Sad & Bad. Staying down the street at the Hilton Garden Inn, I asked the front desk to suggest a spot to walk to for dinner. So I can blame my very tepid New Orleans food experience on her. Walked in to find a group of waitresses gathered at the bar chit-chatting. Couldn't get their attention. Saw two people dressed all in black, the hostesses perhaps? Yes, but they took two passes to see me. This is starting to confirm that I am invisible! Finally get noticed and seated. I sit at the bar at the hostess suggestion as I'm alone here for dinner. The gaggle of waitresses continues to mull around and cackle...no one goes to tell the bar waitress she's got a customer. Everything continues in this way...I receive the blandest catfish dinner ever from the slowest waitress ever at way too high of a price for cardboard coated in cardboard served cold by slow moving cardboard. I'm sad that I wasted night one of a two night trip at Mulate's. read more

On a family trip to New Orleans We chose to dine at Mulate's, a wonderful restaurant with character in the heart of the city! If you want fine Cajun dining with Louisiana flare with dance hall ambiance you have met your destination. The staff was kind the music and food were great! It was cute to see families taking advantage of the dance floor and enjoying the restaurant. My son and my Mom whom I went with equally shared the same love for this venue. If I go back to New Orleans I would love to come back and try more entrees, like grilled seafood, salads and gumbo etc. read more

The decor, the music, and the general Mulates vibe saved our experience, because the food was mediocre to bad on our visit. The crawfish were almost too salty to eat. OMG...Lots of food that's pretty good. Fried chickenn wings were enough for a small country! We did the cajun platter with catfish frog legs and alligator...too much fried food. We ate lunch here and it was okay...not great by any means but decent. Their seafood gumbo is spicy but watery and filled with, what tasted like, frozen, rubbery shrimp. Disappointing for a New Orleans restaurant. My companions enjoyed their food, the shrimp bisque and a muffuletta. However, their mojitos tasted more like sweet sprite with mint than an actual mojito. Worst. Service is just ok. Everything was over did. Frm the liquor to the shrimp, to the water even. My friend ordered the perfect pear martini, it tasted like straight rubbing alcohol. Decent lunch spot near the convention center. Prices are a little high ($20 sandwiches) but they cater to the expense account crowd on business trips. The place is big and it's easy to get a table even for larger groups. I had the shrimp remoulade po'boy and it was good- lots of large shrimp. Food wasn't anything to write home about. Wait was an hour and place was packed. We kept being asked to wait in the back but there was no place to go. Went to the bar to get a drink one bartender explained she would take our order but then we had to move; no problem....the other bartender (dark black hair) came up and was flat out rude! "You can't wait here or can you not read?" Another party replied "no we can read the other bartender is getting us drinks and then we will move." Bartender "well obviously you can't read and need to be told again because you are still here!" Her rudeness was absolutely ridiculous! If we weren't with our children there would have been a scene with the manager called over to address her complete lack of customer service. This place is a noisy, overpriced tourist trap. Located near the convention center, most of the customers are convention attendees on per diem instead of paying out of pocket. All bowl of soups are double digits in price. None of the main entrees are under $20. Yes, all that for some country Louisiana (Cajun) cooking. Good typical Cajun / Creole food. Good drinks. This place gets packed in the evening but not so bad during the day. There is live music in the evening and they have a dance floor. Got in there right before the kitchen closed, but we were still served with a smile. I loved the shrimp pasta and a death by chocolate type dessert. Hubby got a fried every kind of seafood platter and liked most all of it. The crab cake in a crab shell was a little weird, since it was battered and fried, so you didn't know it was a hard shell. Had a fun time at Mulate's restaurant on Monday night. Ivan, our waiter, was attentive and very quick. The restaurant was partially filled - it's a huge venue. The band played half of the time we were there but there were only a few people (mostly little kids) dancing. The food was solid - ample quantities of crawfish and huge portions. The jambalaya was a little lackluster but the catfish with crayfish étouffée was delicious (try it blackened). I also loved the side dish of coleslaw - something I usually won't even touch. The prices were a little higher than at other restaurants, though. read more

Food is good. Grilled Seafood platter is our favorite. Good service. We mainly go here for the atmosphere. They have a Cajun band that plays every evening at 7, 7 days a week. The kids love it. They have a dance floor were couples can get up and dance. Fun times for families. read more

My daughter and I visited Mulate's about 10 years ago, we were in the area visiting Colleges and we were always talking about how good the food was. We almost missed out this time because of the star rating on Yelp. We debated for a short time but, decided that our previous experience could not have been a mistake. First let me say our waitress Mary was very attentive and very helpful. The dish that we both wanted because of our previous visit was the Jumbo Lump Crabmeat AuGratin, which is served as a complete meal. I wanted the Stuff Shrimp Platter and my daughter wanted the Tilapia Po 'Boy. Mary told us that we were ordering way too much food for the two of us because all of the portions were large. She then made a suggestion that got us everything that we wanted but, was arranged so that we didn't end up with three full plates. Everything was as good as we remembered, I wanted to extend our trip so that we could make a return visit before we left :) We were trying to time our meal so that we could also listen to the live Cajun Music but, we arrived a little too early and finished our meal before they started playing. Our very helpful waitress Mary, told us that we could come back and order a drink at the bar and move over to the seats by the dance floor. I'm glad we didn't let the star rating sway us, Mulate's is still on our list of places that we must eat at when visiting New Orleans! read more

Nice place! Was within walking distance of my hotel. Waitress was really nice. I was in the mood for a crab cake which they didn't have so I got some gumbo, a small cup. It was so good I got two. Our server took our drink order then quickly came back to take out order. I ordered a fried shrimp po boy. It comes with fries and coleslaw. I also had a cup of their seafood gumbo. The gumbo was a little on the watery side but flavorful. The po boy was served on a soft roll packed with popcorn shrimp. There was a generous helping of hot crispy fries.
