We ended up at Nyonya since our first pick had too much of a wait. Nyonya doesn't look super big from the outside but once you step inside, you can see it goes further back and off to the side. The menu is huge so you will need a few extra minutes to peruse it completely. We ended up trying the following: - Ginger duck ($17.95): Okay, grew on me as I kept eating but might try something else next time. - Beef rendang ($19.50): Not bad but not as much of a coconut milk flavor as I'd hoped. - Chow kueh teow ($12.95): My favorite of the bunch. A red pepper symbol is next to it on the menu, but I didn't find it too spicy. Guess these "Malaysian famous stir fried flat rice noodles" with seafood are famous for a reason! The Michelin Guide's Bib Gourmand reviewer agrees with me: "The chow kueh teow, with stir-fried noodles, tiger prawns and squid, is a go-to dish." - White rice ($1.75) The food portion sizes make Nyonya a good value. It's a cash only spot, and they do a thorough job of not letting you not know it. The service dropped off after the food arrived. We wanted to pay and leave but the staff suddenly were scarce. I did enjoy seeing a server balance several plates on his arms like they were nothing. Skills! In true Manhattan style, the tables were pretty close together, and I unfortunately found myself wasting brain time on the couple and the group of friends next to us more than I wanted to. We ordered the Roti, Wonton Mee, Kang Kung Belacun, and the Hainanese chicken. Everything came out pretty quick and the food was so flavorful! The Roti was super crispy and flakey - my friend said it was the best roti she ever had. This was also my first time trying Kang Kung Belacun and it was so yummy. The prices were also very reasonable, but the place is cash only. Service was okay, it was hard to get the attention of the staff occasionally - since there's only a few of them serving the entire restaurant sometimes our waiter would be on the other side of the restaurant and we couldn't get his attention. The place was comfortable and the tables have a bit spacing but it could be different in the weekends. It's a nice place to have dinner at. Pork belly with sweet potato: 6/10 I liked the pork in this dish although it is very fatty. My issue is there were only four pieces of pork and the sauce wasn't my favorite. It's a sweet sauce, but I wasn't into it. Chow Kueh Teow Noodles: 11/10 I loved these noodles! There was so much flavor it was unlike anything else I had ever tasted! Lots of great proteins mixed in that were all great too. The noodles were well cooked. There was a hint of spice but it only added to the flavor. It wasn't too spicy at all. AMAZING! Best Malaysian meal i have had outside of Malaysia. My GFs and I have decided to come back every year all coming from different parts of the US. Cantonese style hor fun (wide rice noddles with egg drop soup)- the bomb! So satisfying. The flavor is perfect, light yet creamy (without the cream), not too salty or felt greasy. The seafood is fresh and plenty. The most important is the 'wok' heat. It has that! Char kuey teow (wide rice noodles stir fry like savory pad ke mao in Thai food)- one of the most important aspect of this dish is the 'wok' heat. It has that! The rest will taste good because they know eggs they are doing. Asam laksa (chewy udon type noodles in sour spicy fish based broth)- I would give this a 4 stars. I like it but I prefer a more sour version. This could be a personal preference. But they have everything a good asam laksa should have. Kangkung belacan (water spinach- a crunchy leafy veggies with spicy fermented fish paste)- this is an acquired tastes but this place made it perfectly!!!! So much depth and deliciousness. I would literally describe this restaurant as charging you for leftovers. You know... the problem with that is that I came for good food and not for leftovers. As other reviews have also mentioned, service is pretty much nonexistent. I'm honestly fine with nonexistent service, but the problem becomes when service gets bad. Not once but TWICE, a waiter came over to our table and gave us a dish that wasn't ours. At one point they even tried to convince us that the dish was ours. They were like, "You ordered this. You ordered the Singaporean rice noodles." I hate to tell you all, but we did not, in fact, order the Singaporean rice noodles. The second time, they dropped off spring rolls that we didn't order. Little did we know that we would fall in love with the spareribs! Something about the curry season pairing with its falling off the bone meat, with chicken broth rice, just hit the spot. It was so good that my friend ordered another one of it to take home right after. It was a good balance between the colder and warmer dish, and the Hainan chicken was what was expected. When you first walk into Nyonya, they emphasize that it's cash only, but have an atm available if needed. We ordered the Roti Prata ($5.95), Clay Pot Pearl Noodle Soup ($11.95), and Curry Mee with Young Tau Foo ($12.95). I think the prices are very fair for what you get. For the Roti Prata, you get a thicker but still flaky Indian pancake with curry dipping sauce. The curry was flavorful comes with one piece of potato and a small piece of chicken. The Clay Pot Pearl Noodles had a clean egg drop soup taste with seafood (shrimp and squid). The noodles were short, thick, and bouncy. I usually don't like bean sprouts in my noodles because I think the flavor is overpowering, but I didn't mind it in this dish. The only issue is that there was too much bean sprouts compared to pearl noodles. The Curry Mee with Young Tau was my least favorite of what we ordered. The curry flavor was a little bland and I mainly tasted heat from the spice. I don't think the yellow noodles hung onto the broth well. The best part of the dish were the tofu skins because they absorbed the broth well. There was an incident where a lady came in asking for a table, when her party has not shown up yet. The waitress politely asked her to sit on the side and wait for her party, but she started complaining. There is a sign that clearly states that the entire party needs to show up before they can be seated. I understand that the restaurant is not full, but if there is a restaurant policy there is no need to be aggressive and rude towards someone who is speaking nicely towards you. I thought the waitress handled the rude customer well, even though she eventually had to cave to the lady's entitlement after she complained to the boss. read more

Located in the sprawling Chinatown area, it's only a short subway ride and walk from Battery Park where we just returned with a good appetite after touring Ellis and Liberty Islands. They also have a massive menu with a huge number of dishes to choose from. - roti canai - satay chicken - Hainan chicken rice - beef rendang - salty fish fried rice - mee goreng The roti flatbread was quite distinctive and artsy - like a giant cocoon. It was so thin and delicate, and delicious with the chicken curry sauce! The Hainan chicken, despite being white meat, looked and tasted like dark meat - so moist and also very delicious. The beef rendang was so generous, tasty, and tender, yum. The salty fish fried rice - a treat you will rarely encounter. The mee goreng - a very complex mix of flavors and authentic with little pieces of salty squid. A callout to Benny, one of the servers, who gave us a history of their business (originating in Boston, 30 years ago, and later moved here) and on some of the delicious dish preparations. We came here with a group of people that we didn't know haha. I met this woman at a different Yelp event and she invited A and I to this dinner with her group of friends. It's got an extensive menu of Malaysian dishes, Cantonese dishes, some Thai dishes, drinks, and desserts. Their roti is on point - it's crunchy so when you break it up, the crumbs go everywhere so just be careful. I honestly don't remember what everyone got. I got the Laksa, which was just the right amount of spice and fish-based sauce. I probably would've eaten the whole thing but I got super full about halfway and I didn't want to force myself to finish it, but it was very good. I think my friend got the mango chicken - as she doesn't eat red meat. She and her husband had been there a few times before and they always get the same dishes. Nyonya continues to be a great Malaysian dinner spot! It sports great value comforting food although some dishes can be hit or miss at times. Masak Lemak - this has become one of my favorites! The flavor in the meat and gravy has yet to disappoint me, and I now order this almost every time I drop by Nyonya. Pineapple Fried Rice - sometimes this can be hit or miss, but if you get a saucy dish like Masak Lemak, this rice is a great compliment to those dishes without you having to order extra rice. The hidden dessert gems: ABC - at a whopping 6.95 price point, you get a load of shaved ice with a ton of different ingredients - corn, palm seeds, beans, and jelly. This is a great dessert I like to end my Nyonya meal with as long as I have a friend to share it with. Chendol - shaved ice with green pea strips, beans, and some taro tasting syrup(?). I can't tell if it is taro, but it definitely packs a tasy punch. Nasi Lemak and roti canai are some classics I would recommend if you have never had them before. If you need more rice to pair with your entrees, do try the coconut rice or chicken rice instead of the regular plain rice. I will say after trying the many diverse stir fried noodles, I don't crave the noodles here as they have come out a little bland.
