I'm so glad that I came to this place! My usual sushi place is yumi sushi which is closer to my house. But I'm going to most likely start going out to this spot for my sushi needs. We walked in around 6pm. It was not busy and we were greeted and seated right away. The first thing that stuck me was the great menu! It has very good details on the items and pictures of what you will get. This is great for a sushi newbie like me. I pretty much stick to non sashimi dishes as I don't care much for that texture. The waitress was very friendly. Gave us some time and explained a few things. We got quite a few rolls and Spicy and some tempura ones, They use a lot of Mayo and it was not very clear in the description of the rolls that their would be as much mayo as was used. In my view it was way to much but the rolls, each of them were very good. When I go again, I wont order as many items with tempura elements or i will Stress to have little or no mayo and make sure that items I'm ordering aren't filled with tempura bits or crunchy bits as they use as filler sometimes. However, our meal was great, the presentation of the dishes was fantastic, Scorpion roll looks like a scorpion! , how cool is that? We will be back. This place is awesome. We've been a couple times before and have always enjoyed it. Went here Thursday night for dinner around 7ish and it was not crowded which was nice. Started off with the salmon ragoons and they were good. The are plated on top of what we later found out to be guacamole but when I first tasted it all I tasted were peanuts, which I'm allergic to, so we didn't eat those little globs of it. The actual ragoons were tasty and a nice spin on the traditional crab ones. When the owner noticed we didn't eat the globs of stuff she asked if we didn't like guacamole and we brought up the strong peanut taste and she told us it was avocado, crunch, and fish eggs.....not sure but it had a peanut taste. Rolls we got the Tiger, Manhattan, Godzilla, and some other one that I cannot remember the name. The Manhattan was my absolute favorite! It had peppered tuna! Which was awesome! We also ordered 2 large hot sakes, because what's sushi without sake right? And the owner gave us a shot of their homemade pinappple cold sake which was fantastic as well. Have done pick up 3 times (so far) during the covid crisis. Was easy to order and pay via the online app. One time they were super busy and they were kind and apologetic. I'm surprised to see so many reviews here praising this place. I found the sushi really lacking in flavor, technique, and atmosphere. The restaurant is across from the hospital in an odd strip mall. Inside is kind of dim and there's an algae covered fish tank at the front. It's obviously a family run place, non Japanese. Maybe Chinese people? The waitress was really great, she kept me filled with tea and served everything as soon as it was done; but her kids were at the table next to me messily eating noodles and playing with toys. The youngest boy was really loud at times and I felt bad for the waitress. I understand a babysitter can be hard to find, but I don't want to see and hear the kiddos at the restaurant like I did. The chef is quick and makes the sushi rolls really fast. Just not very well. They are sloppy with gobs of rice. My sashimi was flavorless and the salmon skin in my roll was cold and hard. Perhaps I would have been better off ordering a roll covering up the fish flavor in sauces and frying, that might be what's good here. But I don't want to try this place again. read more

I did like the salmon roll, the salmon was fatty and good. The only thing that put me off wsa again, the rice. They drew little dolphins on my plate and a dragon on the hubby's dragon roll. I tried this place for a late lunch, based on many of the other reviews. First, the atmosphere is perfect. Between the decor and the lighting, you really feel as if you've entered a whole other place. It's beautifully done. From the outside the place doesn't look like much, so it's a lovely surprise when you get inside. I was undecided, so I went with the sushi regular combination. 8 pieces (chef's choice, but sadly nothing of surprise) and a California roll. It came with a pretty standard miso soup. The sushi itself was quite good. Some places overly chill their fish to deaden the flavor. Here it stood on its own and was quite tasty. The service was good (friendly & unobtrusive) and on the whole I'm quite happy. If my only gripe is that I'd like a little more variety on the most generic combo possible, then they're doing it well. read more

I came here last Friday (8th), after work. I had a taste for Japanese Fried Rice. I was greeted and seated promptly when I walked in and the hostess was friendly. I ordered the fried rice with shrimp and I asked if there were peas and carrots (don't like either) in the rice and the hostess said, "No." but she did say that there was green peppers in the rice. Green peppers?? I've had Japanese Fried Rice many times but never with green bell peppers. Anyway, I figured it couldn't be too bad so I ordered. I also ordered the spicy shrimp roll. Both dishes were not that great IMO. However, the rice had a good amount of shrimp. It just seemed to lack flavor just as the spicy shrimp roll did. I'm not sure if I'm willing to go back. I have tried most of the sushi places here in Hampton Roads, and this by far has been loyal and true to their tastes compared to other restaurants. Oishi has great lunch specials and delicious hand rolls! I visited Oishi with my husband on a recent visit to Chesapeake. We frequent a nearby sushi restaurant, but opted for Oishi when our default was closed during Saturday lunch hours. After reading Yelp reviews for alternative sushi restaurants, we chose Oishi. I am glad we did!! We shared a variety of five different rolls and enjoyed them all! Regarding ambiance, the restaurant is very clean and the decor is tasteful. Its a great place for a sushi date with friends or your significant other. We will return to Oishi in a future visit to Chesapeake. read more

The flavors in the miso soup were worth raving about, however the tofu was too soft. So it was terribly mushy and I had to eat (sip) around it. But this is a sushi spot, which I really liked. I'm happy I did. I thought the service here was excellent and the wait staff energetic. Gyoza was definitely hand made, not the cheapy frozen kind. You get at some places. The Nigiri was tasty, but I thought a bit small. The roll I had more than made up for it though. My recommendations....get the Salmon Nigiri and the Christmas Tree roll.
