If I could give it 0 stars, I would. I bought the Gateau du Chocolat cake for my husband's birthday party. I served it, and it tasted as if it were a few days old -- it was very dry! So disappointing! And it cost $40. I called to complain, and the woman I spoke with said I would get a refund. I went in, and the manager Maryella refused to give me a refund because I brought back only half the cake, and that this cake was supposed to be "dry". (Really??? Is that how you sell it? Buy this dry cake!) I asked what I was supposed to do? Bring back the half eaten pieces of cake? I would have preferred a delicious cake that night - I paid for THAT experience and didn't get it. I went to pick up some macarons, as I was going to all the different places I could to try to find the perfect macaron. These just might be them! The texture of their macarons was chewy on the inside and crisp on the outside. The shells were a combination of both glossy and matte; the way an eggshell colored for an Easter egg hunt would be. And let me tell you that these were just as special as finding that Easter egg hidden in the grass! All of them had perfectly formed ruffly pieds as well. The fillings were smooth and creamy. The macarons also melted in my mouth and were absolutely decadent! There is just no way to describe how delicate and wonderful these were. The selection of flavors they had was not large and they did not have many of each kind as well. I tried six of their flavors which I will review bellow. Some of the macarons were cracked and appeared to have been manhandled but not so much that I was put off by it. Chocolate- This was no ordinary chocolate macaron. The filling was a dark and slightly bitter ganache. The macaron itself was also chocolate flavored and somehow it was more like having a cup of dark chocolate cocoa than you would have thought possible with all the sugar needed to make a macaron. Coconut- Light, airy and subtly sweet. It was like taking a bite of a true coconut cake. There was a coconut creme filling with shredded coconut inside. The top of the macaron was adorned with little bits of dry sweetened coconut as well. Pistachio- These were a true pistachio color and taste. It was savory more than sweet and had a crisp taste which was refreshing. Caramel- While this was still a great macaron, it was probably my least favorite. The taste was that of caramelized sugar for the macaron shell itself and it was filled with what tasted like one of those hard caramel candies which are creamy caramel colored. A little too sweet for my tastes but it was so rich! Hazelnut- Wow. Just wow. The filling was a bittersweet hazelnut cream with the consistency of ganache. It melted in my mouth and the flavor of freshly cracked hazelnuts took over after the taste lingered in my mouth for a moment. There was nothing fake about the taste of this and it was a pure hazelnut taste. Earl Grey Tea with Chocolate- They made this one by putting together two different halves. One half was the chocolate I described above and some of its filling. The other half was an earl grey macaron. The shell had small black specks of tea baked into it and the cream was infused with the tea as well. I have had green tea with chocolate before but the pairing of Earl Grey with dark chocolate was one of the most exquisite things I have experienced. If possible some day I would like to have boxes of these to give out as party favors. Ratings from 0-5- Packaging- 3 I only purchased 6 macarons from here (major mistake!) and they had a box small enough so that they could all sit flat on their sides but not have too much room to get rattled. Taste- 5 All the flavors were absolutely mouth wateringly delectable! Size- 4 These macarons were the regular size in diameter but were filled quite well and were a bit tall. Price- 4 It was almost $12 (11.70) for 6. I wish it was a bit less expensive but for how great these tasted it was worth every penny! Overall-4 but I am upping these to a 5 because the macarons themselves are so wonderful and so worth it that I don't care too much about anything else!! I will most definitely be coming back here as soon as I can!! read more

the order. macarons ham & cheese croissant the ham & cheese croissant was stale and was at least a day old. they got it out of the refrigerator and didn't even offer to warm it up. but i will say that fresh, these are probably at least good. the outside crust of the croissant had crunchy cheese on it (well what was left of it after being refrigerated). the macarons were a let down. every macaron i had ( i had about 7 or 8) had the stale refrigerator air taste. college students know this best. the macarons have been sitting in that refrigerator for a while; either that or they need to change their refirgerator ventilation system because every macaron had the same stale taste. the flavors weren't as delicate as paulette's though the texture is comparable. however these are much pricier at a 1.95 per macaron. yikes! i might go back for the cakes, as the small stuff just didn't do it for me. read more

A good haul for $15! There was a vast array of pretty sweets, and the cases were well kept (not smudgy or fogged up like some places). I'm a little skeptical of how fresh the cakes are, given that there were many and the customer flow seems low, but we'll give the them benefit of the doubt since nothing was dry or tasted old. - 3 mini cakes (vanilla w/ lemon, chocolate w/ chocolate, chocolate w/ cofeee): Very cutely decorated and nicely flavored with fluffy mousse! Typically mini cakes/cupcakes I've bought are dry or disgustingly sweet from frosting/icing, but not these. People who like strong flavoring and heavy sweetness may find these bland, however they were good for my French-palate-inclined family. The lemon was the best of the bunch, while the chocolate and mocha were just ok. That being said, I have very high standards on chocolate cake and dislike most of the ones I come across - so my liking these is a bonus. I would've liked the flavors to be slightly stronger, but the lightness was still good and for the price (~$1.50/each) they were solid. - Pear tart: Loved the chunks of pear, apart from their scarcity - only three for a large amount of dough. Sadly the pastry was undercooked and the inner layers lacked crispness, while the custard was dense and tasteless. However, for the relatively cheap price (~$3.50) it wasn't so bad. - Sugar kronut: My first foray into the realm of croissant-doughnut hybrids! It did taste like a mix of croissant and doughnut, but I would've preferred it to be more on the fluffy, croissant side. The dough was a bit too chewy. - Chocolate mousse roll cake: Average. Not bad, not spectacular. I would get the other mini cakes over this one. - Mini eclair: The worst of the bunch. I really haven't been able to find a place that can beat my mom's homemade French choux a la creme. It looked cute, though. Overall, a great array of sweets at a pretty low price! This bakery is hands down the BEST I have had so far in my life... (mind you, I haven't tried Bouchon yet). The techniques and finish employed in each and every pastry are by far superior to any other American bakery. I had this white/dark chocolate cheesecake with orange peel and orange flavored gelee with berries, filled with a wonderfully moist dark chocolate and chocolate mouse. It was delicious... ingenious. Other cakes might be a little on the sweet side like the pistachio or the chocolate/apricot petit gateau. The tiramisu, however, was perfect... not too sweet, not too overpowering. Their macaroons are perfect... just perfect... no air pockets, moist, and with a lot of flavor. My personal recommendation is the sweet almond croissant filled with what I think might be frangipane. I am, however, saddened to say that apparently the ownership changed sometime in the past from this great French lady who owned the shop for 12 years to a Persian investor (though it seems that they've kept some of the original baker/pastry chefs... or they lied to me and only kept the recipes). The management and service staff were a bit rude and incredibly shady about discussing anything related to the new management and other minor things...I am sure the young lady in the counter lied to me about being "new" (3 weeks, she claimed), but I explicitly remember seeing her 4 months ago because she is the same girl who always says "I don't like sweets". I don't mean to hurt this business by all means because I am only all about the food and I just have great things to say about what they sell, but I wish they were a little more kind to customers and a bit more transparent. How else can I know I can trust the new management if they don't want to freely discuss that kind of stuff? Oh... it would also help if they make an effort to build some customer relations. I've been going to Paris Pastry regularly for nearly 15 years. It used to be the best bakery in town, but unfortunately in the past year or so, the quality has declined dramatically. Apparently, the long-time bakers have left or been let go, and the replacements don't seem to know much about baking. Butter has been replaced with cooking oil and the pastries and cakes are frequently old, while prices keep going up. I've even gotten items that were moldy inside. I've heard the previous owner retired and left the store to his daughter, but there never seems to be any owner or manager around anymore. This truly used to be a great bakery, but now it hardly seems better than Ralphs, not to mention the Bristol Farms across the street. If you want a great bakery, go to Almandine. read more

The girls whose parents own this French family bakery went to school with me and would always bring treats to school with them so I've been sampling their wonderful food since way back when. I ordered my wedding cake from them and naturally it was amazing; beautiful and delicious. I just stopped in the othe day to get a little something as a gift for my ailing Mom and discovered they carry those flavored macaroons I love so much. I only ever see these in New York. So, I was completely shocked and saddened to find out that the bakery has changed owners within the last year. I've tried a wide range of desserts from here: grand marnier cake, some raspberry-based cake, macarons, a variety of pastries, and slices of both their chocolate log roll cake and their mocha log roll cake (I don't know what it was actually called, but it was Christmas themed and had a toy sleigh on it). I thought everything was pretty average, although the raspberry based cake was delicious average. I loooooovvvveeeeee Paris Bakery. Specifically for their macaroons. I am a macaroon fanatic and over the past few years my love for macaroons has led me to be extremely picky about the ones I eat because now I can easily taste the difference between a mediocre one and a delicious one. That being said, Paris Bakery is my favorite place to buy macaroons; not only are they delicious but they have about 7-10 different flavors. I usually go and get about 5, all different flavors. Mango, strawberry and caramel are among my favorites but they are all amazing. Paris Baker also has a huge selection of other sweets, I just stick to the macaroons. If you have a sweet tooth and live in the area, even if you don't live in the area, Paris Bakery is definitely worth visiting. I'm sure you'll be back for more! read more

Despite my previous experience, I decided to give Paris another try because 1) one of my girlfriends absolutely swears by their cakes -their lab would always get them for all gatherings, and I had never tried their cakes; 2) all my go-to bakeries were either out of whole cakes/required pre-order/didn't have a cake large enough/was closed on Sunday; and 3) I was in a pinch because I was too sick to make my own. Basically, I was left without options, and figured this was a good opportunity as any for Paris to redeem itself. I went in the morning, so then the cakes would all be fresh and the Sun hadn't heated up the goods yet. They had their wide selection of cakes in various sizes available, and I will admit that they looked gorgeous. I asked for a recommendation, and the lady behind the counter suggested the tiramisu cake. So I got that, and asked for them to write 'happy birthday' on it and they did on a thing of white chocolate with dark chocolate writing. A plus for that. I couldn't make it to the birthday event cuz I was way too sick and didn't want to spread my germs, but my bf was sweet enough to bring back a slice of the cake afterwards. At $40, it was about the same price as most of the cakes at my favorite bakeries, so I expected the same quality of cake. I ask him how it was and he said it was good, so I got a fork and took a large bite. Dry. Oh so dry. If there was a dribbling of espresso in this cake, it didn't make it to this slice. The icing was a little too butter-greasy for my taste as well. It needed a good soak in espresso and a lot more moisture overall in the entire cake. I don't know what is worse, the oversaturated coffee-liquor intoxicating experience I had with Elysee's tiramisu cake, or this DRY, flavorless tiramisu at Paris? Needless to say, I don't think I'm going to take my chances with ANY tiramisu cake from any bakery from now on, unless it's a bakery that has proven itself to me like Amandine. I'm terribly sorry to my friend who I got this cake for. =( He deserved much better than this. read more
