Nice service, beautiful place, parking is easy too with street parking and a municipal lot on the same block. Portion was generous as well. We had the Spice menu, the paella is enough to feed two, and besides the appetizers the waiter brought us salad as well. The appetizers are all winners. I could't decide among the salmon sashimi, coco-nuts roll and scallop, but after tasting all three, I think I will be satisfied with any choice. That said, the scallop is the one I'd order next time. Maybe I know what really good, fresh seafood is, but the only thing keeping this restaurant from being perfect is that, its seafood is less than perfect. It lacks the freshness and flavor of quality seafood, and the paella rice is too soft, too overdone. However, in a city that, despite its proximity to the ocean, offers mostly frozen stuff from elsewhere, this is sadly the norm. The usual delicious house salad they used to serve pre-dinner is gone. MENU: Changed and reduced. The delicious dishes of yesteryear that made us come back over and over are all gone. Ordered the Salmon... they showed up with a 'lonely', skinny slice of it. Nothing like before.Price still the same, of course. Taste ok. I am fair in the assessment of all my reviews. Service was not the greatest. We made reservations sat down and was brought bread but no water. The waitress came took our meals but did not take our beverage. We had to ask three times for water. Our meals came and half of us were missing utensils and napkins. The portions were extremely small for the price that we paid. We ate paid the bill and headed to Morton's steakhouse because we were still so hungry (which should have been our first choice). This place is one of the best place to eat in the Gables. The food is amazing. The fish is the house special and boy it will hit every taste point. The food here is worth every penny. The service is also outstanding and the ambiance is great while on a date or just getting out for an evening. There is a reason why I have returned so many times. Came here to celebrate my mothers birthday and it was an enjoyable meal. The staff was very friendly and the food tasted great. To start we all ordered some drinks and I had the waitress pick out a drink from their menu. She ordered me a passion fruit flavored drink and it was phenomenal. Needless to say, as soon as others in the table saw it, they had to order themselves one! To start we ordered the fish croquettes, chicken "Venezuelan" pinchos, and the lobster bisque. The fish croquettes came with provolone layed over a bed of cheddar fondue infused with yuzu and red onion garnish. My mom said it was absoltely delicious. The chicken pinchos were served with fingerling potatoes brushed and seasoned with garlic sauce, chimichurri and cilantro sauce, DELISH. Now for the main coures, there were two ordered of the fresh caught snapper, one we ordered fried whole the other fried, but already filet. Two of us ordered the carbonara with a side of filet mignon, and lastly, the Chilean seabass. I cannot tell you how good that fried snapper was. It was absolutely delicious. We could not get enough of it. The chilean seabass was also a hit and my brother devoured it instanly. As for the carbonara, it was also really good. We were expecting them to possibly lack in the pasta department since it is mostly a seafood restaurant, but NO. The filet was also perfectly cooked which made us really happy. For dessert although we were full, the waitress came over with chocolate mouse so that we can properly since happy birthday to my mother. Was recommended Mesa Mar by our concierge at The Biltmore. We were celebrating our birthdays and our concierge shared that when making the reservation. We were seated directly and had a nice patio spot. The food was average. We ordered the rock shrimp starter, nothing noteworthy but rarher the sort of starter you might get at a chain. I ordered the branzino which indicated it came with mushroom sauce, it was overcooked and the cremini mushrooms came on the side. The mashed potatos looked like they had sat for awhile. All in all not a great meal, did not stay for dessert, no mention of the birthdays. It was just an average but overpriced meal. read more

I'm not, nor have I ever been, a seafood person by any means whatsoever. Now having said that, allow me to give my highest recommendation to a seafood restaurant: Mesamar. Located close to Miracle Mile and on Giralda, Mesamar is part of the higher echelon of fine dining establishments in downtown Coral Gables. Serving only the finest in cuisine and cocktails. Parking may be the only challenge you will encounter during your visit as you only have a small paid lot nearby as well as surrounding street parking. I believe there is also parking in the building across the street, but I have never used it. This was my first visit to the restaurant, and I went with my family to celebrate my parents' anniversary. The restaurant has a vibrant and vivacious atmosphere. Some walls of the restaurant are lined with bookshelves while the others have contemporary art. We were seated immediately as we had made a reservation, which I highly recommend doing so as the restaurant was extremely packed on a Wednesday night. Our waiter was very attentive and answered all of our questions, even though he was attending many other tables. Rather than ordering from the standard menu, we decided to try the Miami Spice menu since we heard about great it is. For appetizer, I ordered the rock shrimp, which is lightly-fried shrimp with mushrooms and ponzu in a creamy sauce. I'll go ahead and say that this was probably my favorite course that I had that evening. I absolutely love Japanese-style dishes and this was done perfectly. The shrimp was so fresh and the batter used had such unique spices that complements the mushrooms, ponzu, and creamy sauce. The included greens also adds some texture to the dish. The dish comes with enough for one person, but it was so good that I wanted more. This appetizer is an absolute must-try. I had also tried the scallops and they were so also fantastic. Not as delicious as the rock shrimp, but still great. However, it only brings two scallops per serving. Mesamar's Spice menu is unique in the sense that after the appetizer, they bring you a cesar salad. It's a good salad, but it will not knock your socks off. My main course was the 12 oz New York strip and for my side, I chose the mashed potatoes (each entrée comes with one side of your choice). The steak was cooked perfectly (medium) and had a high-quality taste. It's not as soft as a filet mignon, but it still is a smooth and buttery steak. The included chimichurri adds a tangy taste to the meat. I also tasted the lobster ravioli and it was exquisite. You can definitely tell they use fresh lobster and hand-made the pasta. It may seem like the dish does not have much. But trust me, it does. The plate is misleading in that it is a deeper dish. I wish I had ordered the lobster ravioli instead, but I do not regret ordering the New York strip. I sampled both the almond praline and chocolate mousse and have determined that you cannot go wrong with either one. The almond praline is like a tiramisu but with a crispy almond surface. It's not too sweet and I think it narrowly edges out the mousse. The chocolate mousse is just your typical mousse, but with a rich chocolate flavor. My only gripe is that since it's served in a shot-glass, it does not bring too much. The almond praline definitely brings more and feels more filling. We also ordered the French Brownie since you got a complimentary dessert with your Yelp check-in. The French Brownie was rich and decadent and is served with vanilla ice cream. This dessert was also amazing. If you do check-in to get a free dessert, this is absolute the best choice since it brings a good amount and it is also their most-expensive dessert. Overall, Mesamar was a fantastic experience. The food was bursting with flavor and the service was excellent. If you're ever craving high-quality seafood, this is the place to go to and treat yourself. It's perfect for any occasion in a trendy and vibrant atmosphere. read more

We made a reservation for 6:00 pm on NYE for a party of 5 (one was my son in a high chair). I made the reservation for the main dining room. When I called for the reservation I was also told that I could order from the menu. When we arrived there were only 2 other families there. Despite this, they sat us in the second dining room in the back by the bar with barely any space for my son's high chair. I asked if we could be seated in the main dining room (I also requested this when they called to confirm the day before) but was told that they could not seat us there because there were too many reservations. I guess not all reservations are the same. Then our waitress was indifferent and borderline rude. The food was mediocre. We left around 8:00 pm. They main dinning room had less than 1/3 of its tables being used. We frequent places in the gables but: Never again. read more

MesaMar has a beautiful build out, excellent staff and great food. We went for lunch and sat in the room with bookshelves all around. We really appreciated the atmosphere in the room. The salmon appetizer was fantastic - tasty thinly cut pieces of salmon. I wasn't the biggest fan of the cod croquettes, as I thought the cheese overpowered the fish. The kale salad was on the wrong plate so it looked like a mound of kale and all the dressing and toppings fell to the very small lower portion of the bowl. I found myself having to dig for toppings on my salad. My husband's fish was excellent, though, so I learned my lesson ordering salad at a fish restaurant. This place was terrible . All the dishes are incredibly small, meant to be fancy but only managed to be over seasoned and not very tasty. I had the fish taco appetizer. The taco shell was crispy (good) but if the insides had fish in it, I couldn't taste it for all of the other contents. There were only two and they were really really small. I got the fish croquettes for dinner, and I feel like they should apologize to to the fish for completely wasting its sacrifice. They tasted like fish paste and came with honest-to-god Cheeze Whiz as a seasoning. There were four. The kale salad was drenched in a bitter and astringent vinegret which paired poorly with kale. All in all, you will have a much better culinary experience if you light $70 on fire and get a fish sandwich from McDonald's. read more

You can sit inside as well but the street is quite nicely lit up with other businesses just down the way - it was perfect for us. Lychee Martinis were great...3xrounds kind of great and service was good. Although the servers didn't really give us suggestions when we prompted - they were very good and attentive. Perhaps they simply didn't was to impose their suggestions on us. I had the Tuna Tacos - so delicious. The boy had lobster tacos - also delicious. They are very small and there seemed to be the recurring element of Thai sweet chilli sauce in both taco variations but we didn't mind. Could have been the 3 martinis. We decided to share the seafood paella and this was a great choice for us. The menu says paella for 1 but y'all...it was enough for two. Super flavorful and just a really good paella. Both very good with the octopus tender and good grilled flavor. I had the Padillado fish and seafood platter that had so much fresh grouper, scallops, mussels, clams, calamari, prawns, small lobster tail,etc. for my main. We also tried the signature Hog Snapper that has such a striking presentation with the fish upright on the plate. I had been eyeing MesaMar for some time and decided to visit it last night. As I drove up there was a group of ladies--and I use that term generously--smoking cigars as a cabal of Fidel impersonators. I almost aborted getting off as my internal cerebral dashboard began flashing: Danger Will Robins, Danger. Nonetheless I said to myself get out of your bubble. We proceeded to go to the hostess station where we had reservations. We were asked to wait at the bar which consists of 4 chairs four feet behind the hostess station and hammered by servers getting drinks. After a long awkward wait the bartender got our order. After about another 5 minutes we were taken to our table sans the drinks we had ordered. We were sat down and given a bread basket. The butter was commercial breakstones and not home whipped. The bread was possibly frozen and heated. Nothing special here. I then opened the menu. For the first time I saw "rice and beans" with seafood. Now I am not being difficult but I am going to a seafood restaurant when I saw that, coupled with the glacial service, mediocre drinks, I decided to abort. I wasn't going to pluck down 180 for Cuban food; no way. I paid cash for the drinks and tip and decided to walk over to Zucca; our second choice of the night. It's my go-to for special occasions when I feel like seafood in the Gables. The whole fish prepared two ways is a treat and worth the price. I can't resist their yuca sticks as a side. It's a real Miami crowd both in good and bad ways...when you go, you'll know what I mean. I wish they had a bar where you could just pop in and have seafood-based light bites with wine. She isn't inviting and didn't communicate with us. She Expected us to know we was supposed to follow her to a table. We really weren't sure what to order, so our server made suggestions and we put it in his hands. He brought us out the right amount of food consisting of a massive Tomahawk steak hanging by the bone, a couple fish dishes, salad's for everyone at the table, and appetizers to start us off. Everything was delish! The croquetta appetizers flew as soon as they were set down so we ordered more. The Tomahawk was a total crowd pleaser hanging from a hook. A little more undercooked than some of us would have liked but those at the table who don't mind hearing their cow moo really enjoyed it. I was a huge fan of the hog fish that was served with both fried and grilled portions all on one plate yet somehow presented beautifully. I love it when restaurants still collect servers to bring a dessert to a table saying happy birthday. Not only did several of the staff come in with a cake and candle seeking for our odd, but they also came with find a hat and a pops making for quite a fun show. The restaurant itself is beautiful. In case you don't know, which most of you do because we are in Miami, Mesa Mar translates to see table and the Decore definitely captured that ocean like elements. Kept coming across this place and opted to go for dinner. As I walked into the main entrance we were hit with a slight fishy smell that we did consider unpleasant but after all it is a seafood restaurant so it didn't raise any alarms. Opted to sit outside. Ordered the Rock shrimp and shrimp ceviche appetizer. It was decent but nothing spectacular. Also enjoyed one of the best caesar salads Ive ever had. Our mains were the catch of the day (hogfish) two ways and the linguini Del Mar. The fried portion of the fish was over cooked however the grilled section was prepared well. Could have used some seasoning. The pasta was ok, flavors were nothing to brag about it but was cooked good. Our strawberry pavlova and almond praline desserts were delicious. In my opinion, for the prices you'd be paying, much more is expected. For one I thought the menu was limited. Also the food lacked creativity and taste. I'd say we could have gotten the same meals at other casual restaurants in town and paid a fraction of the price. Spending NYE at Mesamar was a wonderful idea so I decided to come back for Mother's Day to enjoy some delectable seafood eats. My thoughts? Twice is just as nice at Mesamar! They have consistent flavor, service and ambiance. Firstly, their wine choices are undeniable. Their albarinos are perfect for a seafood pairing and my go to! We started with the ceviche, which was divine! I definitely recommend it as an appetizer. Having tried a few dishes, I definitely recommend going with the fish or pasta. While I liked the flavors of the steak, I thought the cut could be softer but hey, who orders meat at a seafood restaurant? My opinion: stick with their seafood options and you won't go wrong.
