I have eaten at Mimi's Cafe a few times. The first time was with family. The food was great, the service was okay as well. They were always busy too! Our most recent visit was actually on a date! I believe it was a second date. Anyway, the atmosphere was nice, not too loud. It was perfect for us to have a conversation. The decor was fun to look at too. Our waitress was working so hard, almost as if they were short staffed. She was still kind. I believe we waited a bit before she took our order. As we relaxed and kept getting to know each other, we realized it had been awhile since we ordered. We think we waited about 45 minutes before we got our food! The portions were plenty and the food was delicious. While the wait was not ideal, we don't blame the waitress. She was working super hard. Every staff member we saw was running around taking care of their guests! Overall, the food was good. Hopefully they have their staffing levels covered! Sadly i must update this review to a lower rating. I believe the pandemic has seriously affected this restaurant in both service & quality. You can see that I have 20 check ins here and that isn't probably even a 1/4 of the times i have been here over the years . While i can tolerate slow service or even being out of items i can not compromise on cleanliness and food safety/ quality. Today I went in for lunch and ordered a cup of my favorite corn chowder and a Chinese chicken salad. Simple enough right? I immediately noticed the silver ware looking old,dingy and severely water stained . 1st stike . The soup and bread basket was good which i ate with no issues , however when my salad arrived it looked suspect as the lettuce and cabbage looked old & wilted . I took two bites and could immediately taste rancid & mildew. I immediately pushed it away and notified my server ( who was completely professional & polite) he apologized and offered to get me something else which i of course declined. He came back with the comped Bill and said the cabbage appeared to be "slimy". I can promise you this is my last visit to Mimis. I usually don't complain at restaurants but today I have to say this, my husband, daughter & myself ate at Mimi's today & food & service was terrible. My daughter didn't get what she ordered so therefore asked for something different, after having to flag the waitress down. My coffee was cold & waitress did not bring creamer or even asked if I wanted it, so had to flag her down again just to get creamer but by that time coffee was cold. I asked for another coffee but she just put more in with the cold. She never came back to ask if food was ok, which it was not. Never refilled our drinks without having to stop her to ask for more. Waitress also never responded to whatever was said to her, would just walk away. I could see if she was extremely busy but she only had 4 tables to wait on. My daughter is a server at a very busy mid town place & she couldn't believe how bad our service was at Mimi's. This place is beyond amazing . We have been here three times in the past week and each time the drive, the food, and the experience have been pleasant. The drinks the food is seasoned well. The drinks are so damn good and well priced!! The mimosas should be illegal with how delicious they are. We drank about 6 a piece on our first visit . We have passed by this place so many times and wondered how it is. I am so glad we stopped and tried it. This is now a place where we are regulars. Where do I even begin. My family and I have been loyal customers for YEARS. Yesterday, we had the worst service we have ever had at any restaurant. Our server Joseph was absolutely unprofessional. I know working in the restaurant industry right now is stressful due to wages and being short staffed. However, this is not an excuse for yelling (yes yelling) at customers and ruining the dining experience. After not bringing the coffee we ordered for 30 minutes we changed our mind and asked for tea instead. He REFUSED to change our order and said "I was just about to bring it! Look I already brewed it for you! (pouring it into the sink)". We moved past that rude & awkward experience and asked for a bread basket (second mistake). Joseph said "you have to ask for that now; the coin and supply shortage is REAL. Pretty soon our doors will be closing!" and stormed out like if we had made an out-of-this world request. I apologized to Joseph for upsetting him. To which he replied "I am just frustrated that I was out there (pointing towards the entrance of the restaurant) setting up tents, taking them down, dealing with all these covid things and now we are worse off than before covid! It's nothing personal". We were so shocked and uncomfortable. What in the world was happening?! Besides the terrible service, the food was not how it used to be. The restaurant has a new owner and they have clearly made some changes. The tomato soup tastes like canned tomato sauce (used to be a favorite for us!) and the portions are a lot smaller. So if the service nor the food is good, please try a different restaurant. At least change servers if you end up with Joseph!! To top it all off, Joseph had the audacity to circle the tip suggestion area and write a thank you note. Now that was comical! One star for yesterday's terrible experience. 2 stars for all the other positive experiences we have had at this Mimi's for years. read more

All of it was so tasty and I always enjoy the homey atmosphere. I'd also like to add that the prices are so reasonable! I used to love Mimi's. Last time I was there with my husband and daughter it took 15 minutes after we were seated before anyone even acknowledged our presence. Once that happened and our orders were taken it took another inordinate amount of time for the food to come out. Let me add that it was NOT busy. As I was going to be late for an appointment I when our food was brought to the table I asked that boxes be brought for us to pack them. Since it was not our waitress who brought our food I couldn't ask for the check so I asked the hostess for it. Well, SHE couldn't be bothered. It's been quite a few years since Joe K and I had been to this restaurant. Probably because our last visit had not been so satisfying. It was pretty crowded and we were seated at the back near a large group of people who were very loud and required a lot of attention from the same waitress who was serving us. Our service was slow and we were dying of thirst because they never brought us water until the end of our meals! I can't even remember what we ate back then! But this time, we were driving along Laguna Blvd. deciding where we would like to have a late breakfast or early lunch. We looked over at Mimi's and thought what the heck, they are still in business, so maybe things have improved. It wouldn't hurt to give them another try! I'm so glad we did! It wasn't as crowded, so we got there at a good time! We were seated in a front dining area. Our waiter Robert was very nice and personable. Their seasonal menu had a lot of delicious looking options, making our selections a bit difficult. Finally I chose the "Salad Nicoise" which consisted of grape tomatoes, red onions, black olives, french green beans, roasted potatoes, sliced hard boiled eggs, mixed greens, tossed in red wine shallot vinaigrette, topped with tuna and crostinis. While Joe had a craving for the French Dip sandwich featuring sliced roast beef on a toasted baguette with a side of au jus. One of the main reasons we came here was that he remembered that they had the best French Onion soup! A savory broth of onions topped with swiss and parmesan cheese and a crostini. We had a much better experience and the food was very memorable! I enjoyed my salad with every tasty bite. I look forward to coming back more often now! read more

Only a breakfast review since I haven't tried anything else. Not the best. I ordered a breakfast braised beef burrito, over easy eggs with bacon and griddlecakes. Braised beef in a breakfast burrito did not do justice at all. Of course, it was my fault to even order that but I had to try. The eggs were good and bacon was great. Griddlecakes didn't wow me as I hoped. Tasted like pancakes I could buy from the grocery stores. I'm still a bit disappointed in no utensils. I guess you have to ask for them instead of getting them automatically but it's not a big loss. Had to drive back to get some. Burrito had bad avocados in them. They were not fresh. Black all around. I had to dig them out. Photos attached. All in all. It wasn't that great. 1 star loss for the avocados. Another star loss because food wasn't tasty. Hope they fix things up! read more
