Bristol Farms across the street is charging more than double that for a bran muffin in cellophane. The cream cheese filling was tangy and sweet, and felt like it had just been piped in. Really a great pastry. Friendly, available service, too. Things have changed in nine years -- and for the better. I'm reserving a fifth star because of how just ghastly their coffee was last time. It bums me out to see a negative review when I went here for the first time a few days ago and went back the next day. My experience was that the Grand Marnier and Raspberry cake were delicious and moist. The next day I got five more items to share with friends at dinner. We all liked every one of them but couldn't finish them all so we put them in the frig to eat today at lunch. Obviously if you take the desserts home and don't eat them right away, they're not going to be as fresh after being in the frig so maybe that's what happened with a few others. Going to be very honest.. Definitely not the best pastries I've had here in LA. Got the pain au chocolat and a cream cheese danish pastry (not sure the exact name). Granted I did come later in the day so I took this into account when tasting them. I wanted very much to give them the benefit of the doubt. The pain au chocolat was particularly disappointing. I think it is even inferior to what you might find at a good quality local grocery store. It was very dry and stale (again it was later in the day, but it was borderline too stale), with no appreciable butteriness and flakiness. I even tried warming them up in a toaster on low heat. I noticed it did have a lot more chocolate than your typical pain au chocolat, which was something I wasn't used to. Please see photo. The cream cheese danish was far better (but still not memorable) - the pastry base was more tender, flaky and the cream cheese-based filling was not too sweet which was nice. The pastries, in general, are huge, especially for the price. And they close a little later than most places! But I would much rather continue exploring all the other patisseries and boulangeries here in this city. There are many other contenders for a quality croissant - Lou the French on the Block, Delvigne, La Tropezienne, Chaumont, Sweet Lily Bakery, Proof Bakery, and many others I'm not mentioning. The two stars are solely for two pastries I tried. I realize they offer a lot of other things so I don't want to speak for them all. Paris Bakery has been around in Westwood for as long as I can remember. I don't know if it is the same family who it owns it or they have changed hands but there is something to be said for an establishment that has been around for so long. I walk past this place very often but have not been in there personally in years but their pastry would always pop up in pot lucks and in my office birthday cake celebration. Hence you see the photo of the giant chocolate cake which is quite impressive and well appreciated by the office staff. Paris Bakery is certainly very much praised and loved by my friends. Being a picky eater I am giving them 3 stars. The 5 stars are for Tartine and Mr. Holmes Bake shop in San Francisco and Porto's in Los Angeles. We also get cake from Ralph's and that is a 1 star and then Costco birthday cake is just a little better than Ralph's. Costco Cheese cake is however pretty good and in the 3.5 Star range. There is probably a 5 Star cake at Paris but I can't be trying to find that holy grail without getting fat and diabetic. read more

There's a small parking lot in the back which doesn't lead to the store directly, I peaked originally from the back trying to see if there's an hidden entrance but all I found is a dingy room. You'll have to walk around to the front. Stopped by finally! The place was empty except for one customer, but I still had time to browse. Nicely decorated interior with a great selection of cakes and pastries. I ordered the Grand Marnier mini cake and a variety of Macarons. The cake was rich and not too sweet, a mix of chocolate coating, soft cake, and flavored cream. The Macarons were very flavorful but some of them seemed old and chewy. The Chocolate was the most disappointing in that respect. The Earl Grey one had an amazing bergamot taste and a beautiful deep green color to it. The Vanilla was by far the freshest and most flavorful - I wish I'd just ordered all Vanilla! The employee working was friendly, and since it was so quiet I stayed and read while enjoying my purchases. I don't always work in the Westwood area but come down the same road when I do which is about 4-5 times a month. I never noticed this place until last week when I arrived to work a bit early and wanted to find a new place for a morning coffee and snack instead of Starbucks or Coffee Bean. Of course this part of town is dead at 7AM but I was surprised to not see anyone in here to at least pick up pastries and what not for their offices. The bakery smelled so nice upon walking in and all the displays were full of pastries, cakes, cookies, and more. I started taking a look when a young girl came from the back to help me and she was very friendly and helpful in answering questions I had about what pastry was filled with what. I ended up ordering a chocolate croissant and a blueberry pastry which was a shocker for me because so many places that make something like a blueberry pastry just don't make it right. I also received a free small coffee with the Yelp check-in. Let me tell you this is some strong and bitter coffee! I added some milk and sugar to make it taste right for my tastebuds. Both pastries were delicious! And both came to under $6. The blueberry pastry was made great, nice blueberry taste and not too much of a "jam" you tend to find in many fruit pastries. The chocolate was also nice and tasted better than most chocolate pastries. Both had a soft, fluffy interior and thin crispy exterior and the dough itself tasted great. So I figured OK I'll give them a chance, I called them and I ordered a red velvet birthday cake for my 18 year old twins birthday. When I arrive two days later to pick it up I let's just say I was underwhelmed. I didn't say anything but the lady behind the counter saw the look I gave her. I handed her my money and she said twice what a good deal I'm getting on the cake. because of the coupon I used off the flyer. This clearly is a mass produced super market cake. This used to be my absolute favorite place to get cake for my and others' birthdays. I went in today and my issue is with the customer service at this time. The girl serving today was completely untrained, and while I understand that one may immediately think it is not her fault, I found that there were lots of things in her control that if she had taken care to attend to would have made her more knowledgeable. She had no clue what any cake was except for the name of it if it even had a label, as I want to say that about 70% of their cakes were not even labeled. Excuses were "I was in the front doing this or that when they decorated this cake in the back, so I have no clue what is inside," or "I am new," or "that one is not labeled so it is hard to say," or "that one came to us like that, it was not made here, so I do not know what that is," or "we put ours in the freezer, but do you want to freeze lightly or very hard, I guess that would be okay." Here are some tips: if someone is decorating a cake in the back, have them tell you what it is since you know you will be working a shift alone and may be asked about what kind of cake it is. If there are no labels on cakes that were not made onsite, call the factory/bakery and ask what was sent so you can tell your customers. So here is the final outcome: I purchased the strawberry roulade, which she pronounced 'roulette', which as far as what it is, is pretty self explanatory, and while for the first time ever did the cream taste a bit old, at least it did not throughout the entire piece I had and only within a few bites. The raspberry chocolate cake is what 'topped the cake' for my experience here today, hence the one star, and that is that she was insistent that the chocolate cake was a raspberry chocolate cake and even specifically told me to get it only if I really love raspberries. I LOVE raspberries - I used to eat them like candy as a kid and teenager when I would visit Europe every year. I am not too fond of chocolate cake myself, but was willing to purchase it since she insisted that this cake had raspberries in it and not just the gelatin on top. Come home and time to celebrate, the chocolate cake is a basic chocolate cake, no different from any other cake at a lower tier bakery, NOT A SINGLE NOTE OF RASPBERRIES, let alone any raspberries inside of the cake. It is a chocolate cake with red jello on top, and you cannot even taste the jello so I have no clue what it was, in fact, supposed to taste like. MAJOR disappointment. This place used to be awesome and today was an epic fail. I also had to box my own cakes because the girl was fumbling with locking up the box to the point that I took it from her and closed it myself in a split second. Maybe care a bit more about your business and stop trying to make money off of what you USED to be - your customers can tell the difference. I guess I will find someone who likes basic chocolate cake you can buy at the frozen food section to give this one away to, and the strawberry 'roulette' will be what will keep me somewhat festive on my birthday. read more
