yay mexican food! It's been so long since I've had mexican food! Located along the main strip of Coronado, Miguel's is situated in a hotel. We parked on the street with no issue on a Friday evening. We were also surprisingly seated right away inside (which was great because I was freezing!) The queso dip that everyone mentions is pretty amazing. (That's the white sauce everyone!) I'm used to paying for that extra luxury, not having unlimited queso for free. We ordered the salsa trio, which wasn't the best idea as the habanero salsa wasn't tasty, just painful. We really didn't need it as the food came out pretty quickly. As delicious as the shrimp enchilada was, I was disappointed that it was slathered in a white sauce. I really enjoy red sauce and should have requested it. The steak was a little chewy for my taste, but luckily I was pretty full. This tasted more Cal-mex than mexican food in my opinion, which is not surprising in Coronado. The service was spot on with bus boys and waiters always coming by to check on us, but I just cannot give it higher than 3 stars because of the taste. read more

Stumbled upon this place on an impromptu bike ride in Coronado. It's nestled in the courtyard of Mission-styled shops. Wonderful ambience- so warm, cozy, and romantic... The food was absolutely delicious! I had the shrimp burrito with the signature white sauce. The shrimp was perfectly cooked and plentiful. They also had a great selection of Mexican beers to wash it all down. If it weren't for the bike rack in front of the area, I would have never discovered this hidden oasis. Great for groups! fantastic ambiance, lovely music and good food! they have a great cheese dip, finger lickin good!! I thought the overall layout was fantastic, while you wait the HUGE tub of tortilla chips and salsa are staring at you, and you can eat it! theres also a bar right next to the check in area so you can have drinks and eat your chips as you wait. Now yes, this is an appetite spoiler, so contain yourself, yea im talking to you. By far, my favorite Mexican Restaurant in ALL of San Diego..... yes, some people may think I'm crazy and it might have a slight edge due to the fact that I have eaten here since High School... but still. AWESOME. I tried to bribe my waitress to give me their recipe for white salsa before I moved out of San Diego (she actually gave it to me at no extra cost!). This location can be crazy during the tourist season, but with a huge outdoor patio it's great for a big group or a nice night out for two. I have had almost everything on the menu..... but my favorites continue to be: THE WHITE SALSA. Do not touch mine, get your own bowl. Chicken burrito, Fried Calamari, Lobster Tacos, and for dessert.... try the Mud Pie, it's not exactly Mexican in my book but it's great. read more

This place is spectacular. The atmosphere, the food, and the price are all 5 stars. I don't quite understand why there are two restaurants that show up on Yelp for this place. Kinda weird. They give you chips, salsa, and an AMAZING white cheese sauce complimentary, I get the surf and turf burrito every time I go and I end up taking most of it home. So so good! Eh. It's visually pleasing in a plastic-y kind of way. Nice that it's off the street in a shady courtyard. Service was fine. But the margaritas were just average and the food was, IMHO, less than average. Neither of our plates was satisfying. My shredded chicken salad was mostly lettuce and boring chicken (was it boiled?). The first time I came here, I had friends visiting and we stumbled upon this place walking around town. We shared a pitcher of margaritas and they gave us chips with their famous white sauce! Seriously, it was so good. Come for the white sauce! We sat outside and enjoyed the sun, people-watched and it was a nice Sunday. I recommend it for a low-powered relaxing time. I came back with a buddy last week to relive the dream and this time we ate food-food too. We sat inside because it was a little chilly, but the interior was cute and inviting. It had a homey type of feel -- comfortable. We shared the fish tacos, which were great, had maybe 3 baskets of chips with jars of the white sauce and a pitcher of their habenero margarita. It was a Sunday again, so it was nice to just relax. It wasn't loud or super busy, just consistent with a good amount of people. This is a Mexican restaurant. On Coronado. With almost no Mexican clientele. This is normally a recipe for a low review, but Miguel's is saved by two things: their jalapeno white sauce and the shrimp enchiladas. Seriously, if you eat here you will want to drink their complimentary white sauce when it comes out with the chips like it was a margarita. The stuff is probably almost entirely made of heart-stopping cream, but it's soooo good. Now they sell it in take-home containers! The shrimp enchiladas are also delicious, with huge shrimp and drenched in, you guess it, white sauce and cheese. My cousin always orders the calamari torta which is really good too. Flavorful and crispy breading and tender calamari and served with a side of...you guessed it...jalapeno white sauce, it's pretty amazing. Everything else I've ordered here has been wholly unspectacular, and the service can get pretty bad when they're busy. Still, I'll continue to eat here because I love me some jalapeno white sauce! read more

Well the regular Miguel's didn't have a bar to sit up on, so we got sent around to Miguelito's. Not so bad, cute little place around the side. Let me start off by saying you should have a HAPPY HOUR every day of the week!! SO the prices are what you would expect from a place in Coronado, Kinda high and you get the look if you don't order food, Whatever I'm used to it, used to work in Coronado as well. What you cant knock is the White Jalapeno cheese sauce, that's a A+ no matter what. I think i might need to check this place back out on a happy hour time just to see what kind of crowd shows up in Old ass Coronado =) read more

They serve breakfast here, but don't bother with it. Omelets are offered with your choice of rice & beans or potatoes & fruit. I asked for potatoes and fruit, and was instead brought rice and beans. I asked why and they said they did not prepare any potatoes that morning. So why didn't they tell me that when I ordered my food, I wonder? Then my boyfriend bit into his breakfast burrito, and it had potatoes in it. Hmm. I asked the waiter if there were no potatoes, then why are they in the burrito? He said there WERE potatoes but they were only to be used for the burritos. I feel like this was made very difficult for no good reason. He offered to bring me something else to eat but I didn't want more food, just the food I ordered. They did not give us a discount on the bill, either, so I paid full price for food I didn't want and left. The only good thing I'll say is that they still give you chips with salsa & queso even at breakfast...if you're hungry for that sort of thing first thing in the morning. read more

After posting a picture of my 10-year-old son and I in Coronado on Instagram I got a bunch of messages that insisted I check this place out. So glad we did! What a gem! The wait on a Tuesday night for two was 45 minutes but once seated I ordered the Skinny Boss Margarita which was delicious and made me immediately forget about the wait! Not too sweet and served in an Old-Fashion bar glass, not in a margarita glass, just the way I like it! They make their tortillas fresh right there. You can watch them prepare them. My son had TWO orders of the kid's quasadilla. He proclaimed it the best he had ever tasted! I had the swordfish tacos. One is really taking a step of faith when ordering swordfish because it's incredibly easy to butcher the poor thing. Usually it's too dry or over done --especially when blackened. Not this little guy! He was perfectly prepared. I ordered two taco -- the tortilla was A...mazing -- and both with swordfish. Now let's talk about this white sauce they service with their chips and salsa: Unlike anything I've ever tasted! Kind of a creamy white cheese sauce with chopped jalapeno mixed in it. MIguels is a nice place. They really have a large restaurant and we were lucky to get a seat in the newer area situated on the street along orange ave. I decided to get a margarita which was good. It wasn't too large but it packed a good punch plus it was good. We decided on a small appetizer of the calamari strips. It came with 2 salsas and a hot carrots. The jalapeno sauce was good. I liked that one the most. I then ordered the enchiladas suizas with chicken. The enchiladas were great. My gf tried the chile verde pork burrito wasn't so great. The beans and rice were good sides but I wasn't able to finish my food. I got really full from the chips and salsa and wasn't able to have any dessert. I would come back again. I loved the surroundings of the restaurant. You could buy the stuff right off the shelf for souvenirs! read more

Oh my God. Delicious. My food was so good I could barely speak. This may have been partly due to the fact that I was starving when it came. The service was a little on the slow side. I had fajitas, and they were awesome. Everyone seemed to enjoy their food, except for my niece, who found a hair in her salad. She said it was a good salad until then. Desserts were delicious. We have gone to Miguel's Cocina for special family occasions for years and years (maybe even 20 years). We just love the outdoor courtyard. Love the fresh air. It's a casual atmosphere. I recommend it for an affordable way to spend quality time with your family or friends. The warm cheesy sauce and chips are enough reason to go but their entire menu is also very good. My mom orders the carnitas fajitas each time and loves it! I usually try different things everytime and it's solid Mexican food (not gourmet but very good). How in the world Is this a four-star restaurant??? The food was not good. The service was extremely slow. The drinks were overpriced and underwhelming. Margaritas were $13 didn't taste like they had anything other than sweet-and-sour, and then had to add a shot of tequila which cost an additional $13...so paid $26 for margaritas that gave me heartburn before I can leave the restaurant. Spoke to a manager and all he could do was argue with me about how I didn't know what I was talking about, and how their drinks were made perfectly. Guacamole had more onion and tomato then Avocado. Once again, how in the world this restaurant is four stars beats me. The beans and rice were bland and the Chile relleno was incredibly disgusting. It was sweet and tasted like it was covered in a chalky cake batter. I can't say enough bad things about this place. Don't waste your time or money people! It's pretty horrible. We sent back our entree because it was disgusting and even though we didn't eat our app of guacamole because it was all onions and tomatoes they charged us. This is a decent value for Coronado. The place is located in an old hotel, but you would hardly know it. They have a variety of seating from indoors, to covered patio, to outdoors. We went around 5 and did not have to wait. We did notice a long wait at 6:30, but they were giving people chips and salsa, while they waited. Very nice touch. I can not say a discouraging word about their service. It was very friendly and very attentive. If the server was not in range, there were others all too willing to please. Now, the food: It's pretty gringo, but what do you expect in Coronado? The chips came with a choice of a melted white cheese sause or traditional salsa. Salsa was so-so, cheese sause was good, and the servers kept it coming. My son ordered a carne asada burrito, served with beans and rice. He ate it all and was hungry still, which told me that it was not a good size for a full meal. His fiance had a tostada salad. It just seemed okay. She had a lot left over, and didn't bother packing it up. On the waiter's suggestion, I had a large special tostada salad. The dressing was heavy with mayonise, and I had wished I ordered something else. So.....San Diego is full of authentic Mexican "hole in the wall" places. Impressing a date? Take her here; good atmosphere and service, reasonable prices. Want to eat really good authentic Mexican food? Get off the Island, and go into Chula Vista or National City, and go where you see authentic Latino families eating, and join in the fun. read more

love the white chile dip for the chips. I love fish taco's but in a fried flour shell. 1st time i got it at Old Town location it was perfect but now i have tried it at Pt. Loma twice and not as good. Going back to Old Town and see it is still just as good now as it was then which was a year ago. read more

Maybe I visited Miguel's on a off night but I've had better Mexican food. The boyfriend and I went to Miguel's on a Friday night. There was a wait when we arrived (to be expected) but we only had only waited about 10-15 minutes when our pager went off. The hostess lead us outside to a really pretty location but apparently a waitress had sat our table while we were on our way. So back inside we go to wait for the next table. Now I understand things happen but we were really bummed because it was a great table and now pretty much any other table would not compare. So we get escorted to a new table - one inside, in the back, right by the waitstation. BOO! I hate sitting by the waitstation. But it was packed, we were hungry, so we took it. The chips and salsa came out and the basket was huge. There was also a bowl of something that appeared to be queso. It was and it was very tasty. In fact, it turned out to be the best part of the meal. I ordered the taco/tostada combo and boyfriend ordered a carne asada burrito. My taco was okay, the meat didn't have much flavor. My rice was overcooked but the beans were okay. I only took a few bites of the tostada. Again, just okay. Boyfriends burrito could have been better. It seemed like it had foodservice taco seasoning in it. Yuck. While it wasn't the worst place ever (the queso saved it) it was certainly not the best. Gringo Mexican food for sure. Already a plus before any service. - Must agree, the white cheese dip was awesome. Other salsa was a bit spicy, but I'm sure mixing 'em up would be a good experiment. The additional veggies were nice, too. - Good enough service, though it took a few tries to get a lemon put in my water glass. - Pretty good food, not the best, but their drinks are top notch. Very touristy location, which should be expected considering the location on Coronado. But add to the overwhelming amount of tourists some subpar mexican food -only 15 miles from Mexico, no thanks. The guys from work will drag me here on occasion for a lunch but that is the only time I go in there. OH, and it's expensive!
