Made a reservation here at 7PM on a Sunday. There are two sections of seating in this restaurant, and we were the only family on our side with 3 or 4 families being on the other. After being seated, it took almost twenty minutes for a server to acknowledge us being there, and to bring water for the table. After waiting so long for the server, we immediately ordered, and our food seemed to come out rather quickly. I ordered the Chilean Sea Bass, and the meal didn't seem to hit the spot for me. As one of the more expensive meals on the menu, the fish portion was maybe 4-5 ounces, and you are given a choice of one side; my choice was mashed potatoes. The sea bass was good. It was moist and buttery, but it wasn't spiced right and the portion was disappointing. I did not care for the whipped mashed potatoes. They also tasted bland, there wasn't any taste of butter to me, and I could have went without. My wife ordered the Parillada de Mar, I tried a little of each food portion she was given, and I wished I had ordered her meal. This review is not about my wife's meal, I'm speaking to what I ordered, but I would order the Parillada de Mar if I ever go back here. The service improved as the meal went on, the restaurant has a great ambiance, and I would try this restaurant again if I'm back in the area. Not sure if my meal was off or not, but I definitely ordered the wrong plate based on what others at the table had. read more

Had dinner at Mesa Mar while my boyfriend was in town. He wanted to go to a seafood-centric restaurant & since this was in walking distance, we headed over. It was early so we were seated immediately and promptly ordered cocktails. For appetizer, we chose the Scallops (Grilled with our homemade pear cream sauce and truffle oil). Beautiful presentation & sooooo unbelievably delicious! Perfectly cooked & that silky sauce was fantastic. We sopped it up with warm rolls. Next was the Tuna Tartar (Cilantro, chopped onions, sesame oil, chili garlic, miso, avocado and our homemade spice sauce), also fantastic. Super fresh, amazing cut of fish & the flavours were perfect. Such an incredible way to start the meal we were so excited for our mains! He chose the Whole Fish of the Day 2 Ways (Grilled & Fried) & I had the Sweet Miso Black Cod (Oven baked and marinated in our homemade sweet miso sauce). Sadly, neither one was very good which was totally surprising. We were not impressed. His fish tasted overly fishy & my cod was gummy, wet & the flavour was bland. Been trying the check out this restaurants for a couple of month and while looking through this weeks Miami Spice event MesaMar Seafood was on the top of list. Making reservation via Yelp site was easy and upon fist arrival was surprised how nicely decorated and clean they keep this restaurant. They have a full bar with two great bartenders that create these delicious martinis and Mojito s. Did I also mention that they carry a large inventory of very good wines? Menu had a great variety to keep everyone happy and the Miami Spice options for the day. I ordered the scallop appetizer and paella main coarse and couldn't be happier about my delicious selection This place can be pricy, but well worth the cost. MesaMar kicked off Miami Spice season for me and I could not be happier with my choice! MesaMar is an upscale restaurant located in the quaint Coral Gables area serving up the freshest seafood in town. Not even joking they had the fish all lined up in a large tray full of ice and ready to be cooked to your liking! The Miami Spice at MesaMar was a great bang for your buck. At $39 you get a four course meal! For appetizer I ordered the scallops. They were so smooth and melted in your mouth! This appetizer brings just two scallops, so if you're really hungry I recommend ordering the rock shrimp which is just as delicious and brings more food! The rock shrimp was crispy on the outside but smooth on the inside and had that perfect creamy Asian style sauce coating it. In between your first appetizer and entree is a caesar salad which was good! For my entree I ordered the lobster ravioli. The dish may look small, but it is an optical illusion because there are lots of ravioli stacked in the center of the plate! The lobster was so fresh and had great texture. The ravioli was also cooked perfectly al-dente. All entrees also come with a side order of brown rice, white rice and black beans, mashed potatoes, or vegetables. For dessert I ordered the chocolate mousse which was amazing! It has a great cocoa flavor and was not overly sweet. The most important part though was that it was a cream dream! So smooth! I highly recommend MesaMar whether you're doing a Miami Spice or not. They serve up great food in a wonderful atmosphere with genuine service. Was told about this spot by my parents friends who have dined here before. Made reservations but the restaurant was pretty available considering it was a Thursday night. Lovely decor & presentation throughout, definitely felt the class in this place, dress up! I wore a cocktail dress, cotton. My mom wore a jumpsuit & my dad & brother wore button downs & either linen or dress pants. The wine was excellent we got Napa valley white I forgot the name, my dad picked it. $70 per bottle & worth it. The food was pretty tasty but I give this place 4 stars because I'm a bit of a seafood snob, I think the menu could be a bit more inclusive of just seafood items and not seafood with pasta or other things. I'm more of a pure seafood plates with no sides, just quality: less is more in this department for me. Prices were a bit high, $$$$ but I give it that it's fine dining & the presentation on some of the plates coming by me were quite lovely. I can't say I won't go back but I wouldn't specifically plan to myself. Overall, we had a nice time & the service was quite excellent start to finish. Yelp got me a free dessert, which our amazing waitress upgraded for me for my birthday! The serving staff was attentive & although quiet & respectful, willing to share their recommendations when asked. Because if that, we ordered the branzino (absolutely fabulous) instead of the paella; along with rice & black beans (excellent!). We started with the rock shrimp (the perfect amount of spice) and the salmon sashimi, both were excellent! For entrees, we had the catch of the day, which was the entire fish (half fried, half grilled), with yellow rice, very tasty. An excellent choice! I came here last night by myself while traveling for work and grabbed a seat at the bar. The bartender (and possibly the owner?) were extremely nice and helpful with the menu, giving suggestions, insights on the food, and even brought me a whole fish for me to see and decide if I wanted it. I started with an incredible cocktail worth every penny of $14. I sipped it slowly as I was traveling alone and it never got watered down, and the flavor was perfect. I ended up getting the fish of the day, jasmine rice, black beans, and the house salad that came with it. The fish was fileted (by my choice) and grilled, served on either side of the fish bones along with lemon that complimented the well seasoned fish beside it. The jasmine rice was very unique...fluffy with green onions and raisins...weird, I know. But also delicious. I would have eaten everything on the menu, but unfortunately could only try one dish. Between the environment, the food, and the amazing cocktails, I'd love to live closer and throw my whole paycheck at this place. read more

The Cuban seafood restaurant never disappoints with a nice array of seafood dishes prepared in traditional Cuban form. My favorite was their special white rice with golden raisins taking front stage. The Seafood Parrillada for two is a great value with quality fresh seafood; a feast of flavor. We asked for additional sides of House Jasmine Rice (a house specialty) and crispy Tostones. I came here for the Miami Spice menu with my friend and I'm so happy I did. I absolutely loved this place from beginning to end. The restaurant is located on Giralda but on the next street after the umbrellas. The decoration and ambience is wonderful! It's decorated mainly in white, white sheer curtains, white table clothes, silver utensils, and simple/minimum decoration. The restaurant is small but not uncomfortably small. They have more than 1 restroom for the ladies, which is a plus since many of the Gables restaurants have one restroom for ladies and one restroom for men. The personnel is very friendly; they greet you as soon as you come in and got seated immediately. The staff is very helpful with the menu by describing the various options. My friend and I shared the coco-nuts roll (tuna, caramelized cashews, shredded coconut and capper) and rock shrimp (with mushroom, ponzu sauce in their homemade mild sauce). Both appetizers were good, but I absolutely loved the rock shrimp! It's a must try! As entrée we both decided on the paella which the waiter agreed it was the best option on the Miami spice menu and boy was he right! The paella was very tasteful; I ended up eating the whole thing because it was too good to stop, but I should've saved half like my friend did. The paella included shrimp, lobster, clams, calamari, mussels, fish, scallops, and green peas cooked in yellow rice. My mouth gets watery typing about it lol! Now for dessert the waiter encouraged us to get the almond praline...I thought my night couldn't get better with all the delicious food I already had, but WOW was the dessert the icing on the cake! The paella is on point. It is delicious, one of the best I ever had. The lobster tacos, which I forgot to photograph, are so tiny, it is an insult. I mean, each one is like 1.5 ounces or something. There was hardly any lobster in it. Also, our server was more interested in his other table, a party of 8. I always say, bad service can ruin an experience, but a bad server can do the same deed. It is a shame, because I really love the paella. I just like to receive good service, even if my table is a table of 2, not a table of 8.
