Oyster bar with very tight squeezing seats. Can see the shucker shucking oysters in front of the store. Only came for oysters and heard they were fresh! They have a list of the oysters available and come with an accurate tasting profile to them. We got the Neptune pearl, katama bay, unicorn, and beausoleli. The Neptune pearl was our favorite due to the sweet butter finish. We did prefer the medium salt oysters. The razor clam was also amazing. The razor clam casino came with small bacon pieces, chili oil, and parsley. The clam was cut into pieces paired with a tasty oil. Place is very busy and crowded. Came at an off peak hour and didn't wait long. Quick bite for some oysters.
The oysters were fantastic - such a big variety to try and so fun. Service was great. Line was pretty long on a week night around 6:30pm, we waited about 45 min in line. I heard there was no line around 6pm that day. Other dishes ordered: Spanish octopus: it looked fabulous, but flavor profile was not my favorite. The sauce was very buttery/oily but lacked depth in flavor imo. It was greasy, mushy and bland at the same time. Octopus itself was pretty good. Lobster pasta: enjoyable overall but the lobster tasted rubbery/overcooked. It might be better if they just toss the lobsters in towards the end instead of cooking it so much. The lobster meat portion was very generous. Overall, I was not disappointed, but also I wasn't super impressed.
A Boston must-try, Neptune's is a tiny restaurant (like, 20-25 people max seating) that will very likely have a line when you arrive. Unless you wanna wait an hour or so, it's best to arrive 30min before they open to beat the rush. It's incredibly cramped and rushed inside, and you may need to share a table with others if you're a smaller party. Food is quite pricey but well worth it. We ordered the oysters (they've got a variety so you can choose), clam chowder, lobster roll, cioppino, and johnnycake. Oysters were fine, but the clam chowder was absolutely dismal. Not sure what happened, especially since it's so highly rated, but it was extremely watery and almost completely unseasoned. It could've definitely used salt at the very least. If I didn't know it was from Neptune, I'd have given it a 2/10. To my relief, the lobster roll was the total opposite. Succulent, juicy, heavenly. It was like being in Maine. The cioppino was also very good. The Johnnycake was an interesting but fun way to end the meal. It's a sweet pancake-like cornmeal covered in a syrupy glaze and topped with smoked bluefish paste, crème fraiche and caviar. I've never had anything like it. Nothing was super overpriced, but I personally prefer next door (Paulini's), which is much cheaper and while it isn't as good, it also doesn't require waiting in an hour in line. However, I think Neptune's is definitely worth a try as long as you're willing to wait in line.
I still love this place! Cash only! I always order their crudo as it's rotational. Their warm lobster roll is out of this world and their oysters are always fresh! They didn't have fresh uni this time, maybe next time. If I'm visiting Boston, this is a must visit location for me.
The service was okay and the food was solid. I got the lobster roll and fries and the MP at the time was $43. I thought it was good, but definitely not worth the price. Overall I probably wouldn't recommend coming here.
I visited Neptune Oyster on a Tuesday and found a line out the door, as expected. I thought the wait was just to put my name down, but the hostess came by asking everyone for the size of their party. Because I was a solo diner, I was able to skip the entire line and got seated at the bar right away! The restaurant was small and cozy, with a classic New England vibe. Sitting at the bar was awesome, because I had a front-row seat to watch oyster shucking. I was given a little checklist with the raw bar offerings, and chose one of each of the east coast oyster varieties (9 in total). I don't have a refined palate for oysters, so I can't say I fully grasped the listed tasting notes, but all 9 were fresh and delicious! I also got the hot Maine Lobster Roll, which was phenomenal. I loved the generous heaps of lobster and warm buttered bun. Overall, Neptune Oyster was a pricey dinner for one, but a fantastic experience!
Very yummy seafood! We waited about 45 min at 5 pm on a Sunday evening (holiday weekend). It was very cozy in there and we shared a table with other people but we didn't mind. We ordered a bunch of raw oysters, a lobster roll, a cioppino with lobster on top, and a burger (my husband wanted to try it). The oysters were delicious and the lobster on the roll and in the cioppino was excellent. My favorite dish was the cioppino - what a delicious variety of seafood and so filling too!!
Food: Mussels and the lobster spaghetti were 11/10, no complaints! The burgers also looked phenomenal. Service: I found some of the waitstaff to be overly aggressive. While I understand the restaurant is small, crowded, and very busy, being told to move and move my bag could've been said to me in a much nicer way.
There was already a short line outside Neptune Oyster even before they opened on a Tuesday--so I was glad I arrived early! I started with littleneck clams and a glass of Lambrusco, then followed with the lobster roll--because it just felt mandatory while in Boston. It was a generous heap of buttered lobster on a pillow-soft brioche. There was so much lobster, I needed a knife and fork to tackle it. At $43, it's definitely a splurge, but absolutely worth it. Every dish I saw pass by looked incredible. I almost wished I had shared the roll so I could try more of the menu.
Worth the wait! Every time I go to Boston, I try to make a visit to Neptune. They don't take reservations and there is always a line but it moves quickly. Inside is cozy with only a few booths and bar seating. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable on their menus. I went on Sunday this time when they had lobster tacos as the special of the day, so I had to try and was not disappointed. There was so much lobster in each of the tacos!! The oysters were fantastic as well.
This place is in the top 10 restaurants we have ever been a patron at. The service is always top notch, the servers are friendly, informative and knowledgeable. The small space is cozy without feeling crowded and the food is always amazing. We never miss a chance to stop here when we are in Boston. 11 outta 10 recommend. The prices may seem a little scary at first but the quality and presentation warrants them. Do not skip a stop here.
Long line, long wait, limited seating. We came after 6pm and there were already about 20 people in line on a weekday. Food was pretty good but prices were a bit outrageous, especially the daily specials. Perhaps that is why prices were not listed for them. Noise level and service were typical of a smaller but busy restaurant.

Neptune Oyster lives up to the hype! Hands down, Neptune has the best lobster roll in Boston. During my travels, I had a total of 7 lobster rolls of the hot and cold variety. The general consensus of my group was that nothing surpasses Neptune's taste and presentation. Trust me, it's worth the wait. Also, oysters were good. I approve. read more

Staff is really nice and friendly. We got oysters picked by our waitress and 2 hot lobster rolls. They give you a LOT of lobster, it's amazing. We went an hour before opening and the line of people getting long so make sure you go wait before opening time! read more

This is one of the best meals we had in Boston. Since we arrived at 3:00 pm on a weekday, we were seated right away. We started with raw oysters which were very fresh and a bit salty which is typical of local oysters here. Lobster rolls in hot butter was heavenly. Spanish octopus was very tender and well seasoned. Cioppino and uni pasta were also excellent. Lastly, the raw scallop crudo was very refreshing. Overall, worth the expensive final bill of $175. read more

I was seated around 4:30pm on a Saturday and it was about a 2 hour wait. You have to wait for the waitress/hostess to put your name down. They do not allow you to wait inside as it is a fire hazard since the restaurant is small. I was actually in the process of doing the freedom trail nearby. I was able to call the restaurant to check on the waitlist, to make sure I would make it back time. I initially missed the first phone call and I called back 10 minutes later and they were still able to accommodate my date and I! The service was great, and the lobster roll and oysters were really good. The market price was $32 for the lobster roll and the oysters were about $2.50-3 a piece for a small, medium and large (we choose the cheapest). We also ordered a glass of white and rosé. If I ever get a chance to visit Boston again, I would want to try the seafood stew. read more
Overrated lobster rolls. I guess we have the best lobster rolls back in Malibu, CA! We stood in line for almost 2 hours to know what the hype is for this restaurant. Very few movements in line. I found it very unorganized here and it definitely was not worth the time. They don't accept online orders for lobster rolls and they don't offer takeout order for the rolls as well...Once we finally got in, you definitely feel the New England presence and I liked it. It was cramp and felt a little antique inside with everyone enjoying their time. I had gotten the cold lobster rolls with fries. Very basic lobster roll. The bread could have been more soft as it was a little tough. They did provide a generous amount of lobster on the roll. The French fries was really good with this vinaigrette ranch sauce (upon request). To note, the bartender serving us was very very awkward. She gave weird looks and we felt the passive aggressiveness. Whenever we had asked for something or had a question, she always made it awkward. You don't realize how unpleasant it was to ask for a different dip sauce as I am not a fan of ketchup. Not sure what her problem was, but it was a very uncomfortable situation when dining here...other than that other staff was greeting well and smiling but avoid the female bartender. This review could've easily been 3-4 stars but the experience here was whack. read more

This place definitely deserves all the hype it gets. Went over and put my name in...was quoted 1.5/2 hours. Claimed that a phone call would be made when the table was ready. Like normal once 2 hours hit...I thought did she write my number down wrong. I went back to get an update on where I was on the list...after waiting 25 mins to talk to the lady with the list. She refused to talk to anyone until it was convenient for her. The bartender said she was the only one with the list. Its one thing if I asked every 15 mins, but it had been 2 hours and just wanted to get an update. It was rude to ignore me and there was actually 3 other couples trying to get an update since it was past their quoted time. Food was so good though. Makes for the hiccup in trying to get update fade. Waited a total of 2.5 hours. Got the octopus app. So so good. Got the lobster broil and lobster roll. Both were amazing. I got a side salad instead of fries and the house dressing was so delicious. The meal was spectacular. Service was good, but nothing to get excited about. I've never waited in line before a restaurant opened, but this was totally worth it and probably a good idea since it gets packed so fast. There isn't much seating, but I was able to get in with the first wave of the crowd. While waiting outside, I literally saw them roll in the seafood, as if they just jumped out of the waters, into the boat, and right to the restaurant. I was bringing my friend around, who's never been to Boston. So we definitely had to get the top two things Boston is known for: lobster roll and clam chowder. So we ordered the clam chowder, hot lobster roll, and johnnycake. I can say this is the best clam chowder and the best lobster roll I've ever had! Clam Chowder (5/5) - The clam chowder isn't your normal chowder, it's not thick-like. It's a very thin soup-like chowder. You can really taste the freshness from the clams. The potatoes were cooked perfectly and there were little bits of celery. Everything about it was amazing! Hot Lobster Roll (5/5) - Wow! This roll was loaded with lobster, that buttery goodness! The bun was not soggy, it was nicely toasted. The lobster tasted so fresh! I took small bites because I wanted to savor it. I had the option to choose fries or salad with my roll, I chose fries. The fries were good. Johnnycake (4.5/5) - I've never tried something like this. It was sweet from the honey syrup and savory from the smoked bluefin fish with caviar on top. The pancake itself was fluffy with crunch. Each bite I put a little bit of everything. It was good, but this might not be for everyone. Needless to say, I'll be back! _______________________________________________ 5 Stars (YES) - Absolutely the best! It was perfect! I would come back every day if I could! 4 Stars (Good) - It was great! I would come back occasionally. 3 Stars (Okay) - Things were average, but I've had better. Came here for a business trip and ate lobster everyday. This was my favorite spot for the best lobster roll. The lobster is tender, sweet and they give you lots of it. The roll was hot, buttered, crispy, and soft. Will definitely come here again on my next visit. read more
Everybody knows that Neptune is outstanding and as good as it gets in Boston when it comes to fresh, quality seafood. Get the cold lobster roll with a glass of rose and it's impossible to be disappointed. The grilled brioche bun is so tasty and it's loaded with tons of lobster meat, lightly coated in mayo. The only bad part: be prepared to wait hours to get into this little gem of a restaurant. read more

Definitely plan to wait in line to put your name in and then come back in a few hours for your table. It's very small inside and gets crazy so I'd recommend stopping back in to check where your name is on the list to move things along. We sat at the bar and had great service. The fluke crudo was delicious and the white peaches added the perfect touch of sweetness. The octopus was very flavorful and cooked perfectly. The special that night was lobster burrata and it was amazing - the waiter recommended that over the lobster roll. Left feeling very full but feeling like the wait was well worth it! read more

I've tried Neptune oysters twice now, both just as an after dinner snack/dessert because the wait was so long. The first time coming was on a Saturday night and the wait was 3 hours. We put our names down (you don't have to stay there and wait, they'll call you) and decided to go somewhere else to eat since we were already pretty hungry. We ended up eating at giacomos nearby and 3 hours later, they Neptune oysters finally called. (At least they're accurate with their time estimates!) we went to neptune's to get oysters only since we were already extremely stuffed from pasta. The second time I went was a Monday night and the wait was 1.5 hrs. Again we decided to eat somewhere else first and then Neptune called so we came after dinner and got oysters again. The oysters here are good and pretty fresh. I gave it 4 stars and not 5 because it isn't the best I've had. I liked the oysters from row 34 and island creek better. My only complaint is that I need to occasionally spit out pieces of shells as I am eating which I did not have to do in other places. One thing I loved was that they describe the oysters on the ordering sheet so you know exactly which ones you would like instead of having to ask the waiter. I am not an oyster expert so this was super helpful! read more
Tip: put your name down about two hours before when you actually wanted to eat. That's about the average wait time so explore the north end, lots of bars around the area. The place is tiny and it's harder to get a table for a larger party, I would suggest 2-4 people at most. You might also be sitting elbow to elbow to the party next to you and it's quite noisy. But the oyster selections and even the food is pretty good, if you have stuff to do to kill time while waiting for your table otherwise there are definitely other restaurants that are comparable in food but not as long of a wait. I definitely would recommend just to be able to see what this amazing restaurant has to offer. Efficient staff, literally one waitress and waiter attending to the tables, but they're quick, friendly, and patient. They have a extensive wine menu with options for a glass or by the bottle and a good oyster selection. We pretty much tried all the oysters on the list, all very fresh. Since we ate at a bar during our 2.5 hour wait and we just really wanted the oysters we just got the octopus for the appetizer, great flavors and the cioppino, which was amazing. We added lobster so it was a additional $10 to the $31 original price, a little steep for a entree but it was loaded with a variety seafood, you have mussels, clams, shrimp, grilled fish and then the lobster. The stew was slightly spicy which added great kick to each spoonful, I absolutely loved it, we drank that entire bowl clean. There's so many other food items I would love to try so there will definitely be a next time as the wait really isn't too bad if you have go grab a drink or two or five at a nearby bar. read more

Small space, super crowded, longest wait ever but pretty worth it! We were able to walk all the way to Bunker Hill, up the tower and down, and back while waiting for our reservation. Since the space is really small, and they have a bar too, all the tables are right up against each other. There was one strip running against the wall as a seating booth for everybody. Food was great! We got a Triton platter and that was delicious. This place has THE BEST lobster rolls in town. We were also about to try the lobster tacos that day but those weren't as great as the lobster roll. I will definitely come back next time I'm in Boston and also remember to make a reservation ahead of time from now on! read more

Commendable buttery lobster roll but maybe choice of bread/rolls should be an option. Oysters are not consistently fat and therefore needs improvement. Pan seared Seabass looks and taste delicious, Spanish Octopus is succulently tender and juicy, clam chowder is watered down. read more

Location: very easy to find, very close to Boston Public Market, few minutes of walk distance of the green line. GET HERE EARLY to get a table. They open at 11:30am and we arrived at 11:20, already a long line. Had to wait 1 hour:( food: we ordered both the hot and cold lobster roll, which was delicious. Large portion and was able to change the fries to salad:) the roll was grilled just right, lobster was well seasoned and fresh. The only complaint I have would be that there were mini lobster shells in my cold lobster rolls. We ordered every oyster that was on the menu, and liked most of them, especially the Cotuit one. Lastly, we ordered their burger with fried oysters, it was very dry beef. Why did we order burger at the seafood place? Service: our server was very nice and attentive. Price: the lobster roll was $31 when we order it, it's seasonal price. Not too bad. Oysters ranged $2.90 to $3.50 each. Overall: definitely worth the try and wait. read more

My mom and I came to Boston for a fun weekend trip and made Neptune Oyster our first stop due to all the great reviews and recommendations on multiple sites. Waited about an hour for seats; they call 10 min beforehand so we walked around North End a bit. I wasn't a big fan of being placed at the end of the bar with the staff walking back and forth behind us the whole time, but the food made up for it. We ordered oysters (obviously), P.E.I mussels, and the hot lobster roll with a salad. Oysters were incredibly fresh and they have a wide selection. Mussels were super tasty with fresh basil. And the lobster roll by far was the best we had in Boston. The roll itself with butter I think makes the lobster roll - hot is the way to go. Packed with meat, we thought it was well worth the price. My only issue was the server that we had - she seemed super friendly to the other customers but somewhat short with us from the beginning. To me, service is a huge part of the dining experience, which is why I knocked off a star. If service didn't matter, this place would hands down be a 5 because the food was delicious. read more
When you have to get in line 40 minutes before the restaurant opens it's either two things.. a yuppie trend or really damn good food. Proud to say this was just really damn good food. The menu is simple with a sea minded theme. I had the clam chowder and it was absolutely one of the best chowders I've ever had! It was light, creamy and fresh. Tons of fresh clams you want to keep eating it all day. Actually while waiting in line we saw the guy dragging in two creates full of fresh seafood that probably came from the farmers Mary down the street. The place is small but it's prefect for a beautiful lunch.. Now let's talk about Lobster roll.. the roll is beautifully toasted and loaded with tons of buttery lobster a mix of claw and tail prefectly cooked. Every bite was a pillow of buttery goodness. Then the best part is once you get down to the bottom there's a pool of butter waiting for you.. again it was one of the best lobster rolls I've had in my life. I highly recommend Neptune Oyster to anyone and everyone who plans on traveling to Boston in near future. Hats off to the chef, you have a beautiful thing going on. Best hot lobster rolls in Boston, they also give you a generous portion of lobster shown in the photo. They don't take reservations so try to get here early, better for smaller parties as the restaurant is small. The oysters were also so fresh and delicious with a grey selection! BOMB DOT COM. This place is SOOOOO GOOOOOOD!! My cousin took my boyfriend and I here while we were in town visiting. The line was already long and stretched it before the place even opened and it was on a Monday too! But makes sense why because this place is bangin! Anyways, the place is really small so also makes sense to why the waits would be long because there really isn't much seats at all. We ordered some oysters for appetizers and it was really good. We got a paper to choose what we wanted and I don't remember what I chose but man were they delicious and FRESH! I also tried clams for the first time and it was so yummy and meaty. I ordered the lobster spaghetti. OMG DROOLS. It was so good and there was so much lobster meat! The restaurant is definitely on the pricier end but worth it. The seafood tasted so fresh and amazing. read more
You get there and line up but the line up is to put your name down and then another 2-4 hour waiting time. We waited about 2.5 hrs after putting our name down around 7pm. They are very accurate when it comes to calling us back for the reservation. We ordered the scallops and of course the lobster roll. The scallops also had bits of bacon and salad and it was delicious! The lobster roll came with fries and it sandwich was huge! You definitely get what you pay for! Went for brunch and had an excellent meal! Showed up at 11:45 AM (they open at 11:30 on Saturdays) and there was already a 1.5 hour wait for a party of 2. Although the food is worth the wait, go 2 hours before when you want to eat, put your name in, and enjoy the streets and shops of the North End while you wait. Raw oysters and shrimp cocktail were fresh. Hot lobster roll was on amazing as always! The seared scallops were very good as well. read more

Love seafood? Love oysters? Love lobster roll? Neptune Oyster is a wonderful place to go and once you do you'll understand why people line up before they even open. Came here on a Saturday morning, semi late as we were one of those people who waited in line before it open...we were pretty far back near the end of the line. Anyways, we put our name on the list and came back about 45mins later. We sat at the bar and our server was very lovely and knowledgeable on suggesting some oysters to try. We got four different oysters (forgive me I don't remember their names). I'm not an expert on oysters, but it's really neat to try different ones and taste the difference between them--some are subtle but others are very distinctly different in taste. They're fresh and cracked open right by the chef at the front window. We also had uni--sea urchin which was new to me...I found out I'm not a fan of uni, but my boyfriend liked it. And finally we got their famous lobster roll. So I love lobster, I like in Maine and have lobster quite often, BUT I'm not a fan of lobster in bread. I think it's just an unnecessary filler, I rather just eat the lobster on its own lol. But, I must admit this lobster roll is the best one I've had so far and it's pretty darn good, the bun works in great harmony with the buttery lobster ( oh we had it hot instead of cold) and it just really worked and tasted great . I would eat their lobster roll again and of course their oysters the next time I'm there :D read more

I absolutely LOVE this place!! I have been eating their lobster rolls ever since my college days and I never tire of them. Quick tip! Get the lobster rolls hot with butter because they taste 10 times better than the cold mayo version. Of course the lobster roll doesn't come cheap but the roll is large and they are generous with the lobster. Shoe strong fries are great too! I've tried their chowder and halibut as well. The chowder is not as thick and creamy as other Boston chowders but delicious in its own right. Their other seafood items are also fresh! It's a tiny shop so go early to put your name down and they will text you when your table is ready! read more

When we were there, they did not offer this. Everyone just had to wait in line along the sidewalk. The line moved pretty quickly though.
Do they automatically add 20% of the tip on every customer's bill?
they did mine. "because take away takes a lot of time and takes time away from waiting tables".
Will it open during thanksgiving?
There open day before. Thursday will be Quiet in the area..

I've gone on a Friday around 3pm and there was almost no wait (10-15 min), unfortunately 4-5pm or the later you get the wait is usually impossible.
Is it easy to get in for a party of 5-6 since we can't make reservations for dinner around 7?
I don't think for inside. The restaurant is small. There is outside seating when I visited.

They're still not taking reservations, you have to go in person and put your name down and they'll give you an estimated time window and call you back once your table is ready. You can request indoor or outdoor seating, and typically the wait hasn't…
