Half a pound of macaroon crumbs!!!!

Extremely disappointed in the macaroons this trip. My family purchased these for decades! The recipe is NOT the same at all. All I brought home was a half pound of CRUMBs! I thought maybe I crushed them but no, the texture is all wrong and wouldn't even hold together to pick one up. Maybe this was a failed batch that was sold at full price $10 per half pound. Anyway, I also bought fortune cookies which were very good, otherwise the macaroon would get zero stars!

    Cow ears!!! $6/bag

Seriously the only place in the Bay Area that still sells cow ears!! Was so excited I bought 3 bags. Cow ears r a bit on the thicker side than I'm used to so it makes for a bit harder of a chew, but still has the same great taste. They apparently have plenty now, so there is no need to wait in line or limit yourself. Cost is $6 per bag. Our fav was the sesame cookies! So light, fresh and crunchy, just like I've always remembered them to be! Yum! We bought a pound for $7. They also have mini moon cakes for $3 so will need to try that next time! Owner was very friendly and accommodating and pleasant to deal with. Parking is really hard to find bc it's on a busy popular Main Street.

1 lb flats and 1/2 lb almond cookies

Did you know Chinatown had two fortune cookie factories? I didn't either. For the longest time we went to Golden Gate Fortune Cookies for our fix. Well we dropped by here today and picked up 2 bags of oops cookies (the flats) and a bag of mini almond cookies. They carry fully formed fortune cookies and multi colored ones. There were also old school Chinese cakes made into a shape of fishes and other objects. The lady at the counter was nice. No samples but their cookies cost less than Golden Gate's and they didn't sucker me into paying for a reusable bag like GG did. The factory is at the back of the store and you can see the employees making the cookies. The flats were not as sweet as GG's which is good. The almond cookies remind me of the old school ones that tastes really good. Not the lard flavored ones that are sold in stores now. Drop by and buy cookies from Mee Mee. Lot less wait, not crawling with tourists and definitely easier on the wallet!

Old school looking bakery with old school Chinese service. My mom likes cow ear 'cookies', so I make an effort to get her some each time I visit San Francisco. She says they're not comparable to the ones you just get at the supermarket. Many Chinese natives come here to buy these cookies in bulk. Lines may form but moves quickly when the new batch of cookies are done. I've tried their regular fortune cookie chips and the black sesame version as well. Walk over to the Fortune Cookie Factory for them instead. Just stick to their cow ear cookies from here.

The cow ears quality is so bad, hard and thick. It hurts my teeth and mouth. It used to be thin & crispy. Do NOT buy, not worth it.

    So pretty!

My girlfriend and I took a stroll in here after dim sum nearby. I was immediately drawn to their colorful fortunate cookies and my girlfriend and her husband was also going to get a bag until they spotted a container next to the register labeled "Reject Fortune Cookies" Hahahaha! We were done!! It was very funny, because not only did the bag contain some broken cookies, imperfect cookies , some pieces were just flat (like they didn't even bother folding the cookies at all) haha hilarious). Naturally we had to get both. We all walked out happy. Service was what you would expect from the other reviewers. The man begins the register wasn't rude, didn't make small talk or asked us any questions. So I guess it really should be a 3.5 but given that we didn't have a bad experience I can't really ding them. Also, they make GIANT Custom fortunate cookies! I didn't ask how big they could make them but there's a sign that says they're the home of the Giant Fortune Cookies! Cheers!

I walked in today for the first time for a Food assignment for my class. I didn't know what to get so I asked the young cashier what were the best Moon Cakes for beginners. I got two Red Bean Pies and One Pineapple pie but it was so good I had to come back for more Pineapple pies. The cashier was nice enough to get me a Lotus Pie on the house. . . As for the reviews, I didn't check the 1 or 2 star reviews before coming here but luckily I had a really good experience. I'm assuming the cashier lady doesn't work there anymore since there haven't been any bad reviews in over a year. .... will definitely come back again for more MoonCakes and maybe try some Cow Ears in the future as long as the "mean" lady isn't there . :)

Walking around Chinatown, we came across Mee Mee Bakery. Family wanted to check it out, so here we are. They had a nice variety of baked goods at very reasonable prices. This place won't hurt your wallet. Employees are friendly enough and quick. Tried a few things from here and enjoyed the consistency of everything, flavor wise, it could have been better. No seating available here, just get your goodies and go.

I am prejudiced towards old time family businesses, probably because of family history. Immigrants coming to a country not knowing anyone, the local language, nor having financial means to start a business, just satisfied with making ends meet. Underdogs indeed. In Chinatown, word travels fast these days especially food wise. There is an alley location fortune cookie factory that is more famous and definitely tourist friendly. This low key spot next to the Chinatown Walgreens beeped on my radar due to chatter about a place on Stockton Street that garnered lines, a rarity these days in these parts. When I walked in on a weekday morning, there was no one at the counter, just a gentleman inside the baking area pouring ingredients. After studying their counter offerings for a few minutes, he walked out and asked how can he help me. Besides grabbing a bag of flat fortune cookies and a bag of "defective" cookies, I asked him for a pineapple moon cake (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=v7Q4km8lHwHiMr2DtWrztQ&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q). I also asked about the item that prompted this visit and he told me to come back at noon. After paying for my sweets, he gave me the inside tip on how to ensure that I get this item which I asked a coworker to help me with a few days later. Following his instructions, I soon had a bag of what everyone sought: cow ears (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=vKIzzTpyJf44rCbcqDqCWg&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q). I actually scored two bags as I gave one to my parents. My lesson from this was that cow ears are okay in my palate but I wouldn't particularly crave them. Three stars on the food and one big star for the gentleman for the helpful advice.

I arrived at the bakery before it opened on a weekend morning, and there were already a couple of brave souls in line. I waited only about 25 minutes for the bakery to open, and once doors officially opened to customers, I was in and out in no time with my fresh pastries in hand. I enjoyed my almond croissant as soon as I got back home, and now I fully understand why Arsicault is at the top of everyone's SF bakery list. The almond croissant was still warm, the inside struck the perfect balance between fluffy and gooey (from the almond paste), and the exterior was nicely crisped. The almond filling is super rich and decadent yet not overly sweet. I also noticed - and appreciate - how Arsicault's almond croissant doesn't include toasted almonds on top, since these can often get over-baked and taste bitter. I definitely agree this is one of the best pastries in SF now.

I definitely feel like the team implementing the 7:45AM start time to line up has helped a lot. Not only is it better for the neighbors, but it also makes the whole experience feel a lot less chaotic compared to showing up super early and scrambling to get in line. Everything feels much calmer and organized now. As for the pastries: To be honest, it really depends on what you like. I'm one that gravitates towards pretty much anything with meat and chocolate. Because of that, most of their savory/meaty and creamy pastries are always a must for me. They're super flaky, flavorful and decadent. You can really tell how much time and effort they put into making everything as high quality as possible, especially since you can see them making everything from the window while waiting in line. All in all, I think there's been a lot of improvement over the past year with some trial and error. Their pastries have always been delicious and I personally think it's worth the wait. I recommend getting to the area closer to 7:45AM so you have a better chance of being towards the front of the line. If not, it's still better to come before opening, I just wouldn't recommend getting there right before they open. By then it's not guaranteed that you'll get everything you want since they do run out depending on how many people are there.

My husband got in line while I waited outside. It's on the first floor of the Japan Center Malls and easy to find in the corner. We had the drinks right away and I enjoyed their honeycomb toffee latte ($8.25) while my husband ordered a flavored lemonade. The Honeycomb latte wasn't overly sweet and the honeycomb on top was a nice treat. The honeycomb itself was sweet and crunchy and you can either pick it out and eat it or stir it into your drink and let it melt. The lemonade my husband ordered was on the sweeter side, but was super refreshing for summer. If you like sweet you'll like this- if you prefer less sweet or tart it may not be for you.
