I have passed by Mermaids several times and noticed that it never seemed particularly busy. I thought maybe there is something missing from Mermaids since it is not more crowded. That could not be further from the truth! We had a great, very affordable meal here with exemplarly service. My family and I stumbled upon this place tonight after a spur of the moment trip to Cape May this evening. We sat on the outside patio and it was lovely with the cool breeze pushing through. I ordered the chicken shish kebab off the lunch menu, and it was a perfect portion for me as a bariatric patient. The chicken was a little crispy on the outside but moist on the inside and seasoned beautifully with a nice smoky touch. I like how it came with some pieces of fruit, although my 6 year old ripped them off my plate and devoured them. My husband got the chicken parm as he does just about everywhere we go. He said it was very good, although for the price, he wishes the portion was bigger. His exact words were "This was a tease" LOL. Came here for dinner and the beach view. We both ordered the broiled scallops thinking it would be maybe 3 or 4 scallops and it came with 7 each! I had hope for this place, however I was sad with our experience. There was no wait and now I know why, we were promptly seated and waters served, order taken. It went south from there. Our waters went empty and as the person that I assumed was our server, just kinda walked by, ignoring us. After 20 minutes I had gotten up to go ask for water And our food was being served, we asked that server for more water. Between 2 servers we were given more water and I needed utensils. No one ever came back to check on us. I got the shrimp Kabob, the sauce they served with it was pretty bad. And there was a "salad" of some sort that did not taste very good either. Disappointing. Sat on the outside back deck next to the old ladies morning workout class with music blaring. Servers were pleasant but not communicating and extremely untrained. Two servers asked us if we have been helped. We waiting over 25 min for our food. It was a Tuesday morning and not very busy at all. Once food came we were never check on and the bill was presented while eating by the host!!! Felt like we were being asked to leave. No server bothered asking about how the food was Food: Veggie omelette did have a wide variety of vegetables. Would not recommend u order a burger here. They were overcooked and not very tasty. We should have sent them back but we have friends that work in restaurants and have advised us to never send food back. Our server never asked us how our food was until after we finished eating. Let me preface by saying our visit happened during their season opening weekend, a year after Covid started. Much of the downtown area was still closed and non operational. This was one of the few restaurants open and according to the waitress they had been slammed that day. So when certain items on the menu weren't available and our food took over 30 minutes to arrive, we weren't to mad about it. The restaurant is on the beach so the view didn't suck. The food was AWESOME! I tried everything on everyone's plate: fish and chips, kids hot dog, kids burger, Greek salad. All of it was delicious. Went for breakfast. Small selection of options but it was all great! We arrived with a large 9 person group and they immediately worked to move tables to accommodate which was greatly appreciated. The patio seating doesn't have the best view, but being open to the sea breeze is extremely pleasant while enjoying breakfast, especially when the weather is perfect. We stopped into Mermaids spontaneously as it was right on the beach on Cape May NJ. July 2020 It was my birthday ..and this was the perfect place to pick..seating in the back screened in ..you could see the beach..very nice atmosphere. There was great social distancing and the staff all had their masks on. We had fish and chips and lobster bisque. The fish was lightly breaded moist and tender and the French fries were very good. The Lobster Bisque was very good..small shreds of lobster..very good. The staff were all friendly. Our waitress was great! I visited Mermaids on a weekend when it was not too crowded and there was no waiting line. I had noticed this restaurant before, but this was my first time dining there. We got a table quickly, near the back patio that had a view of the sand dunes and the beach. The restaurant was located in the center of the town, close to the convention hall. The atmosphere was not very typical of a seafood restaurant, but it had a coastal vibe. I chose the eggs benedict and my partner ordered the greek omelet. The food was slow to arrive and the service was average. We had two waitresses, one of whom was friendly and attentive, and the other one who was rude and neglectful. It seemed like they were playing good cop and bad cop, which I did not appreciate. I wondered if we had offended the rude waitress somehow, because she forgot to bring us water, coffee, straws, and the check. We had to wait for more than ten minutes for the check, and then we decided to ask the hostess for it. The younger staff members, such as the bussers, waiter, and hostess, were much more helpful than the rude waitress, who seemed to be nice to other customers. I understood that the restaurant might have been busy, but that did not excuse the poor attitude and service from that waitress. It was especially disappointing because my partner and I had driven for two hours from north Jersey to have breakfast there (around 9:30 am). The food was satisfactory, but the service from that waitress was unacceptable. read more

Convenient restaurant by the beach! Came here for lunch and menu selection was basic and simple, which is great for us and our kids. Price is decent. We were seated in the back patio which had a nice breeze and not too hot. Was not crowded when we went and was able to get a seat right away (table for 5). Our waitress was attentive and diligent but appeared to not look happy or being that service with a smile. Great place for kids! My kids would give it 5 stars because they love mermaids, like the kids menu, and had the opportunity to select a prize from the treasure chest which was great. The Mermaid Egg Wrap was piping hot, delicious, and enough for two of us to share. If we had tried this earlier in the week, we would have definitely considered ordering it again this trip. Location is very convenient but the first thing I noticed about this restaurant was that it was pretty empty, even for a weekend. Now I can see why it was basically empty compared to the other crowded restaurants in the area. Food was mediocre. The lobster bisque soup didn't have actual lobster in it, and three out of four friends thought that the ketchup tasted kinda funky. Service was kinda bad. After taking our order, the waitress kept forgetting to bring things (such as spoons and extra napkins) even when asked so my friend had to get up and ask for it. Also when our food came out, she almost spilled water on one friend and soup on another. She also forgot to bring a container for take out even when we asked her to bring one along with the check. I would skip this place. The restaurant is kind of dirty. Walking in you can see the kitchen is a bit grimy. I got the clam chowder and there were so many flour lumps in it. The waitress also seemed super hassled with two other servers just completely not caring and chit chatting off to the side.
