It's difficult to compare and review cajun/creole food after eating at Felix restaurant yesterday-it's just not fair. But what I can say is Mulate's is, it isn't authentic cajun and the place is a bit dirty. Had a long hair in my cocktail. Thank goodness I saw it as soon as the waiter place the glass in front of me. Most of the food is frozen. Same catfish we get in San Antonio TX. The crab claws are smallest I've seen- a bit like hermit crab claws. And finally the floors look like they haven't had a good scrub in months. So if you're starving and you're at the convention center, have at it! read more

Very convenient location to the convention center. Came in for dinner after the Realtor Expo and it was packed. Decided to eat at the bar and had to wait about 15 minutes to order a beer. Food has good seasoning but crawfish and shrimp seemed over cooked, a little too chewy. They do have a live Cajun band play and a few couples got up and danced. Food was alright but nothing to write home about. We ate fried gator bites and grilled gator bites. My cousin's plate was the grilled plate and most of his bites were the size of cashews. The price was horrible for the amount of food received, if you're going to charge that much give us a good size plate. Probably the fastest and most efficient service we've gotten in the whole city. Plenty of space and no wait. Solid Cajun dishes. Got grilled gator, boudin, and muffaletta. Gator was great. Muffaletta not quite the typical preparation and more of a panini but still tasty. Price was ok but a little more for not being in a main area. read more

I think Mulate's is very under appreciated on Yelp. I had a great time there. The food was delicious and well-seasoned, and the atmosphere was fun. This is the second time I was here in the past 5 days. It was very close to our hotel. I tried the crawfish étouffée the first time and I loved it. I took my husband back here so I can try it again. We also order smoke Cajun oyster as appetizer and rice/bean/sausage soup. The smoke Cajun oyster and crawfish étouffée might be too salty for some people (I love salty food but my husband thinks it's too salty). Boyfriend and I came here for our second dinner in New Orleans. We were actually heading somewhere else but this was along the way and we were impressed with the menu posted outside. There was a long wait for a Sunday. I think we waited for at least an hour. Boyfriend finally checked in and they told us they called my name already. They promptly seated us. Only thing prompt about the entire experience. Boyfriend ordered the gumbo cup. He was very impressed with the gumbo. We also ordered the catfish bites for an appetizer. They were cold and poorly seasoned but I ate because I was starving. The bites were surrounded by a pointless pile of lettuce. I don't want to be a diva but they charge a dollar for bread! It was nothing special. Appetizers took at least 25 minutes. Waiter recommended the red fish so that's what I went with. It was really good and seasoned well but took wayyyy too long. Boyfriend has the grilled blackened Seafood Platter. It was pretty good. Crawfish were great. Live band and the cutest old man dancing with anyone who had the courage. We enjoyed the entertainment & dancing, but did not like the food. Husband had the broiled seafood platter & I got the baby back ribs. Excellent restaurant and service. Josh was our waiter and did an excellent job making sure we were continuously supplied with food and drinks. I believe he was also serving four other tables but did not miss a beat. The restaurant manager was also excellent. One of Josh's table was in an area that was cooler like our table. The people were uncomfortable so Josh found his manager so they could move to a more comfortable table out of his area. This was the best restaurant we ate at in NOLA. Very disappointing. We were told this is a must when visiting New Orleans. I wish we hadn't wasted a meal here. This city has an abundance of amazing food eateries and we could have just about picked anywhere else and it would have been better than here. From the minute we walked in the host greeting us at the door couldn't care less if we we're there or not. Our waitress couldn't manage so much as a smile, but had plenty of time to chat and laugh with her fellow staff members. The food was overpriced, bland and shrimp was over cooked. Every time a friend tells me they are going to New Orleans and I recommend restaurants, I always end by telling them to avoid this restaurant. The people that work there are very friendly, the music is great. But it is unfortunately a tourist trap. The food is average, which is not a crime. What I can't excuse is the food poisoning I got after eating the red beans and rice with sausage. I was the only person in my party that ate that, and was the only person to get horribly ill the next morning. And no, I hadn't been drinking. Greeter and hostess were nice. Band was great. Food and drinks were overpriced for the "average" flavor. ourcwaitress either had to many tables or was just not good at keeping up. We waited quite a while for water, drinks, etc. AND they couldn't/wouldn't run our debit card. There wasn't any previous warning that they only accept credit cards or cash. That was the worst food ever for money we spend. No quality on the food and burned oil was used. The employee who brought food out later on catched him with putting his finger all the way in his mouth to clean his teeth. That was discuting to see while you know he is the one handle food. Please save your time and money! This is the first time I've given a review on a restaurant. My husband & I wanted to stop and take in some of New Orleans on our way out west. We were given Mulate's as a recommendation just like another reviewer was led. It was overpriced for what we received. The food was lukewarm. The calamari was very chewy, and most of it was just balls of fried flour with no calamari in it! The catfish was way too salty. For a $27 meal the portion was small. We could have overlooked the price if the meal would have been way better. The service & ice tea were good, but that's about it. New Orleans I'm sure has better food than this elsewhere! read more
