The tea was quite special and highly recommend ordering a pot of their Fresh Li Shan Oolong. For dessert, we tried their house made special ice cream- a chocolate black garlic coconut ice cream, what a unique, yummy flavor. Their beer with black tea was quite special too (Toastea). We appreciated the attentiveness and communication from our server (and owner), Minty. She provides lots of suggestions and you can tell this place is a passion of hers and her partner. I wish I could give this place 6 stars. The food was incredible. Below is my recollection from memory after wine, but I think my husband had to stop me from licking the plate. Came out of town and found this great plant-based restaurant. Celebrated 88yr old birthday and they were nice enough to sing to her and even gave her a bday card! The food was also delicious everything had extraordinary flavors! Even the non-vegan people enjoyed them all. We literally had at least one of each plate they had...everything was great! read more

We celebrated Mother's Day here. The dim sum were not only beautiful, but delicious. The deserts were impossible to pass up. We sat in the patio where we enjoyed the beautiful day and live music. From the moment we walked in, co-owner Minty, greeted us with a smile, walked us through the menu, and gave us her expert tea recommendations. We ordered: - dumplings - cheddar rangoon - monkey bread - king oyster bao - a pot of tea (sorry - I don't remember what it was but it was lovely) The monkey bread was perfect - warm, fluffy and earthy - and was my favorite of the dishes. I did have an issue with two items, but the restaurant was so nice about correcting it by offering a credit for one of the items (I discovered the second issue after they resolved the first). Even with the two minor issues, the food was hands down some of the best vegan food I've ever had, let alone in LA. There's a lot of good vegan food here in LA, but this place is easily top 3. I came with my girlfriend and 2 friends on a Sunday night. Things started off a bit rocky when the hostess tried to seat us outside despite us having a reservation for inside. On its own, that wouldn't have been a huge deal. And it was offset by the fact that our waitress was absolutely wonderful, despite the fact it appeared she was a bit overewhelmed with tables. Some of the dishes were got were delicious. But two were WAY too salty. All four of us agreed. They were so salty that I stopped eating after a bite or two. And another dish was cloyingly sweet. I left very disappointed because the meal would have been delicious if not for those issues but they were so big that they pretty much ruined the meal. And my dining companions and I ended up spending half our meal just talking about the dish issues instead of enjoying the food. read more

My bf and I came for date night. We mistakenly entered the tea house instead of the main restaurant and the host needed to escort us around the corner to the courtyard for our reservation. Unfortunately they had to sub broccoli for the snap peas they normally have on the kung pao tofu. My bf doesn't eat broccoli so he had to pick around it. Also, confusingly, the "baby carrot" dish has no carrots - it is a black sesame dish formed into the shape of a carrot. Thankfully our server clarified this before we ordered. I don't care for black sesame so we didn't get that. We started with the smashed cucumber, which was a sizable portion. Then got the pan-fried dumplings, that had a nice pan crisp to them. The monkey buns were surprisingly filling, as was the kung pao tofu. By the time the curry cauliflower came, I had no more room. I did taste it though and it was surprisingly spicy (unlike the kung pao tofu that was very mild), but had good flavor. read more

What a fabulous, new, edition to Echo Park! Men & Beasts is a restaurant and tea lounge that serves up modern Chinese flavors with plant based ingredients. Having enjoyed my fair share of authentic dim sum in the past, I thought I might miss some of the more traditional flavors, but this new spot proved me wrong. We were greeted by the manager, Michelle, who was so lovely, welcoming, and quick to share more about the restaurant's unique ethos. The other servers throughout the night were incredibly kind as well. I loved the outdoor space. We were seated next to a waterfall, which was incredibly soothing. Since I was celebrating my birthday, we went a little nuts and ordered most of the menu despite there being only two of us. Did I stuff myself silly? Yes. Do I have any regrets? No. I started off with a kombucha, which was so special because it had notes of palo santo infused into it. Delicious! We also ordered the elote buns, king oyster baos, pan fried dumplings, monkey buns, baby carrot, black truffle fried rice, sweet and sour mushroom, and the ice cream. Everything was good, but the standouts of the evening were the sweet and sour mushroom, and the baby carrots. We were nearly stuffed when someone else ordered the sweet and sour mushroom and after seeing and smelling it across the patio, we knew we had to order it. Incredible texture; so crispy, you'd think you were eating chicken. Wonderful mix of sweet and savory. Now the "carrots" are made with black sesame and Michelle recommended we save them for dessert to have with ice cream. So glad we listened. The sesame was a beautiful complimentary flavor. And they were gooey on the inside and crisp on the outside. Melt in your mouth good. I can wait to come back for tea service and another meal. read more

First of all, the service that we received from Cleo was top-notch. Second, the vibe in the back and in the inside are both great. Delicious! We hade pretty much the entire menu because there were four of us and everything was better than the next. The pork dumplings to die for... the rice -- ahmazing .... Spinach yummy! Food was amazing but there were some technicalities. The seitan "pork" was very salty. If you have a low sodium diet, do not order it. The king oyster bao was OK but it needed a kick. Dumplings were very dry, they were OK. The noodles were the only highlight. On point and tasty. Overall it's a fair 4.0 due to taste, but overall everything was good. At the end my partner and I had the beignets and were amazing; maybe add sesame seeds to the beignets? Service was very fast and efficient. Our food was coursed out. We tried the King Oyster Bao, the Monkey Buns, Sweet & Sour Mushroom, Fried Rice and the Baby Carrot with Black sesame ice cream for dessert. Would recommend it all. My favorite was the Sweet & Sour Mushroom and my husband's favorite was the King Oyster Bao - but again, all were fantastic. Currently it is only outdoor seating and allows dogs. It was a cute setup. Extraordinary food with the price tag to match. They're doing something new that i've never seen in Chinese cuisines in a long time. Sort of their take on nu-chinese cuisine. Things to get here is definitely the reimagined char siu bao. They have basically fused the steam char siu bao with the hong kong baked bbq pork bun. They're able to make it crispy yet retain the dough and mouthfeel of a steamed char siu bao. The truffle fried rice was good as well. The chicken wings were decent but not memorable. Great food, great service, but also with a price tag to match. Good spot for that special date with the special someone. read more

Men & Beasts sounds like a rock band but is actually a vegan restaurant that goes harder than most steak houses. The vibe is dark, moody, and cooler than it needs to be. The seitan char siu is smoky and addictive, the vegan tenders could fool a chicken lover, and the sambal with Sichuan salt and pepper is spicy enough to make you sweat happily. This is vegan food that wants to fight you, in the best way. You could drag the most stubborn meat eater here and watch their world crumble after one bite. Got the dumplings (this time around got them steamed), cheddar rangoons, monkey buns, and sweet and sour mushrooms--all which I'd had before but are so amazing I had to get them again. Tried the Biang Biang noddles for the first time and got the chili oil on the side which was perfect as I got to adjust the level of spiciness. I missed the Elote Puff as it's fantastic but I get it as it's probably a seasonal item. Tried the Kabucha & Walnut ice cream and so good! I'm not a big fan of nuts in my ice cream but this works. Absolutely thrilled to discover this hidden gem in LA. It's been so tough to find vegan Chinese food but we just found a new favorite. I honestly can't rave enough about how nice the vibe was, how welcomed we felt, and how delicious the food was. 10/10 best experience ever. It was my husband's birthday but it was just the two of us, and they still made us both feel so special! After a really awful two years worth of birthdays since our daughter tragically and suddenly passed away, this is the first time my husband actually enjoyed his birthday, thanks to their kindness and hospitality.
