I liked this restaurant when it was Niku Niku, hence wanting to come back, but as the new all you can eat BBQ, I'm disappointed. The price per person is more than reasonable, maybe a little too reasonable because the majority of the menu was sold out by the time we arrived for our 6:30 reservation, including items on the drink menu. They should have told us about the unavailable items before we sat down and started ordering rather than let us pay for the premium menu only to find out we weren't able to order what we wanted and had paid for. There was no beef tongue, no wagyu brisket, no wagyu anything else, no pork jowl, no marinated meats, no nigori sake... We resorted to ordering some sides, but there was no corn cheese, and the fries and takoyaki both came out cold (as in, from the fridge cold). I think our server tried his best but he seemed very overwhelmed. We had to ask him to reenter items in our order repeatedly because he missed our orders. The kitchen also switched our orders multiple times from one thing to another and we had to just eat whatever was brought to our table since there was a 90 minute time limit to dining and we had a hard time catching our server. I made a larger party reservation to celebrate a friend and they didn't tell us they would split our party into two different tables before we all arrived and they sat us. When this restaurant was Niku Niku, everything was so delicious. After the revamp to Niku Feast, everything has gone downhill. Sure I understand for the price of $32, some meats will not be great quality but ALL of the cuts of meat were so tough and chewy. If you have bad teeth, you probably cannot eat any of the meat here. The pictures of the meat on the menu don't look anything like what they actually serve. The picture of the roasted sesame salad on the menu has tomatoes and onions in it but what was served was just cut up romaine lettuce with dressing. The corn cheese is just corn with maybe 2-3 shreds of cheese. The salad bar was a mess. I sat next to the salad bar and the entire time I was there not one person came to clean up the mess. I felt like the waiter or anyone at the restaurant wasn't even trying. The waiter brought out cooked appetizers and proceeded to place them on top of the trays that had raw meat. A coworker and I decided to try this place out one evening on a whim and boy am I glad we did. We got the wagyu combo ($118 for two). It included a choice of 2 salads, 2 carbs, a variety of starters and a sampling of meats, as well as an additional protein choice. From start to finish, the meal was exceptional. Our waiter (wish I caught his name) was the perfect amount of attentive - explained everything thoroughly and even demonstrated the best way to cook every cut of the meat and how to eat it. This is a very authentic Japanese bbq in terms of cuts, presentation, bbq setup, marinate, etc. The good: the limited inner tongue, I recommend bbqing it a little longer so that it is cooked through. The zabuton was also very good, it had an extra layer of wagyu umami. Recommend. The meh: the other two beef tongue options. The one with the onion is awkward to cook. But I would also recommend using a mix of scallion and onion both finely chopped instead of coarsely chopped onions. Also the tongue would taste much better if it was sliced thinner as well. Great Japanese BBQ spot. I've been to a number of Japanese BBQ places over the years. Some chains and other that are more expensive. My opinion is that Niku Niku is a great hybrid that delivers great quality of meats from moderately priced to more expensive along with some nice accompaniments. Made a reservation in advance and we're taken to a nice table. Number of drink options are available but opted for the green tea. Menus may be a little overwhelming for some, but it's okay bc the waiter was able to give some great guidance. The steak choices were all delicious and offered different textures depending on what you are looking for. Not an inexpensive exercise, but certainly worth every penny. Superficially this is a nice enough yakiniku restaurant - it's part of a Japanese chain that skews more high end on the scale of bbq-at-the-table establishments. The food itself is well presented (see the attached photos), the equipment is of good quality (the grill vents below the table, and a fan sucks the smoke downward = you will not smell like grilled meat on the post-meal journey home). That all being said, the portion sizes are in some cases laughably small, especially for the price (would you care for a thimble of Kimchi? That'll cost you $4), the service is hit-or-miss, and the chawanmushi was so stiff you could stand your spoon up in it. I would maybe try this place one more time - the meat itself is good. Coming here 2 nights back to back obviously says a lot about this place. All meats were high quality. You get what you pay for, so try the waygu combo. We've tried the angus combo and we enjoyed the waygu more. So buttery and soft it melts in your mouth. The salads were okay, miso was really good though and the oishi rice was good as well. I'm there from Vancouver with my family, including children, and they tell me they won't serve me as I'm too late and they were closing. The A5 wagyu was so divine, rich and basically melted in your mouth. Andrew showed us the 2 ways you can eat it either dipped in their bbq/ egg mixture or the salted onion. Both were fantastic but I preferred the egg dipped while my friend preferred the salt onion. I was so full but my friend really wanted to order another plate and I'm glad we did because the last plate of meat we ordered was fantastic! The gold label wagyu was tender but also had that buttery flavor to it. I like that this had more of a bite versus just disintegrating in your mouth haha. I can see why it was a restaurant favorite. It comes with a variety of different cuts of American wagyu. The spicy miso sauce was my favorite dipping sauce for all the meat. Now the star of the show, the A5 Japanese wagyu slices. WOW.
