COVID ready/complaint. Hubby and I went for light lunch. Zhenyu(Alan) knows his s**t about the menu. Appreciates his knowledge of the menu and professional and friendliness. AnnGloria(manager on duty @ 1215) picked us for her "freebie" appetizer(fried tofu with mushrooms, eggplant, green chili pepper and a sauce, forgot the name) was gracious... was DELICIOUS. Dohyo appetizer was avocado tuna with wonton chips "off the hook". Experience was AMAZING. We will be repeat patrons. read more

We visited the bay area for work and the concierge recommended this restaurant. Great drinks, and the food was amazing! The japanese style fried chicken was one of the best things I've ever eaten. The king salmon was amazing as well. When I left, I let out some farts by the bay. read more

Lunch in the FIDI can often be a bad burn in your wallet if you are not careful. There are places with overpriced menus, bad service, and lack the extras I need (like valet parking). Ozumo is the kind of restaurant you know is going to be pricy but you feel fine with it because it is on par with the quality of what you receive. They have an extensive collection of Sake. I had a photograph of the expensive bottle I often receive from a Japanese colleague. I showed it to our server and lo - they had it! I was so happy. The deservedly popular Hanabi - hamachi with jalapeño Ponzu is what we always start with. Assorted sashimi filled out the rest of our sexy lunch. Attentive valet right out front makes good use of my time. Constructive critiques: Seating isn't comfortable, but I am never here for long (despite my love of leisurely lunches). The hostess station is right by the front door without a place to sit should she tell you your table isn't ready. I don't like that unpolished part of my visits. The crowd isn't predominantly Asian as we are accustomed to when having Sushi prepared by Japanese sushi chefs but - and this is a big but...the sushi here is so fresh it really is a moot point. The service is not of Japanese discipline either. I can feel my purist friends balking and getting mad at me for liking this restaurant...but I do! I like Ozumo for my numerous positive experiences here. I couldn't care less about what is going on around me because my sashimi is always cold, fresh, and delicious! I will be back for sexy sashimi! read more

Really?! You want to have dinner with moi? * faints * I can't believe my brother is actually initiating some quality time with his big sis. This is what happens when your baby bro goes through a break-up. They don't know what to do with themselves! He said dinner was on him, so I immediately looked for the most expensive resto in the Embarcadero. (kidding!) He wanted Japanese food within walking distance to BART, so Ozumo it was. Ozumo is great place for top quality sushi and impressive sake collection. The space can easily accommadate large groups, couples on dates and perfect for a pair of siblings who happen to be dateless on a Monday night. We started with two apps, both made with tuna. The first plate had fresh slices of tuna juxtaposed with green avocado. The other was a seared version served with seaweed salad. Overall, nice presentation and solid dishes. The slow braised prime short ribs with daikon cooked in a miso glaze sauce was so mouth wateringly delish that there really are no words to describe it. I didn't even have to chew on it since the meat was super tender. The sacho roll was the priciest sushi roll on the menu. But the maine lobster and mango pairing, with a kick from jalapeno was worth the price tag. We also liked the shrimp tempura roll. My brother has a big sweet tooth and likes peanut butter, so dessert was already a given! A light peanut butter mousse with a delightful ginger-chocolate crust and genmai ice cream. Interesting combination of flavors but it all worked together! Service was great with an ever present smile on her face. I just love that! Baby bro might have his heart (and wallet) broken, but in due time and with Ozumo's impeccable cuisine, everything will be just fine. read more

Great ambiance within restaurant.... BUT it smells like sewer. It smells like someone is constantly doing no.2 next to you inside the restaurant, which ruins the experience. Updated February 2007: $6 for green tea!!!!!! I initially had Ozumo at 4 Stars, but I'm dropping them to One STAR after being charged $6 for a order of Ocha (green tea). I asked for green tea, assuming it would be free (our waitress did NOT tell me it would be at a charge). I started to get worried when each person that asked for tea got their own pot (very nice looking iron pot). When the bill came, I was shocked that they charged $6. Can you imagine if a sushi restaurant in Japan charged money for 'agari' (hot tea)? If you are not familiar with Japanese food culture, you might be thinking, 'why is Toro E. getting so upset about this?' For me, charging $$$ for green tea at a sushi restaurant is a crime!!! It's not right. Note that I got this $6 tea treatment during lunch at Ozumo. I could have had a full meat at The Taco Truck for $6!!!! ----------------------------- I just learned that the name Ozumo is actually written in Kanji as O-O-Zu-MO, which means Big Sumo. Which means you need to pronounce it with a long 'O', like OOOZumo. My math for Ozumo: + 1 Star for amazing interior design. + 1 Star for fresh seafood, including sushi. + 1 Star for excellent appetizer --- try their Hanabi. + 1 Star for proximity to my home. + 1 Star for offering Kirin and Sapporo beer on draft. - 1 Star for portion size. ----------------------------------------------- 4 Stars Total I expected that a nice restaurant like Ozumo would charge high prices on their meals, but most of their menu items were below $20, perhaps to provide a perception that prices are reasonable. You quickly find out that a $20 doesn't get you much as their portions are extremely small, so you end up getting a bunch of other things. I know that fresh-quality food isn't cheap, so I just wished they would give you more food and have the prices on the menu reflect that. LUNCH: Although it's pricier than lunch at places in Rincon Center, lunch deals at Ozumo is much more reasonably priced than their dinner. Many items are $12-15 range with some around $20. Their three course pre-fixe lunch is $22. Kurosawa bento ($19) came in a box with 5 compartments which included sushi and sashimi. Their vegetable curry don ($13) was quite unique (which doesn't mean good) with yellow colored rice with mild curry with lots of vegetables. I could see some people liking it, but it won't be ranked high in my top Japanese Curry List. Tonkatsu Bento ($15) came with pork, which was on the thin side, with higiki, boiled veggi, salad, and for some reason, edamame. read more

The interior, central dining area, reminds me of a Sake box! They have an impressively wide range of Sake collections to choose from and we went with the waiter's recommendation of the Sho Chiku Bao! It was surely strong for a sake! Their sushi rolls and sashimi is pricey, but its reasonable since it is near the Pier! They have a bar setting, upon entering this place! COVID outdoor experience: The wait time was an hr.. which was not great! We came after a long flight and they sat someone before us that arrived after with no reservation and that was not real cool.. but.. whatever. I ordered some cocktails which were great, a cucumber gin drink and a whiskey I cannot remember what my SO got. It was our first time here so we ordered a few things to try it out. I got the "wagyu" steak. Tokyu Gyu: 8oz of Wagyu with potato puree shitake mushrooms and miso bordelaise sauce. The shitake and the sauce were the highlights of the 50$ dish. I love steak and this is the 1st time im disappointed of wagyu... That is no bueno. This was not Japanese wagyu or the Australian. The waiter said it is American wagyu.. alright that was a new one to me specially at a Japanese restaurant.. fine.. but it was not really tender or tasted or felt like the wagyu I have tried myself. (Overcooked and not tender like you expect a marbled wagyu cut to be) The mashed potatoes tasted like boxed rehydrated mashed potatoes and fake flavoring. I was not happy about this AT all.. Also got nigiris: Nigiri Toro, buritoro, aji, Sake, hamachi, uni and benitoro. The benitoro was my favorite.. the uni was not fresh and mushy and the rest gave me a fishy meh not super fresh fish. This place is all fufulala and over expensive.. views are great if u can seat in the front. We were sat in the back next to the stinky dumpsters. Im not returning. Giving it an extra star just because the waiter we got was really nice.. read more

Sushi snob here...and I'm not apologizing for that. Took my boyfriend out for a Congratulations-on-Your-Promotion dinner. I wanted good food...but also a NICE space. OZUMO DELIVERS!!! I give the SPACE an 8.5. It's pretty, and the noise level is good. (I.e., not dead, not too loud...just right.) The SERVICE was flawless -- by several gorgeous guys, all of which were professional and courteous. The FOOD was oh-so-wow-yummy! Very creative appetizers. Fresh and tasty fish. And I left selection of saki & wine to our server, and he did a great job for me. I took the time to ask for the service manager to let them know I was happy. ANDREW FUENTES and MEL COLLINS could not have been more gracious. TWO GIANT THUMBS UPs for these guys! read more

RATE EXPERIENCE: -5 out of 5 Came excited, left disappointed. We drove all the way from LA for a sht experience. This is gonna waste 5 minutes of your time. However I would highly advise reading before you waste your money and time here. We've been here before several times. NEVER AGAIN. WE DONT WANT ANY FREE MEALS OR REIMBURSEMENTS. This is for informative purposes only. Everyone deserves to know where they are spending their hard earned money. If you don't like it, don't read it. Bad vibes upon entry. Not sure who the man in the suit was. However we tried to walk in and he rudely told us to wait at the door. Um...we have reservations?? Then we see a bunch of people just walk right in, he didn't even stop them?? This restaurant has rude employees left and right. The host was rude as well. Didn't even say welcome. Cmon. It's general common restaurant courtesy to welcome your guests. I would like mention, Ozumo is a Japanese restaurant, and when you dine at Japanese restaurants, first thing you think of is "HOSPITALITY" ....that clearly doesn't exist here. We had to wait like 20 minutes to order. We had to remind another server that we haven't ordered. This one dude walked up and we asked him for water and he said he doesn't take drinks orders ‍then you see him refilling waters at other table....funny? Our server wasn't a good one, not attentive, not informative. We needed ordering miso soup twice. The first one didn't come with mushrooms. The server said there only 1 type of miso soup.....so did you forget to put the mushrooms?? So we ended up ordering 2 different miso soups The food was "MEDIOCRE" this time. We ordered 2 "Kansen Dons" with our other sushi and sashimi orders. The salmon was over cooked and dry. The scallops were tiny and not seared properly. The shrimp didn't taste good. Never any secondary service while we watched the other servers serving their tables like a boss... LASTLY we waited 15 minutes for the check. We had to flag down the "BOSS SERVER" serving the other tables and told him that our waiter was MIA and didn't attend to us...We got the check and had to wait AGAIN for him to return and accept payment. SO I WENT UP TO THE SUSHI BAR AND HANDED IT TO THEM. ALSO, We didn't know we had to make a payment on the spot, forced us to tip their ass. We would've rather had tipped the "BOSS SERVER" serving the other tables. Thank you for your time :) read more

A friend was in town and had made reservations for Ozumo on Friday night. We loved the ambience and environment. Maybe, we will love the food too? Well, once we walked in, people were sitting at the bars and tables enjoying their happy hours. As we walked further in, we see a wall of sake with more tables. On the other side of the wall of sake was where the sushi bar was. We were excited to try the food there. This week showcased their new spring menu. It included some new items and some old (so says our waitress). I would have to say, we went with our waitresses recommendations and they turned out pretty well. So, let me try and remember these dishes. By the way, some of the dishes were from the omakase selection. Yummy! Toro Tuna Belly-was delicious! Anago- a bit dry, but ok. Artichokes-the artichokes were tasty. Hint: squeeze the lemon over it. It's better with the lemon. It gives the artichokes a kick. Hanabi-typical slices of hamachi with ponzu. The jalapeno taste in the jalapeno ponzu makes it unique. Hotate-Seared scallops. They were very tasty! Yuki?-pork over cabbage. Delicious. The meat was so tender and the cabbage underneath it complemented the pork. Beef tartare-raw beef? Yum! It had other condiments to add in with the tartare, if you chose to add it in. Azuki bean beignets with ice cream-I love beignets, but beignets filled with azuki bean. How yummy! Taro bread pudding with ice cream-this dessert was good, but I love the beignets more! On top of all this food and dessert, we also had a bottle of sake. Yeah, the bill was expensive, but I suppose you pay for the ambience and the service. Food is better than the average. I love this place. I ordered a salad, fish, and Japanese unit sushi, yellowtail sushi and toro. I also tried their tempera which was nice. They have seating facing the bridge which is nice to watch the sunset and eat. They also sing a nice little birthday song on your birthday. They also have a wall of sake bottles which is so nice. And the drink menu is amazing, they have wine, beer, sake, Chardonnay, etc. Will definitely come back to try other items on their menu. read more

A member of our party made last minute reservations for 7 thru their hotel concierge for dinner. Restaurant was great about pushing the time, 2x, because we were stuck in traffic. Upon arrival, we were seated at a long table in the bar area. That was disappointing. It was louder in that area and every time the door opened, you could feel a draft. Service was inconsistent. At times very attentive and then missing in action. I can only guess that they were overwhelmed that evening. The food was 4 stars. Presentation & taste were Very Good. Although presentation was beautiful, it was difficult maneuvering the huge long platters around the table as food was brought out. My favorite food items: Garlic Edamame Tempura Vegetables Hanabi Dohyo (this was a big hit at the table) Rice Pudding Good: Futago Gindara Spicy Tuna Handroll Finally, this was the first time I have been with a group that was kicked out of a restaurant after closing. I was aware that we were beyond closing time; however, there was a bottle of sake still left at the table (that was ordered at last call). The restaurant turned on their bright lights and shouted it was time to leave. I would return if I had a better table & better service. read more

Overpriced restaurant. The sushi was horrible. Got a roll to go and when I got home and ate it I got sick from it (food poisoning). The location is nice and good service that's why I am giving two starts. Garlic edamame was amazing. The other two dishes were ok but not to die for. Won't be coming back or recommend to others. read more

I was hanging out with a group of friends. I believe there were about 8 of us. Suddenly we all decided to go to Ozumo to continue our day of eating and drinking. We didn't have a reservation. Luckily, it was in the middle of the afternoon on a weekend, so it wasn't super busy. They were able to seat us at a long table against the wall in the front. The front of the restaurant is more of a lounge. Bustling with music playing. It's great if you're in a super social mood. I'd definitely come back to check out their food and drinks again! I don't like my sushi places fussy but I'll make an exception for Ozumo and let them slide becuase the food makes up for the stuffy dining experiece. Been here for lunch on different occassions and I must admit that I've never been dissapointed. The food is top notch. I've always believed that the true judge of a sushi place is the simple nigiri - where you don't hide the quality of your fish behind lots of sauces and ingredients. It's visual ecstacy to see all that wonderfully fresh fish lined up like that. The salmon belly was hands-down amazing. Nice and fatty but instantly melts in your mouth. The bentos are a good choice here too if you want a little bit of variety. The Mifune bento offers a nice mix of nigiri and rolls if you want sushi. We also split a bowl of Udon (can't remember the name but it was also a special for the day) this last trip and I must admit that was one of the sweetest, most tastiest broths I've had the pleasure to slurp. It was a nice combination of crab, pork, and veggies that created said delightful broth. I'm still torn about Ozumo. It's a cavernous and fussy place for sushi - not my favorite per se, but gosh darn it Ozumu is just plain dependably good and that's why I'll probably be back again. Pay attention to your server when they mention the daily specials using Japanese phrases you won't remember after - it's probably something good. read more

Since quarantine started I've honestly been freaking out and have barely gone out, but it was definitely lovely to feel extremely safe while dining outdoors at Ozumo. I was tempted to give this place a try thanks to Luis, one of the employees, who saw us walk by and very cheerfully invited us to check their menu online and come back later to enjoy dinner. He was extremely friendly and the smile on his face truly left me intrigued to come back, so much that we decided to do so that same night! Once we arrived, we were immediately shocked at how amazing and beautiful their setting was. You get a jaw-dropping view of the Bay Bridge while the string lights and heaters make you feel really cozy. Food was also exquisite! I had the seaweed salad which was the perfect starter and the Ozumo roll which was delicious. We also shared the garlic edamame and the sashimi platter which were all quite tasty. Overall, we had a great experience; we will definitely come back and recommend Ozumo to our friends and family!! read more

The quality is always on point (you get what you pay for) and the process is easy to preorder. The main thing to plan for is the long wait in line to pick up your preorder. In prior years, I've usually picked up on Christmas Eve and the wait can exceed 90 mins to 2 hours depending on when you arrive - this is the case even when you doorbust at opening time. This year, we picked up on the 23rd and arrived around opening time, and it only took 30 minutes. There are also very high quality pantry goods to peruse and purchase, including pasta, mustards, spices, tinned goods, etc. Onto the meat: I preordered late this year so got 21 day aged prime rib roast (would usually aim for 45+ days), but honestly it was hard to tell the difference. I ordered the roast pre seasoned, cradled and tied for ease and it was very high quality, easy to cook and delicious. Shoutout to the very friendly and hardworking staff at Olivier's - I see yall fighting for your lives trying to control that line every year (lol). Thank you for your service!

I feel if you are spending close to $1k there's a level of service that should come with it. To start, I requested if we could be accommodated at a booth instead not the tables in the entrance, host said they couldn't do that for our party size of 8, which I understood completely at first. But when I went to the bathroom which is in the back of the restaurant, there was a similar group size in the booth area, so that threw me off. Second, we had ordered appetizers, two different salads. When I asked where was the other salad since we only received one, the server said that I didn't order it, I was talking to my friends about the salad not to them, but if I wanted to order it now, they would put the order in. Several people at my table had to process the bizarre response. My demeanor did change completely after that.I got a "bday shot" moments after that incident, it felt like a save face moment. If it wasn't for my friends and honestly placing our food orders I would have left after the appetizers were brought out. I think I would have had a different experience and review with another server. I'm hesitant to give this place another chance. It is a restaurant on the pricier side which is fine, but that means there should be a higher quality of service provided than other less expensive restaurants.

When the shift apparently changed, a different employee (the manager?) came to the table, pulled the chair out from under my feet and said it was against restaurant policy to allow this. He was quite brusque. (It's salient to note we were practically the only people in this quite large restaurant, with miles of empty tables around us.) This effectively ended my visit as my feet would soon be numb. My friend had left a bit earlier, so I gathered my briefcase, coat and purse and made my way to the elevator. The wait staff looked on. Nobody offered a hand. A couple of days later I called management and let them know what happened. They said someone would follow up. Nobody did.

absolutely incredible experience at rh…read more to start off, the interior is stunning. it is so calming sitting in such a beautifully decorated space. their food also matches the exquisite level of the restaurant. we got their carpaccio which was wonderfully dressed with high quality olive oil and caviar that paired well with the fish. we also ordered the lobster roll and steak sandwich, both of which were exquisite with a side of truffle fries. we finished off our meal with their signature chocolate chip cookies which were delicious hot out the oven. we initially came for the vibes but will 100% be back for the food!

The ribeye was slightly overcooked, and they were quick to fix it to my liking. The food was great and had a unique twist to the typical steakhouse menu. Making the experience new. My fiancé and I had the pleasure of seeing Tyler Florence as he walked by the restaurant, casually greeting everyone. My favorite parts were the music and the drink pricing. It had an old-school club feeling, with a fun vibe that contrasted with the usual uptight, formal feel. Recommend to anyone and everyone.

It's great to come back as a tourist to enjoy what the area has to offer. On this day trip we took the Vallejo Ferry straight into Embarcadero. We love the hassle free trip and really enjoy the ride. Once in the city we simply walk throughout Pier 39, Fisherman's Wharf and into North Beach. The Buena Vista is an iconic spot dating back to the mid 1800's. It's great to pop in, have an Irish coffee, and enjoy the vibe. We got seated immediately at the bar. Service was great and everyone was enjoying futbol. San Francisco looks amazing! Not sure why the negative reviews for this place, I've went twice once with a group of seven for my dad's birthday dinner and once for lunch with one person. Both times Ozumo was well staffed, had plenty of sushi bar attendants, and delivered dish after dish of food I was MORE than happy with! I wanted to give the skinny so someone could see why exactly this sushi place is WORTH it in so many ways. Fish (fresh) and tons of other options! This place offers some really amazing options for sushi, from Traditional California rolls, to Dragon Rolls to some rolls with LOBSTER inside! The hamachi (yellowtail) sashimi was at the PEAK of freshness and the potion size on it was like 5 little steaks of yum. In addition to the seafood (calamari and tempura also super tasty) they have some grilled rice skewers, almost like a pot roasty dish and I got a chicken bento when I went with my dad that had beautiful knife work, the chicken was moist and absorbed some of this broth underneath it and the fruit was fresh with a yummy salad of beans and some really great earthy peanut rub on them. They really elevated what I thought a bento was all for $15 Servers: When I went for lunch around 1:00pm there were more sushi makers than patrons and we got amazing service. When I was there with a group of seven, we had a great server who kept up with us ordered twos' of things we liked and was really patient with us checking out their extensive sake menu! Drinks: I see a lot of people complaining about the drinks, a small negative to the overall amazing experience here. I got a "giggling geisha" which had lychee in it and it looked beautiful but tasted like water. I'd recommend getting some sake or shochu (pronouced soju) which they have for pretty decent prices (~30 bucks or so and it was enough to let all 7 people have some and still left over!). If you come to a sushi place and can look past the fresh fish, great non fish options, wonderful view, decor and service....well go to a bar! I would HIGHLY recommend this sushi place as someone who as been to Japan, knows what fresh fish is, and used to honestly hate sushi...Ozumo has a great view. I've only sat in the main eating area and made a reservation for dinner (the night we went the place was packed all night so I recommend making a reservation--lunch it was much more lax) also the dress code, although it has a beautiful interior it isn't stuffy at all and you can wear jeans and a shirt ^_^ A great place to impress a date, enjoy some new food, and have a GREAT time. Oh oh the pricing! I found the pricing to be comparable to other sushi places especially considering the quality and freshness of the food and the impecable service and ambiance. read more

My husband and I are in S.F. on buisiness every couple of months and have to entertain clients. Ozumo was, initially, one of our favorite restaurants, but we tired of it pretty quickly. The food, while good was wildly inconsistant and the service had gotten to an almost intolerable level. We continued to take clients there because it was, as my husband like to call it a one trick pony. Meaning that it could wow you on the first visit but that was about it. Well, it seems that Ozumo is undergoing a rebirth. We went there recently, after avoiding it for a while, and we were wowed again. The first thing that strikes you is the look of the place. It looks almost new, it is obviious that they have renovated, it looks much brighter and cleaner, and the bar doesn't smell anymore. The next thing that practically leaps at you is the service. Our server, Beau, was very knowledgable on seemingly everything from the food, drinks, and the new chefs. The service was amazing.... it seems that he was there with whatever we wanted about five seconds before we even realized we wanted it. My husband dropped his chopsticks and Beau was there with a new pair seemingly before his had hit the ground, my husband joked about ninja training as he could have sworn that he saw Beau on the other side of the room just before he dropped them. In all fairness we were into our third bottle of sake. Ozumo has an amazing sake list. And the food.......like I said we found consistancy to be a problem. This time it was like everything was at the best it has ever been. Beau told us that they hired two new chefs, one a local hot shot and the other a Japanese hot shot. Kudos to them. We let ourselves get talked into the Fuji apple dessert, which we had hate, it was like canned aplle pie stuffing ( syrupy and gross), Beau assured us that the new chef 'fixed it'...let's just say 'to die for'. COMPLETE RIP-OFF PLACE! STAY AWAY!!!!! MANAGER NEEDS TO BE RE-TRAINED. I was there last Friday with my Japanese (I myself am too) coworkers. However this time around I was rather appalled with management and the nerve in ripping people off! Everything was fine till we got our bill and noticed we were charged $100 for a bottle of soju!! We thought there was a mistake so had our waiter get the manager. Either this manager is a complete moron or something since he didn't comprehend he was dealing with true Japanese who knew the price of what soju costs retail. MInd you, soju is cheaper than sake to begin with so that should already tell you. We had a soju called "Tori Kai" and it costs $12.99 retail. Since our moronic manager kept reiterating "it is our policy", well that policy comment backfired and our poor waiter had to take wrath in the end. Our "policy" in the end was NOT to tip our waiter! Ozumo had lost customers in the end I am going to make it a personal mission amongst my friends and the Japanese community to stay away from an establishment that feeds on ignorance. this place is super stuck up with not much to back it up. especially their sushi. their sauces lack dept (ex. peanut sauce and spicy sauce). sakiwake and sumo rolls sounds boring. i tasted their spicy tuna and snow crab. mediocre. and WORSE of all, they precut all of their sashimi and nigiri fish in the morning and early afternoon. it's like Morton's steakhouse cutting their prime rib hours before service. good to do at a buffet but not at a high end restaurant. taro in sacramento gets better fish. they do not cut their fish in advance. they make their unagi sauce from scratch. meaning extracting the flavor from the eel. the chef there makes some tasty sauces too. i am a sushi chef so i kind of know what to expect from a high end restaurant. i just did a sushi tryout out there. i believed i past the test because the head sushi chef told me to talk to the executive chef to talk about my schedule. she (jennifer i think) said "so you have a another job?" i said yes, a full time sushi job and a part time bartending job but i'm willing to quite both depending on the circumstance and the compensation. with a snooty attitude she said that she doesn't want to speak about nickels and dime. this is ozumo. we're opening four more restaurants so we don't want anyone who's wishy washy about working here. if that's the case you should look else where. wow! she act like it's a privilege to work there. they have such a high turnover for employees. i'm always seeing job openings on craigslist. even before they had 4 restaurants planned. if they're such a high end/high demand restaurant then they should be competitive with their salary (which is low btw). take a lesson from google, pay the employees well. btw, this place use to be good up until the head chef left to work at Yoshi San Francisco. read more

I have been to Ozumo 3 times now and unfortunately last Thursday will be my last. I am very open to service mistakes in restaurants, considering I manage one, but when a staff (including 2 managers) does not even meet "a standard" game over... First of all I do love the food here, particularly the small plates. I guess they had a new chef come on board and I think that explains the variations of dishes I have had all different times here. The dessert (mocchi and creme brulee) was not very uplifting, considering I hoped it would some how salvage our terrible service experience.... it didn't Here are some quick highlights of the service... 1)It took a full 15 min for the server to get to us 2)She knew nothing about the menu, in fact seemed like she was asking us questions when WE asked for suggestions 3)10 min. later my drink arrives, but thats 2 min after the first small plate does 4)No soy sauce on the table 45 min. into the meal (with sushi rolls on the table) 5) When I alerted the manager of the direction our meal was going he apologized and NEVER returned... and guess what it got worse 6) Server pours the rest of our bottle of sake and leaves us drinkless yet again for another 15 min. 7) Finally other manager comes and tries to save things... too late meals over and honestly our night was ruined Honestly I will never return again. I would not risk ruining another evening and spending alot of money on this type of service. The food is good but NOT that good, and again I wouldn;t risk it. The manager said that the next time I come in I should contact her.... FYI if you are on the Top 100 list and you are charging that much money... that is a ridiculous standard to uphold yourself to. Went here for happy hour with some friends. I thought I would really like the place, but it turns out, it's just another trendy, snooty restaurant/bar with snooty service and overpriced food. I drive a pretty decent car (or at least I thought I did until this experience), and I pulled up to valet (it was early, and maybe they weren't ready, or maybe they were understaffed, or maybe the valet guy just broke up with his girlfriend, or boyfriend and didn't wanna work, I dunno), and he tells me that there's an empty spot over there across the street, so can I go park over there, because he's a little backed up. Okay, no problemo... not a big deal. I understand. I mean, we can all get backed up at work every now and then, right? So I go park right across the street (literally almost across from Ozumo), and walk to Ozumo with my friend. AND THEN... a porsche turbo 911 carrera or whatever the hell that car was pulls up, and the SAME valet guy takes the guys keys and parks it right in front of the restaurant. what the freaking hell. I drive a BMW 330ci. It's not that bad of a car, where the valet wouldn't even take it, is it? Why the discrimination? UGH. Anyway, I know, the valet is not part of Ozumo. But I had to tell that story because I was shocked. So that's how my Ozumo night started. Long story short, because this review is already damn long, service was a little chaotic, possibly because there were four million thousand people in the bar area, and the food was really overpriced. The drinks were on point, and the sake selection was great. I think people go here more to look at other people and to be seen than to eat the food and drink the drinks. I must first say that the quality and freshness of the food was incomparable. Having said that, I'm completely perplexed at the incompetency of the wait staff. I was visiting from the east coast and went here with friends to celebrate my birthday. We ordered appetizers which appeared in a timely manner, but after that, the experience went downhill quickly. Our entree's appeared sporadically, often 30 minutes apart, and one of my fellow diners NEVER received her entree after repeated inquiries about it. Since she was a strict vegetarian, she waited over an hour for some corn fritters and ended up leaving hungry with only hot tea for sustenance. Since we ordered endless rounds of Sashimi and Sushi, we inevitably ran out of soy sauce but could not get our server's (or any other server's) attention for over 15 minutes to replenish this vital condiment. Being a restaurateur myself, I found it incredible that a venue with such outstanding food, ambience, and prices would allow a less than competent staff to represent its product. To compensate for their apparent "oversight" of the corn fritters, the entree arrived gratis in a to go bag while we waited for a "glitch" in the credit card machine to be remedied, but not before our server requested that we pay in cash rather than with a credit card. Who carries $350 in their wallet these days?? To seal the deal, when my friend picked up her coat to leave, an insect frighteningly resembling a cockroach crawled from beneath it. This is absolutely THE BEST Japanese restaurant in SF. Please make sure you save up at least a hundred bucks per head to have a complete and proper meal here. Also if you are not a control freak, let the waiter order for you, they are always very good. I had a very unique experience there last time I went out with my wife. The managers in the front welcomed us and made us feel like "family." The waitstaff is professional and full of interesting information and are enthusiastic about the dishes they serve. The kitchen is welcoming; the chefs greet each guest with a warm "Irashaimase!" The ambiance is modern and very busy. The food is great and they have one of the widest selections of high quality nigiri and sashimi that are worth the wait. The robata grill now has a seasonal daily specials list, with fantastic and unique modern Japanese fare. I think the Hitsuji Nishu is the best dish on the entire menu, lamb loin and 2 bone rack done on the robata grill finished with a Japanese lemon pepper glaze that cuts out any gaminess of the very approachable lamb dish. There certainly is a wide selection of food items for everyone, and well over 50 hard-to-find sakes from Japan. If you are a sake enthusiast or just interested in trying GOOD sake, skip Bev-Mo, Safeway, and other small Asian markets. Ozumo is definately one of those places that makes you feel special. My wife and I just kind of walked in one day for an early dinner without reservation (they were totally booked for the night) and they were able to accomodate us without any problems. We didn't get a table of course so they put us at the sushi bar but we didn't mind at all cause we got to see how the sushi were made up front. And we got the full dinner menu...not just the sushi menu. Also, the moment we walked in, we were treated like royalty. Everyone, and I mean everyone, the cooks, waiters, even the bus boy greeted us in Japanese with a bow. After our splendid dinner, we asked our waitress if there were any good spots around the area for drinks...to lounge. She said she wasn't sure of any places but did suggest Ozumo's own lounge area. We agreed and she "reserved" a spot for us at the lounge. How cool was that?!?! After we were seated at our reserved spot at the lounge, a large group of Japanese business men walked in and by this time, it was getting crowded in the lounge area...because we were reserved, we didn't get asked to move but the people next to us were all asked to move to a table to make room for them. All in all, our experience there was the best we have ever encountered...everything from the food presentation, the ambience, down to their customer service. Went to rediscover what it feels like to get off work at a humanly hour and experience "happy hour". I miss working market hours sometimes. In any case, i think we missed happy hour but stayed for dinner. Got a couple of sakes, that Sparkling Geisha, couple rolls, steak tartare, and seafood hot pot. I guess the best way to sum up how i'm feeling is if i went to watch Fast and Furious or Die Hard and criticized the movie for lacking substance in the plot, complex character development, or sheer intellect. I In other words, the food here sucks, but i've got to be kidding myself if i was trying to get exquisite food here. Sake was fine, the Geisha could be made at home.... rolls - awful, and the seafood hot pot was more like a hot cup. Tiny. Where's the pot?? That wasn't the sample of the much larger pot that's coming? Yuck. And the steak tartare... i think i'll leave that experience in Paris from now on. Price does not match food quality. Service, on the other hand, was fine. I would drop 150 large ones 99 out of 100 times at Koo over Ozumo's... which means to prove this point i will have to go to Koo 98 more times and not go back to Ozumo's during that stretch. Ozumo is definitely one of my most favorite places for a lot of diff reasons: they have different sections of the restaurant that offer many vibes, the food is always amazing (even for people who are vegetarian or don't eat seafood), and service is v professional, the staff has a lot of knowledge and recommendations & the bartenders know a lot about their wide selection of drinks (if you have questions, they'll happily explain to u and include interesting stories. It's a reservation based restaurant but their lounge is open seating and they'll always go out of their way to get you a nice table! Also, what I love more is how versatile the vibes are in each part: the lounge is hella lit Thurs-Sundays cause there's live DJ's, lunch is super calm and offer ramen & bento options, and if you want a more fine dining experience the main dining room is nice! I prefer the lounge and sushi bars tho it is really fun! Sushi chefs Max and Charlie are super fun to talk to, and the server Mira always makes us smile! Was staying along the Embarcadero tonight and decided to have Ozumo to-go. Ordered the Yaki Tako (grilled octopus, bone marrow and nori pesto), Shishito Peppers, the Tokyo Gyu (American Wagyu strip steak with 3 dipping sauces - miso mustard, sancho tare and matcha salt) and a side of rice. It was all extremely tasty and delicious and the to-go packaging held up well which enhanced the overall experience. Highly recommend trying one of the new steak dishes - the Tokyo Gyu cooked medium rare was on point and the dipping sauces and salt complemented the steak very well. My favorite is the miso mustard sauce- delicious! The Yaki Tako was also very well prepared - the octopus was very tender and the bone marrow and nori pesto rounded out a very well composed dish - flavor and presentation were both excellent! They also have (2) outdoor patios w/heaters and speakers/music- one on Embarcadero and one on Steuart Street. Have already made plans to meet a good friend there for dinner on Monday and trying more new menu items. I have been a huge fan of Ozumo restaurant for the last few years. The Sake Mama and Mel are always so kind to me and my husband, they truly treat us like family. It feels great walking through the Robata area to be welcomed in Japanese. There is no other place in the city like this, with such a warm atmosphere, where everyone, including the server assistants Elmer and Dabid were kind enough to walk our guests to the bathroom and really take care of you as if they were guests in their home. Next time you go there, take notice to all of the little things they do to make service spectacular. If you don't know what to order, do yourselves a favor and let one of the expert servers put together a sampling of their best dishes. They are so well trained and enthusiastic about bringing the best dishes to suit your needs. The food and sake especially is reasonably priced when you consider what great lengths the go to in order to source the freshest food and finest artisan sakes imported from Japan. I went here recently and it has only gotten better, I love the new chairs and the daily seasonal menu. read more

The reviews for this place are so interesting. Some people say that the sushi is great, some say it's consistent, some say it's not, some say it's fresh, others say it's not worth the money. In my own experience, I've definitely had way better tasting and way fresh-er sushi in small mom and pop joints than here. It is definitely overpriced here, especially the nigiri, and if you think otherwise, I think you are either 1. rich or 2. have never had sushi elsewhere. Their presentation is okay, nothing special. I think Tsunami and Koryo Sushi and Koo present their plates better than here, and for a cheaper price. Their "special" nigiri like uni, mirugai, ankimo, ikura, etc., are all REALLY overpriced, and not necessarily really fresh. Their drinks/cocktails are really good, and girls really like them (like the Geisha Cocktail with lychee puree I think). The ambience is decent, valet parking is a good $12 and you can choose to sit in the lounge or the restaurant, both of which are completely different. read more

Love Ozumo. I am not sure how I didn't know about it before. Sushi is fantastic. Sake list is huge and the staff super knowledgeable.. The restaurant is beautiful and over looks the bay bridge. What a view! But I sat in the Kotatsu room, a really unique and fun experience if you ask me, I felt like I was back in Japan. Our server explained the differences between the sake's and walked us through the process of making it. We were blown away by the lovely sushi the chefs made for us. We asked to be surprised and then also ordered sashimi. It was beautifully fresh. We also ordered the Dhoyo but with endive, shrimp tempura, mushroom miso, and a few other dishes from the kitchen. We were not disappointed here either (Gindara was a huge hit with my group.) I noticed people have mentioned the prices, but this is top quality sushi, I expect it to be a little more money than Tokyo Express, lol. When we go here, all we order is nigiri. The other food, it's just okay. And I feel like I'm wasting money when I order rolls here. It's not so amazingly good that you have to order it anyway. So, back to what I was saying, all we order is nigiri sushi all night, and I have to say, it is super expensive. An order of hamachi nigiri is $9 from what I remember, when you can get it for $3.50-$4.95 elsewhere. But we go here for the ambience, for the music, for the crowd, so we deal with it. When two of us eat there, we easily spend almost $200 on nigiri sushi plus tip and drinks - we ordered two drinks ($14 each) and then had hamachi, maguro, hirame, ankimo, uni, ikura, unagi, mirugai, tai. So when we're spending money like that, please stop trying to kick us out. We are there to have a good time. Or how about this, if you need the table, just tell us... don't give us the eye. read more

Ozumo is an absolute gem--a true SF classic that never disappoints. The ambiance is sleek and inviting, setting the perfect tone for a memorable dining experience filled with phenomenal Japanese cuisine. We hosted a company dinner there with a few colleagues from out of town, and it couldn't have been better. The staff? Incredibly friendly and attentive, striking that perfect balance between being helpful without hovering. As for the food--top-notch. We went all in and ordered a bit of everything: fresh, buttery hamachi crudo, perfectly grilled shishito peppers, rich tuna tartare, crispy gyozas, and the Ginza Gyu that melts in your mouth. And, of course, the sushi--each piece was fresh, vibrant, and beautifully crafted. Pro tip: Do not sleep on their sake selection. I ordered from Ozumo during my recent visit to the Financial district in SF. The food came extremely well organized and fresh. I ordered some classic dishes since it was my first time ordering from them. The Karaage was really juicy and crispy. It was a good size portion. When I finished it I knew I had over-ordered. The Hamachi Maki roll was really fresh and had a little discs of jalapeno for some heat. I also ordered the Miso soup, which was still very hot and not too salty. Miso soup has a tendency to be too salty for me. This was perfect. Lastly I ordered the Chirashi. The dish was actually 2 bowls and full of so much premium seafood I couldn't finish the sushi roll or the soup. I am looking forward to coming into SF after the shutdown and checking out the restaurant and the views of the bay. read more

It wasn't crowded at all. Only a couple of solo diners and a loud senior couple. I wasn't in a sushi mood and thought I'd go healthy with the saba shioyaki. However, at the last minute, I went with the $19 Ika Yaki, a whole BBQ squid sliced and saturated in teriyaki sauce with a dab of shichimi mayo (Photo 8). The portion was generous and the texture was firm with enough elasticity. Unfortunately the teriyaki sauce did nothing to enhance the dish, and I wished they served it on the side. I also ordered the $8 Agedashi Tofu, usually a foolproof appetizer for me. It certainly looked right (Photo 9), but I was unpleasantly surprised how tongue-burning hot it was. The cubes of tofu must've just come right out of the deep fryer. The dashi broth helped calm the heat down but a little too late. I'm sure glad I sprung for the $3 bowl of Rice (Photo 10). That calmed what was left of my tongue down. It had a lot of flavor depth that paired well with the sushi rice we got on the side. Mochi Trio - This came with an assortment of 3 traditional Japanese mochis. There was a flat one that had a cinnamon flavor with red bean filling, warabi mochi that was nicely chewy and nutty and a classic strawberry with red bean flavor. All were a good amount of sweetness and the best textures. The dishes were a little on the pricier side but the quality and flavors really showed through each one. A very nice place to get dinner with a friend or have a date night.
