Miguels has a great cheese/jalapeno dip, that is where it pretty much ends unless you are going out for drinks, this is some of the worst mexican food ever, the only thing that food wise is appealing is the shrimp enchiladas and the shrimp coctail.... the beans a mexican staple are sooooo American might just as well go to Vons and buy a can of Rosarita and heat them in the microwave.... just a fact: the people who work there don't eat the crap that you get served, the cooks are mexican and know how to cook real mexican food but are told to cook it as the recipe goes.... they never eat it themselves, they have standards when it comes to their own food. read more

Five Stars for: Jalapeo White Sauce, Shrimp Enchiladas and the Jumbo Shrimp Burrito. The rest of their food is about 3 stars. Their rice and beans are not very flavorful. The tacos are a bit greasy. The chile rellenos don't hold a candle to the ones I make. Their chicken and shrimp dishes are good, but that's about it. Oh, and their albondigas soup is tasty. There is something to be said when you sit down at a Mexican place and instead of the usual chips and salsa, there's also a delicious cup of queso to go with it. Not just the usual yellow melted cheese in a cup, but Miguel's has the magic blend of monterey goodness and secret mix of what seems like creamy sour cream, maybe some ream cheese and jalepenos. An impromptu trip down to San Diego lead me to a visit of the wonderful little island across the bridge I use to live from. Light lunch to start from our walk on the beach, my friends and I settled into Miguel's for some early margaritas and cheesy goodness. They offer a variety of tacos, and burritos, but what seems to be popular is the various combination plates. We had our fill of pork tacos, nachos, carne asada burritos and their ooey goodness of queso and chips. The staff is friendly and personal, offered suggestions and pointed us to a few things to do while in San Diego. Overall, I loved it. Definitely a place I would recommend for a night out with friends or date night, the atmosphere is like a little cantina out under the canopies hidden away in the little court. The margaritas make the food taste better! They have to, because it's really not that spectacular. Been to Miguel's several times. This one on Coronado and two others. The food is really just mediocre. I've tried several different things from their menu. Tacos, enchiladas, tamales, rellenos, all just.....OK. I have yet to try anything there that makes me go "DAMN that's good!". I have to give some special love to one dish, however, and that is the Calamari Relleno. This is what my husband orders every time we go there and it draws plenty of verbal exclamation about its greatness out of him. It's a Relleno wrapped in a Calamari steak, and it ranks very high on his Yummy Meter. The White Jalapeno Cheese Sauce is pretty good. I've had really good batches and one batch in particular that tasted very floury (is that a word?). I really wish it had more flavor. Especially for the fact that it has the word "Jalapeno" in the title. There are little green flecks in the sauce, but no spice at all. The drinks are way overpriced. Unless, of course, you think that 10-12 for a little margarita is a bargain. And don't be fooled...it's not because they have a good amount of liquor in them. They are actually quite weak. There is no doubt I will find myself at Miguel's again, since the hubby is in love with that Calamari Relleno. Probably going to skip the drinks next time, buy a decent bottle of tequila on the way home and just make my own. read more

The patio is shaded by a bunch of trees, and you're not exposed to the noise of the busy street like some of the other restaurants nearby. If you are looking for that one great Mexican meal in San Diego, look some place else. Don't get me wrong, I like Miguel's and I do eat here because it is a great atmosphere, usually solid service and great margarita's, but the food is just average compared to El Agave, Candelas, Super Cocina, Ortega's or a dozen plus other places in San Diego. I wouldn't make the trip over from San Diego to eat here, but if I am in Coronado, I am fine coming here, especially with friends. It is a fun place to go with friends, but expect to wait on the weekends or in summer 20-40 minutes. They do give you all the chips and salsa you can eat while you wait so grab a margarita and find a place to sit while you wait. read more

Came in at a Friday afternoon and was seated right away. Parking could be hard to find. Were handed plenty of appetizers, chips and SALSA AND CHEESE DIPS! The dips were awesome and delicious but the chips weren't the best but do-able. Shrimp Enchilada was amazing according to my boyfriend's dad. I didn't enjoy the enchilada de mole plate in which I never tried before. The sauce was not my favorite. My boyfriend and his mom got the chicken fajita in which they both enjoyed but mentioned did not top their favorite restaurant, as in it's not the best. But still, pretty good. The $6 mud pie was smaller than expected but was tasty! For the size, don't think it was worth it personally. Service.. by far one of the most accomodating, hospitable, caring and downright awesome service I've experienced in a long while. Server took the extra mile to make sure we liked our dish. And kept his word when it came to talking to the chef and coming back with answers. Most of the times servers wouldnt give a flying crap! Service here is THE BEST! I didn't catch his name, but a tall gentleman with brownish hair, you are the best server I've met! Overall, this is a GOOD mexican restaurant. Ate here after arriving on Wednesday. Amazing. Still great food and service after not having been back in two years. Hubby got some sort of burrito with shrimp. He devoured the whole thing. What a great place! Super fresh authentic Mexican food that can't be beat. The ambiance is wonderful also with seating outside on the back patio, inside, or at the entrance on the side. An extensive drink menu including several delicious margaritas from which to choose and impeccable service all combine for a great experience. Be sure to save room and don't eat too many of the complementary chips and salsa they bring in the beginning! I don't eat meat, but I eat seafood, and they were nice enough to make me a seafood taco sampler. They were all delicious, but my favorite was the sword fish taco. Fernando was very attentive and his recommendations were spot on! I have tried the Point Loma location and just love the white cheese sauce and we were in Coronado this weekend at 9pm and we gave it a try. It would not have been my first choice but on Coronado almost everything seems to close early. I was delighted with the atmosphere, it was a warm night and even though we got there late the staff was very friendly. I had the shrimp Cesar salad and my girlfriend that the Chile Reyeno (sp) and they were both great. Not what I call traditional Mexican food but better than a chain. read more

This restaurant was excellent! I went with my wife and we were in love with the food since we're both foodies. The empanadas were amazing. My wife had the pollo asados and I had the enchiladas rancheras. Everything was cooked well and excellent portions. The drinks were very good too. Wow. Excellent food. I don't consider myself a margarita expert, but I've been known to be an "avid enthusiast" of the delicious drinks. Do yourself a favor and order the 'Millionaire Margarita" and enjoy. This drink was by far one of the best I've ever had. not too SWEET, not too overpowering, just right. The food, worth a return trip. We were staying right next to the del and this was an easy walk, even with a baby and stroller. We will be back next time we are in Coronado for sure!!! read more

Just a tip: Don't drink margaritas after a long morning in the sun and surf. Took surf lessons the last time I visited San Diego and my brother/SIL suggested Miguel's for a late lunch. Woo-Hoo, was I HAPPY after my drink! Before I really get off topic, on to the review. Miguel's drinks have been good everytime I've been there. The margaritas are very refreshing and tasty. I love the decor of the restaurant. Even though it's tucked between buildings, the big plants and big open areas make it seem like a more natural setting. It's very pretty and it really makes me feel like I'm on a vacation (well, every time I've been to San Diego, it's always been a vacation) The food is good, standard Mexican restaurant food. I prefer salsa verde, and I love the salsa verde there. My favorite meal is the Enchilada Suizas. I agree with what some of the other reviewers mentioned-- the white cheese sauce that you get with your chips is really good. Of the dozen or so times I've been there, I can only say I've been disappointed once (bad service and my food was very dry--don't know what happened in the kitchen that day) But that was only one time, I think I've been happy enough at most visits to definitely warrant future visits when I'm in town. read more

Came here on a long weekend in Coronado because it was close to our hotel. Little did we know that we had found a tucked-away gem! We didn't have much but EVERYthing we had was very good. Beginning with the fresh chips and their salsa/cream sauce dip (GREAT together!), to our Ultimate Margarita, and some home-brewed beer, nothing was disappointing. Even the Happy Hour taquitos were better than expected. Great outdoor/semi-shaded seating, made for a very relaxing afternoon! We didn't eat anything beyond the Happy Hour menu, so I can't confidently give them 5 stars, but I'd love to come back and try out more of the menu! read more

Just a few minutes walk from the Del Coronado Hotel, one of the must-see tourist spots in San Diego. I absolutely love Mexican food and when I'm in SoCal, I always make it a point to eat Mex at least once because you just can't get good authentic Mexican food in the Great White North where I spend most of my days. I especially love tamales. But not all places have them because they are very time-consuming to make. So when I saw tamales on the menu here, my choice was easy. They did a bean and a chicken tamale with all the usual delicious sides and sauces. Luckily I was hungry but there was no way I could finish it all. Especially after indulging in their addictive complimentary nacho chips and white cheese sauce. So yummy. The decor was bright and lively. Bright red tables, painted tiles, colourful pottery and lush plants gave the place a lot of visual interest. Great for photos of you and your dinner party. The waiters are only too happy to snap one for you. Fun place and great food. Salud!! read more

This place should really be rocking. The atmosphere is awesome. The service is good. The outdoor patio and bar are very solid. After all, this place is in the same family with Brigantine and Azul in La Jolla. Here is the whole deal - the food is high quality, a bit pricey and exceedingly boring. Don't get me wrong, the food is not bad. To the contrary, things are fresh, hot and well presented. It's simply not authentic. Everything is toned down, super safe, almost sterile if that makes any sense? Very little spice, no real heat in anything, even the salsas can't make you crack a sweat. For example, the carnitias are not re fried to get the nice crisp that you should expect. The hot carrots are, well, not hot. The refried beans don't seem to have much lard in them (good for health, bad for taste) and are more ranchero style. If you are looking for a quality alternative that's only a few miles away, try La Finca in Bonita. It's the real deal with all the flavor and character included at no extra charge. I'm in the minority here so take it for what its worth... read more

I have been dining at Miguel's since 1984 on our family's vacations in Coronado. I just love this place!!! The patio is adorable, really adds to the experience. The white sauce that they deliver with the chips is OUT OF THIS WORLD!!! I have even gone so far as to make it at home, but now you can actually buy it from the restaurant and some local grocery stores. I may or may not have a container of it in my fridge right now! The food is good too, especially anything with the white sauce or the shredded beef. The shrimp burrito or enchiladas are especially good, and there is really no filler, they are stuffed with big, plump shrimp! I wasn't drinking margaritas back in 1984, but the last few times I have really enjoyed the Green Iguana, a margarita that is dressed up with Midori! The only negative I would give Miguel's is for their beans, they aren't bad, its just that they aren't that good. I wouldn't bother with them unless they come with the dish that you are ordering. I will have to wait a whole year until I go back to Miguel's, so I guess it is good that I went 3 times during my last trip! read more

We checked out Miguel's while spending the day at the Del. It was just across the street, and we'd heard it had great Mexican food. The setting was actually spectacular. We ate on a very cute patio that was decorated very nicely and had lots of plant-life (one of my strange new hobbies). The chips arrived and were served with their famous white jalapeño dip. That stuff was the bomb! It was not overly spicy - but was cheesy, warm and delicious! A similar, but better version of the chips and queso you would get at Chili's... but they were free at Miguel's! I ordered two enchiladas, one chicken and one cheese. Both were good, but I thought the sauce was just ok. I did steal a bite of the chili rellanos, and it was off the chain! Overall, I can recommend if you are on Coronado and you are looking for a tasty yet affordable meal. 3.5 stars! read more

This place has gone downhill. I used to be such a fan of Miguel's, but I'm honestly disappointed with my last visit. Half of the food (chile verde with rice + beans) was cold and the flavor/portion size have both diminished. The cheese dip that I adored was also a let down. Not sure if it's gotten worse or if I have just mentally hyped it up, but either way it fell short. Without a doubt, Miguel's still has decent food (excluding the very rubbery flour tortillas) I also ordered a pomegranate iced tea. It was essentially iced tea, as there was no pomegranate flavoring whatsoever. I had some of my mother's margarita (not sure what the name was) but it was very good. So.....I'm not sure what to make of Miguel's anymore. Having had amazing experiences here I'm not sure if I'm ready to give it up completely. I think the reviews for Miguel's are inflated because of the limited options on Coronado. Miguel's is a good place for having chips (with white sauce, of course) and a margarita. It has an El Torito ambiance with matching mediocre food. I had the tostada grande (with black beans and no meat) and it was just so-so. The margarita, however, was delicious and for $10 I got about 3 servings out of it. I'd suggest stopping by after a day at the beach for some drinks, but go ahead and skip the entrees. read more
