What a wonderful surprise today. My wife & I had just gone to our optometrist and were wondering what to get for lunch. Checking Yelp, I saw there was a place nearby with a wide variety of Korean side dishes and Korean fried chicken. Turns out it was right around the corner of the parking lot. OhMama is located where the deli used to be. It's family owned and the daughter running the register, Sarah, is just the sweetest, helpful young lady. She went over what they had to offer to help us make our choice. The fried chicken is AWESOME! It's prepared just right and the pieces had a good amount of meat. The sauce has a touch of heat and is very tasty. The spicy rice cake is spicier but not overly so. The kimbap was good too. Didn't see any California roll advertised on the website though. I picked up some cucumber Kimchee which I haven't had a chance to dig into yet but I'm looking forward to dinner. I really hope the community supports this business. They are wonderful people who are producing some really good food. I think it's so important to get behind these family owned businesses and stop the march of corporate owned restaurants feeding us processed food with mass produced ingredients. Chicken: they use party wings and bread it thinly as to give more meat without sacrificing crunch. 12 pc comes with one small sauce container of white radish. Garlic soy sauce is tossed onto wings, and though it looks like there is barely any sauce on there, it's tastable. They don't give out extra garlic soy sauce for free on the side, but they do give reds hot sauce for free. I so wanted to be wowed by their chicken because of its popularity and the steep price tag, but it wasn't meant to be. Kimbap: these are a hit or miss. On some visits, they were good, on most others it tasted off or dry. For the price, not sure if I want to take that risk. Overpriced and overrated. It's a decent place for side dishes but don't come here for food. You can 100% find cheaper and better options. The kimbap does not taste good enough for how it is priced. You get a tiny amount of it too. I don't understand how people are raving about the kimbap when it is literally the most standard kimbap ever. You can tell it has dried out from being left on the counter for a while. They don't use any special ingredients. Just go to your local korean grocer and you'll get 2-3 the amount for the same price AND it'll be fresh. My favorite mom and pop banchan shop which just so happens makes the best Korean Fried Chicken (KFC). I started coming here a few years ago and I must say their quality is consistent and fresh. They have added a few extra items throughout the years, but not at the expense of the quality of their other items that are offered. This banchan shop is family owned and operated. You can tell not only by the quality of their food, but also by their caring service that they trully care about their customers and the food they provide. I highly recommend their KFC, tteokbokki, odeng, their jeons, their rolls, basically anything and everything is delicious here. You won't be disappointed. They also offer a few traditional drink options. My personal favorite is the shikhye (rice drink). It reminds me of horchata, but with whole pices of rice instead of blended rice. I am the co operator so I've grown up eating the Chef's food at our family table since childhood. The food here is pretty top grade, easily explained without words for all the expensive healthy ingredients she uses to cook each item. Each item on the menu is very thought out, underpriced for how fresh and how big the proportions are. But still, Think quality over quantity. If you have not tried it yet, try it once at least. Especially, I am a huge fan of Korean spicy rice cake (ddeokboki) and Kimbap. I saw many of great and positive feedbacks and reviews from yelp so excited to visit here... However, it was obviously lower than my expectation. I am going to talk about ddeokboki first. It ordered regular size one (They have two type size, it was bigger one) but it was truly smaller than other place. Also, it was not too spicy and rice was not cooked well... Kimbap was nothing special. It looked good but not tasty. If you go to any of Korean market, you will earn better kimbap and ddeokboki. Anyways, It was disappointed. I asked about preordering for a large party and the owner confirmed that they were open the day of my event. I called to finalize my order 5 days before the event, like she told me to, and she realized that she had made a mistake. They are actually not open on the day of my event. After spending $50 at her restaurant to sample her food, and relying on her, all she had for me was "sorry". It just doesn't sit right with me. She never bothered to call me when she realized she was mistaken and made no actual attempt at making things right. I love their banchan and appreciate the extra care and preparation they do in making all their dishes at the premise. Everytime I walk into the place, the ladies are working on some new banchan to put out, which means they make their banchan fresh every day~ The way they season their food though, they do not take the short cut. I inquired about the burdock (banchan & the ones in the kimbop), how they make it taste so good. The nice young lady at the counter said, the sweetener they use are from the fruits, they don't just dump sugar to sweeten them. I also love the beet colored takuan/pickled radish in their kimbop. The care that they put in making their food can definitely be tasted! I love all their salted seafood selection (jeot gal). From their crab gaejang (seasonal so inquire to see if they have them first), oyster, & squid. They are simply the best banchan with that hot bowl of white rice at home. The variety of banchans/side dishes they offer that I've tried were all tasty! Granted that they may be are on a little higher side with the pricing, I'd rather get my banchan where I know the food is made clean with the care. So if you don't have a Korean mama who can cook those banchans for ya, your next best choice would be this place with the nice Korean mamas at Oh Mama's! Let's talk about their chicken wings!!! You know fried chicken is like the unofficial national dish of Korea! Many other places do it around this part of the town but this place represents KFC (Korean Fried Chicken) better than those other places! Eating fried chicken is almost a ritualistic activity for Koreans and we take it seriously. Their wings are crispy, meaty, & perfectly seasoned. The oil that the wings are fried are clean and there are no yucky old oil residues or taste in them~The chicken wings alone would be worth the trip there. Loved their chicken!!! Arguably the best chicken wing in OC!! Shikhae (rice punch - traditional Korean rice beverage) is also made so well. Not a sugar bomb, but reminds me of the shikhae that my granny used to make that was just so tasty. Sweetness is so well balanced, it doesn't make you go into a sugar shock after the first sip. For those who actually doesn't know what a real shikhae should tastes like, you definitely need to taste theirs. So refreshingly delicious and the cold shikhae will be a great drink to accompany their hot fried chicken wings~ (nope, they don't offer beer or alcohol here!) The simple and clean tasting food is what makes me go back to the place whenever I'm in this part of the town. Place itself isn't that big, there is a large communal table with the bench seating for the large groups and couple of booth along with a small bistro table for two for the dine in option. Most people order to go or pick up their orders at their premise. The service was very friendly and accommodating. You honestly wouldn't know about this place if you drove past it. Thank god for Yelp because this spot is a great diamond in the rough for fried chicken, kimbap's and Korean banchan sides. I truly wanted to buy everything in the fridge since it looked so fresh! For now I juts got the kimbap, vegetarian and sardine, which was each uniquely made. The rice in the kimbap's are more mushy. The vegetarian version was flavorful, sweet and savory. The sardine was unexpected in a good way. When you think of sardine's you think of them maybe on a pizza, salty and nasty, but this version was spicy and crunchy with Shishido leaves & pickled yellow radish. I was surprised and really enjoyed the bite size eat. When I exited the store front and talked to my wife waiting in the car, I was like, yo, we should come here instead of H-Mart/Zion for sides, it looks delicious! Took me a year to finally try their fried wings bc I prioritized their other items (ddukbokki and kimbap). But wow!!!! Definitely regret it! It's so good. The meat on the wings fall right off. The batter is very light and crisp. The marinated wings is so good - it's not a thick sauce so it's not as sticky as your typical yangnyum chicken.
