac N Cheese=amazing) read more

We thoroughly enjoyed our experience at Maypole! We went on a Sunday night with some friends. The food was excellent and we were able to try a lot of different dishes because of the family-style set-up. The pork belly and garlic rice were our favorite. While we were there, we also announced some exciting news to our friends and the server brought us out celebratory dessert on the house! It's also a gorgeous ambiance inside. We had dinner at Maypole last night and it was fabulous. We ate family style and started out with the lumpias. They were so good, we almost ordered a second serving but decided to wait for dinner. We had the fried chicken (juicy and flavorful), Caesar salad and spicy noodles. It was a great meal. We will be back! read more

This was our second time at the restaurant, the first being July for my wife's birthday. This summer it was the hot new thing and my wife wanted to try it out. It made a middling impression; we sat at an awkward table with backless chairs that seemed chosen for its unusualness rather than its function. The food was just ok, overpriced, and under-portioned. This second time the server was great, if a bit awkward. The menu had changed; the chicken sandwich, which some of our party enjoyed last time, is no longer on the menu. I was still a bit concerned with some of the prices in light of the expected quality, especially because the menu recommends "2-3 plates per person" but doesn't indicate which size of plates (there are 3--small, medium, and large). We ended up ordering the burger (med. plate), and 3 small plates: bok choy, hush puppies, and pot stickers. Nothing was bad, and I did eat some of everything, but the food does not reach the level promised by the accompanying aesthetic, atmosphere, and menu design. The burger was pretty good, but swimming in this kimchi cheese sauce that added more moisture than it did taste. The bun could've been purchased at Mariano's. The pot stickers again were good, especially when dipped in the sweet and spicy sauce, but felt more like bar food than a creative, Philippino take on a classic. The bok choy was dressed with interesting flavors, but was thick with moisture...it seemed like it was boiled and then roasted. The hush puppies were bland and uninteresting. To be sure, we could've ordered the wrong things, but it feels as though the restaurant has a bit of an identity crisis; it's supposed to be Philippino fusion, but it feels more like American pub-style food with a few unambitious twists. Also, I saw no obviously Philippino people on staff, and I'm pretty sure they played Latin music all night. To be fair, our bill was just over $50 with the tip, which I found reasonable for the 4 plates we ordered and the amount of food we both ate. Neither of us ordered drinks, however. I probably wouldn't choose to return unless I heard a rave review from a friend after a menu update, especially in light of the growing number of good mid-range restaurants in downtown Wheaton. read more

I've dined in at Maypole multiple times now and recently did delivery/takeout. Both experiences have been excellent! The food is different, in the best way possible. A unique blend of Asian and comfort food. The things that stand out for me are the kimchi Mac n cheese, the Brussel sprout salad, the burger, the spicy aligue noodles and any version of the fried chicken. The service has always been top notch and is always helpful as well. The ambience is fun and funky with beautiful decor. They did an amazing job renovating the old Emmett's restaurant. WOW!!! What a find! The space is gorgeous without being fussy and especially welcoming. Loved all the interesting touches which paid homage to the history of the building. The host Doug, filled us in about the details of the space. He along with Mike & the rest of the staff took good care of us with their recommendations and subtle attention. Delicious, interesting cocktails by a first class mixologist, try the Irish coffee & dragonfruit Bellini. Our brunch consisted of a chicken & biscuit sandwich along with the fish sandwich, both were delicious! Ask for extra aioli on the side, it adds great flavor to the chicken sandwich. The space is lovely and the food is good, although there are very few healthy options on the relatively small menu. Our 4 top was two tables pushed together that were at slightly different heights. It made eating the shared plates awkward. The place is also very noisy making conversation difficult. The service could use some tweaks. Went on a Saturday night. Got there about 6:30, patio was packed which gave us idea it was a good place. Walked up steps to nicely decorated reception area, but nobody was there. After wondering around for a few minutes reception arrived back and although inside was less than 1/3 full took us to a side area in front of bar. We waited for about 10. Minutes wait staff passed multiple times but were only interested in patio which was filled with 20 somethings. Finally bartender came over ask if we wanted a drink, we asked for Long Island ice teas. He didn't look like he was familiar with it, went back to bar and grabbed a book to look it up. Surprise they were almost decent. Still no wait staff. Patio was more important. Bartender came again took our order, our selection were fish sandwich and pork belly sandwich. Sides were fries. Meal came and fish hung out both sides of the McDonald looking bun and fries were extremely soft. Pork belly was two 1 inch squares of pork fat on same type of bun with a wilted piece of lettuce. Fish was good but a bit over cooked and pork belly was nasty didn't taste like bacon and very chewy. A good bun would have greatly improved it. Food quality was not great. Service was lacking except for bartender. Biggest shock was bill, ice teas were $19.00 each with Tito vodka. As he stated they were a specialty drink. A bit steep with most places charging between $8.00 and $9.00. When bill came I noticed several extra charges. Tip included on it @ 25% and a service charge for over 6 people. I pointed both out service charge was explained as a computer error as was tip. We did leave a generous tip on table only a few pennies less than the recommended one. Would we come back again, maybe try their breakfast, but a very shaky maybe. We wish them luck, but probably without us this year. read more

We decided to try it out on a Saturday and made reservations a week in advance. We were so looking forward to a new restaurant in town. Very disappointed in the food The place is gorgeous and the bar area is beautiful. That is about the only positive. Drinks are extremely small and pricey. Food is not much better. Lacks flavor and they were out of the bistak after it was ordered on a Saturday night at 7:45. Really!! Extremely pricey!! $200 for 4 people and that was one drink each and one was a coke. Not much of a menu and Ala carte. Service was nothing to brag about. I was really hoping this would be better and will not recommend or go back. Save your money and hit another area restaurant in the area. read more

Let me first start with the seating. I really liked how the inside of the restaurant is decorated and set up. Very bright very colorful, which makes the diner's feel very comfortable. The one thing I did not like is the seating is very close to each other, which makes it difficult to have a conversation with your group without overhearing others next to you. Second, the staff was very attentive, from the hostesses to the waiter and waitresses. I really like how they supported each other. Example, as our waiter, got very busy with multiple tables the other waitresses or waiters stepped up and helped out with our table. Now for the food. My wife has been there before, and really liked the fish, so she wanted to try something different this time. We tried the chicken for two, which was very moist, but not very flavorful, along with the Asian slaw, which was also kind of bland. Overall, I thought the menu is limited. We did like the drink menu, and we did feel that the drinks were reasonably priced. However, I felt that the meal for two and sides were a little over priced. I would recommend you try this restaurant and post your thoughts. However, I am not sure I would go back again. read more

I am a local and have been so excited for this restaurant to open. I have now been twice, and unfortunately the experience has not been fantastic. It's a beautiful restaurant and they've done a magnificent job with the design. It looks like something that belongs in the city. The drinks too are very good. The service is friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, the food just isn't that good. The Lumpia did not have much flavor. It was bland. It needed to be seasoned more. The concept of the mac & cheese was really cool, but again lacked flavor. An order of pork belly bao only comes w two. The plate looked bare and the flavor again was just ok. Overall, each item that we tried needed to have more Asian flavor. Nothing was spicy and everything lacked any distinctive flavor. I'm really hoping that the chefs will continue to work on the menu. I'm a local, so I want this place to be a huge success. I'm planning on trying it again in another month. Hopefully the food will be much better. read more

Beautiful decor, but several tables are designed for large groups and/or have backless benches - not comfy for us. We were a group of 4 and had to argue with the hostess to be seated at a table of 4 rather than a "group" table. The menu was not descriptive enough - we had to ask a lot of questions to decide what to order, and the waiter didn't have answers for several of them. My cocktail was great but others in my party were handed a glass with no ice and some soda water in it with a separate shot of pink gin - what? All four of us gave it a C at the most. The crunchy fish sandwich was good but the bun was mushy and soggy - I took off the fish and ate it with a knife and fork. The veggie dish was loaded with soy sauce - my husband didn't enjoy it. The meat on the steak dish was too rare for my friend's taste - she gave it to her husband to eat! This feels like a super trendy spot for young people rather than a place for a great meal and conversation. We won't be back. read more

Looks like they are possibly having some growing pains with getting started especially at the bar. My friend and I sat at the bar. We loved the updated decor in the space compared to the previous business, very bright and upbeat. The menu could definitely use some healthier choices, except for salads the majority of choice are either fried or heavier meat items. We asked our bartender several questions about a few of the featured drinks and he did know seem knowledgeable about them. We settled on a coconut daiquiri and a bitter melon Negroni. Both drinks were strong and good. At one point one of the bartenders broke a glass container on the bar by accident. We also noticed some cocktails were being poured from a spigot so we got the impression that some cocktails are already pre-mixed. Considering the prices of the drinks one would expect them all to be made individually by hand. I had the fried chicken sandwich which was ok. On our way out we were hoping to see the lower level. A sign at the stairs indicated we could ask for a tour. This building housed a bank years ago and when it was The Bank Restaurant there were tables downstairs and one could view the huge old bank vault. I was hoping my friend could see it. When we asked the host at the hostess stand he informed us this would not be possible because the entire downstairs level consisted of a private social club. We saw a server bringing some food down the stairs so someone was dining down there. He said we could find out more information about this private social club on the restaurant's website. However there is nothing at all on the website about a private social club on the lower level. Since the bar area was full when we were there perhaps they should extend the bar area to the lower level and make it open to the general public. Hopefully some of these details will be improved in the near future. This is a very unique and beautiful space. Now the food and service needs to match. read more
