We were in the mood for comfort food and definitely found it here. I had the meatloaf with mashed potatoes. The atmosphere was normal for a local diner, people taking and the employees hustling and bustling. The waitress was nice and was spot on with the drinks and food. My drink was never empty. You don't see a lot of place mats with ads anymore. I will definitely come back to this place especially if we relocate to the Jacksonville beach area. read more

I ordered the Monte Christo sandwich because it had been a long time since I had even seen one on a menu, and an even longer time since I had gotten one that was prepared correctly. The Metro Diner Monte Christo sandwich was the best I had ever eaten in my life. It consisted of a ham and turkey on sourdough bread, plus both Swiss and chedder cheese, with the whole sandwich dipped in batter and flash fried to a golden brown crispy delight. Then it is dusted lightly with powdered sugar and served piping hot with delicious raspberry preserves. Be warned: it is an enormous meal, not for dainty eaters. Most people cannot finish a half Monte Christo, but I ate the whole darn thing. I hope my photo of the sandwich gets posted with this review. By the way, the service at Metro was excellent even though we were late for lunch, only about 45 minutes until closing. I can't wait to go back. My wife and I had planned on visiting a white table restaurant I'm so glad that we made the change. In doing so we saved money and time plus got a great filling meal in return. Awesome Brunch close to the beach! I was here Memorial Day weekend ion Sunday. It was packed! Eventhough there was a wait, they handled it very efficiently. It well worth the wait! The menu looked delish!!! I went the huevos rancheros and they were awesome! It was like having nachos with eggs, jalepenos, melted cheddar, corn, salsa, beans on top of these huge tortilla looking chips that were sturdy enough to hold the load of goodness! Metro Diner is a decent enough spot but they miss too many easy things to make it truly memorable. Hands down the best thing on the menu is the fried chicken- I always request all white meat because Trump. Wait. No, I just like breasts. Because Trump. God dammit. Mashed potatoes are bland, veggies are bland. Toughest baguette of my life. Crab cakes are fishy and clumsy- steak is tough, lox is fishy- just a lot of missed cues. Feels like they know they are popular and just cut a few too many corners in regards to execution and flavor. But the chicken is good. And it's BYOB mimosas. But for $15 for two breasts and some lackluster sides you can do a lot better. Hangar Bay has much tastier chicken imho. read more

Ok, so I won't be too harsh because it is simply a diner, but here goes. I wasn't really in a rush, I just eat quick and I don't like to wait. Being as I was by myself I sat at the counter which was right next to the expo window. I was greeted quickly by the waitress whom I'm sure is a lovely person, she was just way to close to me while taking my order. As in every time she came to take my order she was way to close, made me a little uncomfortable. Other then that she was quick and prompted. I ordered their San Fran Benedict. All it is is an avocado added, which to my surprise was a half avocado to each side. Very rare you get that much. With the meal I got a side of cheese grits and an orange juice. Let's start with the good, the eggs. Poached eggs get messed up so much, yet they were perfectly cooked. I was happy there. Also the aforementioned avocado was also a plus and that's about it. The Hollandaise sauce was horrible. It was very thin and breaking apart. No time was taken in making this and I tasted zero citrus. You can tell they over did it with the butter. It was almost becoming translucent. Now being that this dish is smothered in this sauce, you can see why I was so disappointed in the meal. In terms of the grits, they were really bad. Zero flavor with just some cheese melted on top. But then again, it's a diner so maybe I shouldn't expect much? I would have given it a one if it wasn't for the this fact tho. Maybe I'll go back when I want a quick meal. Beach diner on Atlantic is better to me though. read more

If quantity is your thing, then this is the place. But if quality is important, then I would skip over this place. The problem w/ this type of food, it is so 1980's/1990's before the globalization of travel kicked into gear where many of us travelers got exposed to the various flavors around the world and its wide use of herbs/flavoring techniques. When food is served w/ little regards to proper seasoning, relying on heavy use of butter, salt or pepper, it is just plain boring and unappetizing to a well traveled palate. Favorite area breakfast joint in the area by far. I've been to 3 local metro diners and this location rules. 2nd would be PVB. Cream chip beef on toast over sourdough. Love it. Crab-Benedict, my wife swears by it. My father loves the pork-chop specials. My son loves the basic eggs and hash. Love all the specials. Have consistently had very good service. Go eat here! I can't stop about this place! I took my family here for brunch while visiting Jax Beach. It was only 1 block over from the Fairfield Inn and Courtyard Inn which was where we were staying. We walked in and put our name in. There was a wait, but after watching all of the plates of food that the servers were carrying, and watching the kitchen prepare food orders, it was very clear to me that it was worth the wait! We really didn't have to wait long, the hostess was very friendly, and our server came to get our drink order in a timely manner. It was so hard to decide what to order! I wish I was a local so I could try all the things I wanted! Their Chicken and Waffles was very popular, and their pancakes, plates, omelettes, and biscuits and gravy were too. Everything about this place is amazing. We were visiting from Los Angeles this past weekend and I can honestly say the best chicken and waffles, biscuits And gravy I have ever had. I really did not expect Metro Diner to be this good! I thought, diners are diners are diners. Noooope. Luckily for my friend and me, we arrived just before the Sunday morning rush, and were seated at the bar. Even though we did beat the rush, seemed like those were the only seats available. By the time we got out, place was packed with people waiting! Well worth the wait, though, I'd say. I ordered one of the specials: banana foster's french toast. Oh my, so so good! Large portions, so I got to box some for later. I was very happy to hear that they ask if I'd like my hashbrowns crispy or not. I love them crispy! Service was great, even with how busy it was. Our waitress was friendly, and even the cooks in the back made a quick convo with us as we sat and watched them. It's like organized chaos back there. I overheard one of the guys make proud comments on his dishes as he sent them out. Now that's someone who loves what he does. I guess that's a good way to sum up the experience here: people love serving you, so both the food and service come out great! read more

I'm not fond of the wait every time I come but the food and service have always been good. Arrived Sunday after walking on the beach so we worked up an appetite. Checked in with the hostess and looks like 5-6 groups ahead of us. Grab a seat on the front porch and score a cup of coffee or water while you're waiting from the self serve table. Once we were seated, our delightful waitress took our drink order and directed us to the mega chalkboard to see the days specials. Wifey went with the "Yo Halla" french toast and I really changed my normal routine and went with biscuits and gravy. When our food came out, the french toast was 3 large pieces and pretty thick topped with powdered sugar. Looked delish! My biscuits and gravy was huge! 2 split biscuits topped with a hefty portion of gravy. If that weren't enough, it came with hash browns and scrambled eggs, enough to have their own plates. We sat right next to where the kitchen puts out the food and found it difficult to speak over the kitchen staff that were shouting orders back and forth at each other. I did appreciate hearing the manager send orders back to the cooks that weren't up to standard. All in all, we like the Metro for the friendly waitresses and good breakfast at the beach. My number one breakfast place (besides my dad's diner...sorry dad!) in Jacksonville. I stop here at least once every time I'm in Jacksonville. Great for big groups, which is lucky because my family is huge! We get together here quite a bit and the staff is always so great about handling big groups. This place is always packed. There's usually always a wait. But luckily they have free coffee and water for those who are waiting to be seated. When we do get seated, there's never a rush to eat and leave. There is always so much food, and I usually always get the same things...eggs, toast, bacon, and home fries...which yes, I could make at home, but I love the atmosphere here! And maybe even more importantly, the coffee is great and always flowing! Definitely a local hang out, and I usually always see at least one person I knew when I was young or in high school or something.
