Do not give up if you do not readily locate Don Q's. It is obviously a family run establishment that uses local fresh ingredients. The Habanero Margarita was refreshing w/o being overly spicy. I ordered a NY steak dish that was good but not beef or smoke forward. For my taste, too much sauce and cheese that hide the beef flavor. The star of my meal was the Pablo of soup! It was so flavorful as a set up to the entree. The service was prompt and friendly as there are not a lot of tables inside. Give it a try. read more

One of the best dining experiences I have had in Atascadero since moving here May 2023! Staff was outstanding, we must have had 7 different servers come by our table to bring food, refill water, take away plates and check on us! The chicken enchiladas I had were the best! Ate here around 5:30 on a Friday and the place was kind of empty. It's a small place, and they have set up a big patio area outside in the parking lot. The food is interesting and delicious, and prepared in a timely manner. We had poblano soup, and Jalapeño poppers to start. The soup was very tasty, and the poppers were very interesting, and stuffed with cheese, vegetables, and fruit, and topped with a sauce. We both had Chili rellenos, 2 different kinds. My wife had the shrimp, and I had the pastor. Both were very good and filling. Our waitress was delightful and attentive. The bad thing is, the ambiance. The interior is not exactly cozy, and it should be. It's filled with all kinds of weird decorating choices, strange quarter wall with a table behind it right in front of the entrance. An electric wall fireplace that was turned on on a mild-warm early summer afternoon. Even the giant sign with the restaurant's name on it was weirdly distracting. Then, in the middle of dinner they set an employee up at the table next to us to sort through the cutlery. Really, really weird choice. We felt like we were eating in the kitchen. Finally, they have handwritten (not very well handwritten) signs on the strange little quarter wall warning that if you use a credit card they will charge you an additional 4%. Stop it! It's 2023 just add it in to the cost of the food. It comes across as extremely passive aggressive. In summary, wonderful tasty food, presented well by friendly efficient staff ruined by the weird choices! We may be back, but probably not. read more

My favorite restaurant in town. Oscar and his well-trained team are always there to be sure everyone is happy. The food is high-end Mexican fusion that you won't get anywhere else. I've tried many dishes and have never been disappointed. But the El Patron chile relleno is last meal worthy and my go-to meal. I highly recommend the poppers which are not wrapped in bacon, but fresh and delish. The service was amazing they checked in to make sure we were satisfied and helped navigate us through the menu. They informed us on the spice levels for each dish, and recommended great dishes. Family owned and operated, every aspect of the business is run with ownership and pride, and it really shows in the quality of the food and service. The food. Don Q is amazing. Hands down my favorite dinner restaurant in Atascadero. The flavors are out of this world - like nothing I've had elsewhere. I'm a wimp with spice, so there's a couple dishes that are too caliente for me, but mostly I'll risk the heat when the flavors are this incredible. My favorites: Don Filipe Shrimp Enchiladas, Poblano Cream Soup (I could eat a gallon of this), the Blue Label Salmon and El Tesoro Shrimp. All spectacular. I also loved the Florentine Sandwich which got discontinued from the lunch menu. Hoping they bring it back some day. The ambience is very nice and the service is good but don't expect things to be as you may be used to. For example, my husband ordered a mole sauce dish and instead of Molé the sauce was made with beans. It was different, but not in a good way. I had the Kraken Chile Rellano and it was tasty. It had nice squash base and not too much cheese with a nice lighter traditional sauce. We will return to try some of their other dishes. You may want to try happy hour as well. read more

Easily the best place to eat in Atascadero. Sitting down the decor seemed pretty basic the silverware seemed cheap and the cups are plastic. So at first impression I thought that the food was overpriced. First I was served my dinner salad and it was somewhat small but well plated. Happy with the leafy greens and variety of vegetables. Then my salmon showed up and was plated beautifully. I was not expecting such a beautiful plate in front of me. Salmon cooked to perfection laying on a bed of perfectly cooked asparagus covered any magical sauce of deliciousness. After the first bite I quickly changed my mind about the food prices. Worth every penny. I tried my wife's New York steak and it was cooked to a perfect medium rare and seasoned by a god. I didn't have time or room to even think about dessert. By far my favorite Mexican restaurant in Atascadero! It is hidden, and I think the location can turn people away, but it's important not to judge a book by its cover. Every single dish I have had here has been delicious! Customer service is always on point, and the servings are filling. The dinner menu is my favorite as there are obviously more options to choose from. Their ceviche is always delicious and taste fresh, and their poblano soup is spectacular! We are in the area for a few days on our way to L.A. (yuk) for Christmas. Got here this afternoon and really tired looking for close, simple, casual but good place. Saw the reviews and looked good so on spur of moment we went. SOOO glad. Simple place industrial/modern and very clean. Interesting menu - basically central/South American. They had sold out of mango ceviche so we had standard - pretty good. I had a t-bone with coffee rub and a pomegranate sauce - huge and outstanding, perfectly cooked to medium rare. Would have been 15 - 20 bucks more up the street. My wife had Pasilla chili relleno which she liked a lot (not up to her Mom's standards but none are). We'll be back and pretty soon you'll need reservations. read more

I ordered the Don Felipe Enchilada, and my wife had the Dom Perignon Chili Relleno. My enchilada was stuffed with shrimp, beautifully presented, topped with a creamy, tangy, spicy sauce, and very good. The taste actually conjured up memories of some time I spent in Cabo. It was authentic and exquisite. My wife's chili relleno was a thing of beauty. Fully stuffed with shrimp, coated in a thin crust, and topped with a drizzle of sauce. Many other food options, by the way. My wife and I just happened to be in the mood for some Latin American offerings. I almost got one of their pork chop meals. They seem to have a decent wine selection. Minimal beer selection. We ordered some margaritas, mine a standard lime, and my wife's was a mango. Our server was very attentive and friendly. The space is a bit on the small side, and in a pretty funky location, but personally those things are pretty peripheral when enjoying such good food and service. Can't wait to go back! read more
