This was truly one of the best place I've eaten at in my life. I was recommended this place by a co worker in California and when I came to Portland to visit, it was a must see. I've never had Sri Lankan food before so I had no idea what to expect but I was pleasantly surprised. Lots of outdoor seating and nestled in a quiet neighborhood. The food does take a bit to come out but it is all cooked fresh and high quality. Wonderful experience, I think everyone should come here at least once to try it out. read more

An interesting meal experience, three of us came here tonight for dinner. We took the family style plus the chik'n curry and the vade. Plenty enough for us, even a bit left over. Flavors were good, spice level was a bit high but tolerable. So why only three stars? This was our first visit and we are unfamiliar with their cuisine and vegan entries. When we were served, we asked the waitperson to identify the dishes. Rather than taking the time to explain them to us, they simply said that these were, "...everything that was included on the menu." Also - and this is only a personal thing - considering the importance of rice in a Sri Lankan diet, a bit more rice for a three-person meal would have been appreciated. While perhaps a lesser component of a rating, service is still important in creating an experience. In this case, our experience was somewhat diminished in attempting to recall the menu and identify what we were eating. First off, every thing is vegetarian, but the food was so good that you won't miss the meat. They have some fake meat options but we didn't get them. Maybe next time we will. You walk up to a window outside and place your order before finding your table. It has a self serve water area by the cashier to get your own refreshments. Also you bus your own tables. The inside seating area is really small, we opted to sit outside under the covered area, most tables have a heater above them. We went there on a Sunday and had ordered the weekend curry plate. They were large platters filled with variety and flavor. On our plate was lentils, okra, yellow rice , beets, potatoes and a cashew dish. It was around $20 a plate and could have been shared between 2 people. It was our 1st time there so we didn't know and ordered our own. My friend finished his whole plate, I got through about half and took the rest home, which still was delicious as left overs. My other friends ordered some type of crepe, we were not really fond of the filling, it was overpowering and just not our thing. They also ordered these yummy coconut, banana fritters that came with a chocolate sauce. Those were tasty. The rotis were delicious though, and I highly recommend getting them to eat with the curry plates. So we started going to Mirisata YEARS ago - when they first opened. At the time, the food was so good but also a little spicy for myself at the time. Fast forward to now, Mirisata is perfect! I won't touch on the breakfast there which is actually under another name even though I love it so I'll focus on the late afternoon/evening fare. The food is ridiculously rich and perfect. Honestly, I always need to share any kind of combo plate with my partner so that we can get appetizers and sides. They also have more of a variety now of spice levels across their menu. I'm not sure if you can request spice levels for each dish but there are definitely some dishes that are mild by default which helps. I can't speak to the service because we tend to get our stuff to go. But the ambiance of the outdoor area is super pretty, especially in the summer. I've never dined indoors there. I'm quite happy to have Mirisata nearby. read more

My friend of many years in PDX does yoga and met him abroad in India many moons ago. While I have spent heaps of time in India, he has been to Sri Lanka and I have not. He recommended this restaurant to me. The service was friendly. I went with the thali plate aka rice and curry plate. It was $24 USD and was authentic served on a round mandala silver plate with a banana leaf similar to how they serve thali in India. I went with the Pol Sambol. Everything was flavorful and vegetable heavy so was healthy. My only gripe was that it was way too much food. Greatly flavored food. Their hot butter prawns are amazing! It's my favorite dish from here and I love the use of the spices and flavors and etc. The flavors are honestly on point and I like the inside of the restaurant and the outdoor seating. All is vegan and they mark which menu items have gluten in the menu - which is helpful! I like the concept of charging more to pay the workers more so therefore you don't have to tip. More of restaurants should do that. It's nice to know the people serving are getting a good living wage! The employees who takes orders at the front is always helpful too. This place was all over Instagram and I had to visit them during my recent visit to Portland! When I walked in for lunch I was surprised to see that they had a huge covered outdoor space and small indoor dining (which I dint notice initially). The menu is upfront and you can decide and go to the counter. Remember their portions are huge so sharing is recommended. I ordered the Deviled Chicken, Sri Lankan Fried Rice and the Pineapple Upside down butter cake! Everything was delicious and very tasty. You can pick your spice levels and the food was flavorful but spicy (my fault for picking a higher spice level). The fried rice was a tad too sweet inspite of ordering spicy so that was a bummer. Their Pineapple butter cake is known to be sold out sooner so do ask for it even if you dont see it on the menu - it is DIVINE (says a person who does not have a sweet tooth so you know its good). My family and I came here on a whim when we were looking for a different cuisine to try and we're glad we came here. The variety of flavors for the plate of the day is such a deal. Only when we checked the menu we saw all is "fake" - meaning all is chikn or "pork" but when it is on your plate and in your mouth you will not taste it - or at least we don't care since it was very tasteful and we will come back for more. Also don't rust them when they say it's hot - take a slice level higher you normally would since it's giving you an extra kick. We also had the pineapple upside down cake with a real fruity pineapple lol. It was a perfect end for a meal. I've met my match! This Texan is right now almost (only almost!) WILTING under the withering onslaught of spicy spice spice of our Chick'n Curry from Mirisata... and that's a GOOOOOD thing! Somebody call in the Portland's true spice-nut... (are you listening Holy Foo?). That said, what a wonderful way to do it! I think we ordered pretty well. We got a Coconut Roti Meal to start with, and thank goodness we did! The roti are so full of tasty, buttery ghee goodness and a saving starchy grace absolutely necessary for not only mopping up fiery sauces, but helping to blunt their nuclear assault on your tonsils! The meal also included a mild potato curry soup and dahl (lentil stew) that were again on the mild side, so eating a bite or two between bits of the hotter stuff was the only thing that helped me make it through! Also got a nice order of Parippu Vade pigeon pea fritters, again, nice for mopping up sauce and fighting blazing fires. But, now onto the things that have Portland Fire and Rescue on high alert... The Chick'n Curry did not disappoint. Not only did the texture do a good job of imitating real chicken, but the dark, rich, and deep curry with minimum 3 alarm heat knocked this Texan back on her heels (thank goodness I don't wear stiletto's any more)! I had to eat some roti... some soup... some dahl... some Parippu Vade ... after every few bites just to... survive! I loved the Wambattu Moju, an eggplant dish billed as "pickled" but that is not so vinegary at all, super flavorful, also mild, so a nice palette cleanser between my tastebuds' delightful, wonderful, eye-popping, awe-inspiring curry-based saunas. We also had Pol Sambol, which is a small .... salad (?) of shredded coconut and spice, not quite as spicy as the curry, but still ... spicy enough. It's only as I write this that I realize that all the dishes we ordered were pretty mild except for the curry... but that this ONE DISH was so awesomely spicy that we both finished our meal feeling like we had been eating more spice than we had in a LONG LONG TIME! Is there a secret I might suggest? Simply, order one of the hot hot hot mains, like the curry, and then surround it with roti and other sides to help take the edge off. Your face will thank you for not melting it off. As an aside... What's going on here Portland? You used to be so allergic to spice that your anemic idea of "hot" seemed to be letting a jalapeño simply LOOK at your food. Restaurants and carts that offered any real spice soon enough seemed always to adjust their menus to accommodate your aversion to the Scoville's. And yet, every dish I've ordered recently has been truly, awesomely spicy. Interesting. Nice trend. Long live spice. read more

Ended up dining here after originally searching for Cooper's. Personally, I was a little turned off when I entered the indoor seating area. As soon as I opened the door, a staff member yelled from afar: "you know you're supposed to order outside right," and it just felt a little rude and unwelcoming, especially after walking in the hot heat to get there. As for the food, we ordered two different rotis. My wife liked her food, and I did, too, at first. However, the food just became harder and harder to finish as it was super oily. The rotis are really large and cut in half for you, so would recommend opting to share one if you're dining with others. read more

It was the perfect Portland evening for outdoor dining with a small group of friends. We had originally planned to go The Sudra, but discovered they closed for good the week before. To be honest I'm glad we ended up here! It has been on my list of places to try. We all ended up getting the Daily Curry plate, which has a sampling of several dishes, anchored by a cashew curry. There was a dal, a long bean dish, turmeric rice, choice of sambol, (I got the coconut) and maybe some other things? I also got a kind of thick roti (bread) that raised my eyebrows at $5. Seemed a little spendy for what I got. The daily curry plate was $24, which includes a tip. It has so much food I brought home 2 takeout boxes! So that seems like a good deal for 2-3 meals' worth. My 4 friends shared it but I was the odd person out. I didn't mind leftovers though because everything was excellent! Lots of delicious flavors were happening. It was so good I didn't miss meat or dairy. How refreshing to eat at a vegan restaurant that doesn't put kale in everything (rarely found in South Asia) or only offers brown rice (also not authentic.
