One of the best banh mi sandwich I've had! Way better than lees sandwich... I really don't think you can compare it to lees cause it's so much better! The bread they use won't cut up your mouth. It's perfect and doesn't get soggy with the pork and the veggies. The sandwich was very flavorful and you can taste each separate ingredients in every bite. I highly recommend trying one of these sandwiches. Especially with the green spicy sauce they have! That thing is good with everything! I even dipped the yummy crunchy garlic fries in it! I also got the Vietnamese coffee and boy it is so strong! Can't complain though I definitely needed it's The only downside is that everything you order is separate. There are no combos or anything so expect to spend at least $10-$12 bucks if you want a combo style meal. One thing for sure, the portions are big. At first bite, I was impressed. The marinated pork is deliciously flavorful, tender, and non-tendinous throughout. It's then stuffed with fresh cucumber, cilantro, and pickled carrots in a lightly toasted baguette. The marination does tread the line of being too salty for some, but I fell in love. Although there is already a subtle kick in the pork, douse it in their green ahi verde sauce for more heat. Bulgogi Steak Banh Mi ($6.45)- TRY IT. While the seared short rib is marvelously tender as the pork, I feel the bulgogi sauce is too sweet. It masks the complimenting flavors of the other ingredients and conceals the distinctive char that I adored from the sandwich above. Still considered to be a very solid order, but the pork banh mi is the better choice. NK Sliders ($4.95)- MEH. Equally boring in presentation and taste. I appreciate the handpacked patties, but a shame it doesn't match the flavor profiles of their banh mi. Cajun Garlic Fries ($3.95)- TRY IT. I was mildly disappointed when the fries came out since I heard how this Kitchen bombards their fries with garlic cloves--I didn't get any of that. Thankfully, the fries were crispy and lightly seasoned with a small hint of garlic taste. I'd compare it to Boiling Crab's, but just a couple levels below the crawfish house's standard. ----- Conclusion: With authentic banh mi establishments everywhere in Orange County, NK's pork banh mi manages to rise above them in taste. Despite the massive proliferation of Asian fusion over the past couple of years, it's honestly never done it for me. I've always found that the combination is hard to get right. To me, good fusion leaves the core of a particular food intact while adding an interesting flair using uncommon ingredients. In the case of Nguyen's Kitchen, you have a pretty diverse menu of Vietnamese foods such as banh mi with interesting meats like bulgogi. There's also some American thrown into the mix with foods like sliders and salads. Unfortunately Nguyen's misses the point for me. My finacee and I ended up getting the bulgogi short rib steak sandwich which had decent makings of a good banh mi: the bread was clearly artisanal and not your typical French baguette and the pickled veggies had the crunch you'd be expecting. Where it felt short was perhaps the execution of the bulgogi which ended up releasing too much meat juice into the bread, thus ruining the texture of the bread. Not a great start to the meal. I will add that the spicy green sauce they use is a much welcomed addition to the sandwich. It's got some heat to it though so use with caution. We also ordered a garlic noodles with grilled pork. The noodles itself had great flavor and was very heavy handed with the garlic and included more of that bomb spicy green sauce. The noodles were a little clumped up together so the texture was less than ideal but the biggest let down was the grilled pork. When I think of grilled pork, I'm expected it to have some char to it. I was expecting thit nuong (Vietnamese grilled pork) which is typically grilled over an open flame and what I got was plancha that had no char or smoky flavor whatsoever. Twice in a week. I'm in love. I heard lunch is super crazy since it's in the CHOC area and everyone convenes there for food. Dinner is manageable and not too crazy, so grabbing a table isn't too difficult. The menu isn't overwhelming and the prices are reasonable, so it's really easy to order multiple things without breaking the bank. On both occasions, we pretty much had the same thing, but make sure you try some of their signature teas to enjoy with your meal; Wintermelon is delicious, but I really enjoyed the peach lychee tea. It's a green base, so if you're susceptible to caffeine, I'd steer clear in the evening or else you'll be watching infomercials at 4am as I did! For food: Grilled Pork Banh Mi: Grilled pork, cilantro, pickled carrots, and cucumber. I'll have to say that this is my favorite thing here. Not only is the meat nicely seasoned, I loved the crispy roll that it's served on. There is a subtle amount of heat and they accompany the sandwich with some of their special green sauce if you need to kick it up a notch. Garlic Pasta: Spend the extra to get the chicken thigh. If you're not a fan of garlic, you'll not enjoy this dish. If you have friends that don't enjoy garlic, they're gonna hate you after eating it. Again, the chicken thigh is nice and juicy and they don't skimp on how much they give you in the serving. Bulgogi Banh Mi: Same as the grilled pork version but with short rib instead. It was delicious and came drizzled in bulgogi sauce to give it that sweet addition with every bite. The grilled pork still trumps the sandwich section though. Cajun Garlic Fries: Just when you thought you'd couldn't have enough garlic in your life, here comes an order of fried potatoes. Cooked nicely and containing big smelly cloves, add that delicious green sauce for dipping and it's a delicious side! Sliders: Comes in an order of two. I'd recommend as an app since it's not big enough to curb your appetite if you're hungry. Out of all the dishes, I think these are my least favorite - but they aren't bad. But compared to everything else the restaurant has to offer, I think these may be the ones I'd skip out on in the future. Popcorn Chicken: Nicely seasoned, not greasy and I love the sauce that comes to dip. Again, great as a shared app before the stars of the show. When it's packed, I can see parking being an issue as they have limited spaces in the small lot that they are in. It was a perfect amount of food in a late night meal for us. The Garlic noodles is SO bomb! I am Filipino, and we really like our garlic (like garlic fried rice) and these noodle do not disappoint. It does need some kind of meat so I would not get it by itself unless you pair it with a sandwich like I did. Regardless, it came with some amazing sauce given by the heavens. Holy moly, after putting the sauce in, I entered foodie heaven for sure. That same amazing sauce came with the sandwich (bahn mi). I literally cannot get enough of it. I think I could put it on every food I will ever eat... In my life. I wasn't sure what to think of the price. It's more than the typical Bahn Mi place, but this is also a nicer restaurant. My sister and I decided to come here and try different things. We ordered the Bulgogi Steak Sandwich, Garlic Noodles with grilled pork, Peach and Lychee Green Tea, and Green Milk Tea. Bulgogi Steak Sandwich ($6.45): baguette sandwich that comes with bulgogi, cucumber, cilantro, pickled carrots, and bulgogi sauce. Definitely a solid banh mi for sure. The flavors are a tad bit spicy, so watch out! I though the bulgogi was actually really flavorful and worked well in this one, and the cilantro gave it an extra kick. This place is so good it should be hidden. One word...ok 2 GARLIC NOODLES. They are to die for. I love the noodles with bulgogi (beef). You can also get chicken or pork ( I think) but the bulgogi is where it's at. The garlic noodles are very garlic-y, so don't plan on going on a date or kissing anybody you don't know very well after but they're so good I don't care! The flavor of the noodles are delicious and balanced with the flavorful meat and garlic notes and they have great texture. They aren't over cooked or soggy noodle and the portion sizes are fairly hefty. The popcorn chicken here is delicious too. The texture is delicate and unlike any other popcorn chicken I've had. The chicken is battered with a light coating, fried fresh to order, and is seasoned with a delicious Thai/Asian seasoning. I wanted to try this place out as soon as I heard it was opening because I've heard that they use higher quality ingredients than the average Vietnamese place. I've really enjoyed the majority of the food I've gotten the chance to try. I've had the Bulgogi Steak Sandwich, Garlic Chicken Breast Sandwich, Garlic Pasta with Chicken, Cajun Garlic Fries, and Popcorn Chicken. The steak banh mi won me over, hands down!!! That was what was making me come back! I wanted to try the chicken breast sandwich because it sounded similar to a sandwich from Le Diplomate Cafe that I had a long time ago. It was good, similar, but I still preferred the steak banh mi. The garlic pasta was ok, really garlic-y, but nothing special. I wouldn't get that again. Cajun fries were good, but also nothing special. Popcorn chicken was good, but the portion size was a lot smaller than I had expected. Customer service was alright both times I went. It's been about a month since I last went, and they had just opened, so hopefully it's a bit better now. The employees were still training at that time. The parking lot's a bit small, and the first time we came, we passed it and had to go around the block, but it wasn't bad at all. Loved everything about this little sandwich and noodle shop! The menu is small with a few major categories including banh mi sandwiches, noodle + pasta dishes, starters/sides and drinks. Marinated chicken thigh + garlic pasta: total comfort food! Flavorful, satisfying and packed with so much garlic you'll be tasting it the next day. Pork banh mi: my fave of the banh mis. The pork is well marinated, slightly sweet and a little bit charred. The sweet carrot + radish pickles are done right and the cilantro sauce is deliciously hot! Bulgogi banh mi: I like the idea more than the execution here, but still a solid sandwich with lots of good flavor. The meat didn't have as much flavor from the marinade as I hoped, but again, overall not bad. Green cilantro sauce: instead of fresh sliced jalapenos, their sandwiches are doused in an incredible, spicy (medium level heat) green cilantro sauce, a little reminiscent of Peruvian aji sauce. Ask for extra to put on the rest of your food and dip your fries! So good. Cajun fries: perfect. Covered in lots of salt and spices, this is the best side to accompany the rest of the food! Popcorn Chicken: I think this has the same cajun spices as the fries, so overall very tasty and juicy! Sliders: these were the least impressive of all the dishes I've had so far, but I do enjoy the mushrooms and flavors in the meat, even if it was a little over done and the buns weren't my favorite, a little too dense and heavy. We were given small samples of the winter melon tea which was sweet and fragrant! The peach and lychee tea was also super refreshing and ended up being the perfect compliment to our meal. The owners were friendly and chatted us up after we ordered and made sure to check up on us after we devoured our feast. The garlic noodles was a big portion... enough to have some leftovers. Large pieces of savory garlic throughout the dish. The popcorn chicken was crisp and not oily. Very, very good. Definitely one of those places where you can find instagrammable food. Does it live up to taste though? We got the grilled pork banh mi, garlic noodles, and fries. Let's start with the banh mi, bread was fantastic fluffy and the meat was perfectly seasoned. The downside is that you get a mouth full of pickled veggies at times, no jalapeño, no pate, and no butter. They gave us a green sauce to go with it but it's too sweet rather and doesn't compliment any of our dishes. The garlic noodles were great! I don't have many complaints about it other than the flavor getting a bit tiring towards the end. The Cajun fries were alright and unfortunately they didn't have their aioli at the time.
