While visiting the area from Glendale, AZ, I made a trip to Obra Bakery to find out for myself if the potato balls are better than Porto's! Finally checked this placed out after yoga at YogaSix! Great service! A variety of empanadas! I tried their bbq pork, beef, Cuban and seafood empanadas! My favorite would have to be their beef! The empanadas were so filling and they currently have a deal where you get 2 free if you order a dozen. I also tried their iced tres leches latte, it was very sweet but a great treat if you're looking for more of a dessert coffee. They have some tables set up on their patio if you want to enjoy your food outside. Parking can be difficult since it is a busy plaza but I found parking easily on a Friday morning. read more

I've been here a few times before. If you haven't been to OBRA and tried their delicious empanadas then I recommend you checking them out. They usually have at least over 6 different types of empanadas and sometimes they have a seasonal one. They are always really good and come out warm and ready to eat. They gave you their yummy sauces they go along with them as well and are always satisfying. Besides their delicious empanadas they also have sweet baked items such as mini cakes, pies, and tarts. Oh and they have their deep fried potato balls. They also make sandwiches and have a full coffee menu. Although it's a smaller bakery they have a few places to sit and enjoy your food and drink. I wanted to try something similar to Portos but wasent Portos as I was going to be in the Carson area. Obra popped up on my feed and from the pictured and reviews it looked pretty good. It's actually a really small store right off PCH. Minimal seating inside and some chairs and tables outside by the parking lot. They don't even have a restroom for the public here. I ordered a dozen of their empanadas, at the cost of $53 which to me is a lot more than what Portos asks for a dozen empanadas. But fortunately you get 2 free empanadas with a purchase of a dozen. They have a variety of empanadas from beef and potato to cuban style to seafood to many other types. They also have many different types of baked goods, cakes, sandwhichsles and coffee. Their empanadas are good. Flaky, has a little bit if umph to it. Full of filling. Each one tasted great but unique. I also had their tres leche iced coffee which was really good too. They have a few tables outside on a sidewalk if you want to eat right there and a counter with just 4-5 seats inside. I ordered a cup of lentil soup, a beef & chicken ball, some empanadas and some cookies. The lentil soup is really, really good. Potatoes, carrots, green peppers & onions. Very satisfying. The chicken ball was really good. I love the green sauce with it. Crispy on the outside, flavorful on the inside. The mocha cream filled cookie is so yummy. The strawberry linzer cookie is divine. I was in the mood for empanadas and decided to stop by Obra Bakery. I have been a few times in the past as well, but I guess I never wrote a review! There are a few tables set up just outside the restaurant for dine-in, but you can also get takeout. They offer some sandwiches from 8AM-3PM in addition to the bakery open until 6PM. For today, I opted for three empanadas (chicken, bbq pork, and Cuban), plus one potato ball. I was given two sets of accompanying sauces too. The potato ball exterior was nice and flaky/crunchy, and all of the empanadas were yummy. The empanadas are baked and have a denser crust. I also got a fresh lemonade to drink which was refreshing as well. For dessert, I decided to try the coconut dulce de leche cake, which was sweet but rich. Service at the counter was friendly. I had the most delicious beef and potato empanada from Obra! It was so flavorful! All of the ingredients perfectly combine to create this empanada that melts in your mouth. The sauces were not needed, but absolutely perfect! I placed an order online and was able to pick it up from the very sweet staff in less than a minute. They had all of the empanadas on display so you can easily pick out what you want if you order when you get there. I'll definitely be back. read more

I am a foodie. I heard about this place on instagram and said next time I'm in Long Beach I would give them a try. It's a quaint little place. A few counter seatings inside and two tables for four outside. The staff was very knowledgeable,friendly and welcoming. For starters, I took the recommendation of one of the staff members and had the Beef Ropa Vieja and the Cuban Empanadas. They were served with a Spicy Mayo and green salsa. I thoroughly enjoyed both of the empanadas and green salsa. I found the spicy mayo to be a little sweet for my taste and not so spicy. I really enjoyed the green salsa and could have had more. To finish off my meal I had a hot coffee con Leche and a guava cheese pastry. Which was absolutely delicious. I couldn't resist getting a pastry or a specialty coffee because they had so many to choose from. I just had to try a less one and I was very pleased. Tried out this new bakery as I have been hearing good things. People compare it to Porto's as it has Cuban flavors, but they both have their own flair. The best part is the swift service, friendly customer service and fresh taste. Some of the more popular items were not in stock but tried the Cuban Sandwich, Guava Cheesecake, 2 empanadas and 2 potato balls to share with my wife. Loved the curry chicken empanada but the other one was dry. The potato balls are double the price as Porto's but double the size, these have def a lot of potato. The place is a smaller new shop, they have a printed vinyl sign outside but I'm not sure if it's the management of the plaza as other businesses had the same signage. I didn't get a chance to try more on the menu, but I tried the potato ball, empanadas --beef, chicken, and chicken curry (seasonal). With the food comes two sauces, a green savory and chipotle tasting creamy sauce. My boyfriend and I went to OBRA on a sunny Saturday afternoon. The bakery unfortunately doesn't have a restroom available for customers and because the plaza was under construction, there weren't a lot of other business open around that we could use theirs. Despite this, we were eager to try the bakery. The bakery is small with a few outdoor seatings. There were lots of freshly baked pastries lining their glass case. We opted to get a cuban sandwich to share, beef potato balls, chicken potato balls, their seasonal paella empanada, and the chicken curry empanada. They also gave us a few sauces, but we weren't sure what the sauces were for so we just ended up putting it on everything. The potato balls were HUGE compared Porto's and they had a cheesier filling. The start of the show was however their Cubano. The pork was so moist and the pickles were the perfect level fo salinity to breakthrough that fatty pork. The curry chicken empanada was good, but wasn't the best empanada crust I've ever had. The only reason why I gave this place 4 stars was because both my boyfriend and I got an upset stomach after eating the paella empanada. The filling was extremely fishy (and that's coming from someone who loves tinned fish and sardines). They added imitation crab to it which added a very strange sweetness it as well. Wait 4-5 minutes and you'll get a warm, crunchy taste of your choice of potato plus filling. The empanada is just as delicious with a crunchy exterior and delicious filling. It is a small bakery, but it has tables and chair that allow guest to eat outside of the store. Servers were attentive and services were fast. I ordered chicken, beef, BBQ Pork, sausage, and Cuban. Each empanada has a stamp of their flavor on it. The seasonings were perfect and not too dry. My favorite is Cuban. I was stuffed and could not try their pasty, but the pasties look beautiful. I also ordered tres leches coffee. This is such an eye opening experience that I could not imagine that the flavor of tres leches matches perfectly great with coffee. This was a destination spot for me, not being around Long Beach. They are known for their empanadas, so I went in with high hopes. From social media posts, this place sounded like the Portos of Long Beach. There was so much yellow mustard, you might as well call it a mustard sandwich. The portion was just right for the price. The empanadas were good but not great. I read a few folks complain about the edges being raw or close to raw, and I get it. Mine wasn't raw but it could have cooked a bit longer in the oven. The beef and sausage empanadas had a dominating potato flavor. The potato balls were huge, and they were filled with seasoned meat and melty cheese. I really enjoyed this item. I heard they were better than Porto's. Not for me. The were double the size and had just way too much potato for me. I also bought an empanada. I think it was a bbq pork. That one was really good.
