We checked in at Neptune and were told it would be three hours by two groups ahead of us who had just been called to receive their table. I couldn't believe it but after waiting behind them for over five minutes to try to verify the wait time, we said forget it. The hostess seemed to have nothing going but avoided looking over. It was a weird vibe. Kind of like on Seinfeld, a badge of honor to be abused. They seem to take pride in having waited three hours to still not receive a table. Anyway we walked next door to Pauli's and immediately bought a bowl of chowder and a hot crunchy lobster roll. The lobster tasted fresh and buttery, not all mayonnaisey like so many places and there was a large amount of lobster in large chunks. The chowder was seasoned correctly, not over seasoned. A fair amount of clams to potatoes. A good solid meal for a good price. I can't imagine what the other guy offers that could be worth the abuse. read more

But the owner was there and he said he could make it hot (tossed in butter) bc 5 ppl requested for that this week. So I ordered the hot one. I tried lobster rolls from 4 places: neptune, live & kickin, atlantic fish and pauli's. Neptune still has the 1st place in my heart but pauli's definitely the second, with the price you pay and the lonster you get, it's definitely worth it. I just dont like a hot bun with cold lobster smothered in mayo. It just doesnt taste right. If neptune's wait is too long, come to pauli's! My work had ordered Pauli's a few times and we all really enjoyed it! Great selection for an office as they have a range of salads and sandwiches that can easily be modified. My boyfriend and I were heading to Boston Harbor Cruises on a Saturday and ordered online to pick up a couple of sandwiches on our way to the boat. We arrived right at the time we specified online and the sandwiches were ready. Having the online system was great as our credit card was already processed so all we need to do was walk in and pick up the sandwiches! I had the mozzarella and tomato sandwich and it was superb. The bread was the ingredient that really did it. It was slightly salty that just made it completely perfect. My boyfriend had an Italian sub and he enjoyed just as much! I don't think the food here is necessarily 'fresh'... For the most part anything that is frozen is not fresh (i.e. ravioli). Besides that, I tried the Chicken, Ziti and Broccoli dish. It was probably one of the worst pasta sauces I've ever had; some sort of oil, garlic, onion and parmesan mixture to form a surprisingly bland sauce. Not sure why people think this place is pricey for a lobster roll -- I've seen higher. At least this one is well worth the splurge!! I think my daughter enjoyed her traditional cold roll, because it was all gone. I didn't hear any comments she may have made, because I had died and gone to heaven after my first bite of the roll with the lobster tossed in warm butter. So much flavor to savor!! My friend and I were in town for figure skating worlds and read a review on Pauli's. It is a sandwich shop with so many choices it can be hard to choose. We both had the lobster roll and it was delicious - big pieces of lobster claw and knuckles. There is no filler with this lobster. We had also stopped another day and had breakfast (eggs, a bagel, bacon and potatoes for me and pancakes for my friend). It too was very good. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The restaurant is very tiny and has very little seating. They appear to do a big carry out business. I would definitely recommend this place to my friends. read more

I love this place! Just when I thought that I had exhausted all decent lunch options in the North End, Pauli's moved in around the corner from my office. My co-worker and I refuse to go anywhere else now. My favorite is the Italian-- perfect balance of meat and fresh vegetables. The California wrap is very unique and absolutely delicious for such a healthy option. I just tried the Proscuitto Classico and it's just as great as everything else that I've tried.
