Neptune's really holds up to its reputation. I came here on a Sunday morning, 30 minutes before its opening. I would highly advise coming here 30-40 min before it opens. By the time you hit the 20 min mark before it opens, the line hits the corner. If you don't make first wave, wait will be an hour. By the time we left, wait was quoted 2-3 hours. The wait is worth it though for that lobster roll. My boyfriend and I started with a dozen oysters and 2 cherry stone clams. I wanted to try the cherry stone clams because it seemed to be very popular. It was a bit fishier than I would like it but it had plenty of substance. Their oysters were fresh and delicious. Great with their cocktail sauce. We didn't have to wait long for the platter. What was best was that Neptune's provides a list of the oysters they are offering along with a description of how each tastes. It was very helpful in figuring out what we were looking for. As for the lobster roll, I got the hot butter lobster roll. The lobster was perfectly poached. There was so much! And drenched in delicious better. The bread was great. It wasn't too much that it overpowered the lobster, or maybe because there was just so much lobster it never could have overpowered it. So good! Their fries were just as delicious. Nice and simple, salty and deliciously fried. I had to stop myself from annihilating all the fries. Overall, go early and eat everything. YUMMMM read more

Came here for my 1 day trip ito Boston. Came here to line up 30 min before they were open and luckily we did since the outdoor seatings get taken pretty quickly. We sat outside since it was a pretty nice day out. We ordered the lobster roll and a few oysters. We were super excited for the rolls but were left with a bit of disappointment. It was seasoned well, but it was slightly overcooked and a bit dry. On the other hand I really enjoyed the oysters. They were super fresh and were cleaned with no sand bits on the shells. I mean wow. I didn't do any research about this place as I was visiting Boston for a short time for work but my friend found this place on yelp. We came right after work around 5:45 and thankfully were able to get a seat for 2 at the bar. However right after we sat, a line formed outside. The food was absolutely amazing. I got 3 oysters which I don't even remember the names but they were incredibly fresh and delicious. I also got the lobster roll with hot butter and fries which was AMAZING. The lobster was plentiful and incredibly tender and covered with the perfect amount of melted butter. The bun was soft but incredibly sturdy (as the butter was soaking the bottom of the bun). Although it said the place was pricey, I knew we had to give it a try. We came in and there was a decent wait but we got a table pretty quickly. We ordered the squid ink risotto, N.O.B. clambake, neptune johnnycake, and a variety of oysters. The oyster were incredible fresh and flavorful and they had a great selection to choose from. The squid ink risotto was very rich with great flavors to combine with the lobster. The N.O.B. clambake was basically a whole lobster with corn and clams on the side. The sauce surrounding it with the fresh seafood definitely hit the spot. The johnny cake was the first johnny cake that I've ever tried. It was very interesting how the caviar, bluefish, and johnny cake went together. I would recommend this place just for the variety of oysters and how good they are. Definitely knew that if I were to get a lobster roll while visiting Boston, it would be from here. Luckily since I was eating alone, my wait ended up only being 35 minutes. They call you when your table is almost ready and give you ten minutes to head back (I was checking out Freedom Trail spots). I got a nice middle seat at the bar! Ordered from their raw bar which is nice because they give you a paper menu with taste notes about each oyster! Also ordered a beer and a hot lobster roll. The couple next to me ordered both a hot and cold lobster roll and they said they preferred the hot one way better. The lobster on a buttered roll was the best I've ever had! Best seafood I have tried in the city, especially the lobster roll! The food alone is EASILY a 10/10. We had to stand outside in the blistering cold for an hour waiting to be seated since it is a small restaurant and no space to wait indoors. The food itself is definitely worth the wait, although that cold was a bit painful on a 20 degree day. The only thing about the dining experience that I disliked was the fact that you are sat at the same table as random strangers and it makes for a bit of an awkward time when you want to get comfortable and talk with those you came with. I'm not sure if they offer takeout but that is how I would order in the future. Maybe even sit at the bar, but the tables were uncomfortable. read more

Let me preface this by saying my husband doesn't have the patience to wait for a table more than 10 minutes but the Yelp reviews convinced him that it would be worth the wait. We waited for an hour at a bar down the street (they call your cell when your table is ready) and my husband said it was worth the wait! This place is SO GOOD!!!! We had the best meal while in Boston here and will definitely come back here the next time we are here. After coming here twice in the past year, I can firmly say that it's very overrated. :// I walked in last night at around 8pm, and awkwardly waited 20 minutes in the small entryway for someone to put my name down. We were quoted an hour and 15 minute wait, so we walked around the neighborhood and got some pastries and snacks. Not a big deal, I don't care about long waits, as long as the food is good. The only good part of our experience here was that we were called 40 minutes in and were seated promptly once we got in. We started out with the uni toast -- big mistake. No uni taste, and it honestly tasted like VERYY heavily buttered and salted toast. I couldn't finish my piece because it was so oily and salty. We also got most of their oysters (all except 4). Although they tasted pretty fresh, there wasn't too much variety in the taste. For some reason, they were all extremely salty. Even the Kumamoto and Kusshi oysters that I normally love for their sweetness were...salty. B&G is the way to go if you're craving oysters in the area. The best part of our food was the lobster roll. It's pretty large with a nicely buttered bun and tasty fries. However, I can easily get a similar/better lobster roll elsewhere without the line and high price. Tried the Neptune Pearl, East Cape, and Beausoleil oysters. They're supposed to have a sweet buttery flavor, nutty flavor, and champagne flavor (respectively), according to the menu describing each kind. It was super fun trying different kinds of oysters from all over the place and comparing them. I also got the bluefin crudo (I was expecting more than 4 pieces, but bluefin can be expensive) and my friend got the Neptune burger. A tourist attraction as much as an excellent restaurant. Definitely one of the smallest places I've been to but it's also easy to see once you've tasted the food why it likely stays busy often. Love the fresh rotating oyster selection (come early though, as they do run out of them), and the varied menu that supports it. Drink menu is pretty robust as well and I was pretty impressed w/all the draft and bottle offerings. Friend and I were fortunate enough to stumble in on a Sunday night and got sat almost immediately at 2 bar seats. We split a dozen oysters, sipped on beer and wine, and then split a whole fish and some mussels. Everything tasted fantastic but the mussels! hands down the best broth I've ever had and I was literally downing it w/a spoon near the end. I found this place on yelp and saw the great reviews and had to try out their lobster roll. The ambiance and decor is beautiful. I sat at the white marble bar that had two amazing servers. She took my order right away and I was in and out in less than 30 minutes. As for my lobster roll I was a little disappointed. I got the hot lobster roll with butter. Most of the sandwich was knuckle meat. I asked for a little mayo and lemon to help give it a little kick. The lobster roll was $39.00 and not worth the amount. This was my last food stop in Boston back in Dec. I wanted to save the best for last and this highly rated seafood landmark joint did not disappoint. It's a small restaurant with an old-school vibe. You can't pass by the storefront without noticing the enticing oysters on display. And this was the reason why I came here. This place was oyster paradise! They have a variety of oysters to choose from. From small to large, salty to sweet, local to out of state or country. Just select quantity from the printed oyster menu, hand it over then walla! Freshly shucked morsels before your eyes. My favorite were the Cuttyhunk, MA oysters. They were plumped and buttery. Also ordered a lobster bisque. It was silky, rich with shreds of lobster meat. Just heaven :) The main menu was quite pricey but I think it's worth it. The quality of food and friendly neighborhood service are 2 enough reasons to splurge a little. read more

*** 4.5 Stars *** Everything that we had at Neptune Oyster was delicious, but surprisingly I wasn't blown away by the lobster roll, but rather by everything else. Was it worth the 3+ hour wait (granted at 6 pm on a Saturday night)? It was for the one time, but it's not something that I'd do very often (or ever) so I have to knock it down half a star for that. Note: they take your phone number and call you when your table is ready, so you aren't just waiting around for your table to be ready. This makes a huge difference, because I definitely don't think it would be worth standing outside in the cold for three hours for, but as is, it was worth it since we got to wander around the North End and Faneuil Hall while we waited. The estimated wait time is just that - there is no way for them to predict how long people will linger at their table. I have a theory that the longer people wait to get their table, the longer they linger (on principle) and the worse the wait gets. We, for example, were not originally planning to get appetizers, but did just because we had waited so long we felt we had to try more things (and glad we did!). As for the food.... MUSSELS - This was my favorite item of the night, hands down. The sauce was just to die for and it makes me wonder if I should have ordered the cioppino as my main. Simply delicious. NEPTUNE JOHNNY CAKE - I was skeptical about this, but it seemed so interesting that I wanted to try it. I was pleasantly surprised how much I liked it. Definitely worth trying... I recommend sharing it with the table as it's a bit sweet to eat too much of (they actually brought it out with a candle to the people next to us celebrating a birthday). SCALLOPS - Probably the best scallops I've ever had. There are only 4, but they are hearty and delicious. MAINE LOBSTER ROLL (Hot) - Actually my least favorite item, although still great, and definitely ranks up there with one of the better lobster rolls I've ever had, but maybe my expectations were just too high. I don't really think it's overpriced given how much lobster there is in this thing. The quality of the lobster itself is probably what makes this such a must get item, but in terms of the bun and the sandwich itself I (dare I say), I wasn't blown away. You guys. I can't with this place. I had the best lobster roll of my life! I've had lobster rolls in other places before but none can compare to Neptune Oyster's. This was my favorite meal out of my entire trip to Boston. We ordered the lobster roll with butter and fries and the Johnnycake. That lobster roll though--it has the biggest pieces of lobster sandwiched between a perfectly soft brioche bun. My mouth is watering as I'm reminiscing on the taste of that lobster roll. Also wow the fries are delicious! I don't know what they do differently about their fries but so good. Lastly the Johnnycake is a dish that I think everyone should try at least once. First trip to boston so we had to come visit the famous Neptune Oyster. VERY limited seating so I recommend to be there right when they open. We ordered stone crab claws, a cold lobster roll, and clam chowder. Everything was good. Not wow, but good. The clam chowder was a bit on the salty side. More potato than clams in the chowder. Grabbed a late lunch at Neptune Oyster on Friday afternoon. No doubt about the quality of their raw seafood, however I found some dishes inconsistent and felt overwhelmed in the tight space. Quality: The highlight of our meal was right at the start, the tremendous Oyster selection. I really appreciated the thorough and accurate taste descriptions and loved each one I tried. Unfortunately, the rest of the meal was pretty inconsistent. The Fluke Crudo was okay, though the fruit pairing didn't mesh as well as I hoped. The Maine Peekytoe Crab Salad was bright and tasty, something I was definitely order again. The Wellfleet Clam Chowder was not my favorite, I like a thicker chowder, and was not thrilled about the limited seafood in it. The Neptune Johnnycake, which is a signature of the menu, didn't work for me. Too sweet, to the point it overwhelmed the seafood items. The Maine Lobster Roll was a great way to end, very delicious and a ton of lobster on it. Quantity: I felt the portions were pretty generous for a high-quality fresh seafood . Currently they have plexiglass up between tables, to make the closeness of guests seem more reasonable. However, I felt like I was packed in and unable to move throughout the meal. With the bustling nature of small dishes, it was chaos inside and not my favorite dining experience. Crowd: They don't take advance reservations, so popular days it can be a long wait. We came for a late weekday lunch, and were lucky to be seated almost immediately. Service: The staff seemed overwhelmed, and the tight quarters did not make it any easier. It led to erratic pacing, tables stuffed with too many dishes, and items falling. This is not on the staff, but on the setup. It wasn't a great day for me at Neptune Oyster, sad for my first time. Some of it was on me, I'm sure, as it was a very rainy day and we needed to wait outside in the rain for 30 minutes since it's so small. I found the oysters tasteless, the chowder too runny, and the lobster tacos interesting but too spicy to finish. We sat at the crowded bar, which is also a choice I don't love. I don't know if it's possible to go at a non-busy time, but that's more my speed. I'm sure the quality of everything was high, but my style is more No Name or Frenchie's. This is another first for me. Overall, as the name of the business says, go for the oysters. It's a small place with very little seating so you'll need to wait in line, outside. The service was quick though. My wife had the scallops and the lobster tacos. I had the clam chowder and many oysters. The scallops were small but had good flavor. The lobster tacos had a spice to it that while I liked, felt like a hair too much and I like spicy food. I believe it was just too much for the lobster. The chowder was, unfortunately, not my favorite. This isn't your typical creamy heavy chowder. It has almost a fresh taste to it and the clams, at least to me, felt a little chewy. I did not really enjoy my experience at Neptune Oyster at all. The layout of the restaurant is extremely cramped and my party of 3 had to share a table with another group which was extremely awkward. Also, I found one of the waitresses to be extremely rude so that made the experience even more undesirable. I do find the food to be overpriced for no reason. The oyster were delicious but everything else we ate on the menu was very average and bland: the burger as well as many of the appetizers. I was in the mood for a nice meal before I left the boston area. I ended up finding Neptune oyster. For such awesome food the place is small (but pretty). Imagine a bar on your right with a nice big mirror with oysters written on it. A few tables on your left. . .and that is about it. Yet don't let the size fool you. This was the best lobster roll and oysters I've found in ages. They even let me do a salad instead of fries (for a small up-charge). This is mostly a wine place (and I found the craft beer selection a little lacking but there were some interesting choices. . .such as a slightly sour cider). Came here on a weekday for lunch around 1130 for a party of two, and to no surprise the restaurant was already packed. We got lucky and were seated within 5 min of arrival as we were the first in line. Hyped about this place, we knew we had to get the lobster roll. We also split the Neptune Burger for taste, and a couple of oysters as well. The highlight of course, was the lobster roll, which was nicely buttered, chewy, and flavorful. The only slight note is that the butter dripped all the way to the bottom as opposed to spread across evenly so the tasting experience was a bit uneven. The fries were a great addition as well. The oysters were also very fresh and juicy. The Neptune Burger added a nice solid taste to the seafood experience. Overall, pleased with the food - left very satisfied!
