We finally got to Monarch. I originally had on a light summer dress, which maybe would have been fine, but I'm glad I changed into more of an evening dress. The place is gorgeous with great views. The inside reminds me a lot of Bullion. Apparently to get a window seat, yiu have to put a deposit down, which I thought I did. Oh well. It was still a pretty view. The place was packed in a Thursday night. It is truly a Dallas scene. It too a while for our server to come by and to finally get our wine. They want you to order everything a tince and they pace it out. The server was very nice and professional. The wine list is very overpriced but at least they are served properly. We ordered several dishes and shared. Of note, I really liked the meatballs and the carpaccio was some of the best I've had (we almost didn't order it because I've never been wowed by the flavors of it... But so glad we did). The spicy rigatoni was the star, along with their truffle mashed potatoes. We didn't love the fritto misto. We weren't a huge fan of the desserts either. There were definitely dirty dishes left on our table for awhile. It was hit or miss with service. Sometimes it was super attentive and then sometimes it seems like we were in our own. Fantastic place. Excellent service and great views My daughter loved the focaccia. Was a bit buttery for me but ok. Loved the olives. Ceasar salad was really fantastic w homemade croutons. Crispy. 3 could split although 2 of us polished it off. We celebrated our anniversary at Monarch and were absolutely blown away by several things. First, the attention to detail. You are greeted by the hostess in the lobby and are offered champagne for the elevator ride up. Once we arrived to the 49th floor, the ladies were welcoming and congratulated us on our anniversary. They offered to check my coat and showed us to our table. There is subdued lighting, and if you have a table by the window you have a fantastic view of Dallas. I was surprised to see several children at dinner, so it seems to be family-friendly to some point. I'm not sure how strict they are regarding the dress code but everyone was dressed accordingly. Our server Vaughn (sp?) was amazing! He, along with all of the staff we encountered, was supremely well versed in the menu (and even if he wasn't we would have never known). There was a personalized menu on our table and they brought over a candelabra for a romantic ambiance. The sommelier was kind enough to offer several suggestions and we loved the French pinot selected. We decided to go with the Royale which is several bites of the best they have to offer and WOW - what an experience! From start to finish we were constantly surprised by the flavors and Vaughn explained every element of each dish. The standouts were the lump crab pasta which was flambeed table side, the truffle potatoes and the toffee cake for dessert. It was a great way to taste a little bit of everything on and off the menu. Regrettably our experience started off very poor as a result of an unfriendly and discriminatory bouncer. His presence alone was overbearing, uncomfortable, and unwelcoming. I felt like I was at a club in a rough area. I was a guest staying at The Thompson which the restaurant is located in and was celebrating my birthday. I confirmed with the front desk of the hotel as well as the hostess the dress code. I confirmed men's sandals (Birkenstocks) were allowed but went up to change my other attire to abide by the dress code (for men, collared shirt, no athletic shirts/shorts/sweatpants). For women, practically no dress code. I came back down and was accosted by the bouncer saying I was not allowed up, but my mother who was wearing sandals, was. This clearly made no sense and was contracted by what 2 other employees said. I requested to speak with a manager. That's where everything turned around for a 5 star experience. I was met by Maitre D, Case who was extremely friendly and apologetic for the situation. Case went above and beyond to personally escort me up to the restaurant and offer us a round of drinks while we waited for an upgraded window table to become available. We were walked to the table and offered a very thorough run down and his suggestions on the menu. A short while later he returned and presented me with a personalized birthday menu. He routinely checked up on us to ensure we were enjoying everything. Our server Rachel was just as pleasant. She was very attentive and caring. She even took the time to write a detailed list of recommendations for things to do in the city since we were from out of town. I cannot say enough good things about the service once we got to the restaurant and the lengths they went through to recover us from our initial experience. As for the food, everything we had was fabulous. I ordered the Halibut, mom ordered Shrimp Scampi Ravioli, and we shared the asparagus, truffle mashed potatoes, and king crab leg. The crab leg was a bit overpriced in our opinion and came to us as a shock when we saw the $75 price on our bill. However it was still good and we did not mind as we were celebrating a special occasion and willing to spend more. He halibut was very flaky and delicious, and the mashed potatoes were to die for. I imagine anything else we would've ordered would've tasted just as good but we were extremely happy with what we ordered overall. My only suggestion to guests is that you call ahead to confirm the dress code to ensure you don't get all the way there to be turned away for something so simple. My suggestion to the Monarch is remove the heightened dress code requirements for men. This comes across as very discriminatory especially when I got up there and found women wearing extremely provocative clothing and bralettes. We dined at Monarch on Jan 29, 2023. We had an early 5:30 reservation so we could watch the sunset. And although it turned out to be cloudy, the view was really cool! Who knew there were so many rooftop pools! The ambiance and service were incredible. There is $10 valet parking and a glass of champagne awaiting at the lobby check in desk. I recommend bringing some $1s or $5s for tips. Although we were early, we were promptly seated. James from New York was our server. He was always there if we needed something but never obtrusive. Just perfect! And I am very picky about people interrupting or taking away my plate. Timing of the food was great as well. We opted for a window seat which was well worth the reservation fee. Drinks: dirty martini and vodka tonic. Prepared perfectly. Appetizer: We started with the ahi tuna . I think this was my favorite thing next to the bread-warm bread with ricotta & honey. Next we followed with a caesar salad (recommend splitting the salad - it is HUGE and good). Main course: we ordered the Lasagna Diane and shrimp scampi ravioli. Both were good but a little salty and could use a little spice (pepper flakes?) I know it's hard to appeal to everyone's pallet. The pasta dishes were very affordable considering the service and space. Wine: If you like wine, it would be best to study the 400 page wine menu prior to dining. (just kidding it's 102 pages). We ordered the $90 Enfield Syrah and it was "just OK" . We could have and should have consulted with the sommelier. They offered. Risotto was overly-salted. Scallops were over-cooked. Both were lacking in complexity or dimension of flavor. Croutons on Caesar salad were tasty. From the exquisite Appetizer to the most flavorful entrée recommendation (we had the calamari as an appetizer and Wagyu fillet for the entrée) all the way to the specialty soufflé for dessert...everything was cooked and plated beautifully. They even made me a menu with a special birthday message on it that was on display while we ate. If there were more than five stars, I would give Jay and Justin exactly that. I didn't think I would be so impressed my this place, but I have to give my applause to the chef. Nothing here is groundbreaking or unfamiliar, but everything is executed with high attention to taste! Make sure you book a reservation a month in advance, unless you want to eat late that night. Atmosphere wise, this place comes off a little stuffy, but still with plenty of new age flair with the diverse range of diners and the music choice. White table clothes and servers in fancy suits are quite blasé to me, but considering the price, I guess people do want to feel as rich as possible? The window seats are highly coveted, while also costing a pretty penny. If youre lucky, they'll seat you close to one. Depending on the time of the year, youll be graced with a lovely sunset radiating across downtown. Our waiter did his job, while not feeling overwhelming or aloof. Drinks were refilled and courses came at a reasonable pace. We ended up going with the Royale prix fixe, since we didn't want to think much about what to order. I think its worth getting, especially when they include lobster among the course. They have a decent liquor menu that will appeal to anyone's taste. They had a huge wine list that could care less about, but for someone else they seem to have a phonebook worth of inventory. The Wagyu Carpaccio, Crudo Flight, and Oysters are not an exposition in the chefs skills but rather his amazing access to fresh meats. All of them were a lovely primer for what was to come. Simple in their presentation, yet comforting in their immediate familiarity and rawness. The carpaccio is paired well with the shavings of truffle and dots of creme fraiche. The Caviar Service was pure heaven. Ive had caviar service many of times, but this felt like a pampering at the day spa. Every fixing you could add to the belini felt like the essence in it's fullest form. When there was shaved hard boiled egg, it tasted like the purest, flavorful egg imaginable. Eat these slow and truly savor the majesty these hold within them. Bread Service I believe changes from time to time, but this night was a focaccia. It was elevated with that whipped butter that they served that had me reaching for more. King Crab with Lobster Sauce and oversized elbow macaroni looking pasta. This was quite the spoon scooper! The approach here was slam as much shellfish taste amongst some house made pasta. This was hard to eat slow because each bite kept pulling me in! They make you work for the king crab claw meat, but every bite feels like a reward. The Wagyu Strip with au jus and truffles , asparagus and garlic mash felt like an abyss of deep flavor. Relying primarily on the au jus and truffles, this dish explodes with umami, weighing me down in an ocean tide that's dark and beefy. I would be curious to see if ribeyes would have been used before the pandemic, but then again, I wouldn't want to pay an additional hundred just for something currently pricey and scarce like ribeye. The desserts were Tiramisu Parfait and Sticky Toffee Pudding with Coconut Ice Cream. Not amazing, but definitely satisfying. The tiramisu was super creamy and had a nice espresso flavor. Once we got to our table was when things went a bit downhill. Our waitress was great, but often left water glasses unfilled and I sat with an empty wineglass and empty cocktail glass taking up front in front of me all dinner. The meatballs and calamari were good. The lasagna was INCREDIBLY SALTY to the point where everyone at the table couldn't have more than a few bites which was incredibly disappointing for $60. Monarch just eased it's way into my #1 in Dallas. This isn't just a meal, it's an experience. Take in the panoramic city views as you make your way to your table, it's truly breathtaking. Our server was excellent. She was so helpful in describing dishes and making recommendations. I meant to note her name so I could leave some praise, but I will update later. Now to my favorite part of any date night...cocktails! The cocktail menu is wonderful, and it changes seasonally! I got The Duchess (3 of them actually), a fruity, citrusy, and beautifully presented vodka based drink. Lovely. The house made focaccia is served with whipped ricotta + honey, soppressata, and olives. The ricotta is SO GOOD! To start we had the crudo, the salmon was the best by far. The saltiness of the capers and the light acidity of the lemon vinaigrette were such a perfect combo. We had the spicy rigatoni alla vodka as a mid course. I loved that it was actually spicy. A lot of times things are labeled "spicy" but cater to a mild palate and this had a good kick! Now for the main courses. Everything is cooked in a wood fire oven so you get an amazing smoky infusion in ever dish. I had the off menu lamb chops, and they were well seasoned, cooked perfectly, and really tender. Also tried the dry aged ribeye which took the prize for best steak I've had in Dallas ever. The crust was incredible. Perfectly seared, seasoned incredibly, cooked the PERFECT medium rare, tender, well-marbled but not excessively fatty. Every bite was bliss. For sides I tried the braised Tuscan greens and whipped potatoes. They were good, but the other dishes were so outstanding I actually didn't even eat much. For dessert I ordered the chocolate soufflé, and it was a very nice finish. Would've been delicious with an espresso martini, but I'd already overdone it on the cocktails for the evening. Monarch is as much about the atmosphere/experience as it is about the food. The food is good, don't get me wrong, but it wouldn't be nearly as coveted of a reservation if it weren't for the stunning restaurant, views of the city, and overall delightful experience, starting from the moment you receive a glass of champagne to sip on as you take the elevator all the way up to the entrance. We decided to splurge for their tasting menu ("The Royale") the first time we went, which is definitely one of the more memorable tasting experiences we've had. It's pricey but they truly do bring out the works for you, laying out several beautiful dishes for each course on your table, complete with caviar, champagne, etc. The two courses I remember & liked the most were the seafood course (great variety) and the traditional Italian course (which included their famous lasagna). This was easily one of the most fun dining experiences we've had. We got to the restaurant at 8:30, had reservations at 8:45 but had to wait about until 9:00pm get seated. No worries, they let just hang in the lounge and also give every guest a complimentary glass of champagne for the elevator ride up! However, compared to Monarch's rather popular sister restaurant in Chicago (Maple & Ash), this place did not nearly stay up to par in the dining or experience. The steak was good for Dallas/Texas standards. It's hard not to compare to their sister restaurant though and compared to that it was okay. We also had the Spicy Rigatoni that our server was kind enough to make vegetarian for us. The chocolate cake dessert was too sweet and a little dry for me. I did really enjoy the romantic ambiance of the restaurant and had an enjoyable evening. We were able to go up to the 360 observation deck after dinner to enjoy a drink with a view. It has prosecco in it. It is sweet, tart, strong, and light. Get it! A few sips and I was tipsy. We received complimentary bread with salami and butter topped with honey and truffle oil. The patrons varied dramatically, which is not something I expected at a higher end restaurant but something that is quite reasonable when you have a significant amount of hype involved. We were seated quickly and began a pretty good meal. We had Wagyu carpaccio, fritto misto, and meatballs to start, and the included warm crispy bread was a nice addition. Of the three starters, the wagyu was easily my favorite, which was unexpected. Often, the dish that has the least amount of preparation usually isn't the best part of the meal, but there you go! The fritto misto was pretty fresh although the flavor was fairly neutral. The meatballs were very good, and I would definitely have those again...they are big enough to serve as a lighter meal when paired with something else. For the pasta course, we had Shortrib bolognese and the cacio e pepe. Both were good, cooked to the right al dente and had decent flavor. And for our main course, we had the Salt Crusted Fish, Crispy Veal Parmesan, and Eggplant Bagna Cauda. The best item would be the veal parmesan, and honestly the fish was quite disappointing. Salt crusting usually results in incredibly soft fish, but this wasn't it. The eggplant was a nice side dish, but not as punchy as I thought it would be. Overall, it was a nice meal, in a lovely setting, although I did feel like the whole experience was a bit overhyped. Really enjoyed my BDAY dinner here! The views are INCREDIBLE on the 49th floor and loved our overall experience. We valet parked downstairs which was a good experience and super quick with friendly attendants. You're served champagne in the lobby for your ride up in the elevator which is a nice touch. All staff are super friendly and our server was great! Super attentive and did a great job at presenting the menu and highlighting their signature cocktails, wines and dishes. To start we enjoyed the fresh bread and the delicious butter that was a tad sweet along with the Fritto Misto (calamari) and shared the chopped salad. Both were really tasty. For dinner we shared the Cacio e Pepe.. it was a bit too salty and needed to be more hot temperature-wise. We also had the Momma's Spicy Rigatoni alla Vodka which was also good but also needed more heat with the temperature. Next time, I'd recommend requesting them to heat up which we should have done politely of course. :-) For dessert we enjoyed the pineapple cake and our server did a great job with giving me a BDAY card and a small box of truffles. I really appreciated our view which was also a nice touch for my special occasion. Overall, good restaurant but not exceptional. A place I recommend for the overall experience and ambiance. Drinks are great too and they have a very nice bar and delicious cocktails. It was very busy and we heard over 500 guests were at the restaurant which is a lot for a Sunday night. read more

It's a celebration! My 25th working anniversary. I had a small budget to use so I brought some friends along wit celebrate. Monarch was my first choice. The experience was wonderful. It's downtown on Elm Street and on the 49th floor where you can see the skyline depending on where you're sitting. I suggest that you RSVP early and make sure they know you're having a special occasion to snag a window seat. (That's not guaranteed! I don't want ya'll saying this Yelp Elite told me the secret knock.) The other reason is they're really busy. Even on a random Wednesday that place was hoping! We had a couple of complimentary glasses of sparkling wine before going up to the restaurant. We had a couple of cocktails , a celebratory tequila shot (it was national Tequila Day) and then we went to order. I wanted the Tuna Tartare (spectacular!!) It was so sweet, fresh and melts on your tongue. That's why those booth chairs are so soft. You takes bites of food and want to melt right into the cushions. We had the filet minion, Veal Parmesan (huge, tender and breaded just right), Lamb shank. We chatted and caught up on our busy lives. I love the ambiance of this place. They give you a glass of champagne for the elevator ride up to the top floor where the restaurant is. As soon as you enter the lights are dim and it's so pretty. I recommend requesting a booth by a window with a view. I ordered the lasagna for dinner, a glass of wine, and a desert drink and everything was beyond my expectations. It was everything.
