Mixed bag. Salad was ok - tomatoes, onion, feta, spinach. The balsamic vinaigrette had truffle oil in it. I'm a big fan of truffle oil, but it didn't go well with the salad. I liked the seafood parrillada. The fish was delicious. Lobster tail a little dry. Wife liked her seafood stew. Was a bit salty, but very good flavor. I had food envy when I saw others with the whole fried hogfish. The side of vegetable was a bit pathetic: two pieces of asparagus with some white mushrooms thrown haphazardly on a saucer. I really wanted to this place to be good. It was my 2nd attempt to eat here. The first time was lunch about a year ago. The salad and the service was just okay. This time however was absolutely terrible. I took myself out for a Friday lunch. I'm one of maybe 4 people in the place but it took forever for my server to come out. They couldn't answer the simplest questions about the menu, didn't care to try and had a terrible attitude. After I ordered, the awning released about a gallon of water and drenched me. I get that stuff like that can happen, but after walking in to let them know what happened, they said, oh, you wanna sit at a different table? I sat at a different wet table, had to wipe the water off myself. The croquettes came out cold and taste terrible. I waited for 10 minutes to tell someone about it but no one ever came back out. The pear pasta was AMAZING but the portion was so tiny that my fiancée ordered a second entree! I ordered the ceviche- it was good, but didn't taste very fresh (I have high standards for ceviche; I usually eat it straight after a fishing trip)! The chocolate mousse was spectacular. I highly recommend the main catch of the day (half grilled and half fried) If you are planning on sharing, be ware the price increases to $52. Our waiter didn't advise us so when we saw the bill we were confused since the menu said $30. However, it was really good and worth it. You definitely have to try the almond praline. What a great culinary experience. I would give this place more like 4.5 starts but obviously, that option does not exist. I went for dinner with a group of people so we ordered food for the middle of the table. Appetizers we're fish croquet, shrimp tempura (which was more like bang bang shrimp from bonefish), yucca, tuna tartar, octopus salad with capers and lobster. We had Caeser salad and arugula salad for mid course and then for entree a hog fish half fried half grilled, tostones, rice and beans and pallea. We finished of with flan and perline. The food was wonderful!!! The croquettes were fresh and hot with a good ratio of fish to cheese. Probably, the best I've ever had. The octopus salad came with capers, black olives, sweet bell peppers and a side of potatoes, so soft, tender and delicious. The tuna tartar was also fantastic. The lobster came with mushrooms and was so soft and delicious. I ate the arugula salad that came with truffle oil, balsamic vinaigrette, pecans and cheese, quite delicious. I've had better yucca. The entree, was beautiful and extremely good. Pallea came fresh with seafood cooked to perfection (no sausage in this one) and the rice was delicious. I loved the hog fish. What an awesome idea to cook it in both ways. The tostones were not exciting. The black beans were some of the best I've ever had. Both desserts were magnificent! The service was pretty good as well. I hate to say it but this place was not good. I went for a double date on a Friday night at 730pm. The service took forever! The appetizers were awful- salmon sashimi was hot and already cooked with this strange butter like clump over it. The rock shrimp, which they're supposed to be known for, was soggy and sitting on top of a pile of whipped greens. I ordered the lobster and mushroom- lobster was way over cooked and the "sauce" was melted butter on a side dish. I ordered white rice with it and it came after I was done eating, hard and cold. Heard great things about this place and decided to get out of Brickell's gastronomic options to adventure into Coral Gables Restaurant's week. Service was top notch from beginning to end. I went with the CGRW menu and enjoyed the lobster tacos as an appetizer. For entree I got the catch of the day with veggies. A side of Cesar Salad is included with most entrees. The lobster tacos are surprisingly small but definitely delicious and with enough meat to open your appetite. Had dinner there last night. Service was impeccable. Unfortunately the food was not. Neither was the restaurant. The bathrooms were dirty and stunk, as did the restaurant. By the time we left there was a disgusting bathroom and chemical smell. I didn't eat anything because the food was just horrible. The cesar salad? Dry, barely any dressing. The salmon carpaccio? Seasoned with fake lemon. Seriously. How can you "f" up carpaccio? Apparently you can. They certainly did. When my fish arrived it had a fish skeleton that was supposed to be ornamental and standing up on the plate, falling over on the side and the server proceeded to pluck it off the plate. I wonder how many plates that skeleton has been on? Oh, and the place stunk. Did I already say that? Really horrible. And to top it off, it was really expensive for such bad food. The food is even better! We tried the coconut-nuts-roll it was amazing, extremely fresh and tasty. I went because of Miami Spice, the name of this place caught my attention because I am a seafood and fish lover. I enjoyed a full course meal for only $39 thanks to this summer promotion. The scallops I had for appetizer were soft and rich in flavor. The catch of the day was delicious! I honestly forgot what fish it was but I loved it. I came on Mother's Day and perhaps is not the best day to come because they were real busy and the menu was not the regular one (that was disappointing). Be ready to be surprised with the presentation of the food. It is very cool. However, I gave it a four this time since I ordered paella and did not feel it was made in the Spanish traditional way. It was not excellent but fair. Also, felt the flan was excellent, so fresh and priced at $4, but the brownie was too expensive at $12 and tasted like it was bought at the supermarket freezer. This place is a gem in coral gables, service, drinks and food are extraordinary. We started with a mixed ceviche with passion fruit that was super fresh and delicious. I ordered a Parrillada de Mar, with lobster, shrimp, squid, oysters, mussels and fish with chimichurri, just perfect. Wife ordered the catch of the day, snapper in grilled fillet with a side of vegetables. All entres come with a small ceasar salad. The food is amazing! We tried grilled octopus and Cazuela de Mariscos. Both were delicious! Especially we loved the octopus, strongly recommend! For desert we tried the chocolate muse which is just as any other chocolate muse, pretty good. The cocktails though were a disappointment. We had two different ones and both just tasted as a mix of pure alcohol. That's part of the reasons for 4 our 5. The other reason is that when we walked in there was a very strong unpleasant smell of cleaning products that was definitely covering an even more unpleasant smell of someone getting sick. Let me start this review off at the end by saying the entire experience was amazing. From the second we walked into the restaurant we were greeted with sincerity and made to feel welcomed and special, despite the dining area being full with other patrons. Our decision to visit this restaurant was based on my sons view of the langoustine appetizer he found during an internet search. Which was amazingly delicious. The decor is chic yet comfortable and welcoming. From the silver plated fish on the walls, the beautiful array of books lined ion shelves, to the comfortable seating. But the most impressive, the attractive display of fresh hog snapper that is seen as soon as you enter. We knew immediately this was going to be the best lunch ever. Throughout the entire meal experience our waiter, Luis, was attentive, courteous, and friendly. I can not say enough about this man who knew his menu. He took time to explain what each item was as well as giving recommendations based on his knowledge of the menu and preparation but he took the time to learn his audience. Ryan, who also took care of our table, was attentive and courteous through out our time. And we spent a long time here!! My son, who's birthday we were celebrating, is a Florida born man who's has grown up fishing in the Florida waters. He knows his seafood. Luis was quick to learn this and appreciate his knowledge. We started off with Mojitos, which were truly the very best any of have tried. We moved in to Star of the Sea martinis. Wow! Amazing, unique flavor. Our meal was fabulous. We had appetizers, soups, and main dishes of the freshest most perfectly prepared seafood. Hats off to the chef. And speaking of hats...all of the wait staff came to the table singing happy birthday with a special birthday hat for the birthday boy. If I could give more stars I would. This is easily one of my favorite dinner places in Coral Gables. When I am fortunate enough to be in town for work, MesaMar is high on the list of places to go. MesaMar provides a unique blend of Asian and Latin food, mixing the best of both worlds. The food is fresh, unique and flavorful. The past few times I have dined here, I ordered the catch of the day (typically hogfish) and they prepare it beautifully, splitting it between grilled and fried. The fish is so fresh and flaky, seasoned perfectly. If you go with the fish, please order a side of plantains - they are a must! As far as appetizers, if octopus is on the menu (and you like it) please order it. The octopus is fresh, salty and prepared exquisitely. The sashimi has also always been fresh and flavorful. The restaurant ambiance is kind of quirky. The decor is a fun mix of beach, Latin and asian fusion and the music upbeat. They display the fresh seafood and you can choose your "catch of the day" which is always fun. Finally the service - our servers have always been lovely and take very good care of us. They are attentive and ensure drinks are always full, extra plates are always provided and that everything is prepared to your liking. The experience of eating at MesaMar is something not to be missed. As soon as I walked in I was captivated by the soft nautical decor of whites and aquas, I knew I was in for a treat! We were waiting for friends so we sat at the bar and ordered a house Pinot Noir which was delicious! As our friends came they sat us at a lovely table and then the deliciousness began. For our appetizer we ordered lobster tacos and ceviche! Both absolutely scrumptious. Our meal consisted of a whole hogfish, fried rice and tostones. That hogfish was light, meaty and moist... it was soooo good!! All three dishes I highly recommend! For dessert we ordered a strawberry pavlova and a praline dessert which were rich, tasty and delicious! The owner, Fifi, came by our table to say hi and make sure everything was up to par, she made the rounds to all tables. She told us they're introducing a cylindrical roll and offered us a taste and suggested we order lychee martinis to go with the roll. We ordered lychee martini shots and I'm still dreaming about both- the martini and the roll. Our table of 8 took quite a bit of time and we never felt rushed and the service was spectacular!
