When my family visits San Jose they love to get some Mexican bread to take home and I usually take them here. We stopped here after dinner to get some treats for my mom to take back home. There was a small line but the workers moved quick! One of the workers even came out to the lobby with a tray of fresh baked bread for everyone in line. We got our bread and spent nearly $50 with everything we got. Inside is a little small and with the small line forming it was a little cramped. What a gem!! We ordered the Milanesa torta, a cinnamon roll, and a slice of caramel cake. Everything was SO GOOD. The torta came out hot & crispy and it was stuffed with toppings. My hand almost wasn't wide enough to pick it up because there was just so much stuff in it. It probably weighed at least 2 lbs. My fiancé and I were originally going to share the whole torta but we only finished half together. I love how the meat was thin and crispy and the avocados were creamy and so fresh. For how many toppings there were in the sandwich, the bread actually held up really nicely and didn't get soggy at all. I would definitely reorder this sandwich. The caramel cake was so moist while surprisingly being not too sweet. It was such a huge slice and we loved how every bite was drenched. There are 3 small tables for you to sit and enjoy your meal. There is one restroom but you may have to ask the cashier to open it with the key for you. What is inside the sandwich (torta)? It is a hot sandwich with your choice of meat, jalapeños, avocado, cheese, onion and tomato. For the beef sandwich it came with 7 layers of meat and the breaded meat was 4 layers of meat. Came in late in the evening for some pan dulce and the place had a line. 10 minutes later we made our selections and hat them boxed up. All the bread looks delicious and I wish I could take one of each, however, I only need a few pieces. $40.00 later were out the door and satisfied with our treats. Wow! To come to a place for a late night craving you would think that you would probably end up with the leftovers and still baked goods from the day. Boy was I wrong! I walked in at around 8 PM when they close at 9 PM and the shelves were just as full as you would find them in the morning. That end of itself was a good sign. And I initially went in for a Tres Leche craving that I was having but the Choco flan was calling my name. I decided to get both and then I looked above the shelf and seen the strawberry cream cheese pastry that was also calling my name so I got that too. My total came up to almost $12 and I thought that in and of itself was such a great deal for two pieces of cake and a pastry. I got in my car Uber excited to try a little bit of everything. I started with the strawberry cream cheese pastry Sigh that was the softest and fluffiest most flavorful pastry I have ever had in my life again. it was almost close to closing, and it was still fresh and delicious. Up next I needed to taste the chocolate flan cake upon first bite. It was decadent moist and I couldn't stop myself from eating more. I ate half of it hehe. I then moved on to the Tres leches The whipped cream, the flavor, the moisture it was perfectly saturated with the Tres leches, not too wet and also not too dry it was just right (said Goldilocks). I wish I had something like this on my side of town in Antioch but the best things come in places like this. The cake underneath was dense and moist, and the flan was super smooth and creamy but still light. It was the perfect balance and had a hint of coffee flavor, and it surprisingly was not too sweet! They decorated it nicely with strawberries on top. Though it should be refrigerated, it doesn't melt like an ice cream cake, so it was perfect for a work event. My, Oh, My! the tortas here are HUGE! when you first walked into the bakery you can smell that baked goods smell -- so yummy! there's huge selection of different cakes, pastries, and breads so many you wish you can sample them all before you buy. We ordered the Milaneza and the Cubana tortas -- they were GIGANTIC! 3" in height! the Milaneza had like three slabs of carne stacked on top of fresh avocadoes, tomatoes, cheese, and onions The cubana had hot dog, egg, ham, cheese, tomato, avocadoes, and chorizo - it was monstrous! The breads were soft and light. Personally I like the Milaneza more. It had a good balance of meat, veggies and bread, meanwhile The Cubana, was just really too heavy. The chorizo in the Cubana was too much for me - the taste was overpowering everything. I had this sandwhich at noon, by 7pm, I was still burping that Cubana taste (not very pleasant). San Jose Yelp bucket list item: check. Mexico Bakery is a pretty long-lived and well-Yelped spot which I've been aware of for perhaps as long as I've used Yelp. I finally resolved to go today after even one of my out-of-town friends (granted, she visits very often now) recommended it to me. Although the display case is full of Mexican baked goods, the most-Yelpe-about goodies are listed on a small menu above the register and cooked in the kitchen in the back. The employee who took my order wasn't confident in her English much beyond taking my order, so be aware of that if you're hoping to ask menu questions. Tortas are clearly the must-try here, and I went for a "Milaneza" ($13.80) with everything on it. Milanesa (the more common spelling) consists of beef pounded thin and then breaded and fried. They provide a whopping three layers of this per torta, so that made it even more difficult when I ran into tough parts of the meat seemingly every other bite. I confirmed with said friend that this isn't normal, so I guess I got especially unlucky today? That said, the cumin on that milanesa breading was awesome and reminded me of a great falafel in San Jose. Also, every other part of the torta was great: soft bread, avocado, queso fresco, tomato slices, lettuce, pickled jalapeños were all fresh and enjoyable. Portion was pretty big overall, of course. I also tried a tamal Oaxaqueño preparado ($4.40), which was a pretty huge portion as well. The masa ended up nice and soft, and the chicken and whichever sauce was used on for the filling was tasty and mildly spicy. The result of the $0.40 premium for "preparado" wasn't perfect; although they did ad tons of queso fresco on top, some of it was still kinda cold I sat down in their dining area to taste it. It might be a better end-result if you have to take it to-go and let it steam up the cheese a bit. Regardless, very happy to get the cheese, sour cream, and salsa on top of a good tamal. Mexico Bakery is definitely worth trying if you haven't been yet. Hopefully you have better luck with the milanesa cuts than I did because that's what's keeping this out of the top tier for me. read more

Came here around lunch time on a Thursday and it was pretty busy. I've been here a few times before noticed that they have a self checkout kiosk now which was pretty cool. I've always ordered their tortas, but know that they are very filling that half of that amazing sandwich would work for me. I highly recommend their tortas! This time I ordered a chicken quesadilla and omg! It was very substantial. If you ever order chicken quesadillas elsewhere and are disappointed that you never get enough chicken, you have to come here as they are not stingy with their meat. It was nicely cooked and juicy. A bit too much meat for my liking as it felt like 80/20 of meat vs cheese. I love how the quesadilla wasn't soggy and still had a nice crust because it was made fresh, but be careful as the foil was hot while opening. As for the chocoflan, it's a favorite! If you've never tried this delightful dessert, you're missing out, especially if you're from East Side San Jose area. The most popular ones are Carne Asada (Steak) and Milanesa (breaded thin steak). I've also had Pierna, Jamon, Chorizo, Lomo, Cubana, and Queso. All are good, but I migrate back to the Milanesa. When we went to go pick up the order at the agreed time, the bakery employee let us know that our order would not be ready for another HOUR AND 15 minutes PAST our pick up time. The employee we spoke to offered to deliver the order to us since they wouldn't be ready for a while. Our event was scheduled from 8:30am - 10:30am and we did not receive the order until 11am. When we asked for a refund over the phone the manager Emmy agreed but when we tried to get the refund we were told we had to visit the store in person to get the refund. After a nice hike within the Alum Rock park, we decided to stop by some place local. So glad we found this place on the yelp app! We both ordered the tortas: one chorizo and one Cubano. The sandwiches come out super fast and the service was really quick as well! While we waited, the cashier showed us the different pastries that they sold also. One of the other customers recommended this long sugar coated pastry that tasted a lot like the sugar cookies you can get at Costco. Mexico Bakery is a tiny (okay not THAT tiny) in a strip mall that has a TON of Mexican baked goods. No surprise there right? but they also have some of the best (that I've had) Torta's. The sandwiches are huge and really, the wife and I should have shared one. Milanesa - Breaded beef. Large and great taste and super filling, this is the sandwich we will always be getting (in addition to whatever else we'd go there for). Cubano - Chorizo, hot dog, tons of other things? Well, to be honest, the Chorizo was a little heavy on the oregano and spices but it was good. Ultimately both of us thought it was too strong in spices so we'd pass on it again in the future but don't let that stop you from getting it. Cookies - They were okay. A little dry, but very pretty and got the kids excited. Flan - Mmmm Flan, great execution of a creaminess and sweetness. Would definitely get again. Mocha Cake - the cake itself was a little dry but added with the whipped cream and poured on sweet cream it was very good. In the end we'd likely not get this again.
