Appetizers: The oysters are a definite yes - the sauce they have on the side is super refreshing and gives such good flavor to the oyster. The spare ribs are good as well, not too special but very tender and flavorful. The broccoli is on the salty and bitter side so I wouldn't recommend as much. The steamed dumplings were okay - nothing too special as well, but an easy dish to share! Mains: Pad Thai is always a good dish to judge a restaurant, and I was not disappointed. My table ordered three drinks (obao, flunk flink, and a long winter) and they were all so good, you can't go wrong with any of them! OBAO midtown east offers grocery items - in addition to its restaurant menu. The grocery option is an added bonus & the prices are reasonable - plus they deliver. Delivery was not free though & it took longer than most. I went online to see if they'd lost the order. It was "on the way" The food finally arrived & was packaged well, although they forgot to include chop sticks. Included was sad slice of anemic lime. I had to squeeze & squeeze & then toss it into the broth. Compared with other restaurants in the area, the Pho soup was average and the toppings were less generous than other similarly priced restaurants in the area. The Thai iced tea packaging was professional and the flavor was ok. The last time I went to OBAO was before the pandemic & at the other location in Hell's Kitchen. All my friends have been to Obao so I can't believe I was so late to trying it out. Happy to say we finally went and enjoyed a cozy dinner in their private, safe, heated outdoor space. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We started out with some of their speciality cocktails (see the pics) which were fresh and tasty. For appetizers we had a variety of veg and non-veg. I like OBAO. Unfortunately, it's their other location in Hell's Kitchen that is really good. This one, not so much. Note: Our dining was in the fall. But this was written after winter hit. So I have no idea what their outdoor seating with heating (or not) is like and can't speak to that. At the time we went their outdoor set up was quite lovely and inviting with tables spaced adequately enough apart and adherence to COVID protocols, which is important to us. Service was nice enough, though our server was a bit too pushy with the trying to upsell us with other dishes and items despite our "no thank you(s)." We started out with the Sambal Spicy Calamari. Let's just say we sent it back and swapped it out for the Dum Mushroom Dumplings. It was not our cup of tea or particularly good. The mushroom dumplings tasted rather nasty to me, but my husband liked them a tad more than that. I had the Pad Thai, while the hubby had the Pho Bo. Eh. There was nothing particularly memorable about the PT. It was okay. Not the greatest. Not the worst. Not my favorite. He seemed to enjoy his Pho. Will we be back. I went here on a Friday night with a reservation through seated. I've been to the West Side location and was excited to try their slightly-different menu in a closer location. Unfortunately we were not able to request outdoor seating but they had plenty available. They have partitioned and heated tables out front for 3-5 people and an enclosed "outdoor" area out back. This honestly felt a little like eating indoors though there was some ventilation. Tables did not have partitions and were kind of close to one another. To start we had the steamed dumplings. Then I had the drunken noodles and my boyfriend had the pad Thai. We were both happy they asked us what type of meat we wanted in the pasta, as the menu seemed to state each came with one in particular. To drink we shared a carafe of the house sake and then I had some matcha lava ice cream for dessert. Everything was very delicious. The east side location has a cool back room with booth seating with a long table in the middle. Unfortunately you can't sit in the booth of its just you and another person. We both ordered papaya salad to start with. I thought the salad was all right, average. Then my friend ordered the vegetable green curry and I had vegetable drunken noodle or pad kee mao (not meow). I tried my friend's green curry and I thought that was one of the best I've ever tasted. The broth wasn't too creamy nor watery and the combination of different vegetables was perfect. I thought I had made a mistake by not ordering the green curry. However, after having my first bite of my drunken noodles, I knew I made the right choice, it was extremely delicious! I'm aware that pad kee mao is delicious but this one is better than most. I highly recommend both entrees. I was deciding between that and the curry and the server recommended the khao soi. They used my favorite noodles and the chicken was extremely tender. They give you a knife but you literally don't need one because the meat just falls of the bone. It has a bit of spice but it's not too much where you can't enjoy it. I would probably order the same thing if I were to come back. My only comment is that middle seating area is really tight so people or servers would be touching my back and the table is skinny. Food: I got the classic spicy Vietnamese dish (bun bo hue) that came with slices of beef and some fatty pork. The broth itself was pretty good, and the noodles were snappy and well done. The one thing I was slightly disappointed with was the lack of spice in the dish - I'd somehow been expecting just a little more zing. But the portion size was rather satisfying for the price and I'd go back to try some of their other dishes. They also seem to have a pretty good deal (free apps with entrees) during weekdays!
