I stopped in at Paris Bakery because the exterior looked cute and it was 730A and needed a coffee/ pastry fix before my mediation. Behind the glass casing, their pastries and treats looked really good. But I didn't want to eat too much before work, and didn't want to store food in the company auto. I asked the lady at the counter if the pastries were fresh from the morning and she replied yes, though now in hindsight, I don't think they were. I had a cappuccino, a cronut and a sausage croissant type of pastry. I asked the lady to warm it and it took her five minutes to do so. It wasn't even warm when I got it. Mind you, I was the only person in the shop at the time. I believe the rest of LA was still asleep. The cappuccino was weak, cronut stale and sausage croissant was disenchanting to eat. I've never tried the macarons, but this is my go-to place for cakes. They open very early in the morning so that I can go before work, and in my experience, the staff is always SUPER friendly and willing to give suggestions. The cakes are beautifully, profesionally decorated, and people always ask me where they're from. I always get lots of compliments for the Chocolate Grand Marnier and the Princess Cake (but beware, the former has a thick chocolate coating all around, so trying to slice it results in your cake looking like you blew it up. Make sure to have a good knife). The $25 smaller cake is usually perfect for office and small group gatherings. That's been my only experience with Paris Pastry, and I've always been happy with them. When I first gazed in their display cases, I thought I was transported to Bottega Louie's......or that Bottega Louie secretly orders from them. That's not the case, but I thought it for a brief second. Everything was colorful, stunning, and downright beautiful looking. So, of course, I wanted some photos of these mouthwatering delectables. Unfortunately, this was another place with the strange "no photo" policy, but I learned that AFTER I took about 6 photos. :) If they'd just realize I'm taking them for THEIR benefit, I mean, SERIOUSLY, what is the problem? I want to capture it on film.....a thing of beauty is a joy forever.... especially if I can preserve it on film." Sadly, she just stared at me. It didn't phase her in the least.. STILL """shaking head, rolling eyes""" Anyway, I ended up buying 4 very small mousse cups (like 2 spoonfuls per cup.....one for me, one for hubby), and each had a little piece of sponge cake with mousse on top, and encased in chocolate with fancy gold designs swirled on each, plus little candies and edible decor on top of each. I bought blueberry, mango, apple caramel, and chocolate/mocha. Blueberry and mango were most true to their flavors and the most interesting, but the apple caramel tasted nothing like it should have, and the chocolate/mocha was decent, but not great. They had many more flavors to choose from.......lemon, grand marnier, tiramisu, raspberry, strawberry, and honestly, I can't remember them all. Many, many to choose from.... one more gorgeous than the next. (see my pictures that I DID get !) They had cookies, croissants, for which I purchased the chocolate croissant. The croissant was a waste. There was a sprinkling of some chocolate chips in the middle, but no chocolate filling per se, which angered me, and the croissant itself was not buttery or flaky. That was a negative for me. They had cakes and tarts, napoleans and eclairs which I purchased none of. They only sold the cakes whole, and I'm not a fan of napoleans or eclairs. All were pretty, though. They also had macarons. It's a French pastry shop. Of course, they'll have macarons. They were good, yes, but can they compete with 'Lette, Bottega Louie or Jin Patisserie.......NO !! Some were not as soft as others, and frankly, some of the flavors weren't strong enough for me to know what they were, and even though she told me all the flavors, the colors were all similar enough for me to not know the difference....or remember what she said in the first place. The pistachio was recognizable both in terms of color and taste, and probably their most flavorful. Their most unique was tangerine, which had little black sesame seeds on top, and that's how I remembered that one....but it tasted like tangerine, too, which I love. It also had either vanilla or almond in it, too...or maybe both. I enjoyed it. Because this shop's pastry collection reminded me of Bottega Louie's collection in appearance, it really was nothing like it at all. Bottega had so many different kinds of flavors, textures, items, This place had a lot of things, but textures were similar, if not the exact same, just the flavor and designs changed. Also, Bottega's flavors were fabulous. Here, some things were mediocre. Honestly, in final assessment, the presentation was exquisite....5 stars, but for taste, considering how gorgeous they LOOKED, they should have all been exquisite in taste, too, so they only get 3 stars. I used to like this place but the quality is declining rapidly. -The two girls behind the counter are more interested in their own chit-chat than in helping you... That wasn't the case before. Today the place was empty, 3 people were in line, yet the baristas(?) continued to casually chat while one was drinking her beverage. It comes off as a place where the owner is absent and the staff simply doesn't care. -They have slowed down and I don't think they bake new cakes daily. I used to find a counter full of fresh goodies, now if I go in the afternoon, many things are sold out. -They used to have a restroom, but I just found out today that it's no longer for customers. So if you'd like to wash your hands after driving here or touching their door knob or the semi-clean tables... Tough luck. I guess it's not for sitting in anymore, so ignore the dozen tables set up. We ordered a cake here for my friend's birthday, called a "Princess Cake," white cake middle with raspberry mousse and fresh raspberries (soaked in some sort of liquor I think). The outside was decorated with a beautiful fondant layer, flowers, and the side of the cake had two pretty ribbons around it. What I'm trying to get at is that the cake actually tasted better than it looked, and it already looked fantastic. Seriously it was SO delicious and amazing, we loved it! Drove to this area to check this place and i would say dont do it. We came in the morning and we saw nothing but stale, old looking pastries. It gave me a stomache just by looking at it. Very limited selection of pastries, and nothing like in the pictures! You are better off going to your nearest bakery. You have a better chance getting fresher items for half the price as well. I received one of their desserts as a gift from a friend so I didn't get to actually visit the place. Just based on taste, I would rate this place 3.5 stars. I got to taste their mango cake roulade. I wish I took a picture because the presentation was sleek and clean with distinct cream and sponge cake layers. The mango flavor was sweet and delicate while the cream was nice and fluffy. It wasn't subpar but it wasn't spectacular, however. It definitely could benefit from some fresh pieces of fruit and without the gummy (yet pretty) sheen it was encased in. If they close at 4:00, then 3:15 allows 45 minutes to prepare a coffee (to go, of course). I used to love this place -- I've been going there since they were in Brentwood. They should hire some people who are there to work and make the customers happy, instead of lazy people like Elizabeth who said she doesn't have time to make coffee. read more

I stopped in at the Paris Bakery the other day after lunch around 12:30pm. My grandma has been a big fan of the bakery for years and suggested that my girlfriend and I stop in and pick up some treats for the rest of my family. Both the outside of the restaurant and the interior are both very cute and French themed. The interior is quite large with a nice seating area and the selection is very extensive. They have variety of different types of pastries, desserts, donuts, and breads, although there was a lot of products were sold out. Many of the display cases were unfortunately fogged up, so it was a little bit difficult to see certain items. I ended up ordering four macarons, a custard filled "kronut", an apple tart and a chocolate raspberry dessert. While I do not think they compare to lette, the macarons at Paris Bakery were solid and the flavors were good. The apple pastry was alright, but seemed a little bit old; the apples were tasty, but the bread seemed a little bit chewy. I cannot comment on the chocolate raspberry dessert (besides that it was pretty) since I didn't have any of it, but I thoroughly enjoyed the kronut. The kronut was flaky and the custard inside was light and creamy. On the outside, it wasn't very appealing though and looked a little bit overcooked. I was skeptical when ordering it, but my girlfriend wanted to try it. Prices were fair ($15 total) , but the service was pretty mediocre. No one was especially friendly and despite having three people behind the counter, we had to initiate in order to get help. In addition, the seating area has a door that is very clearly a bathroom (and in the Yelp comments people say that they used to have one). My girlfriend really needed to use the restroom and asked if she could use it, but the employees told her that there was no bathroom and that she would have to go elsewhere. It is one thing if you don't have a restroom, but it is another thing if you have one that isn't for customers and lie about not having one at all. read more

When I first walked in, I was thinking, "Why did this place get a 3.5 stars on Yelp?? It's so cute in here and everything looks so beautiful and delectable!" Then, after buying my box of goodies and returning to my apartment to begin my indulgence, I realized why... Some of their pastries seem old, not fresh, and therefore, inconsistent. I honestly did want to buy one of everything! They have such great variety here, but when I return, I will be weary about certain selections, that's for sure. (Start off with the good, then the bleh, then the tasty.) Blueberry mousse cake ($1.50): so pretty, little, eye-openingly desirable! This little treat had a milk chocolate outer ring for a shell. Within it lay four layers of first, from bottom up, moist yellow cake, lavender-colored blueberry mousse, cake, mousse. I like this and I will get it again, or at least try the other flavors of the same family. (The pistachio one isn't good though.) Napoleon ($3.95): the worse part is... the nice lady working there recommended this to me as a favorite. I don't want to dwell on the bad, so I'll make this short... The top was hard and cracked. The phyllo dough layers practically needed a knife to cut through. And the whole thing was overly sweet, even for my sweet tooth. The custard-like center was real sticky; I wouldn't call it a custard. Parts of this dessert was frozen; so maybe it's old? I don't know... Earl grey macaron ($1.95): ooooh so yummy. Two perfect chewy almond cookies with a sweet ganache in the middle! The taste of earl grey was faint, but I could taste the hints of mocha/chocolate. There were probably another 8-10 flavors of macarons that also sounded very tempting, and you know what? Great French patisserie in a place you might not expect one. I've had a couple things to eat here, which I've loved. There are many things here I merely gawk at, and hope to someday indulge in. It's like foodporn, IRL. The croissants (almond, chocolate, plain) are perfect. The small chocolate chocolate cookies are also delicious, and two are just right if you're trying to be good. There are breads and cakes and they of course do special orders. Even, yes, cronuts. Though on of the surface, Paris doesn't seem all that French (the staff doesn't seem French), yet the treats are all screaming, 'Oui!' They are screaming other things, too, like 'Get In My Belly'. The staff, by the way, is pleasant, patient and helpful. I've come here a couple times to simply enjoy a cup of coffee (don't forget to 'check-in'). This bakery has become my mother and I's favorite and that's saying something! We've become regulars. They have a very wide variety of pastries. While we have not yet tried their cakes (though I hear they're great), their other items have not let us down. The croissants are our favorites, they're pretty large. Prices are also great! Paris Pastry is an adorable place. I'm a huge baked goods nerd so stepping into this place is always a mini-party for me. I like the laid back atmosphere of this place (none of that hipster vibe or the "we're so rich wepay $5.00 for a cup of coffee" thing here)...and of course, the food! The savory products are nice (I had a mushroom pie once and it was really really satisfying) but the real gems are the desserts (duh). The creme brulee is nothing short of awesome. They also have really good coffee. This is the perfect go-to chill out spot and also the perfect place to pick up a gift for someone. Nothing is more smile-inducing that a box of madeleines tied with a sky-blue ribbon! Beware though - they close pretty early!! -- EDIT: 05/25/2008 I went back a few days ago for their macaroons. I wouldn't say there were the BEST macaroons in the world but they are good enough (and after all, where else can you get macaroons in the Westwood area??) But WOW...are they expensive!! At $2.50 a pop, you'd think they were made of gold or something. Especially considering that each macaroon is the size of a nickel. And to think that I used to feel the Le Gouter Bernardaud macaroons to be pricey (for those who plan to visit HK soon, they are HK$15/US$1.80 each...or HK$18/US$2.25 each for dine in) and they are, quite literally TWICE the size of the Paris Pastry macaroons. My husband and I took our breakfast there before an escape room. Best decision ever. The cakes are really beautiful, croissants and others pastries looked really good. But, I am from France, so I can be picky about these sort of things. We ordered a small apple pie and an apricot danish with a hot chocolate and a moca latte. The drinks were good but the pastries were really delicious. There was some free sample of brioche with apple in it, that was heaven for me, really tasty. Such a local gem! My office is close and every co-worker always requests birthday dessert from the Paris Bakery! I've had several different desserts and pastries here and they never disappoint! From the perfect crust on the fruit tarts to the decadent chocolate cakes and the flaky croissants, you can't really go wrong here.
