The wait was 45 minutes. My husband ordered the smoked oysters. The price was $13 and was only 8 oysters. Shells in the oysters. I ordered BBQ shrimp, the bbq shrimp at Dennie's is way better. We where sitting over 40 minutes and never received our other food. We canceled the order. read more

Took my 78 year old father there; he hadn't been to Mulate's in several years. Staff was friendly. But the place is more family style. The food was mediocre for the price. Got the blackened catfish with crawfish etouffee; had one tiny crawfish. We came in with a party of twelve having made our reservation a week or so beforehand. Like a few other people have said the food wasn't great. for the price, I was expecting a lot better experience and the food to be a lot better. Our waitress was rude and basically brought the food to our table and we didn't see her until the check came. They weren't able to take more than five cards but did not mention this to me when I made the reservation. The coke was $4 and that is a little crazy to me. We checked into our hotel in the Warehouse District and Mulate's was our place to eat for the night after traveling on the road for hours. While we were hoping to get some good New Orleans food. That wasn't the case here. We sent the jambalaya back- dried rice with horrible tasting over-cooked sausage (no shrimp or chicken). Their wings had no seasoning at all. The fried shrimp platter was the only thing good. Top shelf margarita $13 and you couldn't taste the liquor. We spent $72 (tip included) and this place wasn't worth it. Mulates made a liar out of me. I always said bad restaurants couldn't survive in NOLA - the competition was just too stiff. Then I went to Mulates. The band was great. The food, with the exception of the bread pudding, was inedible - crap on a plate. There was no seafood to be found in the thin, bland gumbo. So we were a party of 9 and got seated right away on a Sunday evening. I ordered the fried catfish and fried shrimp to share with my aunt. Was very good n shrimp were big n plump. The coleslaw on the other hand was room temp and not good at all. My cousin ordered the jambalaya and he said it was the best he ever had. Only complaints were prices were high and our waiter was not very good only came by 3 times in the 2 hrs we were there. We had to keep asking other staff for help music was great. Very disappointed...incredibly small portions of food that tasted old, not fresh...and for the price, certainly expected something better. Our hotel TV was running commercials of this place that made it look like a great place to go but it was not. Service was mediocre, at best. I would definitely not go again and absolutely do not recommend, especially with all the wonderful food choices in NOLA. After having "dinner" here, we needed to go to another restaurant to eat because there was so little food served. The food was excellent and would rate 4 stars, but the service was poor and brings the whole experience down. I told the waiter we had a $20 gift certificate before we ordered and he asked to see it before taking our order. I wondered if us having a gift certificate had anything to do with the poor service we received. I sincerely hope not, since the GC only covered the price of our two cocktails. We started with the fried alligator app and cajun bloody mary's. My BF had never tried alligator before and really enjoyed it. The bloody mary's were average. I ordered the crabmeat au gratin and my BF had the crab combo which included a crab cake, stuffed crab, crab fingers and a small portion of au gratin. The food was all excellent! We saw the waiter three times during our entire meal. He took our drink order, brought the drinks and took our order and someone else dropped off our food. We didn't see him again until he brought our bill. My BF had to flag someone down to get a refill on our water and I never did get the 2nd cocktail that I wanted. The music was exactly what I was hoping to hear and I loved watching the old guy in the lobster Hawaiian Shirt skip across the dance floor. He even asked my date while I went to the washroom-man was he smooth. I also enjoyed my Cajun sampler. Eating good food watching people have a good time was what this night was for us. Often times, after a big meal, I experience some sort of feeling of regret. That's not always a bad thing, I could regret having eaten too much bread before a killer entree, or my liver could express regret at that one extra bourbon on the way out. Those types of regret, I can live with. Dinner at Mulates, however, was regretful all around, and not in a pleasant way. We sought out Mulates on a recommendation of the concierge at our hotel as a place to see Cajun music in downtown NOLA. There was music, sure, but even if the musicians acted as if they cared even a little bit, it wouldn't have been enough to redeem the overpriced, underflavored, excessively greasy food. We got a better meal (of similar cuisine) and better cocktails for half the price at Coops on Decatur two nights prior and at several other places throughout the duration of our stay. If you're just getting off the cruise ship and have money to blow on unexciting food near the port, go for it, otherwise don't waste your meal or your money here. read more

Some of Mulate's reviews are not particularly stellar, but I enjoyed it! I went with my mom while on vacation. She doesn't particularly like spicy food, and nothing on the menu is spicy unless you request it to be. I suppose this may take some of the authenticity out of the food, but is good for those who still want a little taste of what Cajun food is like. The venue is very large with a bar, dance floor and stage. A band was performing when I was there which was very entertaining. The good wasn't anything amazing, but overall good casual dining. Who could have predicted that across the street from a convention center exists a truly great restaurant. Went there for about my 8th time last night and had a cup each of the gumbo, rice and beans and the shrimp etoufee. All three were out of this world. I added a grilled sausage that was superb.
